DES MOINES, Iowa (The Blaze/AP) — Police arrested more than a dozen Occupy protesters Thursday in Iowa who are targeting Democrats and Republicans just days before the state’s closely watched lead-off presidential caucuses.
Five protesters were arrested outside the Iowa campaign headquarters of presidential contender Ron Paul in Ankeny before the group moved on to the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters in Des Moines, where 12 more were taken into custody. All were ticketed for trespassing and released.
The protests are part of an Occupy the Caucuses effort launched this week in Des Moines that has attracted activists from around the country. Many of them have promised to interrupt campaign activities, and organizers promised more confrontations on Friday with campaign offices of Republican presidential hopefuls.
Occupy the Caucuses spokeswoman Danielle Ryun, who was among those arrested at the state Democratic Party headquarters, said the goal is not to be arrested. But since campaign officials won’t listen to them, protesters are willing to be arrested to get their message across, she said.
“It would be great if we could show up, issue our concerns and have the candidates acknowledge us and change their platform,” she said.
Those arrested in Des Moines included a 14-year-old girl who was released to her father at the scene. On Thursday, seven protesters were arrested outside Republican Mitt Romney’s Des Moines headquarters.
Iowa Democratic Party Executive Director Norm Sterzenbach said the protesters were given the opportunity to express their opinions and party officials listened to their concerns, but he said occupying the party offices was unacceptable.
“Not only does it interfere with the important work that our volunteers and staff do to engage Iowans in the political process, by physically blocking our staff from entering or exiting the building sets a very dangerous precedent,” Sterzenbach said in a statement.

A Des Moines police officer triest to speak to a group of protesters outside Ron Paul's campaign headquarters Thursday. (AP)
Protesters at Paul’s campaign headquarters were protesting his proposal to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency if elected.
Ryun said the Paul campaign headquarters were locked when protesters arrived. By locking their doors, campaigns “are signaling to us that they have become disengaged,” Ryun said.
“We are fighting for future generations,” cross-legged protesters chanted outside. “In order to live, we need clean air….Don’t dismantle the EPA.”
A telephone message left for a Paul campaign spokesman was not returned.
At the Iowa Democratic Party’s offices, protesters targeted President Barack Obama, demanding that he put a stop to home foreclosures, turn down campaign donations from Wall Street, and end indefinite detentions of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
“They’re all going to get equal play on this,” Ryun said. “We are very disillusioned with every candidate.”
Eight protesters were arrested at the party’s offices on Dec. 19.
Police in Des Moines and Ankeny said the protesters were given the option of leaving and told if they refused they would be arrested. Police said the arrests were peaceful and no force was used.
The Occupy movement began in New York and has spread across the country. Activists generally protest the growing gap between rich and poor and corporate influence over government.

For people old enough to remember Nixon, there should be a slight suspicion that Nixon’s progressive tendencies could mirror those of Romney or even Newt. Newt reminds me of a college professor who delights in saying things that might shock a student for the purpose of making the student think, not to enlighten them.

1. Reduce the budget to 5 million per annum.
Report Post »2. Privatize the environmental impact studies (EIS), based on tenders. Cap the required study time to a maximum of 6 months. The base fee schedules strictly based on tenders. The request submitter has the pick of study provider.
3. Beside EIS, EPA would be able to submit only recommendations.
4. Create 3 ombudsman posts (with a term limit 4 years, one term, no more), from business, academic and general public spheres.
4. Whatever recommendation comes out of EPA has to go through ombudsmen and an unanimous agreement only can pass it along for further processing by legislation,

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 12:09amThere’s no part of it that is needed. Every state has an equivalent department responsible for not destroying the goose that lays the golden eggs (i.e. the “environment”). This means controlling factories that pollute rivers and businesses that dispose of toxic materials in imprudent fashion. We need that … but we already have that.
The present EPA’s purpose is to throttle industry. You can find the basis of this in the communist manifesto, if you bother to read it. In the present context, it’s all about bringing the USA down.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 9:04amThe average time for an EIS for highway work was 77 months a few years ago. There was suppose to be a streamlining process going on, but I did not hear of any breakthrough. If you read one, you have read them all. As long as you stay withing the same state or similar region, the look like they have been copied one from the other. Without more lane miles of roads, the congestion problems in urban areas will soon visit the rural areas. Traffic from Memphis to Bristol, Tennessee via I-40 and I-81 is expected to drop to an average of 52 miles per hour by 2030 according to plans submitted to the Federal Highway Administration by our last Democrat governor. To keep it that high, I suspect that they plan to alter the management of speed by variable speed limits. This is another European wonder fix to be imported to keep from building more lane miles of road. Road speed limits will be changed continuously by computer feedback based on the traffic volume and will slow down traffic before the Interstate becomes a parking lot. All of this is to save a few rare bats, some wildflowers, avoid acid runoff anxiety and to save the planet. Meanwhile the population is doubling every 66 years and the number of lane miles is doubling every 360 years. If they manage the Earth as well as they manage transportation, we are in big trouble.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 9:22amWhen the EPA proposes something that cost the public substantial sums of money, we need to have someone to reward or blame like a member of Congress, not a bureaucrat with a Leftist agenda and a CO2 anxiety disorder. Increasing the cost of business reduces competition when it knocks off even a small fraction of business that can not comply. Sometimes creating a “level playing field creates less price competition. Some businesses can survive government meddling while others can not. An active bureaucracy creates more and more lobbying.

YES! I DO feel like I‘m drowning in a waterfall and I’m BEYOND tired of that feeling!
So then I started ASKING everyone I’ve met since “Have you ever heard of the term ”wicked problem“ or ”social messes”???” So far today….NOT ONE of them has. So now I want to ask a much larger “sample” of people the same question-
Have you EVER heard of any of this?
I’m overjoyed to know that the “experts” not only came up with a way to define what we are ALL experiencing, but ALSO have come up with ways to fight it that make perfect sense! But I’m MAD AS HELL-that in 30+ years since they did it, that this concept AND it’s tools HAVE NOT BECOME COMMON KNOWLEDGE to “we the people”????
WHY…for the love of ALL that is holy, hasn’t this knowledge and understanding been TRANSMITTED to as many American citizens as possible? ESPECIALLY from those who are “social” movement people?????

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 10:47pmActually, this is taught in business classes and leadership books. The problem is in group dynamics there is always stress to get group buy-in. But in leadership classes, the emphasis is always put on decision making. What the point in that paper is the frustration in trying to get an overall group buy-in, which isn’t always the best solution. Take 1930’s Germany, the populace was given a problem and the Nazi solution was “The Jews are the Problem”, how do we solve the problem, they then got the majority to buy-in to their solution ( a little simplistic, but you get my point). As a leader or manager, sometimes decisions need to be made and buy-in will take place at a later time. The author’s main point is frustration over trying to get an overall consensus when you have so many points that can veto or stop progress. This is the problem in Govt. and any business that departmentalizes itself. That is why IBM fell apart and couldn’t compete against Apple. That is also what happened to GM, Ford and Chrysler. The companies that empowered their managers to make a decision have been the most successful in the last 20 years. This is also why the OWS movement will fall apart, when you try to function wholly on consensus, progress will never come and you will be mired in indecision and infighting. The most radical elements will make a decision for the group and then force everyone to go along, thus my example earlier of the Nazi’s.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 11:25pm@Jabber,
I just skimmed through the first part, and I noticed there was a lot of focus on collective problem solving. For example, the paper says the following.
“Social complexity can be can be understood and used effectively, but it can be ignored only at great peril.”
This is actually a Marxist philosophy. In fact, it was collectivist thinking that caused the recent housing bubble which sowed the seeds of its own destruction.
Only free market Capitalism can solve our economic problem, which is a problem of central planners who are literally incapable of doing anything but distorting the price system. Keep in mind that we haven’t had a free market for about 100 years – regulations AND protectionism are not part of a free market, and they both distort the price system.

I‘ve been to both Tea Party rallies and OWS rallies and the difference between the two couldn’t be more different than night and day. The Tea Party solution is smaller government where as the OWS is a great expansion of government. Tea Party generally wants to return to the principles of freedom found in the constitution. OWS wants to do away with it and become a socialist state. Even the character of people found at either rally greatly differ. Countless American Flags with patriotic spirit is found at Tea Parties, where as little to no flags are seen at OWS, and there is a strong spirit of entitlement found at OWS rallies. The plan has been laid out in front of us for years. They are in control of everything and I believe our own fate is in jepordy. Freedom to people is taken for granite and we could all be in a situation that would be covert from what they have witnessed.
I think it is too late for a party and they know that. I’m sorry to say the reprecussions and inflation of our lifestyle is about at the end of our rope, by design. I can go on and on about agenda 21 and the establishment earmarks but the collective isn’t worth saving.

They look like children still living off their parents or homeless people looking for more of a hand out, there are no other demographic to this movement. Its pathetic, and nobody cares about their message anymore,…. nobody. Why don’t you stop being a parasite and get a job and start paying into taxes instead of receiving your fed income tax return which each one of you hypocrites gets if you actually work? 48 percent of the public pay NO Federal income tax whatsoever yet those are the people who think that the top 1% that currently pays 40% of the federal income tax needs to pay more? America must be retarded to even listen to these morons in the first place. Do some research before you open your fat, lazy mouths next time and maybe people will follow your movement instead of being embarrassed that you are Americans.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 9:43pmThe problem is that the Republican and Democratic Parties have moved so far out of mainstream America they don’t know what it looks like anymore. They are trying to get everyone to think like their party instead of the party representing how the people think. Ron Paul is the only candidate that is real and has integrity.
Report Post »If Ron Paul wins in the caucus and is not nominated, the Republican Party is worthless and will fade away. Ron Paul will get votes for president even if other Republicans want to deny it and fight it. Ron Paul deniers will be the ones who hand the election to Obama again.

I am an Airborne Infantryman; it’s not about letting the terrorists get away. Its about when to fight and how to fight.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 9:55pmI am also a former Airborne Infantryman (11C). I think a President Paul would be dangerous for our country. But I would like to know what the hell A “Ron Paul denier” is? There is a Rep. Ron PAul. I don’t deny that. I disagree with the idea that he is fit to be POTUS.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 10:02pmI understand the idea of not compromising on principles. The Primary race is the perfect place to campaign hard for your candidate and point out differences. But I’ve heard over and over from Paul supporters.. “if not Paul, then none at all” and to me that sounds like an abusive husband (if I can’t have her then no one will!) Are you saying that you will vote for Obama if Paul is not the nominee? Honest question.

Posted on December 29, 2011 at 11:56pm82 and Wakeup, Do you think the greatest threat to our National Security is the Middle East or our economic condition right now? I believe that the biggest threat is our economic situation. The sad thing is, I believe that ab economic collapse of the entire world is going to happen no matter who we elect as POTUS. What happens if the entire world economy crashes? Do you have any thoughts on that? Will our next POTUS go along with the NWO through the U.N. and hand them the keys to our country or will our next POTUS fight to keep the rule of law under the Constitution and Bill of Rights and truly believe that individual liberty cannot be taken away? Will Iran really be a threat when this happens? Things are going to get very bad very quick and I do hope that we get to the elections before this happens. My opinion.

Posted on December 30, 2011 at 10:41amUnmolested, the Germans may have perfected the A-Bomb first. The decision to lay back until all of the ideal Libertarian provisos are engaged would be a formula for disaster. The death and destruction as a result of WWII could have been worse under a real Libertarian president. Once the Germans perfected the bomb, they would have had the option of making sure that no other could build one and they would be way better at enforcing it than the UN. All of the personal freedom that Libertarians love would vanish unless you were German or a German lackey. This is all speculation on my part but what tolerance do you have for my scenario being correct? Shall we be neutral until there is a ten percent chance of disaster or must it be 95%? The cost of a miscalculation seems to go up as time goes on and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction goes on. The only way I would feel safe with a Libertarian president would be for all other world presidents and dictators to also be Libertarian.
