Egypt Agrees to Let Iranian Ships Through Suez Canal

CAIRO (AP) — State media say Egypt has agreed to let two Iranian naval vessels transit the Suez Canal, a move that comes despite expressions of concern by Israeli officials.

State-run news agency MENA said Friday that authorities approved a request from Iranian diplomats who offered assurances that the two ships won’t have weapons or nuclear or chemical material.

The move had been widely expected and Iranian officials have insisted the request is in line with international regulations. They say the two vessels are headed to Syria for training.

    Some of these comments strike me as a bit hysterical. It appears that Iran intends to send a frigate (small destroyer) and a supply ship into the Med, bound allegedly for Syria. They are entitled to do that under international law. When they arrive in the Med, they will be greeted by much larger and much more capable ships of the US Navy, which will undoubtedly monitor their every move. I am sure we are working with Israel to deal with this in a way that ensures Israel’s safety and encourages the Iranian ships not to do anything stupid. I don‘t think they would even if we weren’t there. I think this is all a stunt to draw media attention away from the rallies in the streets of Tehran against the repressive regime.

      Interesting point of view, but you seem to believe that the world is inhabited by reasonable people. If it were the Iranian’s intent to position a missile frigate (which is NOT a “small destroyer”) within range of the capital of Israel and fire off a nuclear tipped missile with zero notice, there is NOTHING that anyone could do about it, and it would effectively behead the Israeli government, leaving very little in the way of alternatives for the remaining military but nuclear response. This is known as A BAD THING. While we all hope that this is just more posturing by the Iranians, it is also a GOOD thing to be aware of the possible ramifications and be prepared. In our current situation, things would not be good for a loooong time to come if somebody in the islamic world got really stupid right now.

      IMO, you are missing the crux of the story: Why is Egypt now allowing Iranian vessels to transit the Suez Canal? I don’t know what those ships are carrying, but neither Egypt nor Obama care, so stunt or not, the ME has been effectively destabilized.

      Would it be unreasonable for Egypt to inspect the ships? And if Iran has nothing to hide, they shouldn’t object. You’re probably right, why would they be dumb enough to give anybody a reason to sink them — it‘s more practical to sneak ’goodies’ into Syria for a future offense. Shouldn’t somebody be asking for a friendly inspection? I mean, since it‘s all ’peaceful’ motives, right?

    I‘d be concerned they’d park their warships mid canal for the western world to suffer subsequent hardship. It would be next to impossible to get them out. Destroying them would block the canal further.

    or

    Moudge class frigate; Armament:4 x C-802 (or maybe improved C-803) anti-ship missiles, 1 x 76 mm Fajr-27 naval gun, 1 x 40 mm AAA, 2 x 20 mm cannons, 4 × SM-1 SAM, 2 x triple 324 mm torpedoes

    the Moudge is a far more modernized version. Wiki states that there is supposed to be a new one out. perhaps this is it.

    you’ll notice that the Iranians have acquired at least 10 or so long range cruise missles, in the last 5 years they have reached the point where it may be possible for them to have crafted a radiological device.

Thats what will happen when you give crazy countries/leaders enough rope to hang themselves like Egypt is giving Iran.
    If someone makes threats to you saying they are going to kill you and wipe you off the face of the Earth and your next door neighbor invites them over and is allowing them to get closer to you how is that going to make you feel? Put yourself in Israel’s shoes for a minute.

    The other article has it as a Missle Ship and a Re-Supply ship. I’m sure Isreal is more concerned about the “supply” ship than the missle one. ABC you are right Iran does have the right under treaties signed in the 1800‘s that works for the progressives but our own constitution doesn’t count because it was written so long ago that nobody understands it. The Suez (or Panama depending on what TV channel you watch) canal is NOT international waters. It is owned and operated by Egypt. They have right of refusal to any nation.

      Agreed, this is the first step…but the concern about blocking aid to Israel is really moot. In another ‘73 war style scenario, the U.S. flew in all of the aid the IDF needed to turn the tide and defeat Egypt/Syria, et all. The problem is that the current defacto president is on the side of the islamofascists this time. ISRAEL WILL GET NO SUPPORT IN THE NEXT WAR FROM THE U.S.!

      Hillbilly, I’ve no problem with that, as far as it goes. But Israel appears to be protesting that those ships use the Suez Canal, which is supposed to be used like international waters to facilitate free movement of ships that have a right to be in those waters. That is very different than what you are saying, and also what many others are (wrongly) claiming.

      Savior, they didn’t lose their rights of the sea, except in your mind.

      Absolute, it is beyond ridiculous to analogize from US domestic laws specific to child molestors to international laws of the sea ratified by the vast majority of countries in the world. We do not even cite diplomats for speeding, but you want to treat a sovreign nation like a criminal pedophile. Get real.

      Not moral relativism, but the law. 12 miles beyond the shore is international waters and any ship can go there. Who appointed you guys dictator-judges that can overrule that international law that the US has long recognized? And before you get too comfortable claiming that we as a superpower can ignore international law, understand the that Chinese are attempting to rewrite that law to 200 miles so that key Asian shipping lanes are controlled only by the Chinese. What you see as dim-witted moral relativism is actually an important question of maintaining the law and, with it, free trade. I thought conservatives were against random changes in the law and were for free trade, but apparently you guys make it up as you go along. and then you have the audacity to complain that I am the bad guy. Nice try. Try bringing your own facts before you accuse me of something less than rigorous debate. And I won‘t hold my breath you’ll be able to distinguish Iran’s boats in international waters in the Med from our ships passing between North Korea and mainland China or between the ROC and the PRC.

The other nations are too afraid of increasing the unrest in the region…..if a Western nation acts to stop the Iranian ships, the protesters in all of those countries will completely go nuts…..Israel will have to monitor those ships themselves…..just like they had to during the “Freedom Flotilla” going into Gaza last year……the Iranians won’t be upset at losing two warships if it ignites the Arab/Muslim world into an all-out Jihad against Israel…….I’m sure that Miss Hillary is looking thru the pages of our “Smart Power” foreign policy handbook right now……doesn’t that make you feel better???

      No chance of them being stopped unless they are proved to be carrying WMD of some type to Syria for a future operation (such as smuggling a nuke into Tel Aviv). Not going to happen, so we can assume that either these ships are being positioned for an attack in the very near future, or they are carrying some sort of weaponry for the Syrians to use in a future attack.

I fear for the Iranians if they think being in International waters will save them because the brave men and women aboard the USS Liberty were in International waters as well.       @techengineer. your uss liberty incident was in 1967 (almost 45 years ago) during the 6 day war when Israel was attacked by multiple nations. It was an intelligence gathering ship of WW2 era that was in the area of the battle theater. The ship had been ordered to approach no closer than 100 nautical miles, but the USS Liberty was listening for reports on an incorrect channel and did not get the message. Due to a variety of mistakes and misunderstandings, the ship was mistaken for a combat seacraft and was attacked. The ship also at one point fired upon Israeli craft that approached in a case of mistaken identity. This is what is called the “fog of war” where in life and death situations, decisions have to be made quickly and sometimes without every fact being known. To call this a terrorist incident is either ignorance or a deliberate refusal to acknowledge the facts of the incident. I suspect that both have a role in your meaningless rant.

The bulk of the choir had went back home after the tour ended while a small group stayed for a few weeks longer. The week after most of us left the town some of our college friends were staying in was shelled from palestinian held land. You would love for us to believe that it is ALL Isreal but I don’t here Isrealites calling for the total destruction of Egypt, Palestine, Iran, etc. I have only heard that coming from the other side.

      USS liberty was a false flag operation between the POTUS (Johnson) and the Israeli air force to attack the USS Liberty at the outset of the 6 day war. It would publicly be blamed on Egypt thus giving cause for the USA to enter the war on the side of Israel. However, the war only lasted 6 days and the USA never entered obviously. There are several documented false flag operations that the US has been shown to be involved in, however, I believe it is safe to say that most every nation on Earth has also utilized this type of “false flag” deception on many occasions. It is pretty well accepted that the above scenario is accurate.

Is there a possibility that a frigate and a supply ship were to be sunk in the Suez Canal that the canal would be blocked for quite a while or at least long enough to accomplish a “watch the other hand” mission? Is there another possibility that 2 ships that quietly dispersed radioactive material, biological or chemical agents during the passage could disrupt the functioning of the canal for quite a long time? Third, what effect would it have on the canal if the ships were manned with suicide bombers in naval uniforms and they just BLEW THE HELL UP destroying a section of the canal? Yea, sure, let’em rip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      watchtheotherhand: You keep referring to this event as a false flag. It seems like you are amost justifying it or marginalizing it? I believe about 40 American sailors died and some 200 were seriously injured.

      In my opinion if what you are saying is correct and it was not just an outright terrorist attack by Israel then we are in even graver danger!! Basically what you are saying is that the President of the US played a part in the Murder of US Sailors and since it has recently come to knowledge that Lyndon Johnson’s mother was Jewish then we have opened a whole new can of worms!

      I wonder how the family and relatives of the slain sailors feel about this eventhough as you say it is so commonly accepted?

      Hey, maybe this is why at Nuremberg the prosecutors allowed the Germans to be tried for the Katyn massacre eventhough they knew the Soviets were behind the slaughter? Eisenhower? Was he Jewish too? lol The things that make you go hmmmmm.

      Israel or the descendants of both Judah and Israel are all God’s people. God will not allow anything to occur he has not already planned. Israel can hold their own. 

      This is a move by Iran to get Israel to attack them so Iran has justification for the world to see before they counter attack Israel….

      Ask yourself why hasn’t Iran already attacked Israel? This is just a temptation to Israel and a subtle relations tester with Egypt… 

      Before Iran and Israel go to war you will see  Lebanon and Syria think a dirty thought and attack or fight Israel in which Damascus will be wiped from the face if the Earth. Iran will then attack and the whole thing pops off. 

      Again, Israel will be quite fine. God’s planned it all out.  We need to get our own house in order before we can do anything about someone else’s house.

      @ Techengineer…………The attack on the USS Liberty was a different circumstance than now exists. The ship was an electronic spy ship and Israel was preparing to be attacked by Egypt. This was the eve of the Six Day War and the two countries had not yet signed the peace treaty. The Israelis took out the Liberty to keep it from relaying their plans and intentions to our other “ally” in the area, Egypt. At the time, Israel was threatened by Syria, Egypt and Lebanon and was preparing to fight for their very survival.

      There will probably be an “incident” in the Med involving the Iranian ships and it may escalate into war. I do not think that Israel will start it, but with their determination they will most likely be the ones to finish it. I have lived in a predominately Jewish community and worked for several Jews in my lifetime. I have found them to be generous and loyal friends, but very dangerous when backed into a corner. If the government of Iran starts a conflict with Israel, they may not survive it. But I can assure you that Israel will still be there when the smoke clears!

(You would’t deny that would you?)You know I very seldom watch tv to watch but instead I’m usually monitoring what the enemy is feeding us.. Last night I was watching 3 shows at once and the theme in each was “The Marriage Institution is **** and it has completely Failed; The Woman must be Liberated..” To the casual watcher that probably means nothing but people who know how the Marxist operate and what their long range plans are it is most frightening. When’s the last time Spielberg or Weinstien made a movie honoring and encouraging family or faith? lol

      As far as the Iranian/Israel conflict there is no denying that Israel has received some 100s of billions of US aid since its inception and what they have not been given by the US they have stolen so their is no question whether or not they could take out Iran.. The question is will Iran, Turkey, Libya, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, take out Israel? While many believe the Bible suggests they will be spared total destruction I personally wouldn’t want to take those odds.

      BTW, I’m rather curious.. How many Jews have ever worked for you? They must really be chosen to always have access to that capital you know? Or they are just smart, industrious and all together superior to us gentiles? lol Yeh, I watch the financial channels daily and about all I see on there are millionair and billionair Jews. Sort of makes me say hmmmm. Wish I was chosen.
