Cue the cliches about a wing and a prayer.
Dramatic video shows 22-year-old Argentinian pilot Dino Moline managed to activate his plane’s ballistic parachute after one of his wings snapped off mid-air during a recent show. He walked away from the crash with just a burnt foot:

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 1:15pmIt looks like they forgot to unload the pot before they started doing acrobatic maneuvers with the plane. Either that or that was one fat Mexican.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:21pmThe aircraft is a Rans S-9 Chaos, its an amateur (kit) built aircraft. The maneuver was a “Lomchevak” which is Czhech for headache. It will overstress 95% of all aircraft made, the Rans is a little light for this in my opinion, apparently so. There is almost NEVER a small plane crash from structural failure with the exception of people who insist on flying into a Cat 5 T-storm. The best example of BRS chutes on aircraft today have been on the Cirrus designs. While quite a few lives have been saved, stats still show that pilots are hesitant to use them until too late due to the complete destruction of the airframe. They are not made to save the plane. I still prefer to glide down if need be, which is how I make every landing, and land on a road. In almost 30 years of aviation I have yet to do it, but it’s fun to practice.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:17pmThe falling is OK. It‘s the landing that’s bad. And the fire – Yikes.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 11:41amHigh stress movements like that should use the chutes but don’t make it manditory for any 1 to get them. I still believe in that small section of darwinisim that the stupid ones will find a way to die sooner before they procreate thus making the common sense folk flourish. Kudos for your forsight Italian stunt pilot!

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:59amThe bad thing is that there are conversion kits to equip ALL aircraft with this safety device; however it has been deemed “too costly”. It’s on Airforce 1 & 2 though.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:58amI saw a 70″ model of a similar plane in the same predicament….The pilot was able to land it without more damage …awsome.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:47am@OLDOLDTIMER,
That would be an absurd requirement that would keep most people from flying. It wouldn‘t be worth the cost to retrofit our 1980’s aircraft with parachutes…plus, our WINGS DON’T FALL OFF. We can much more safely glide somewhere if we lose an engine.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:37amBuy the parachute maker a beer and then go kick the plane manufacturer’s ass.
Report Post »TSUNAMI-22
Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:38pmWhy is it automatically the manufacturers fault? Maybe that wing failure was due to the pilot over-stressing the airframe in previous flights. Maybe a potential flaw in the spar was not seen in the annual inspection?
The manufacturer had the sense to include a parachute for additional safety.
I think your answer was a tad irresponsible.

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 4:37pmMost aircraft used for stunt flying are custom built either by the owners of the plane, or the construction is overseen and built to the owner/ pilot specs. Besides, the forces involved in stunt flying are far greater than anything that standard civilian aviation aircraft are designed for. I guarantee ANY production aircraft will have limitations/ ratings placed on them by the manufacture as far as performance specs just to cover themselves from someone like you who decides to sue because you decided to do something with the aircraft that it was not designed to do!

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:39amAll small aircraft should be required to have those emergency chutes. Especially ultralites.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 9:43amHeard of these parachutes. They do seem to work for such emergencies.
Good thing he did not need to be searched by TSA, or they would most likely have confiscated the planes parachute since the name ‘ballistic’ is included in it.
Thank God he is alive.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 10:21amI guess Oldoldtimer never read the story about the folks who burned to death while their plane slowly floated to the ground, in a ball of flames, after the ballistic chute was deployed for an in-flight fire. Personally, I think those who support mandatory regulation are idiots.
