Swiss Muslim Activists Sport Nazi-Style Yellow Stars to Protest Discrimination

Swiss Muslim activists took to the streets of Bern over the weekend to protest policies they characterize as discriminatory. But it wasn’t their demonstration that got the attention, rather their wearing yellow stars on their clothing resembling the symbol Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi era.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reports some 2,000 showed up to Saturday’s rally sponsored by the Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (ICCS):
Protesters wore a yellow star sticker printed with the word “Muslim” reminiscent of the one that the Nazis forced Jews to wear during the Third Reich. Some protesters constructed a plastic model of a mosque with minarets, which are banned in Switzerland.
Edith Bino, president of the Jewish community in Bern, told the Basler Times that she found the use of the yellow star “so obviously wrong that it could not be taken seriously.”
And Yves Kugelmann, editor in chief of the Jewish newspaper Tachles, said he found the choice of symbols “simply idiotic.”
“It is regrettable when legitimate concerns are raised using false comparisons,” Kugelmann told the Basler Times. He said that discrimination against Muslims is a theme that must be taken seriously in Switzerland, “but not in this cheap way.”
The star that ICCS designed has eight points, not six as in the Star of David. In the middle, the word “Muslim” appears as opposed to “Jude” that European Jews under Nazi rule were forced to wear in the years leading up to and including the Holocaust.
Two mainstream Muslim groups in Switzerland called the star usage “unethical” and a “cheap provocation” and told supporters to stay away from the rally.
JTA quotes ICCS head Nicolas Blancho defending the symbol choice to the Tages Anzeiger newspaper. He said:
“Muslims are treated as second-class citizens and are discriminated against, for example because they wear a headscarf or because of their name when they look for an apprenticeship or are looking for an apartment.”
It reported that among the speakers was Lauren Booth, sister-in-law of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. An outspoken pro-Palestinian activist and a journalist for Iran’s PressTV, Booth is a Muslim convert and wears a veil.
According to the BBC, 400,000 Muslims live in Switzerland, making it the second most prominent religion in the country after Christianity. In 2009, Swiss voters approved a referendum banning the construction of any new minarets. The sponsors of the proposal said “minarets are a sign of Islamization.”
One English language news site in Switzerland, The Local, reports that ICCS was founded by Swiss converts to Islam shortly before the referendum to ban minarets:
The organisation, which has more than 2,000 members, professes a conservative interpretation of Islam and has often made headlines in Switzerland for its provocative campaigning.
The adoption of the Nazi symbol is particularly ironic in light of the rampant Holocaust denial in the Muslim world whom these activists, including Lauren Booth, regularly defend. The most prominent denier: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in his doctoral thesis titled “The Other Side: the Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism” described Nazi persecution of the Jews as a “Zionist fantasy, the fantastic lie that six million Jews were killed.”
The latest example: the UN agency that runs the schools for Palestinian refugees is facing a major backlash in Gaza, the West Bank and Jordan for its efforts to introduce the subject of the Holocaust to history lessons.

Posted on November 3, 2011 at 6:40amI live in Switzerland, and it is true that there are many Muslims here, mostly from North Africa. I was afraid of Muslims before moving to Europe, because of of 9/11. But they are normal people. I have met many, from all walks of life — and all the ones I have met were nice, decent people, not fanatics.My Muslim friends know that I am Jewish and it is not even slightly a problem for them. American policies in the Middle East are a problem for them though, as are Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians. They are very open to frank discussions about that, and I have had terrific political debates with them.
As for being discriminated against in Swizterland–the Swiss are wary of foreigners in general. They have a small country (7 million I think) with a very high standard of living and generous social benefits, and are inundated with immigrants (me being one of them :)). They do not want to lose the character of their country and they can be cool toward all foreigners.

It is a mistake to see your foot-washing Muslim neighbors not currently openly involved with terrorism as good citizens who accept pluralism, constitutional values, and Western notions of human rights. They don’t. These things violate their basic religious dogma as does the concept of freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and equality of rights for women. When in the minority, Muslims cringe and humble themselves and demand special rights. When they are a majority, their true nature outs and then all we see is the natural Muslim desire to exist in a benighted, brutal, nasty, unchanging and impoverished state.

The concepts of ‘American exceptionalism,’ militarism, support for an unrestrained free-market, are used by the American right to justify any and every transgression against human rights at home and abroad. Conversely, you are right, Socialism belongs to the left direction of the arrow. Things like Universal Health Care, Social Security, minimum wage, OSHA, public libraries, parks, and beaches are all socialist in nature. I happen to think those are good things.

Islamic culture is full of gorgeous art and architecture. I am not sure why I need to prove this to you–every major museum contains proof of it, as do many lovely cities all over the world. Same thing with science, literature, and philosophy.
It is true that much of the Islamic world is currently troubled, some countries more than others. There are many reasons–a huge youth population, governmental corruption, illiteracy of women and denial of equal access to the workplace, etc. And remember that ‘Islam’ is not monolithic–the former Soviet republics that are mostly Muslim states have an over 95% literacy rate. Iran has more women in graduate school than men.
These problems do not mean that Islamic culture is ‘bad’ or ‘evil.’ It means that there is room for positive change and improvement. Don’t malign a billion people. It’s silly.

There are so many radicals within the ranks of Muslims world-wide the few who come across as reasonable certainly don’t make up for the literally millions who advocate violent jihad.
One of the greatest crimes by the elites in the West is inundating our societies with third world people who are a threat to our well-being, our culture and the overall peace. There are far too many of them who amount to no more than a squabbling mish-mash of tribes who emigrated westward to make money and acquire power and control for their tribe, but most of all they want their tribesmen to rule whatever country in which they might happen to reside.
The ideology of love and tolerance is a ghastly ploy to force acceptance by the Western populace of people whose main aim is to change everything to their liking while their customs, obscene laws and culture become dominant.
China, Korea and Japan are the nations of the future, due to their homogeneity, which makes them strong. Try to convince them to import third world, contentious hordes into their societies, because diversity would strengthen them, and they would politely listen, then when you left the room they would roll around the floor laughing with unrestrained ridicule..

Why not? The whole of the House of Islam is reprehensible. It is culture based on deception and usurpation. Islamic culture is incapable of generating new knowledge. It is a retrograde culture that invariably drives high cultures into dhimmitude.

So instead of outright forced conversion or slaughter, the Christians and Jews would be allowed to remain somewhat unmolested as long as they acknowledged the superiority of the Muslim. However, as 100,000 dead Lebanese Christians and Israel’s beleaguered Jewish population have discovered over the years, these guarantees have proved worthless!

This, of course, is not true. However, statistics can be used to make lots of different points. For example, over 90% of all violent crime in the world is committed by men. This is absolutely a true fact. What conclusions shall we draw from that? Shall we argue that men are irredemably ‘bad’ and then the opposing side will argue that men are not entirely evil, because they also created lots of wonderful things in the world? It would be silly.
People are people. Islam, like all religions, is full of irrational beliefs. In the Western world, we have neutered religion’s hold on society to the point that it is mostly harmless now. The Islamic world still needs to go through this change. It will happen.

I appreciate art and literature of all cultures. It makes my life more enjoyable and meaningful. I promise it will do the same for you.
As for what Muslims did in the middle ages in Cordoba–I don’t doubt there was persecution, but most scholars agree that the treatment of religious minorities in Andalus was better than the treatment of religious minorities in Christian lands at the same time. I also know that during the 14th century in Christian Europe, Jews were murdered brutally during the Black Plague, because they did not die at the same high rate as the Christians, and were suspected of poisoning the wells. I also know that in Spain after the sucess of the Reconquista, there was much persecution of Jews and Muslims.
Every nation, every culture has glorious and shameful episodes in its history. It is not helpful to understanding to think in black and white terms.

Islam on the other hand deflates both faiths, teaches that Jews are to be scorned and wiped out. Takes Christ’s divinity away from him and elevates a pedophile who converted the arabs at the end of a sword, to the position of God’s prophet.

3. Christian music, radio, and television allowed to be broadcast in every Muslim country.
4. Churches allowed to build, and operate unmolested in every Muslim country.
5. Same freedoms for Jewish symbols and synagogues.
THEN and ONLY then will we begin a dialogue about minarets on your mosques.

Protesting laws that purposefully treat a group as second class or worse while citing a historical example of where such discrimination can lead, in my opinion, is a way of learning from the Holocaust. However, referencing a historical event you deny having ever occurred is extremely hypocritical. “We don’t believe it happened unless believing helps our cause.”
