Dramatic Footage Captures Hit-and-Run… and the Victim Could be Charged (Graphic)

This story contains graphic images that may be disturbing to some. Discretion is advised.

A bout of violence between a taxi driver and a group of people on the street over the weekend in Canada left one man in the hospital after a hit-and-run. Now, the driver has been charged and is awaiting his bail hearing, but those involved in violence against the vehicle could face charges as well.

A video posted on YouTube Sunday shows the face off between those on the street in Montreal and the driver. According to the man filming the altercation, the passenger had gotten out of the cab and closed the door loudly spurring the conflict. Now outside of the vehicle, the former passenger along with others kicks the car several times. Over the seconds that follow, a small crowd forms in the street and the taxi begins to turn on them. The driver then runs completely over one of the men — as if he were a speed bump — and drives away.

See the conflict for yourself (Content warning: strong language and some disturbing images):

The Toronto Star reports the driver, Guercy Edmond, was brought to court Monday and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, hit-and-run and dangerous driving. He is set to receive a bail hearing Wednesday.

This blurry image from the footage shows the crowd and a point at which one person jumps on top of the taxi. (Image: YouTube screenshot)

But Edmond may not be the only one being charged in the incident. The Star reports a 42-year-old man involved in the violence against the car and, Benoit Kapelli, 23, who was run over — currently in stable condition in the hospital — could both be charged as well.

Here’s another, closer angle filmed of the violence and subsequent hit-and-run (Content Warning: Very disturbing images):

According to Gawker, Edmond’s attorney Yves Vaillancourt said Edmond felt he was under attack. ”He didn’t understand why he (was arrested by the police). He feels like he was a victim, too,” Vaillancourt said.

If it happened here the violent thug would sue the driver, sue the cab company, sue the car manufacturer and sue the city for not protecting him. He would make millions and the guy trying to earn a living , not even defending himself, but fleeing from a violent mob will go to jail.

The taxi driver could have left that situation on several occasions before it escalated. The legal questions are, Why did he stick around? (calling police, talking to supervisor on radio), Was he told to stay at the scene? The idiot with the improvised face lift will probably not profit from this considering he substantially contributed to his own injuries. I’m not familiar with the Canadian legal system.

people who engage in dangerous violent acts should not complain when finally they get hurt. STUPID people are why everything in life is more expensive, complicated. The STUPIDS are most always at the bottom of of societies ills. Like Ron White says,‘you can’t fix stupid’ However running them over with a cab is a very good start.

A liberal watches this video and thinks that the driver did something horrible, ignoring the aggressive mob surrounding the car.

Yeah, it sucks to get run over. It is also easily avoidable by not standing in the street attacking someone’s car.

the exact same argument could be said about the people in the streets. both parties involved could have left at any time.

that being said, pick a fight with a car thinking the driver wont do anything to you, or thinking, what’s he gonna do…run over me? …why yes…yes he could. just because you think the driver “can’t“ or ”won’t” doesn‘t mean they won’t. lesson learned. dont stand infront of a car thinking the driver won’t do anything. piss them off enough, they lose ability to make rational decisions. or a better way to phrase it, “ they dont give a rats p00p ”. funny before the incident you hear someone saying, he’s ruining his career…..really??? at that point, doesn’t anyone really think to themselves “oh no, my career is over?”. i’m sure the driver is seeing red, not thinking clearly at all. i’m not defending the driver. but wow, the way ppl think sometimes fascinate me. i have to admit tho, i’m glad noone died, but i‘m sure i’m not the only one that had that little voice inside them scream out….take that A hole, you got what you deserved!. Cheers mates, and look both ways before crossing the streets :O)

In the face of overwhelming numeric superiority, no one may be legally restricted to weapon parity in either number or kind. When you are being beaten by a dozen hands, you may not be restricted to defense only by hands. In such a situation, escalation has already been achieved by outnumbering the target. The target would not be considered to be further escalating by using an implement, whether a car or a gun, in his defense against those outnumbering him.

And the people attacking the cab should be charged. They weren’t attacking the cab in reaction to him running somebody over. Them attacking the cab is what precipitated somebody getting run over. More and more people kept gathering and getting more and more violent, it was a mob situation.

The taxi driver had time to get out of there. That said, he was at the end of his rope.

I think some one was saying Bourgsie in Canadian dialect of French. The taxi drive is working poor or the working LMC. The mob are leeches on the hide of the working man.

The f_cking mob some of who seemed to be drunk have gall to call the taxi driver Bourgsie?

I think police cars need cameras running much of the time in a 360 degree circle. I amend that though. I think taxis need them too.

That & if you don’t arrest mobs expect more of this in the future.

It does appear the cab driver did more than he needed to to get away. He would have been better off to take the first available line of flight and quickly head that way. That said, if I were in a car being attacked I would feel entitled to protect my own life at the expense of the attackers if necessary.

What a bunch of dopes. Taxi driver needed to get out of there as his life was in danger and there were 10 people or so attacking his car. Taxi driver needed to simply get the heck out of there instead of making a U-turn. All parties were wrong and the OWS types need to be put in their place or their anger, bitterness and destructible behavior will spiral completely out of control. This is what happens when you start jumping on cars, kicking doors and throwing stuff. There are consequences.

Your statement “In America it’s something you do until you start your career.” Is not a true statement. What is wrong with driving a cab. Many people in many countries including the US make a good living driving a taxicab. Your remarks seem to belittle people who chose a career driving a taxi instead of a career as a dishwasher, doctor, mechanic, chef, maid or lawyer, all of which are honorable career choices. This was a story about an unfortunate incident not about Canada or the US career choices. What is your career choice, arrogant American?

If I lost my military contract tomorrow I would merely switch to Bio-medical or some other tech part. Got a problem with that? And YES I DO think that someone who aspire’s to be a dishwasher/cabdriver/waiter is aiming low and could do much better by aspiring (for example) to OWN a cab company/restaurant creating jobs for others to likewise elevate themselves.
