Dramatic Vid Shows Shootout Between Cops and Suspect: ‘I’m Hit!’

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) — It began with a sheriff’s deputy investigating a report of gunfire at a trailer park. By the time it was over, the deputy and the suspected shooter were dead, and a police officer was wounded in a gunbattle with the suspect.

“This is the worst day of my entire law enforcement career,” said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly, who has been sheriff for 24 years.

Dramatic Vid Shows Shootout Between Cops and Suspect: Im Hit!

Deputy Suzanne Hopper was shot Saturday as she tried to photograph a footprint in the Enon Beach mobile-home park in western Ohio, Kelly said. Hopper, who was married last year and had two children, didn’t have the opportunity to return fire or take cover, he said.

Police officers were trying to talk to the shooting suspect when he fired on them from inside a trailer, and a German Township officer was wounded in an exchange of gunfire, Kelly said. There were “many, many, many” shots fired by the suspect and eight officers, he said.

The wounded officer, Jeremy Blum, was hospitalized in fair condition, a hospital supervisor said.

Authorities were still investigating and weren’t ready to say whether police gunfire killed the suspect, whose identity wasn’t released, Kelly said. It’s possible the suspect, who had “a history” with the sheriff’s office, killed himself, he said.

Enon Beach resident Angelina Inman said she looked out of her trailer at the park, which sits near a highway, to see the deputy lying on the ground. She watched as another officer tried to reach her body.

“He was itching to get her,” Inman said. “He kept radioing in, can he please get her, and he was told no because it wasn’t secure. You could see that male sheriff crying – he wanted to get her, he wanted to get her bad.”

Sgt. Dustin White had accompanied Hopper to the trailer park, which is just southwest of Springfield and about 50 miles west of Columbus, and was interviewing a family whose trailer had been shot at when he heard Hopper scream, Kelly said.

“We believed we had an active shooter, which we did, and we wanted to get her some medical attention, but we didn’t want to get anyone else shot,” the sheriff said.

Enon Beach acts as a seasonal campground with some summer-only residents and others who live there year-round. A portion of Interstate 70 was closed twice for a total of about an hour because the trailer park is so close to the roadway, Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Gary Lewis said.

A girl who lives in the trailer park said she knew the shooting suspect and he had a temper.

“He was a quiet person, but if you made him mad – he wasn’t very pleasant,” 15-year-old Chelsea Bagley said.

Her mother’s boyfriend, John Burkhardt, said he heard the shots fired in the neighborhood. Police then arrived, Burkhardt said, and for several minutes authorities asked the suspect over a loud speaker to come out and surrender.

“They give him 25 chances to walk out of there,” Burkhardt said. “They were begging him to come out, but he wouldn’t come out.”

Shortly after, Burkhardt said, authorities opened fire on the man’s trailer.

“All hell broke loose,” he said.

Police threw smoke grenades before storming the trailer and finding the suspect dead, Kelly said.

He said he had hired Hopper in 1999 and had known her since the police academy.

Hopper, 40, was known for her dedication to the job and adherence to keeping herself safe, Kelly said. The former officer of the year was wearing a protective vest Saturday, but it didn’t shield her from the gunfire that killed her, he said.

“If she would have known there was a suspect in that trailer she’d have never walked that way without additional units and without taking cover,” Kelly said.

Hopper once went six straight years without calling in sick and often put on charity events for the Special Olympics and other causes, Kelly said.

“Her personnel file is filled with accolades and commendations and always service before self,” he said.

It is quite obvious that there is officers not worthy of the uniform.Should we be suprised? We have a president who is not worthy of his office, and congress, and supreme court justices who are unworthy of theirs. The whole of society has forsaken the supreme Law of the land by which all were created. It is by that denial of truth that all the basis for right and wrong is skewered. There are good and bad in All sectors of society.I myself and many I know of have lost a lot of respect for so called official authority.Nothing personal to anyone but once you get screwed by them enough times you tend to be more predjudiced. The victims tend to be the otherwise law abiding citizens and criminals have more rights. The justice system is in fact corrupted. Some of the good cops will attest to that.Hats off to the good officers out there because it is a thankless job that can be very frustrating when you do everything you can, apprhend the criminal, and the court system just lets them go.With one officer down I would have set out to eliminate the threat also. The video didn’t appear as if they done it gracefully though. Those rifle shots would go all the way through the trailer and hundreds of feet out the other side.Maybe they had clear backdrop though.A rifle at that distance will drill through 1/4 inch steel plate and keep going. Its probably good he’s dead .Save the taxpayers to prosecute a murderer and keep him for 25 years. So sorry for the female officer and family though.Hope she was saved.

Uh– Fenres – That’s their job.. Until he’s shooting again. The articles says he opened fire, but from the picture of the officer going down it looks like he was moving in with a drawn weapon. The trailer looks quite shot up and the officer hasn’t even hit the ground…

They gave him ‘25 chances to come out’. Maybe they should have given him 26. Hard to imagine if the guy wasn’t shooting that nobody would drive in to get the first officer. If they didn’t have her yet – why weren’t they using the smoke grenades? A concussion grenade?

Sometimes when you treat every person as though they’re guilty, bad karma will smite thee when least expected. Maybe it‘s God’s way of keeping score for all the innocent victims killed when the cops chased a guy 90 mph through a neighborhood because he had a warrant for an unpaid parking ticket and didn’t want to go to jail.

D H.. chasing somebody 90mph is NOT investigating, anything. PERIOD.. The depths of the police state run deep. as do the currents of curruption.. all i know for sure is that when we as a people started asking for paid protection, instead of protecting ourselves, we opened pandoras box.. Plus maybe i should have been a little more clear.. I am sad for the children and her family, a loss such as this is tragic no matter what the circumstance..

Did these wonderful “Heroes” even for ONE MOMENT thought about the consequences of showering a RESIDENTIAL area with hundreds of pieces of hot lead?

What about the kids in the surrounding homes or parks?

Just from the 15 year olds observation we should know that their may be something wrong with the ‘perp’ Is this what we spend hundreds of billions for mental and behavioral health? Maybe the guy was undiagnosed. Maybe the cops should have hit the trailer with tear gas or a concussion grenade before shooting up the place.
I would have dragged my partner to safety no matter “Permission”. Quite possibly the ‘perp’ would have allowed that, wanted that. Thanks to the cops that remain good cops, but i have seen far too much in the way of bad cops spoiling the apple cart. Assaulting kids who they claim assaulted them, assaulting people they harassed with no cause in the first place. Dragging people to jail and filing every charge in the book because they ‘felt’ disrespected. I’ve witnessed all of these..

    Dirty Harry; mikemanners11:
You two have issues. I grew up and dealt with abusive cops in L.A. Still come across a knuckle head or two wearing sworn to protect and defend. Every cop is not bad and every organization/neighborhood has their proverbial 10% of undesirables. While I and my family have suffered at the hands of bad law enforcement officers, countless officers have also shown my family the utmost professionalism and courtesy–sometimes when it was not warranted.

Cops do not start high-speed chases. It is the fleeing criminal. These criminals are the cause and are responsible for putting the general public in danger.

Complainng about the use of sheets is shameful. This officer has a family. The should not have to see pictures of their mom/wife/sister’s body plastered on TV and in print. Most first responders extent the same courtesy to regular folks also.

I agree with the individual who suggested we thank law enforcement officers for their service to let them know we recognize their sacrifices.

The police officers killed and wounded during this incident were not the cause that lead to the effect. Police officers see the worst our society has to offer and, unfortunately, are targets.

“Cops do not start high-speed chases. It is the fleeing criminal. These criminals are the cause and are responsible for putting the general public in danger.”

That‘s a little like saying the burglar isn’t at fault for robbing a bank, it’s the fault of the people for putting money there.

I have seen those high speed chases get way out of control, thinking surely the cops know the runner has a biological bomb or something…then that TV nitwit Bunnell goes on ad infinitum about the runner trying to murder cops everytime he bumps a cop car while trying to flee. Lo & behold the runner did nothing more than having a blinker out but panicked because he has an oustanding warrant for not paying a parking ticket.

What you’re witnessing in these responses, is the result of too many cops having abused their authority and losing the respect of the people. When you cops go out in public, often what you confuse as respect is merely fear. Behind your back they laugh at you, and they spit in your food at the drive-thru. You have earned this. Get used to it.

Stop trampling our constututional rights and you may begin to make things better for yourself. Continue to deny these truthes, and it will only get worse.

In situations like this, police should use grenade launchers instead of exposing themselves to gunfire.
Fighting criminals who can do harm to officers and civilians, require tactics used in combat. Police make the mistake of using defensive tactics too often.

Funny how Cops weep sanctimoniously at the death of one of their own…..BUT when they kill an innocent person in one of their High Speed Chases or negligently shoot someone in the line of duty they don’t shed a tear.

    WHY?

Because they only CARE about fellow Cops – that is why. This mentality is called Tribalism – look it up.

My 93 year old aunt who lived on her own was being robbed by some new neighbors who moved in next to her. They would steal her SS checks and jewelery. We called a city detective about it and he just LAUGHED. My Aunt was not a Cop or a relative of a Cop so she DID NOT MATTER. Yeah…big joke huh?

Hey these “heros” get PAID well to carry a gun – that is what they signed up for. So save the tears for those innocents who pay for the price of Police arrogance.

Under the law, not much, unless she made the report. Your aunt did not die: there are crimes that go on every moment, unpunished. The cops can only do so much: the rest is our responsibility, from raising our children properly to securing our own domains. The reason why the officers shed a tear for their own is because the people that died are their friends. They trust each other with their lives and an uncommon bond is formed between them just like soldiers. Each incident is dynamic and all of the officers should be judged as individuals. To judge all officers for any incident that they did not have anything to do with is just irrational stupidity on your part. I can tell you have a deep seeded hatred for the police. That is your problem. See someone or take something. I bet the killer in the trailer had the same issues.

I agree. 99% of cops are power hungry egotistical psychopaths. I hope the 1% can start teaching what it means to protect liberty to these cops who don’t even understand their own oath of office. Protect and defend the constitution…and then they violate the 4th amendment ALL THE TIME. The sad thing is, they are trained to play games with people and trick them into relinquishing their rights. Screw cops…

      @MIKEMANNERS11

I hear ya. I have my share of police stories.

I think everyone here is forgetting something: Police are unionized… like any unionized body, they have good and bad members. You can’t treat all cops with respect. Some of them are dirtbags who abuse their power and union near-invincibility.

I know some awesome cops, as well as some terrible ones. And when it comes to unions, the good people are generally afraid to speak up. You don’t go against your union… your life will be made very difficult.

N37BU6 – once again, someone paints ALL of law enforcement with the same broad brush. All police departments are not unionized. My son in law is a police officer in a small Eastern North Carolina town, and they are not unionized. They get paid, all right – he makes just over $23,000 a year. For that, he works 12 hour shifts, two weeks on days followed by two weeks on nights. Weekends, holidays, DUI checkpoints, you name it. Not glamorous, certainly nothing he’s going to get rich doing. But he loves it – can’t imagine doing anything else. He’s a volunteer fireman in his off-duty time (what there is of it).
So get off the “high paid union thug” soapbox.

So you blame the cops for the accident outside of Dinuba, CA? The carjacker stole the car and the vehicle that was hit by the carjacker had 5 kids inside none wearing a seat belt, which is against the law in California. It must be the cops fault. I have personally responded to dozens of accidents in the fog out that direction when I was a firefighter (before I finished my degree in Computer Science). So I too was a public servant after getting out of the military. The fact that you say all cops have low IQ’s is a sad display of how ignorant you are. Yes there is a police state in this country taking over, but not all cops are bad guys. In fact most are really good kindhearted people who are willing to die to keep you safe. With all the gang issues in that area of California, and people dying every week from violence, the fact that you bring up an accident is even more telling of your inability to understand the reality of the world we live in. Obviously you have never been shot at. It is not easy to use restraint when bullets are flying. God Bless you

      @ Michael,

I’d rather deal with 30 gangbangers than a single dirty cop. At least with the gangbangers you kinda know where you stand going in. With a cop you never know, maybe he just learned a knew choke technique he’s been itching to try out. With a gangbanger I get to fight back – fight back against a dirty cop and you very likely pay a heavy price.

I hope you‘re learning through these posts that it isn’t just disgruntled arrestees who distrust cops. It is increasingly the domain of educated law biding citizens who have had their eyes opened and see the degradation of our constitutional rights.

      1) Saying “some cops are bad” is not doing that.

      2) You don’t need to be unionized to have dirtbags.

This made me laugh… it’s so unnecessarily over the top when compared to what I said. I don’t even recall mentioning pay, either. That was just your typical knee-jerk defense as the parent of a cop. Set the emotion aside when making an argument. Or at least learn to work through it.

Now everyone who isn’t unionized is squeaky clean, just because of your son? What I said doesn’t apply anymore? That humans are humans? I suppose if your son was a grocery ****** you’d be up in arms if I said “not all bag boys are good people”.

Some people on this site crack me up. I think the average IQ is in the 80s. Raw emotion, no logic… there is a balance, you know. Find it.

You’re just emotionally biased, and unable to set it aside and work through it. Overly defensive, and seeing arguments where there are none. If your son was a janitor, you’d probably be defending them as a group too.

Chances are, you are in the lower half of the American social class so you probably DO NOT pay any cop’s salary. Cops keep to themselves because they know most people have no more idea what cops go through, than the guy on the plane with the most frequent flyer miles deserves a vote on how to fly the plane. That goes for doctors, lawyers, politicians, THE MILITARY, priests, Boy Scouts and Govenor Palin. The public, people like you, assume they can extrapolate their experiences to blame the next poor unsuspecting soul for their misery and feel justified for whatever they do or say. Just like the guy in the trailer. We train for that. Some times we’re wrong. We learn to make honest apologies. We put our careers on the line for the violent threats as well as the social mistakes. The best investments municipalities make is a cops pension. Most don’t enjoy very much of it. As far as how we grieve, I could not care less what you think. I doubt you ever do.

Also, not sure what kind of hate you need to expunge from your system: busted by a cop for something embarrassing? Wife left you for a cop? Something like this? Doesn’t matter: there are those who understand respect and dignity, and then there’s you. Be intelligent, no matter your opinions, or be a liberal.

Dear Protoge, typical egotistical coppy answer. Everyone who has a negative opinion must be a disgruntled criminal. Typical. Your juvenile response goes to the image problem cops have – your ranks are generally filled with below averag IQ’d adrenelin junkies.

Trust me when I say that I’ve gone to great lengths not to need the assistance of cops in all but the remotest of scenarios. As the saying goes, call 911 and the cops show up in time to call the coroner. No thanks, I’ll handle it myself.

Let me tell you something as a wife of a police officer out here in Ohio…
The cops out here ARE a step above the average “cityizen”. Most of the departments in the small communities only have a few paid positions and the rest of them are “auxillary” police. Which means that they will put themselves on the line for FREE to keep you average “cityizens” safe. They do that because they are dedicated to what they believe in and the life that they have chosen as police officers. A lot of training and equipment cost goes into becoming a police officer. Mostly small departments are all that is available around here and in order to keep their commission as police officers they will join a small department so all of their training doesn’t go to waste. They are committed to keeping you safe, so that the next time you feel the need to criticize someone ask yourself when was the last time you put your pants on, stepped out from behind the safety of your computer, and put your butt on the line for anyone…for FREE???

My experiemnce is 50% of LEOs are good, and the other 50% are pretty much useless. I’ve bee privileged enough to be the recipient of the special treatment cops give those on “the inside.” Their friends and associates. The thin blue line exists and it is pure BS.

Cops all too often confuse comradere with right and wrong. Seen it myself, many times. And no, not from the perspective of a criminal, but from your side.

Work on cleaning up your image rather than summarily labelling everyone who criticizes cops as not knowing what they’re talking about.

Cops will get more respect when they stop creating tactics intended to allow them to beat the perp, such as them being trained to constantly chant “Sir, stop resisting,” when the perp is totally out of it. They will get more respect when they stop trampling 4th Amendment rights by calling their search of the perp’s car as “inventory” when it does not qualify under “incidental to arrest.”

These abuses happen regularly, and it is ruining what was once a fine, respectful profession.

I remember thinking to my self ” aren’t they supposed to be the good guys.” Wish I could trust them. Nowadays I just don’t. I have seen them break the law and trample the constitution with my own eyes just too many times. I think treating traffic stops as fishing expeditions has gone a long way to erode public trust. I blame the law makers far more than them though. I am sure if the nature of their job changed a bit it would be allot easier to wear the white hat once again. The “sheriff” who went to his makeshift training range, only to receive a 911 call that someone was shooting at my house, through the trees. The crazy lesbian ‘deputy’ who gets knocked out by a female she propositioned during a house call..
