Waiter Spills Beer Down German Chancellor Angela Merkels Back

Hoping to blow off some steam at the Christian Democratic Union’s Ash Wednesday meeting in Demmin, which apparently features drinking, German Chancellor Angela Merkel could not get a break as a waiter dropped a tray of beers down the back of the woman who is often labeled as the most powerful in the world.

To the waiter’s credit, he was holding at least six fairly large cold ones. Merkel understandably jolted when the beers first crashed down her back, but did not let the accident get to her, smiling for cameras soon after the spill:

Yahoo! reports that the waiter, only known as Martin, told Bild newspaper: “A colleague should have brought her the beer. But she was so nervous, she asked me to do it for her.”

“I was shoved from behind, and tried to catch the beers, but it was too late,” he said.

The Daily Mail reports that the waiter is 21, and was shouting a swear word as the glasses slipped off his tray towards the country’s leader. While Merkel may have regained her cool, aides standing behind her threw their arms into the air, with one holding her head in their hands.

To be a world leader, I guess you must learn to not cry over spilled Pilsener:

    When the waiter “delivered” her beer.
    The serving tray slipped
    And and its contents were dripped
    Down her back soaking clear to her rear.

    Expecting to be drawn and quartered
    For spilling five glasses of portered,
    The waiter’s heart sped
    Until Angela said,
    “This isn’t the drink that I ordered.”

      I was thinking the same thing. It’s possible those glasses were made here in the U.S. and we are partially responsible for the spill!! I wonder if they woke the POTUS in the middle of the night to inform him of this serious international incident…………..

      You evidently didn’t see the man passing behind him brush the tray with his back.
      I’ve worked restaurants most of my adult life, and this is as blameless as it gets.

    I am certain that the miserable failed entity called the EU is now complaining about the waste of good beer.
    The waiters significant other has probably been unemployed for more than 5 years and spilled the beer in protest?.

    Come on, People, isn’t it obvious! The guy in the black suit is George W. Bush. Has to be him, he‘s responsible for everything else that’s wrong with this world. Just ask Obummer. I even heard he was responsible for breaking off the iceberg that sank the Titanic. Well, that’s what I heard. But I’m not one to go around spreading rumors. I know when to keep my mouth shut.     The man brushing past the waiter definitely tipped the tray with his elbow. It’s only a matter of about 5 or 10°, but it was enough to start the slide. The waiter was obviously inexperienced, he should have held the tray further from the Chancellor, and held it straighter, but the glasses didn’t start their slide until the man brushed past with his elbow.

      I disagree — the glasses were falling before the man walked by. The tray makes a sudden tip up once the falling glasses finish landing on it, about when the man is walking by. The waiter did it all on his own, no bumps, no one else to blame.

      They slow it down, so you can easily see the bump. The edge of the tray rises to the top of the man’s elbow. But it’s also shown by the reaction of the two people behind the waiter. The man whose elbow bumps the tray immediately looks back, after he bumps the tray, but also the woman in the blue dress reacts immediately and turns accusingly – not at the waiter, but at the man whose elbow bumped the tray.

      I agree with thirtyeightwinks here…very obvious to the trained eye yet several posts stating it was the guy walking by…glad you all are not military analysts watching pred feeds…you will all have downtown paris bombed instead of the extremists….wait…perhaps you should be an analyst for a day anyway…

    I watched it several times and not once did I see that the waiter was pushed. The guy in the suit comes close, but I never see him hitting the tray. It looked to me like the waiter momentarily lost control of the tray.

    I don’t think it was a push from behind but more like an inexperienced waiter not paying attention to his tray………LOL!!!!!

    At least she was a good sport about the incident……..LOL!!!!!!

    The “original” waiter story… could just be misdirection ..?
    And they needed “two masters” for the “well-choreographed-shtick”….

    It was just a funny mishap done to the “Queen” of Germany.

      Yeah, I was stationed there three times. It happens at those big fests on occasion. Since it was room temperature anyway, it was not like being doused with ice water. Beside, the bier tent is the best ride at these fests anyway.

    I guess that waiter won’t be waiting on any more tables in the future! I‘m surprised that Merkel didn’t have more of a reaction. She didn’t even turn around to see what happened!

    She must have been thinking about all those tax collectors that she is sending to Troika-governed Greece! Hey, what’s a little beer down your back compared to that!
