‘Economic Terrorism’: Big Companies Targeted for Ties to Christian Groups That Oppose Gay Marriage

Big Companies Targeted Over Ties to Anti Gay Marriage Christian Groups

A logo for the Family Research Council's anti-religious discrimination campaign

For millions of Americans, e-commerce is nothing more than an easy way to purchase needed products. But somehow, the boring and seemingly nonpartisan online shopping world has been strewn into the politically-charge gay rights debate. With angry advocates and bloggers taking on big businesses and non-profit Christian charities, alike, all sides are sparring over divergent views on free speech, religious tolerance and economics.

Here‘s a simple breakdown of what’s been going on: Massive retailers like Apple, Microsoft, Netflix and Wal-Mart have a relationship with an Internet marketer called the Charity Giveback Group (CGBG). When CGBG brings customers to retailers’ web sites, the marketer gets commission for the sales that are made. This, of course, is a common occurrence in the e-commerce world.

But there’s a twist in this breakdown that has gay rights advocates infuriated — a portion of the commission that retailers pay out is donated to the buyers’ charity of choice. On the list of potential recipient options are Christian organizations like the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family – groups that oppose gay marriage. The New York Times has more:

The national battle was ignited in July by Stuart Wilber, a 73-year-old gay man in Seattle. He was astonished, he said, when he learned that people who bought Microsoft products through a Christian-oriented Internet marketer known as Charity Giveback Group, or CGBG, could channel a donation to evangelical organizations that call homosexual behavior a threat to the moral and social fabric.

Wilber, clearly unhappy with the arrangement that these retailers had with the marketer and with the potential that money could change hands between the businesses and groups opposed to gay marriage, took to the Internet. He created a petition on Change.org (a web site that often champions what some see as leftist policies and ideals), urging Microsoft to end its relationship with these “hate groups.” Microsoft, likely fearing the loss of revenue as a result of its connection to the marketer, dropped out of the CGBG program.

This petition, of course, was only the beginning. Apple, the popular tech company, also bailed out on the arrangement as well after another similar petition was launched. So far, nearly 100 companies have left the charity agreement following the launch of these mini-campaigns, with very few of them speaking out about their reasoning.

The responses coming from the marketer and the non-profits involved in the controversy have been strong. Mike Huckabee, a former pastor, governor and candidate for the American presidency (who is also a CGBG consultant) said, “This is economic terrorism. To try to destroy a business because you don’t like some of the customers is, to me, unbelievably un-American.”

While gay rights advocates feel that they are fighting against “hate groups,” conservative Christian organizations feel as though they are being targeted for their religious beliefs. And the marketer feels as though customers are being denied full access to choose donation recipients for themselves.

Big Companies Targeted Over Ties to Anti Gay Marriage Christian Groups

Despite activists’ success in boycotting CGBG, a new, counter-campaign has been launched called, “Christians/Consumers Against Retail Discrimination.” An announcement on the group’s web site reads:

In recent weeks, online political activists have engaged in a misinformation campaign that bullies retailers into discriminating against customers and charities based on their religious beliefs, specifically the traditional and biblical view of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The online activists are targeting CGBG, a charity support group with a mission and partner network that includes more than 170,000 charities representing a range of religious, non-religious, educational and other groups. The online service helps users support their favorite charities by shopping on the web. However, in recent months online activists opposed to a traditional and biblical view of marriage have pressured retailers to end their participation with the charity support group.

Despite pressure to separate from CGBG, companies like Walmart and Sam’s Club have reignited their relationships with the marketer. This, of course, is likely to further infuriate the activists who have worked so hard to hamper the company’s success among major retailers.

Up to 10% may have engaged in gay activity some time in their life for a short period of time per Kinsey.
Most of these don’t continue in a gay lifestyle. The one who stay in that lifestyle are 1% to 3.86%.

The CDC says that they that they need to change the way the spend money to put out the message more effectively or things will get much worse.

As I see it, the CBGB earned their money and made a choice about what to do with THEIR money. They donated to a charity of THEIR choice. I just don’t see how this is related to religion. The only relation is that the choice of charity happened to be a religious one. Once again, gay groups play their “in your face” tactics. We should get a list of those companies who backed out and send them emails, as I will not support companies who will jump when gay groups say frog.

We are leading them into the sin that is destroying the holy covenant of marriage. Everytime we see pictures of their **** marriages and someone says ‘how nice’ they are smiling on sin. My point about the Constitution is that everyone is protected by it — there is no exemption for homosexuals. This isn’t just a symbolic issue. There are real financial and social benefits that come along with marriage. How can you possibly justify making somebody pay higher taxes, for instance, just because they don’t agree with your personal religious views?

Why not! That is what a lot of “Christians” are already doing and have done for years to the Bible. You can make ANY book say whatever you want it to say if you only use “cut and paste” when you read it.

I used to hate Walmart and Sam’s Club, but after reading this, I think I have just changed my mind. I‘ll be looking to get that Sam’s membership after all.

Companies always seen to look for the sqeaky wheel first. Perhaps they should first look at how many people are gay versus the REST of the nation. They become cowards, and it may well backfire. Good for Wal-mart and their other company Sam’s club. Hope other companies figure out more people are NOT gay and we spend more money.

Far too often the only feedback retailers get from customers is negative. We only communicate when we’re unhappy with a product or service. We all need to let them know how much we appreciate their willingness to support efforts we value when we purchase products and service from them so they’ll know that we are the majority, our money is what makes their business possible, and these whiney little minority groups reflect the opinions of a tiny portion of their customer base.

Fantastic point. We do forget to give them credit when credit is due. We should all try harder to remember to do that.

Christians are accused of intolerance all the time, but the gay activists are intolerant of Christians. Odd how liberals only see things their way – no matter how much hate and racism happens on the left, we are accused of it, and the gays and left in general are extremely intolerant of conservatives and theire views, but that is ok since it is them being intolerant

Homosexuality is an obamanation! No to gay marriage! It tells God that we don’t care what he has told us. Read Romans first chapter and see what St. Paul says about this sin. These people are bringing Gods wrath upon us all!

Sorry, but God has no place in the laws of a secular nation. As long as Government bestows additonal rights and privledges through marriage, than you can not make a religius arguement to deny these rights to others.

God is in the face of secular laws and ungodly government. You can’t keep God, the creator of the universe, out of a government building. You should wake up and repent for your sins and pray that you escape the wrath of the evil doers when his judgment comes down on America for allowing homosexuals to marry. Romans Ch. 1 discusses homosexuals. Also, the sin of finding pleasure in others sins is the greatest of them all. Check yourself before your wreck your soul in hell fire.

We are a SECULAR NATION. Are laws are not based on the 2000 year old writings of desert nomads.Religious arguments have no place in the law or as justification for laws. The law provides certain rights a privledges to married couples, not to extend this to gays is a violation of equal protection.

So the outcome of all of this new, “legal” inclusiveness to gays is that they can now accuse Christian groups of being discriminatory, hate groups ? Law suits bound to follow. Just love the legal messes that the Left is bringing our way. And then there is this wonderful new world of “ medical” marijuana ! More law suits to follow. Well, we know that many Lefties are lawyers ! Bottom line : Ca-ching.

These are private businesses. When government dictates who they can and can not represent, how is that different than Mother Russia’s business policies? The USA was founded on freedom and clearly states what the FEDERAL government can NOT do! If they don’t like it then shop somewhere else. We all have EQUAL freedom to succeed and fail. Equal “rights” are just Marxist to the core.

The Government is not invovled in this matter, it is a group of citizens, concerned that Corporations were making donations to groups that seek to remove rights from a class of individuals. These citizens are letting corporations know that if they support small minded, bigoted organizations then they will lose customers. Nor is it Marxist to say we all have the same sames to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness and no one group should impose their values to limit the rights of others.
