‘Educate, Inspire & Activate’: Midwestern Tea Partiers Gather for Major Political Convention (Updated With Beck’s Speech)

It’s a big weekend for the Tea Party, as members are convening in Schaumburg, Illinois, for a major political convention. The event, called TeaCon 2011, is intended to mobilize small government enthusiasts just in time for the 2012 presidential campaign.

The Schaumburg Renaissance Hotel is hosting the influential gathering, which was organized by WIND 560AM, a local talk ratio station. The political festivities kicked off on Friday night and are scheduled to continue throughout Saturday evening. In sum, an expected 1,000 attendees have likely turned out. Organizers describe the gathering as follows:
…a unique event that will seek to educate, inspire, and activate. We’re calling it TeaCon2011, and we’ll be partnering with Tea Party groups from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri to equip and motivate activists and voters for the upcoming election season.

Of course, not everyone is happy about TeaCon 2011. Apparently, some protesters came out to stand against the conference, with participants holding signed that read “Save Social Security,” among other related messages:
It is possible that these individuals were associated with The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. On Friday, Progress Illinois promoted a rally that this group was purportedly organizing in an effort to counter the TeaCon conference:
Advocates for social security, Medicare and Medicaid will rally this weekend at the Tea Party’s annual conference in Schaumburg, where several Republican candidates are expected to turn out. The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare is spearheading the rally that will take place this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center and Hotel.
Results from a convention presidential straw poll will be released Saturday evening.

I know Glenn Beck’s sponsors keep this site alive, but they need to stop being so aggressive. He doesn’t want to lose his target audience to Adventure Time on TV, now does he? At least Cartoon Network’s commercials peddle cool toys and yummy, sweet goodies.

I’ve never said ALL union members were thugs. I have used the term “union thugs” where it was warranted. There have been plenty of proven occurances where union members intentionally violated laws, vandalized property, physically attacked another person, attempted to shake down private business owners, robbed union member retirement plans etc. And I’ve also used the term “thug” regarding non-union people who do the same things. If the behaviour fits, the term applies.
I’ve also used the terms Liberal, Progressive etc in referencing groups of people in an all encompassing negative way. No different than your (and numerous other posters ) negative comments regarding the entire Tea Party or Conservatives or Republicans.
I do admit that sometimes my replies are a bit condescending – but they are in response to condescending and stupid “so there” posts. And you make many of those.
Perhaps you should do your own research.

But I can give you some free advise – My Dad always told me to study hard, get a good education and go out and start a Business. The American Dream is still alive – The problem is that most foreigners coming to America are the only one’s taking advantage of it today. Everyone one seems to want something for nothing.
In fact this week I ran into a future Millionaire – He doesn’t speak English very well, he doesn’t understand how Wall Street works and he lives in a closet in the same place he works. He saves every penny he makes and he told me that he plans on buying into the business where he presently works in two years.
My guess is that this Business probably turns a profit of $300,000 to $400,000 a year and he is going to buy into it in two years and pay it off in 10. 12 years to Millionaire.
Also most foreigners are laughing at us on the inside , they can’t believe that some people in America want to tear down the American Dream just because they are too lazy to chase it, or they want to destroy it for personal wreath (Soros, Buffet) or they want something like Free Heath Care, Legalized Pot, Welfare for those that can work but won’t.

The all-encompassing thing is just wrong. I don’t believe you have the exact carbon copy priorities or levels of belief of any given issue as every other conservative. Same goes for liberals, for instance, I am a social liberal, fiscal conservative(NOT Cantor’s ideology-more like Reagan), I don’t leave hug marks in trees, I shoot my rifle at deer in November and think conceal carry is ok as long as the owner is licensed and gets the final ok from local law enforcement, I’m a union member and I deserve every penny I earn, and I strongly believe that American consumers are the REAL job creators.

I decided to attend and was truly impressed by the enthusiasm of this crowd. I had to leave before Herman Cain spoke, but I hope to see a replay of his speech. They are becoming much more organized. Although I do not agree with all of their politics, I enjoyed most of the speakers.

Ever since I recieved my 1st paycheck 25 yrs ago, I have always known that the money taken out for FICA was paying for the already retired workers and not a savings or investment plan for my retirement. I started a 401k for that. The statements we get with the predictions of what our SS checks are going to be is based on income, not FICA deducted from our checks.
Having said that, I put bernbart’s sarcasm under the same category as the “keep your government hands off my medicare” sign. Just dumb.

DEM = democrat
REP = republican
DNC = democratic national convention
RNC = republican national convention
Although these are not really abbreviations, let’s take a look at them just for fun….
DEM = democRAT
REP = republ ICAN (separated that so I didn’t confuse you – the type face on this forum shows the lowercase L the same way as the uppercase i)
There are many more commonly used abbreviations but overtaxing your brain could be dangerous so we won’t get into those yet.

You’ll see that over the last 20 years Dems have accepted $1.2 Billion and Reps have accepted $0.75 Billion. The top 10 donors gave 312 Million to Dems and only 51 Million to Reps. That means they outspent Republicans 6:1.
The Koch brothers don’t even show up until #82 on the list, and they’ve contributed millions to Democrats, too.
How’s it feel to be a shill for the Party of Corporations? I’m just asking.
As to the Tea Party, most of us aren’t Republicans. Most of us have been disgusted with the Progressives in the party for years, and many vote Libertarian or Constitution Party when we can. We usually only vote Republican when the only choice is a Liberal Democrat. I say “Liberal”, because if I could find a Conservative Democrat, I’d for him.
No, we’re simply using the existing mechanism of the Republican Party to exercise our political will. We’re flushing the flotsam out of the party, and that why most Republicans dislike us as much as the Liberal Progressives.
Call us names all you like, it makes you sound foolish and childish.
