Earthquake Rattles…Indiana

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Indiana. Yes, you read that right. The quake, originally reported as a 4.2, has not caused any injuries or damages.

The US Geological Society gives the details:

Earthquake Rattles...Indiana

CNN:

The quake struck just before 8 a.m. ET and was three miles deep, according to the USGS.

The epicenter was located about 15 miles east-southeast of Kokomo, 15 miles west-southwest from Marion and 50 miles north of Indianapolis.

There were no reports of damage in Indianapolis, but closer to the epicenter residents reported being rattled.

“Funny, I thought one of my kids ran into a wall, and lo and behold, it was just a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in Indiana,” one person wrote on Twitter.

The Daily Herald:

Some people in the Chicago area said they felt shaking from the earthquake, though it’s unclear if a 4.2 magnitude quake in Central Indiana could be felt as far west as Cook County.

In comparison, a 7.0 earthquake that was registered in Haiti in January of 2010 is 100 times stronger than the quake felt in Indiana this morning, officials from the U.S. Geological Society said.

This isn’t the first quake felt in the Midwest in the past year. A 3.8-magnitude quake shook the [Chicago] suburbs for seven seconds just before dawn on Feb. 10.

The earthquake’s epicenter was about three miles beneath a farm field a short distance south of Pingree Grove, near Route 20 and Switzer Road in western Kane County.

Why and how did you make the leap from an Indiana earthquake to Alex Jones? Sounds like you have some axe to grind or outward hatred which just needed released……..I get it…Like an earthquake!

My first earthquake experience was in Utah about 10 years ago. I don’t remember what the magnitude was (we were there for about a week), but we had to repair holes in corners & around doors that I could almost walk through. Didn’t care for it much. Glad I’m back in tornado land (unfortunately Illinois).

This quake happened just east of my families childhood hometown of Center.

A little trivia, the quake happened almost exactly half way between Cincinnati and Chicago.

That is how Center got its name.

Yes, and there was an EQ outside of Portland Oregond this early AM as well.
Keep your eyes on what is going on over at the USGS..
    The Pacific Plate is primed.
There is a huge potential for a Mega thrust event (9+) to occur in/around the
    Casscadia Subduction Zone..
There is/has been little to no plate pressure releif in the way of siemic activity..all of it has
    been around all other points…
Anybody care hazard a guess as to what happens when all the pressure is placed at one point,
becasue pressure/shifting is occuring at other points?…. Guess…anybody?
    I gave big hint..above…

This could be a Trigger Event…causing a chain reaction down the west coast…“String Event”.

True enough we are over due for another ‘big one’ on the west coast, however there is no conformation of a looming event. Mt St Helens is still inactive, there is no increase in the bulge on the flanks of the southern third sisters. no increase in hot spring activity. These small sub 5.0 quakes occur weekly here. Both on land and off shore.

If you vies a map of the pacific northwest, you can see how the Columbia river turns north before heading west again to the sea. There is plate movement out here in two directions. The subduction west to east and plate movement south to north. The tension you suggest is occurring on the pacific plate is being mitigated by the movement south to north. With these two factors in play a coming EQ event will most likely be in the 6.0 to 7.0 range. We won’t be falling into the sea anytime soon, rather Astoria will just keep creeping north.

      Anoregonian,

Remember, Mt. St. Helens is not the only volacano in Washington. We have Mt.St. Helens of course, then Mt Baker, Glacier peak, Mt. Rainer and Mt. Adams.

Of course you have 16 in Oregon. So earth quakes are only one problem. Imagine if a few of those volcanos woke up.

Fasten your seatbelts earth people, 2011 is going to be a bumpy ride. As this is being written, global warmers are now trying to figure out how to link earthquakes occurring in unusual places to “climate change.” I can hear the news reports now, “ The earth’s crust is heating up and expanding rapidly in some places and in others it’s contracting because of the cold. Therefore, more and greater magnitude earthquakes are occurring.” Yeeeaah….. That’s the ticket. And our only hope is to pass legislation to redistribute wealth.

      @Fletch

I have heard a series of small quakes have started in the area again; sounds like the fault line may be firing up again for the big ones in the area. If I remember correctly, it was three massive ones that wiped out towns and rerounted the mississippi river for a large area.
