Done Deal: Russian Prez Signs START Treaty

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed the ratification of a nuclear arms cut pact with the United States.

The treaty, known as New START, is a centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s efforts to “reset” ties with Moscow.

The treaty limits each country to 1,550 strategic warheads, down from the current ceiling of 2,200, and also re-establishes a system for monitoring that ended in December 2009 with the expiration of a previous arms deal.

In a statement to his security council on Friday, Medvedev said the pact will take effect when the ratification documents are exchanged by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The problem with the New START Treaty is that it assumes that both sides will keep their end of the deal.

Can anyone tell me anything about Russia’s history, even recent history since the collapse of the USSR regime, that suggests that Russia will really keep their end of the bargain?

They only need to dismantle their old and antiquated warheads to look like they’ve kept their end of the bargain. But what about those warheads in Russia we do not know about?

After all, these things as a matter of national security on both sides have always been kept TOP SECRET. For that reason, the data that has been divulged is by nature suspect as to how accurate it actually is, on both sides.

It has been determined by our Nuclear Defense Department that only 303 American nukes are needed to destroy our planet as we know it. Everything else is simply overkill and puts us at risk for a terrorist group to acquire one of them. Many posters on this board seem ignorant of that fact.

you seem ignorant of the fact that both the United States and Russia and China I would venture of anti missle systems that while not perfect can remove 25-50% of incoming missles. The US patriot missle system actually had a near 75% rate of destroying incoming SCUD missles during the first Gulf War.
also, all three nations had short, medium, and long range nuclear missles as well as land based and water/sub based systems. speculation still says that the Russians have a space based platform still to this day. there are also “battle-field” nuclear weapons that are to be used in close combat ground wars that have yields on the order of the original atomic bomb and only cover a blast area of 10 miles.

you don’t just state that we only need 303 to destroy the planet and think that number is the be all end all of conditions. the military and the US most plan for all types of attacks and counter-attacks in all theatres so that we are best protected and prepared. those 303 would be of our highest yield ICBM types that are made for Global War not localized war or regional war.

given your blanket ignorant of the facts statement….i still think that 1550 is too many. maybe 1000 would be better and still able to cover the short, medium, long range options and the ground and sub based options….the problem with this treaty was that while the US is sitting on our aging missle fleet, the Russians are now free to destroy thousands of old 1960′s era missles while they upgrade with higher yield, newer technology devices. so they will look good to the world by saying, “we destroyed 1500 missles but the US only destroyed 650.” but not tell the world that they built nearly 1000 brand new missles that are each more powerful than 10 of the old missles they destroyed and more accurate and more able to evade the anti-missle systems we stopped building in the 1990′s

Reagan was for an end to nuclear weapons. This is just a step. A step supported by all previous SOS and pretty much every thinking individual who is in a position to know the issue. As previously mentioned, Russia is a broke kleptocracy that has local problems keeping them busy. They , like Europe and the US have Islamist problems which don’t lend themselves to nuclear weapons.

So he signs a treaty that means nothing. They decomission ancient elderly unusable nukes on their side, we get rid of middle aged ones. Everyone blathers like they did something when they really didn’t. Obama trying to score points looking presidential (because God knows he doesn’t look it much in any other way) and the Russians get to strut, pretending that they’re still important. Meanwhile Obama looks in the mirror congratulating himself on looking good while the Russian president makes a private phone deal with Iran to trade more technology for cash.

Meanwhile, Iran is ramping up and our deterrant is much less fearsome to them, so they operate and trade information and parts with other nasty colleagues. They get stronger, we purposefully weaken ourselves. The far left sings Kumbayah and conservatives shake their head at the naivete and stupidity.

Is this the point where I’m supposed to clap? *snort*

“pretty sure the US cant nuke al-qaeda”
That’s a good idea. Say we gather enough of a coalition together to surround the area of the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, pepper the area with pamphlets stating anyone who wishes not to die come down orderly and give up their weapons, as for the rest, you take the nuclear bombs slated for destruction and instead carpet bomb the mountains and then just leave, mission accomplished. Now the rage will well up in the rest of the terrorist cells around the world and they will move to suicide bomb any target they can find (most will have the same targets in mind and will do overkill of one area, in other words wasting their efforts). This is where the ones with cell phone triggers you employ a spam message every few seconds to blow the bombs prematurally. Great idea right?

Two probable reasons they are expanding the number of shelters are the sheer accuracy our current nukes are able to achieve with GPS, and the sheer number of hardened targets for C3I we would need to strike at for a total decimation of their leadership in the event of war, the more dispersed the targets are by distance and numbers, the more we need to hit.

New York Republican Peter King has introduced a bill that would protect the army of citizen spies Homeland Security hopes to recruit under Janet Napolitano’s “See Something, Say Something” snoop campaign from lawsuits brought by innocent people wrongly accused of being terrorists or extremists.

“A top US lawmaker unveiled legislation on Wednesday to protect individuals who tip off authorities to potential extremist threats from lawsuits, in the event that they turn out to finger innocents,” reports AFP.

House Homeland Security Chairman King, who is pushing the “See Something, Say Something Act,” wants to shield “good citizens who report suspicious activity” from facing the consequences of misidentifying innocent behavior as extremism or terror.

Of course, this will only encourage untrained people to report any behavior whatsoever, no matter how benign, as potential terrorism, creating an army of enthusiastic but hapless citizen spies.

“King said his bill would extend protections from individuals “who report suspicious activity anywhere,” adds the report, making reference to the DHS’ “See Something, Say Something” campaign, which characterizes paying for things with cash as a suspicious activity.

The program was launched with the aid of Orwellian telescreens at Wal-Mart checkouts that play a message from Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano encouraging Americans to report anything unusual to Wal-Mart managers. The program was subsequently expanded to include 9,000 federal buildings, as well as sports stadiums, businesses and communities in general.

Dusty, maybe. But the treaty also has the support of George Bush and the entire military command. From the conservative WSJ:

The New START Treaty has the unanimous support of America’s military leadership—to include the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, all of the service chiefs, and the commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, the organization responsible for our strategic nuclear deterrent. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703339304575240164048611360.html). It’s also supported by several past Secretaries of State, military leaders and so on.
