WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — A 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. There are reports of injuries in Washington, D.C., but none serious.
(Related: Watch the quake interrupt the DSK press conference)
(Related: Blaze staffers give first-hand accounts of the incident)
(Related: See The Blaze’s exclusive pictures of damage to the National Cathedral)
It was centered near Louisa, Va., which is northwest of Richmond and south of Washington.
Obama and many of the nation’s leaders were out of town on August vacation when the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. EDT. The shaking was felt on the Martha’s Vineyard golf course as Obama was just starting a round.
This photo was sent to The Blaze by someone in D.C. It shows the aftermath of the quake on a CVS Pharmacy:
Cell phone service was overloaded for a period of time after the quake. There were no reports of infrastructure damage, however.
Flights out of the three major New York area airports were halted, but service has now resumed.
The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. did experience some damage. Additionally, Fox News is getting word that there the Washington Monument may be tilting.
According to eyewitness reports in New York City, the rumblings had an eery similarity to the moments of September 11.
The East Coast gets earthquakes, but usually smaller ones and is less prepared than California or Alaska for shaking.
At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking. Authorities announced it was an earthquake and all flights were put on hold.
At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government’s biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of “Evacuate! Evacuate!”
In New York, the 26-story federal courthouse in lower Manhattan began swaying and hundreds of people were seen leaving the building. Court officers weren’t letting people back in.
The quake came a day after an earthquake in Colorado toppled groceries off shelves and caused minor damage to homes in the southern part of the state and in northern New Mexico. No injuries were reported as aftershocks continued Tuesday.
In Charleston, W.Va., hundreds of workers left the state Capitol building and employees at other downtown office buildings were asked to leave temporarily.
“The whole building shook,” said Jennifer Bundy, a spokeswoman for the state Supreme Court. “You could feel two different shakes. Everybody just kind of came out on their own.”
In Ohio, where office buildings swayed in Columbus and Cincinnati and the press box at the Cleveland Indians’ Progressive Field shook. At least one building near the Statehouse was evacuated in downtown Columbus.
In downtown Baltimore, the quake sent office workers into the streets, where lamp posts swayed slightly as they called family and friends to check in.
Social media site Twitter lit up with reports of the earthquake from people using the site up and down the U.S. eastern seaboard.
“People pouring out of buildings and onto the sidewalks and Into Farragut Park in downtown DC…,” tweeted Republican strategist Kevin Madden.
“did you feel earthquake in ny? It started in richmond va!” tweeted Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group.
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill tweeted that her staff in Washington was in an “emergency location. Hope everyone is ok.”
John Gurlach, air traffic controller at the Morgantown Municipal Airport was in a 40-foot-tall tower when the earth trembled.
“There were two of us looking at each other saying, `What’s that?’” he said, even as a commuter plane was landing. “It was noticeably shaking. It felt like a B-52 unloading.”
Immediately, the phone rang from the nearest airport in Clarksburg, and a computer began spitting out green strips of paper – alerts from other airports in New York and Washington issuing ground stops “due to earthquake.”
This is a breaking story. Updates will be added.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 2:26pmThe earthquakes in diverse places is only a sign to get your attention. Give God your attention and listen for the still small voice. The voice says to repent of your sins and turn to God. The voice tells Christians to begin a ministry of repentance, reaching sinners for God.
Report Post »Even if this is not connected to the End Times (I think it is), we should still use it to get people’s attention and focus it on God.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

As the earth shifts on one side, it will put pressure on the fault lines on the other side of the world. I am waiting for a quake off the Oregon Coast which they predict in the next 50 years. I am afraid it may be sooner. Quakes are a natural event that is inevitable everywhere in the world. I do not think any area is immune. It is just a matter of time. We just hope that the time is not right now. All we can do is pray that people do not get injured. I do not want to say that this is a sign from God as that would mean he is responsible for the damage and injury to his people. Remember, all of us are his people. Yes, even the people that do harm to others. Christ said love your enemies, do not judge. All we can do is give love to others in hope that they will come around to the truth.

Really? Which one in particular? Typical liberal… no facts just meaningless lies. Well, I’ll help yo out with a few:
Psalm 22
6 But I am a worm and not a man.
I am scorned and despised by all!
7 Everyone who sees me mocks me.
They sneer and shake their heads, saying,
8 “Is this the one who relies on the Lord?
Then let the Lord save him!
If the Lord loves him so much,
let the Lord rescue him!”
9 Yet you brought me safely from my mother’s womb
and led me to trust you at my mother’s breast.
10 I was thrust into your arms at my birth.
You have been my God from the moment I was born.
11 Do not stay so far from me,
Report Post »for trouble is near,
and no one else can help me.
12 My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls;
fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!
13 Like lions they open their jaws against me,
roaring and tearing into their prey.
14 My life is poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart is like wax,
melting within me.
15 My strength has dried up like sunbaked clay.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You have laid me in the dust and left me for dead.
16 My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs;
an evil gang closes in on me.
They have pierced my hands and feet.
17 I can count all my bones.
My enemies stare at me and gloat.
18 They divide my garments among themselves

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 3:43pmIsaiah 53
3 He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows[a] that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
5 But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
the sins of us all.
7 He was oppressed and treated harshly,
Report Post »yet he never said a word.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth.
8 Unjustly condemned,
he was led away.[b]
No one cared that he died without descendants,
that his life was cut short in midstream.[c]
But he was struck down
for the rebellion of my people.
9 He had done no wrong
and had never deceived anyone.
But he was buried like a criminal;
he was put in a rich man’s grave.
Want our country back

Good God fearing people live in those areas also. About as much credibility as claiming every storm now is a biproduct of global warming. Storms, earthquackes…. are not new. We have always had them, alway will.
Want to see punishment from God, look to NY. They just allowed gays to marry. That is a punishment from God. When societies/ nations turn away from God, their behavior become ungodly, and it destroys them. Homosexuality destroys nations. It has in the past, and it will destroy ours. Look to the Bible, and see how many times God used an earthquake or storm to punish Israel when they turned wicked (let me know if you find one). He did let Babylon come in and rule over Israel, same with Rome. Their wickedness weakend them, and made them vulnurable. Do you think we are vulnurable to the Chinese? Are we vulnarable to the socialist that take away your rights, money,…..
Stop claiming God’s judgement every time we get a storm. Wickedness is a biproduct of turning from God. Look at our murder rates, abortion rates, suicide rates…..

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 6:40pm@Enicinom and @Beckisnuts,
Reason and science has nothing to do with denying the existence of God. If God exists, and He caused an earthquake, wouldn’t it still look like a regular earthquake to all the scientists and their instruments? Just because science understands the physical chain of events that led to an earthquake doesn’t logically rule out the possibility of a spiritual cause to those physical events.
People who believe in the spiritual claim there was a spiritual cause behind the physical phenomenon, and there is nothing logically fallacious or unreasonable about that point of view. Science is unable to disprove them.
You assume there is no God, just because science can’t find Him. But do not make the mistake of thinking that your conclusion is the result of evidence or that it is the only logical conclusion. It is logically impossible to disprove the existence of a spiritual reality, and so a denial of the spiritual is nothing more than an expression of your personal distaste for it… not a logical conclusion at all.
…and by the way, saying that biblical prophecy was so vague it could be fulfilled by anything only displays your ignorance of the subject. Nostradamus was vague… the prophecies in the old testament were remarkably specific, and not only predicted future events in plain language, but in some cases predicted the very year (or even day) that certain events would take place… and turned out to be right.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 7:09pmRight on the left coast, reason alone can dismiss the supernatural. The work to prove the existence of the supernatural is all on your side anyway. The concept of “god” was created by mankind and it shows. A real god would have corrected men at its first appearance. Instead we have a stupid, and I mean stupid, story that explains why women are intended to be second class people. It is disgusting and laughable. No god would ever condone nonsense like that. Then you have the ridiculous stories about killing children to test loyalty. Please. That is simply barbaric and is also a fine example of how bronze age people behaved. But it doesn’t stop there. The idiocy goes on and on. None of it adds up, and now with science cracking open more and more secrets every day, it has become painfully obvious that the stories of long dead middle eastern peoples that make up religious books like the Bible are myths. I do not need any of it. There’s much more to comment on in response to your posting, because you also attempted to attribute words and conclusions to me that were never said, but enough already. Was it her that raised you to be such an evil little poser? Would she be proud of you now? How does it feel to be paid very little to be so small? Didn‘t you expect more than ’this’ from your life? What does it feel like to meddle maliciously in real people’s lives every day? Is it gratifying to cause anger and hurt? Or are you like an EMT who becomes hardened and numb out of necessity to others pain and makes jokes about it to further insulate you from your death and therefore your life as well? I am truly curious. They pay you to hurt others. Do you feel the damage it does to you? It doesn’t appear to be a very good trade off to me. You don’t seem very sensitive though. You probably don’t even sense the harm you are doing to your own soul. Not good. You do understand that you are a soul, don’t you?

I’ll let you in on a little secret… There are no others… It’s all just you. You know it’s true in a strange kind of way, don’t you BN? It’s illogical but it rings true doesn’t it? That’s because the essence of life is paradox. So when you hurt others… you are really hurting… yourself! Too bad. Life is stranger and far deeper than you suspect and you are in a lot of trouble BN… That’s why there is a God. She inhabits all those strange places that most of us barely perceive or even suspect. She doesn‘t need to be overt because she’s everywhere. Yep, everywhere you can think of, she’s already there. Everywhere you can’t think of too. That’s the worrisome part… :) Ignorance is so profound. Science, rationality, technology, the religion of Liberalism. False gods all. If God exists, and He is the God described in the Bible, then He is always in control, and was still in control at the time of the earthquake. So in a sense, believing in God means you must believe that this earthquake happened on His watch, and with His approval. It was part of His plan, and probably had a purpose behind it.

It rains on the just, and the unjust. Good people get hit by storms, just like the bad. Good peoples houses crumble, just like the bad. Good people get sick, just like the bad. Nothing new. Claiming God sent this earthquake, is about as stupid as idiots claiming “global warming” evertime we get a tornado, huricane, blizzard….. We have always had these storms.
Who am I to say God is punishing anyone for anything. I would be a fool to think every storm, fire, mud slide, earth quake… was a punishment. I am tiny, insignificant, and amount to about as much a a freckle on a flea’s butt.
For us Christians, we should know better. Outside of the flood (followed by a promise that there will not be another), we do not see much punishment this way. Generally wickedness is punishment for turning away from God. I would compare with AIDS. AIDS is not a punishment for homosexuality, Homosexuality is a punishment for turning from God.
Wickedness has a price. Homosexuality has a price Abortion has a price. Look at our murder rates, look at our economy, look at the heathen behaviors going on in many of our public schools.
God does not need a storm, earthquake…. America is destroying it’s self from the inside. Rome did the same, Babylon was having a giant drunken sex party, when the persians slipped in and destroyed them. Same with Greece. History does not repeat, people repeat history. I am sure as a teacher, you know this

Actually, that’s an urban legend. The actual swampland lay nearby the city near the rivers. Also for liqeufaction to take place would depend on the watertable and how saturated the soil was. If it hadn’t been saturated for oh say 200 years, there would be little chance of liquefaction.

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 2:34pm@HUNITHUNIT~~~ We are west of you by about 2 1/2 hours. Didn’t feel a thing here, but we were walking around and standing up. Lived in Central America with quakes almost daily and found that if we were on foot or moving or driving, it was hard to discern them. HOWEVER, 5.8 is a significant quake. I remember seeing the ground roll as though it were ocean waves. Cannot imagine here where folks are not prepared for such. PRAYERS esp. for school kids and hospitals.
GOD IS MARCHING ON, folks. We had two significant quakes in the US today already and a significant hurricane on the way.
I bet that ole Maxine Waters person ordered all this up in all her witchery so she could blame it on us TEA PARTIERS. HA! To you, you old witchy hag. You ain’t seen nothing yet. OUR GOD is p.o.ed with you and your ilk and all your false gods, and HE is on the move.
