Dramatic video out of Australia shows a steeplechase horse jumping over a fence and into a crowd of spectators.

The horse, which Business Insider says is named Banna Strand, unseated its rider before its terrifying leap:

An 80-year-old woman and a two-year-old boy remain hospitalized after yesterday’s accident at the Grand Annual Steeplechase in Warrnambool. Five others were also injured.

Here’s the jump from one angle:

Sky News presents another angle, as well as reporting on the multiple injuries:

The horse was faultless. If you are going to put people on a blind field like that, you had better set up better protection (fences, barricades, etc.) so terrible things like this don’t happen.

I find it eerily interesting that RT covered this and that it went to a protest against animal cruelty. Are the commies now going to target Australia? More protests here perhaps?

I’m definitely not a tree-hugger or one of these wacky protester types, but……I’m truly sickened by events that exploit animals – when cruel treatment to the animal happens. I agree that man has dominion–but damn….it’s a sick mind who has no conscious when an animal suffers so needlessly.

BTW, most “horse people” are crazy. I’ve never seen such a nutty bunch. Such a beautiful creature & so easily disposed. Shameful.

And to the “horsecrazy” person who says “just grab the reins”–you’ve got to be kidding me? It’s easy to watch a video & blather about “what YOU would have done”. Things look pretty clear sitting on your far arse watching a video & commenting. You weren’t in the middle of all the unexpected commotion. Dingbat.

I hope the horse survived with no injuries. To think he avoided a lesser jump than crossed a 10 or 12 foot wall is amazing. Stuff happens at sporting events.

Horse racing can be a very brutal sport. They are bred in such a way that are less sturdy and more prone to injury. Look up the stats, it’s pretty eye opening.

The humans standing in front of a jump, for whatever reason, were totally at fault. Good golly, steeplechase jumps include brush jumps and a riderless horse would naturally be able to make the jump that he was trained to take. What idiots. Furthermore, horsecrazy is absolutely correct. What the heck moron would go to a horse race and know NOTHING about horses? Why did no one grab the reins as the horse ran by??? Inexcusable.

These PETA morons need to wake up. For one thing, steeplechase horses tend to be older than the flat track animals that people describe, above. It takes older legs, ones that have been strengthened due to age, that can take the punishment of running fast and jumping through fences. I have been watching NEVER BORING TB races since I was a toddler at tracks all over the country. Watching a 2yo break a leg at the 3/4 pole in front of the crowd is gut wrenching. Awful. I would be the first to agree that TB’s are run at WAY too early an age… but it isn’t about the horses. It’s about the money. Truly horrible things happen to TB’s because of the money… and not just at the tracks.

Totally agree. Horses hurt themselves just being out in the pasture, especially young TB’s. I think the horse should be commended for it’s bravery, treated for any injuries he may have, given a few months off to have fun and frolic and then consider a career as a jumper.

this video annoys me. why is it that not one of these morons grabbed the horses reins while he jumped and stood still. seriously? you mindless idiots didnt think to grab the horse and calm him down before he ran all over town? and whats with the bleeding hearts with the no racing signs? horse racing is great, I dont gamble but I re-train ex racers so they can be used as pleasure horses for the remainder of their lives. They are fantastic pleasure horses with firm training foundations set by the racing trainers. They make lovely hunter jumpers and dressage horses. I get SO sick of these people with their signs and opinions who know NOTHING about what they are standing for! Grab the horse you mindless drones!

Agreed Horsecrazy… it even looked like some of the workers of the track were there. Why the heck didn’t one of them think to grab the reins? Hopefully the people who got stomped on will be ok… and the jockey who was thrown, what a crappy way to end the day…

Unfortunately, that kind of thing does happen.

Race cars have left the track and gone into the stands; airplanes in air shows have crashed, and bulls have gored people at bullfights. Nut cases shoot people at malls. Things like that do happen.

I stay home and watch on my computer. “Film at 11.”

I have six rescued horses…one of them, “Frontier Hall”, is a race horse that I took right off the race track…he won 10 times his purchase price for his owner…(owner appreciated him so much that he decided to race him into the ground)…until finally at 3 years old (YES…I said…THREE YEARS OLD!) He was pushed so hard that he fractured his knee to bits! I took him when they were preparing to euthanize him…paid to have his knee surgically stabilized…and he is NOW my horse…and one of the nicest animals you have ever encountered…I immediately changed his name to “Brisco”…

I have seen just about every group, of every identity, protesting against everything. I attribute most of our broken system to the whiners, complainers, do-gooders, and busybodies.

THEY are the reason why idiot politicians have passed so many darned restrictions and legislation that we are now ENTOMBED IN OUR OWN CORNERS.

I remember when I first started working with horses. Had been at it for about a hr when one of the horses that was in our tacking barn wents nuts and broke her lead. She was rearing and freaking the other horses out, I was in there, run over to her, jumped up and grapes her halter and held her still till she calmed down. In was 13 at the time! One of those bye standard could have grabbed that horse. (btw, I love horse racing and jumping, but sadly u do have good & bad owners out there.
