Double Gulp No More: 7-Eleven Reduced Drink Size Even Before NYC Crackdown

We wonder if New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg knows that before he announced his proposed ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces, 7-Eleven had already reduced its 64-ounce “Double Gulp” by 14 ounces.

Why did the convenience store giant shrink the size of its “Double Gulp”?

It’s not what you think. Contrary to what you might assume, 7-Eleven didn’t change sizes in preparation for Bloomberg’s controversial ban. No, it was for something much more practical: “Double Gulps” were too big for cup holders in most American cars, said 7-Eleven spokeswoman Margaret Chabris.

“It was a request for something that was a little more car-friendly,” she told The Daily.

7-Eleven estimates that 25 percent of the U.S. population lives within a mile of one of its stores, The Daily reports.

“The chain sells nearly 38 million gallons of fountain drinks per year worldwide, or enough to fill 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools,” the report adds.

Because of its ability to provide so many Americans with sugary goodness, The Daily asked Chabris whether she believes 7-Eleven has a responsibility to help fight obesity. She responded by pointing out that the chain sells an awful lot of diet and sugar-free drinks.

“As for the size of the containers, she said 7-Eleven was merely responding to demand,” the report adds. “While declining to give specific numbers, Chabris said sales of the 50-ounce Double Gulp remain the fastest-growing of all the company’s cup sizes.”

The store’s business philosophy, according to Chabris, is simply: “If it didn’t sell, we wouldn’t still be carrying it.”

But let‘s say you just can’t go on without you favorite mondo-sized 7-Eleven über-gulp. Don’t worry, The Daily has good news for you:

Lovers of the old 64-ounce drink size need not despair. It’s still possible to find at least one other chain that still sells half-gallon containers of soda. A monster offering from Roy Rogers is available at several of the chain’s restaurants located along the New Jersey Turnpike, as part of a special deal on 64-ounce insulated plastic mugs whose thick handles appeared sized for a thirsty gorilla.

An employee at the franchise in the travel plaza near Haddonfield, N.J., said the $6.99 mugs are particularly popular with families who want to keep a lot of soda cold and share it on long drives.

I knew a real skinny middle aged guy, who had always hated fat people. He said he would rather be dead, than be fat. He got his wish. One day he just fell over dead.

The media and the Government just stirs up hate toward fat people. Fat people costs the tax payers NO MORE than skinny folks. They are no more of a burden to insurance, hospitals, or society.
It’s all made up lies, to stir up hate and prejudice, and to mainly draw your attention away from the real problems in America.

It’s just class warfare against fat people.

They say, “Oh, we‘re just worried about people’s health!”
Worried about fat people’s health, huh? What about pundits (like Leonard Pitts Jr. and Kathleen Parker of the Miami Herald) whose columns mock fat people, describing them as “waddling around America’s sidewalks” ? And other columnists who call fat people “pigs”? I‘m sure being compared to farm animals isn’t exactly good for anyone’s health. And since some people have a tendency to eat when they’re upset, these nasty remarks have just made the problem worse. Nice work!

It’s all about controlling people…and an axe to grind with businesses like McDonald’s, Burger King, Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

If they‘re so concerned about people’s health, why aren‘t they discouraging other activities far worse to people’s health (like unsafe sex)? If you’re fat, you can reverse it with diet and exercise. If you have AIDS, there’s no cure. All you can do is take a pill (which costs 40 cents a day) to slow down your eventual death.

Just a thought, everyone with a clue knows that stress is the factor that causes more serious health problems, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes. I wish these morons would manage their own lives and leave the rest of us alone. Any person that has certain types of cancers and many other health issues may have weight issues for which there are not solutions and over which they have no control. These anorexic, bullemic, control freaks can drop dead while jogging, they don’t have all the answers to everything. The continuous arrogance and dictatorial intention of the WH occupiers is pitiful and will be reflected in history ad nauseum.

    I remember when –
when I would buy the biggest soda possible with ice to have to drink on the 2 hour drive to church and back (only liquid available for 6 hours) on hot summer days in the dry Arizona desert. It was a lifesaver.

It occurs to me ” Who’s making the case” that these large drinks, popcorn, large candy bars are a single serving to be consumed at a single sitting. Case in point have you ever gone to see a movies with friends and passed the popcorn around for all to share. Can one not look at a chocolate cake and make the same pronouncement that there are to many calories and the baker should make them available to the public only by the single slice.
Is this not a good example of “Hi I’m from the Government and I am here to Help You”?

Ever seen the really old Pepsi advertising? A 12 oz bottle was TWO servings. Back then it was a rare treat to have a soda. What would those folks think of us now?

Yes, but back in the good old days, a 10 oz. soda had a kick to it. If a person would drink 5 of the old six oz. cokes at one time, I think you would die. They were not just colored water.

Don’t think we need our Nanny State to make food decisions for us, that’s just so creepy.
Yes, we do have a gravely serious obesity epidemic–something that costs Americans billions of dollars every year–but I nevertheless think that food choices are up to the individual. Food addicition leading to grave obesity is just that–an addiction, same as alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, hoarding addiction, etc.–the addictions’ dynamics are the same, but the particulars are different. I believe addictions (all types) are possibly the greatest national scourge our nation faces at this time.

Never liked NYC…Now, fighting obesity is NOT the role of anyone except the individual. If a double qtr. pounder with cheese has the same calories as a 64. oz soda, the soda is a 1.29 and the qtr pounder is 3.29 with tax that’s 5 bucks…One could satisfy the taste buds by getting a kids happy meal for 2.50…and it comes with a toy too!

Or, I guess you can spend twice the money and end up with twice the weight!!!

I don‘t drink soda but I’ve noticed over the years that cans of soup and veggies have been getting smaller while the price keeps going up.

I’ve been wondering just how small they will get? I’d hate to see a 2oz yogurt but that is where we are heading.

Take a fast corner and have the whole thing spill all over the gear shift.
I tend to carry my own liquid from the house anyway. Perrier with a paper towel wrapped around it suits me. So my opinion here is sorta disqualified. But I stand with the freedom to buy the biggest dam gulp in the whole dam universe. End transmission New York.

Pilot and Flying J‘s still also carry the 64ouncers but I like the 50oz idea because the 64s DON’T fit in the bleeping cupholders.
Nanny Loonberg just gives us normal folks more and more reasons to stay out of his city.
