Education Secretary Arne Duncan Slams Texas School System for No Apparent Reason

Arne Duncan Rick Perry Texas School SystemWhy is Secretary of Education Arne Duncan down on the Texas school system, and more pointedly, Rick Perry — especially when Texas students reportedly scored right around the national averages in reading and math on the National Assessment of Educational Progress? That is the question being asked by Time’s Andrew Rotherman.

Time also points out that an August report released by the group that administers the ACT college-admissions exam, reveals Texas high school graduates barely trail the national averages for college readiness.

It is for this reason Time‘s Rotherman found Duncan’s revelation on Bloomberg Television that the Texas school system “has really struggled” under Rick Perry, to be particularly odd. During the interview Duncan stated that “far too few of their [Texas'] high school graduates are actually prepared to go on to college,“ and added that he feels ”very, very badly for the children” in Texas.

Really?

That’s when Rotherman decided to probe Duncan, who, ironically, is the former head of the Chicago school system.

“Texas has challenges. The record speaks for itself. Lots of other states have challenges too. But there is a lot of hard work that needs to be done in Texas and a lot of children who need a chance to get a great education” Duncan stated.

But what record? The record that shows students in Texas perform better than those in Illinois?  Time pointed out to Duncan that NAEP revealed Texas’ fourth- and eighth-graders greatly outperformed their peers in Chicago in reading and math.

“I would have to look at all the details, but there are real challenges in Texas. And like every other state, they should be addressed openly and honestly as in Illinois, as in Chicago, and everywhere else” was Duncan’s only reply. Time adds:

True, the national averages aren’t great, but Texas is right there with the pack. So why is Duncan dissing the Lone Star State? Its minority students outperform minority students in Chicago, albeit by smaller margins. And with a high school graduation rate of about 73%, Texas may be slightly below the national average, but it’s doing a lot better than Chicago, which only graduates about 56% of its students.

But the bottom line is that although schools in Texas are no great shakes, they‘re hardly the nation’s worst.

The timing of Duncan’s unsubstantiated accusation seems a bit too convenient. Perhaps administration officals are putting 2012 political aspirations before the truth where it comes to our nation’s students.

It is all about the 2012 election, it didn’t matter before Perry got in the race that Texas is ranked 40th out of the 50 states in High School graduation rates. So yes it is definitely very hypocritical of the Obama administration and you know the President ordered this attack.

I am far from a Rick Perry fan but it is Obama who must be defeated. Hopefully Mitt Romney becomes the nominee as he is the most electable and really the only adult in the room out of everyone running.

Down here on the Texas/Mexico border the schools are fantastic. The problem is that thousands of Mexican children cross the border daily to attend Texas schools. This is due to the fact that the schools here don’t really screen the kids to make sure they are Texas residents. So we are having to pay taxes for the education of many thousands of Mexican citizens, many of whom can’t speak or understand English correctly. The problem isn’t with Rick Perry, it’s with school administrators and their “don’t ask, don’t tell” enrollment policies of Mexican nationals.

The liberals did this in the past, and make the blacks bold, because they believed the whites should actually bend over and take it, the blacks attacked and murdered whites in the 60′s, just like they did in the last few weeks in the UK.

That sounds about right to me, @Momsense. Drop these indoctrinating classes: Sociology for the racist agenda, Humanities for the Marxist agenda, Psychology for the (criminal is the victim) agenda, revised American History for the (regressive) Progressive agenda. Then teach both creationism and evolution theories allowing the child to choose for himself and you have an angry Liberal educator.
Teach real American and world history and psychology with no agenda and Economics and you’ll raise Conservatives and Libertarians.
The Liberals altered true history, dropped economics and are trying to drop American history in a lot of schools. Sociology’s only purpose seems to be indoctrinating kids into believing that wealthy are evil, the white are privileged, and that the poor, the colored and women are victims of society and are therefore owed something for the suffering that happened in the past.

When I was younger, I loaded trucks. A black man from Egypt tried to sue the company. A lawyer called and asked me, “Did they make John Smith use the back door?”
I said, “Yes, but they made all truck loaders and warehouse personnel use the backdoor.” He hung up on me; I guess that’s not what he wanted to hear.
My point? What company would want to hire blacks if they keep trying to sue for false racist claims? The laws mandating minorities have extra privileges are working against them. Companies will seek to avoid being sued of course. Unintended consequences

He spoke fluent Spanish, but said his elementary kids seldom stayed long enough to learn their names. He was responsible for putting hundreds of kids on the proper buses each afternoon and said the list was never the same 2 days in a row. By Christmas vacation, he was counting the days till the school year was over and praying somehow, one of his students who did stay a short time would actually learn something from his classes. Ever notice how much better educated on average Home Schoolers and kids from faith based private schools are. and the amount spent on them would be a mathmatical error that‘s overlooked it’s so small, to the average public school!
I took my kids out of the public school more interested in “socializing” them and put them in a small faith based school for jr high. It didn’t have high school the yr my daughter would have been in so she went back to public school. All the guidance counselor could say was, “For her it worked very well.” She went in with testing, (so did her brother) they went from failing to testing out at the top of their classes. When she was interested in attending DeVry Institute I asked the recruiter if it hurt her chances, his reply,” Actually, we‘d rather have faith based or home schooled students because we don’t have to spend the time getting them up to our standards. They’re much better educated because their taught how to learn instead of just memorizing stuff!

Using federal departments to either go around congress with new regulations or push a radical progressive agenda is nothing new with this adminstration. Just as creating propaganda outlets and devices with taxpayer money.

Any state which has a high spanish speaking population will have a drag on scores and graduation rates. If Texas is anything like Nevada, half the student population is hispanic and a large percentage fail to make it all the way through high school. A significant portion of the student body are children of illegal immigrant which is migratory and puts an almost impossible stress on resources. Our Secretary of Education knows this but chooses to be more comcerned about politics then he is about the children.

I live near Dallas, and Texas probably has half it’s population that attends ESL classes. Most of the time the children speak English whereas their parents don’t. I’ve see numerous times a child interpreting at Walmart for their non-English speaking parents. My husband was a cub scout leader, and he had to have an interpreter for some of the parents. They give awards to schools who have a high minority count and still have a good performance record.

This lame brain does realize that he is criticizing PUBLIC school systems and making the case for vouchers, waivers, and privatization, er, right?

That’s the problem with lying – you always get caught.

In Garland, TX we have choice of school. If the parent wants to transport, the child can go to any school in the Garland School District. The bus will only transport if you’re more than 2 miles from your neighborhood school. They do seem to put the gifted and magnet schools in the worst neighborhoods, though.

Just another obama wh@re. When elected I’m hoping he does away with that wasteful, worthless department and let the responsibility rest on the shoulders of the states where it belongs.

This administration wants everyone in school so they can dumb you down to their thinking. Schools and the government are the problem. Why do people even need to go to school if they are sending all the jobs elsewhere. What will you do after they have dumbed you down with no place to go, work for the government and be humble to the king. And why do we need a department of education, looking to cut the budget? Worthless branch of government.

That there is only one other comment here as I write this shows just how everyday these atrocities on us by a sick administration have become. There should be outrage that a government official should be involved in such a political adventure. In another time we might have been calling for his ouster; now we have become so numbed on a daily basis by this corrupt administration that we don’t even see a story as this as a story; sadly, it’s simply the way government works.

All part of the progressive playbook, create so much BS that people eventually don’t pay attention any more so they can slip their agenda in while we were focused on something else entirely, AKA Obamacare, the FAILED stimulus, the bank bailouts, the auto bailouts, the list goes on and on of bills and programs passed or signed into law behind closed door in the middle of the night. I sure do hope these very same people that this regime counts on not paying attention will wake up in time for the 2012 election, we need “all hands on deck” to make this regime one term only.

or when Press Secretary Jay Carney claimed that unemployment checks create jobs –

where does he finds these bozos???
