Just a day after one small personal jet crashed on the street of a residential community in Germany, now a light plane has crashed into the backyard of a house in Santa Monica. As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, video has surfaced of the stunning rescue that ensued to save the student pilot involved in the crash. NBC and Fox have the GRAPHIC VIDEO:
Fox News reports that painters working on a near by home put out the fire with garden hoses and rescued the pilot, who miraculously survived with only a broken leg.
The Contra Costa Times was able to speak with federal investigators who are currently working to determine the cause of the crash:
“Fuel was pumped out of the downed single-engine Cessna after the accident, and the wreckage was removed from the crash site Monday night.
Allen Kenitzer of the Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed ‘into a residential backyard under unknown circumstances’ shortly after lifting off the runway
The plane first hit a cinder block wall, which helped absorb a lot of the energy of the crash, and clipped some tree branches, said Robert Trimborn of Santa Monica Airport, expressing surprise the pilot survived.”
The force of the crash bent the aircraft in half and ripped the wings off the plane. MyFoxLA.com reports that the crash has rehashed local debate over possibly closing the Santa Monica airport:
The Plane crashed in a home and backyard around 2:30 p.m. Monday at 21st Street and Navy. KTLA5 reports that one person on the ground, a painter at the home at the time of the crash, was injured by flying debris.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 8:20pmOh, this is great-more ammunition for the anti-aviation knuckleheads who want to close down KSMO and turn it into condos and shopping centers.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 8:55pmIt will probably close sooner than you think. Once the federal funded time commitment have expired the airport will close. A friend of mine who is in the know told me SMO city council wants to get rid of the FBO’s now. (I used to be based at HHR.)

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 7:07pmI was thinking while I was watching this on Fox earlier today, those guys are speaking spanish… if they are not legal… I sure hope somebody sponsors them, we need people who will rescue others instead of just recording.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 4:03pmIf I was that pilot I would be extremely grateful to those that rescued me from the wreckage and extremely angry at the person behind the camera. Instead of offering assistance, going for help, getting bandages, getting water, anything that might help the pilot they record a video. Simply unbelievable. The callousness is astounding. That’s where we are today, record it for possible fame rather then help.

Posted on August 31, 2011 at 8:44amLucky thing that pilot didn’t land in other areas of California. He would have been robbed and left for dead. His plane may have been picked over for aluminum scrap as well.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 4:03pmI’m sorry, but what makes you think this man isn’t “right with God”???? Didn’t you post the same thing in a Steve Jobs story? I know we‘re not supposed to judge so far as who is going to go to hell or heaven as that’s God’s job, not yours or mine. I don’t know why, but I almost find it offensive that you seem to insinuate in this post and maybe another that someone isn’t right with God when you, in fact, most likely have no knowledge of these people in real life. I know I don’t. Glad the guy survived. Why don‘t you spend a little more time worrying about yourself and not be so quick to judge people you don’t know in real life.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 3:02pmJust an observation,
Report Post »I will never understand this compulsion with shorts, sandals here.. You are flying in an airplane not at the beach, 2 tanks filled with 100 octane. If you have to make an unscheduled landing there is a very high probability of fire and the need for CLOTHES for protection or if you have to hike out. Ever wonder why military pilots have flight suits? So they can carry stuff, and most are made of nomex, somewhat flame retardant. I always fly in boots and long pants or my flight suit… If there would have been a fire, he would have really gotten burned crispy.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 2:57pmNeighbors want the airport to close because it’s dangerous. What came first, the airport or the neighborhood? If the airport was there first, then why build your home nearby then complain later? If the homes were there first, why allow an airport to be built so closeby?

I always wonder how one jackazz can always whip out his phone and capture some video he can put on the net while watching injured people lay there instead of helping.
