Forget ‘Dumpster Diving’ — This Is Dumpster Living!

Gregory Kloehn lives in Berkeley, CA…for the moment. Since his home is on wheels, Gregory can move it fairly easily and live almost anywhere. His rolling residence did not start out as a “mobile home” or any kind of home. It was originally a dumpster!

Man Turns Dumpster Into A House

Is it a dumpster or a house? It’s BOTH! Watch this clip from video blogger Kim Aronson, it shows all of the upgrades to the dumpster and explains some of Mr. Kloehn’s thinking.

Hey! Go easy on this guy!

I’ve done my share of dumpster diving, and my children and I have enjoyed it immensely. Now we’ll have to knock first. Lest you sneer at such activities, there are a LOT of financially secure, and dare I say socially prominent folks, that view this activity as a calling. They don’t need it to survive, but it is a pleasant family outing, albeit in Ninja attire at 3:00 AM on trash morning.

I have a 20 ft. CONEX container that is awaiting modification before it’s moved to the mountain property for our second home. With a renovated dumpster(s), one could span the world and start with one as a THIRD residence (at the least). Does anyone suppose that these would meet code in Belize, Thailand, Australia or Sri Lanka?

In some countries, this guy’s place would be high-class housing. With what is heading our way financially, he is obviously a visionary.

Have you checked into the site for Tiny Houses? Houses (some mobile) that are less than 500 square feet. Some only something like 78 sq feet. They’ve been pushing this, so it makes me wonder if it’s what Agenda 21 has in mind. Everybody in tiny houses so we can fit more people into cities and leave the country for the “indiginous” life forms, i.e. nature.

I agree…..Agenda 21 stuff. I can just see little 10 X10 buildings packed so tight only a tiny electric car can get between them as far as one can see. I feel so bad for my grand children, not yet born.

Question, where did the guy get the dumpster in the first place. Dumpsters aren’t the usual thing people discard in the, well, dumpster. It wouldn’t be a very good idea for the very dry and hot Texas climate. It would be more of an OVEN than a home on wheels.

Hopefully it has a good ventilation system… because after a few of those Berkeley veggie burritos I’ll bet there is some incredibly “vibrant” creations on that little built-in toilet.

My question: If you have someone over to watch a movie do you:
    a) take dump in full view
    b) kick out friend for the night
    c) send friend on a beer/food run

Hippies with money live in berkeley, and in marin county. hippies with jobs live in san francisco. Hippies with neither, live in both locations, and rely on the guilt of other hippies to see them through, in exchange for votes and for trolling on theblaze.com.

There was a story about Japanese bargain hotels a few years ago. They were very inexpensive for all you got was a coffin size drawer to sleep in. This Dumpster thing has that beat in sq feet by a mile.
I’m still looking in the Northern Rockies for a great cave to build in. I figure having a couple of miles of stone at my back and a whole lot of cement to the front would make I nice place to hang out while waiting for Yellowstone to erupt. Then who cares.

Mini houses, living in less than 100 sq feet…I don’t like this trend of thinking..if someone likes to live in a shanty, I won’t stop them, but I see this as another attempt to want the USA citizen to lower living standards and do with less…soon people will be living in hogan’s (hut)….Life like it was in 1875.. progressing backwards…

It’s the standard of living all progressives want for everyone on the planet. We Americans just need to learn our place and accept that we are no better then everyone else. (now time for me to wash my mouth out with soap, sorry for spouting such garbage)

Actually, we could probably benefit from a decrease in housing regulation so we could go back to simpler housing, we need a cheaper solution. but a dumpster is probably too far.

Reminds me of the Chinese egg house that was circulating a while ago. Although honestly I liked the egg house more; at least you could lie down, and it was likely less expensive (although it didn’t have electricity, a toilet, or a place to cook)!

This is one of those stories that gets just a little less funny everytime you read it. When you consider that our so called “leaders” are driving us all to the point financially to where everyone will be living in one of these contrived mobile homes soon….I guess the people living in dumpsters will soon be the new “middle class”, while the rest of us in a slightly lower economic category will be forced to live in those plastic recycling bins, or perhaps a paper sack…..try to keep laughing folks, so you won’t end up crying.

Not to knock on you TX, but this dumpster home was a project created by a guy who does still stuff for a living (refurbishing and repairing). He’s done similar things with shipping containers in the past. And the dumpster he‘s in isn’t cheap: it’ll have (or has) hardwood floors, granite countertops, and a flat-screen TV. It’s junkyard chic, part of an artistic movement known as the “small house movement” which rejects traditional housing concepts for the sake of the small and artistic.

The actual articles about it are more interesting than the video, in my opinion:
