Egypt to Ease Gaza Blockade & Permanently Open Border Crossing

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt will open its only crossing with the Gaza Strip this weekend, the Cairo military government announced Wednesday, significantly easing a four-year blockade on the Hamas-ruled territory but setting up a potential conflict with Israel.
Egypt’s official Middle East News Agency said the Rafah border crossing would be opened permanently starting Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Fridays and holidays.

Demonstrators wave Palestinian flags during a demonstration in Rafah on Sunday along the border between Egypt and the southern Gaza Strip.
This gives Gaza Palestinians a way to freely enter and exit their territory for the first time since 2007, when Hamas overran the territory, and Israel and Egypt closed the crossings.
Israel’s crossings are more significant, since they handle most cargo. A year ago Israel significantly eased its restrictions on cargo entering Gaza, but it still severely limits entry and exit of Gazans through its northern crossing into Israel.
MENA said the decision to open the Rafah crossing was part of efforts “to end the status of the Palestinian division and achieve national reconciliation.”
The statement said rules in effect before the blockade would be reinstated. At that time, European observers had a role in operating the crossing, and Israel monitored people and cargo to keep out militants and weapons.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Nabil Elaraby told the Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera late last month that the closure of Rafah crossing was about to end, calling the decision to close it “a disgusting matter.”
Gazans have circumvented the blockade by operating hundreds of smuggling tunnels under the 9-mile (15-kilometer) Gaza-Egypt border. The tunnels have been used to bring in all manner of products, as well as people. Israel charges Hamas has used the tunnels to import weapons, including rockets that can reach main population centers in Israel’s center.

“They want the world to think of the Jews as evil, bad, and nasty all the while it is Hamas that is evil, bad, and nasty.”
Sorry dude, Israel bombs civilians with white phosphorous and collectively punishes a whole population for the deeds of a few radicals. Both sides are to blame here.
What would you do if your neighbors on all sides started lobbing **** on your house, smile and wave?

It is obvious by the Palestinians deeds and words that they only want Israel to disappear. I believe they have shot themselves in the foot for the last time with their election of HAMAS. They are so lucky that Israel has not killed them all. I think the Israelis have shown great restraint! Israel is not perfect, but they look perfect compared to HAMAS.

You are mistaken. Israel retaliates when the Islamic terrorists blow up school buses, metro buses, hack up sleeping Jews, etc. Most of those homes destroyed by Israel are destroyed because they are being used by terrorists to launch attacks or hide fm legitimate retaliation.
You have been successfully lied to abt the Jews and Israel. It is the Arab who persecutes the Arab.
If you really care abt the history of it — http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2011/05/arab-apartheid-ben-dror-yemini-must.html
If you don’t want Israel to attack, then leave Israel alone. Just that simple. What don’t you get about that? The Arabs start something then blame Israel when Israel defends itself.
Jesus said that we are to turn the other cheek. His reference was to insults. Archbishop Tutu has the right idea when approached by an angry Afrkaaner who tells the diminutive cleric that he (the big guy) was not going to go in the gutter for no gorilla. To which the Archbishop responds that he will.
Nowhere does the Bible call Israel to roll over and be slaughtered.
If Mexico shelled Brownsville weekly or daily, do you seriously think we would let that go?
It’s the same problem for Israel. Their neighbor shells them and attacks WITHOUT provocation.

Posted on May 26, 2011 at 3:10pm@Rose-Ellen I was raised half Anglican, half Southern Baptist. We were taught to read the Scriptures for ourselves. Sorry you did not have the same opportunity. I hope you are reading and rereading.
In general Protestant terms, those who reject Jesus are already condemned to eternal life without Him. This is the message that the NT puts forth. I cannot recommend trying to find other ways. Other ways are likely to be dark dead ends.
In the Middle East, religion is the CENTER of being. I commend to your reading Mark Gabriel’s book: Islam and Terrorism. The 1st few chapters tell his story of moving fm being a PhD in Islamic Studies at Al Ahzar in Cairo and an imam to rejecting the koran because of its inconsistencies to finding Jesus and following Him. In Islamic countries, there just are not many secularists. Those that are, are usually the ones in power like Al Assad and Saddam. Iran’s leaders are really quite normative for their culture. This is a highly foreign concept for Westerners who think in secular/national identity terms rather than in religious identity terms.
Islam tolerates Jews & Christians as dhimmis — they must submissively pay a hefty tax in order to practice their religions and live in muslim countries. It gives islam the “out” to say we tolerate “the people of the book.” It is duplicitous in the extreme.
I ask you to do some more reading and expand your horizon.

Jihad is also an offensive weapon in the koran and haddith. I am offering you their own interpretation of their koran. I offer you a PhD candidate’s understanding of the Bible. You are more than free to consult other Biblical interpreters to find that what I am giving you is approved of by Protestants and Catholics. I do not stray fm accepted orthodoxy. You can find some who stray far and wide fm a traditional orthodoxy, and they sometimes make for interesting reading. I would, however, offer you that a more orthodox view will lead you well.
No one is calling for a genocide of Arabs…not the Jews, not the Christians, not any sane person. The Arabs are quite capable of destroying their own. The muslim Arabs do seem to have a fetish for killing off or driving out the Christian Arabs though. Arabs have spilled more Arab blood thru history than has the West or Jews. Christian Arabs are a tiny fraction of the Arab population, yet you seem to think they are numerous. Many Arab Christians were driven to the States during the Lebanese Civil War by their muslim counterparts. Today, Arab Christians are being killed in Iraq and Egypt where they are not Arab but Copt, whose ancestors were the original Egyptians of pharaoh’s time. They are just as vulnerable to muslims though.

Posted on May 26, 2011 at 11:19amRose-Ellen, you are seriously mixed-up in your thinking.
“You see them as existentially evil based on your biblical interpretations-that is as racist as you can get and a familiat [sic] narrative to justify genocidal hatred of a people.” This is simply untrue. Reading the Koran and the hadiths leads one to the unfortunate conclusion that a Muslim who dutifully follows the Islamic holy books SHOULD hate Jews and Christians and want to kill them. That is not a racist statement; it is simply a conclusion drawn from Muslims’ OWN HOLY BOOKS. Have you read the Koran? Furthermore, no genocide of Palestinians has occurred, and I challenge you to prove that it has.
“Casting aspersions on Islam is the anti-semitism of the 21st century.” Again, Islam is being attacked on the basis of the contents of its own claimed scriptures, not on falsehoods made up out of whole cloth like anti-Jewish sentiment has always been. Your statement is a complete crock.
“Jesus does not hold it against people if they dont [sic] happen to believe in Him.” Again, this is easily refuted. Read John 3:18, John 14:6, and Mark 16:16. Or do you make your Christianity up the way you want it to be instead of believing what the Bible says?
Seriously, you need to rethink your entire approach to religion and theology. It is based on what the books say, not on what you would like them to say.

You have such an underdeveloped understanding of what islam is and who their prophet was. Islam sets Muhammad up as the ideal man — every muslim is to live a life of emulation of their prophet. I suggest you go to any number of web sites abt islam or even read the historical portion of Yusef Ali’s English translation of the Koran to better understand the inherent bloodthirstiness of islam.
Every Jewish mom would love for her son to be like Moses, Jesus is the ideal man whom Christian are to emulate. HUGE difference between these, don’t ya think?!
Muslims justify their attacks on Jews and Christians because we don’t convert to their religion. THey attack one another over disputes like honoring their Shia saints.
Israel was not expansionist until it was attacked. It pushed the 1948 borders then the 1967 borders to prevent further attacks on its civilians.

Posted on May 25, 2011 at 4:37pmHello Helen Thomas aka Rose-Ellen
Rose-Ellen, you are incorrect in some of your comments as well as being misled in your approach.
You said that Arabs were displaced by Jews coming to Israel fm the Holocaust. Not so. Check your facts. Arabs sold property to Jews and left with the intent of having their cake and eating it, too. The plan was for the Jews to buy property then be killed off by Arab armies coming in fm Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and every other Arab nation. That way, the so-called displaced Arabs would reap a financial reward twice.
Another point you are missing is that while Arabs left of their own accord, Sephardic Jews fm Arab countries did not. Rather, these Jews were thrown out by Arab gov’ts w/little more than the clothes on their backs. Their belongings and bank accounts were retained by Arab gov’ts that did the expulsions. There were more Jews displaced in this than Arabs who left Israel.
As to oppression, Egyptian Yasser Arafat demanded Arab countries NOT allow Arabs fm Jewish lands be settled in any useful manner. Furthermore, he destroyed Lebanon and nearly destroyed Jordan and Tunisia. Wherever he went, he left trails of death and destruction due to his ideology of terrorism and desire for personal power.
The Jews left fruitful greenhouses in Gaza which the Arabs promptly destroyed. So much for an economy. Jews and Israeli Arabs have freedom and the vote. Do Gazans? Egyptians? Who is the real oppressor?

Sorry but I define terrorism as an act designed to create fear and/or loathing in the victim of the act. I have been very specific in my use of the term which does not incl just any Arab. It incl only those who seek to drive the Jews out of their land. I am slurring no one.
If you sell property or abandon it because the Arab armies tell you to, then you lose your rights to it.
There are Arabs living in Israel, completely at peace there. These were the folks who decided not to believe that Arab armies would destroy the Jews in 1948 an onward.
The Jewish state has offered 95% of what the Arabs wanted and still could find no peace w/the militant Islamists. Let’s face facts, Islam is the problem. Christian Arabs may hold a cultural dislike for Jews, but it’s not Christian Arabs creating the mayhem for EVERYONE living in the Levant.
The problem is with Islam that seeks to dominate, destroy, or convert all others. The problem is that Islam believes that once a Muslim has ruled a land, it can never revert to other rule.
The problem is textbook, Koranic Islam.

I was a child when the Cold War ramped up. I recall vividly duck & cover drills. My schools were CD shelters. The threat fm the USSR was REAL, regardless of what they say now. I can understand, while not condoning, killing to keep communists out of power in allied countries. To think otherwise is simplistic and not grounded in the history of the day.
Rather than risk all out nuclear war, both the USA and USSR fought a series of proxy wars and jockeyed for position in the realm of diplomacy. If you’d bother to check, you will find that more people were murdered by leftists than were murdered by our proxies. Witness millions murdered in China, Indochina, Cuba, to name a few. Chunks of Africa were also subjected to mass murder as a result of the USSR’s tinkering.

Posted on May 25, 2011 at 9:18pm@ Rose-Ellen — It is precisely the ancient history that fuels this feud! It began with Abraham and two sons. It makes a really good case for monogamy (**snicker**). As much as Abraham loved God, he tried to compromise on a promise using Hagar. God responded by giving Isaac to Abraham and Sarah. Furthermore, God made the promise of the Land to Isaac’s descendents.
Nevertheless, God DID respond with love for Ishmael and made him a great nation, too. Ishmael was given Arabia and Isaac was given the Levant. Now Ishmael wants it all. How sad for both sons!
Lesson — be satisfied with what the Lord gives and do not covet what does not belong to you.
God is not mocked and will call Ishmael to account for his bad behavior toward Isaac, just as it happened before in Genesis when Ishmael’s wickedness to young Isaac got him removed fm the Promised Land.
Is God unfair, Rose-Ellen? It sounds as if you are saying He is. You may wish to pray and reconsider.

Then the Persians and Greeks invaded the land w/mixed results. Then there were turf wars betw Ptolemy and Seleucid kings w/the Jews caught powerless in the middle. Then came the Romans who barred the Jews fm Jerusalem and their homeland. Like the Cherokee in the mountains, some managed to hide and stay on their land. Then the crazy Arabs came and killed Jews and took over in the name of their god. Still the Jews persisted in the land. Their numbers were also increased in other lands to which they had been cast.
Then Europeans ethnically cleansed them in what we call the Holocaust. Before that, it was pogroms on a fairly consistent basis. The Europeans wanted the Jews to return to their homeland in what we now call Israel. Those Jews who survived European ethnic cleansing decided it was better to be Palestinian Jews than to be dead in Europe. They bought property fm Arabs who were all too happy to sell.
The Jews DISPLACED no one! Jerusalem has been a majority Jewish city since mid-1800s! Arabs left all on their own, betting they would be back when the Arab armies finished what the Nazis started.

You are incorrect abt “choseness [sic] gets expanded to include all humanity though historically he chose the Jews to first reveal Himself to” The expansion is not based on being human, it’s based on faith in the Lordship of Jesus, the Jewish Messiah. The New Testament theology does not say universalism but rather universal acceptance based on our response to God’s act of grace.
Geopolitics are a reality of a fallen world. We were separated one fm the other at Babel. We are called to do our part about reclaiming this world for Him. Nowhere did He go back on declaring the sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as His Chosen People. He merely made a way for us gentiles to join ourselves to the Jews through faith in Jesus Christ.
Only in the West is there a separation betw geopolitics and religion, and that only came thru Martin Luther and later the Enlightenment. The Middle Eastern world that you would change sees no such distinction. Islam is a geopolitical force. It demands your whole life conform to Sharia.
Torah is not just a set of Laws. It’s a way of living life before God.
The New Testament, which is firmly anchored in Torah’s core, is also a way of living life before God.
Secular humanism is a way of living life w/o God, merely using the ethical guidelines of Torah and NT.

If we are building a Kingdom of God on earth and everybody is at the banquet table now, what does it matter if the Jews keep the portion God gave them at the git-go? Why is it so important to you that the Arabs destroy the Jews and take what is not theirs?
All have been invited to the Heavenly Banquet, but few bother to RSVP… Jesus asks that you RSVP, not just expect to show up and eat. Remember the parable He tells of the king who put on a banquet and the invited guests did not show up? Then he sent to the byways for new invitees. One came not dressed for the banquet. What happened to him?
Bottom line: RSVP as directed by God. Show up at the right time in the right uniform of the day (as we’d say in the Navy). All is forgiven, and you can come Home, but you have to make the travel connections correctly. You cannot take the Cleveland to Detroit bus and hope to get to Boise.

Posted on May 25, 2011 at 4:24pm(continued)..”So it is now in this season that even your hidden enemies shall arise and yes, it shall seem as even on ONE DAY that the whole world has forsaken you (5/19/11 ?). But know this, O Israel; they may forsake you but I will never forsake you – they may desert you, but I, the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel will never forsake you…When the veil starts to be lifted from those who profess to be your friends, and your allies start to scatter…so in that moment you shall hear the sounds of war and the sounds of war shall increase. Yes, and in the twinkling of an eye, so shall they unite against you. And you shall say: “We are without help. We shall be driven into the sea.” But I tell you that in that day and in that hour you shall call upon My Name, and I Myself shall sovereignly scatter them. I shall winnow them & I shall make you a terror among the nations. And they shall shake bc of My sovereign hand upon you….And so shall Michael, mighty Prince of Israel, and his mighty angelic warriors join with you and a great victory shall occur. And then there shall be peace for a season until the time of the great end when all nations shall gather against you – from the East and West and the South and the North – at that battle called Armageddon.”

Nowhere does the New Testament say that God has gone back on the Jews being His Chosen People. Rather, Paul makes it quite clear that we gentiles are grafted into the Jewish people.
Nowhere has anyone indicated that we are talking abt the Kingdom of God. In fact, if you want to go there, remember that Jesus says the Kingdom of God is here! It is the Body of Christ. Jesus says His Kingdom is not of this world to Pilate for a very specific reason. You are muddling the passages.

You seriously need to look into a little history. Israel only defends itself from Arab attacks. Matter of fact when Israel took the Sinai they could have kept it seeing that they were once enslaved by the Egyptians and were led back to their homeland of Israel. I can tell you have probably never been there but I can tell you first hand when you cross the border from Egypt to Israel you are going from a third world crap hole (Egypt) into a modern western country (Israel). Interacting with both cultures I found the Arabs to be lazy which is why they live in huts, and the Jewish people to be motivated to get ahead in life. That is why the Arabs hate the Jews because like liberals in America Arabs want something nice but are unwilling to work for it.

So by what logic can anyone say that if they moved back to the 67 borders there would be peace? The Palestinians refuse to admit that Israel has a right to exist. Their chief “spiritual leaders” said last week that “Allah permitted Israel to come into being so that all of the Jews would be concentrated in one place making it easier to wipe all of them off of the face of the earth. Those who don’t come to Israel will be the next objective. Wipe them off the face of the Earth”. Yeah, make peace with this people. The same ones who were dancing in the streets after 9-11 and the same ones who danced in the streets and passed out candy and sweets upon the news of the murder of a Jewish family, including a 6 month old baby who had it’s throat cut. Yeah, make peace with these people, just give them whatever they want. That always works out when dealing with barbaric animals.

And why would Israel want to give them territory that will make it impossible to defend themselves against these nuts? As for the poor starving Palastinians, if they are really so weak from hunger as the media portrays them, where do they find the strength and energy to dance wildly in the streets every time one of their subhuman kind kills another American?

What Gazans lack is freedom. What Gazans lack is a gov’t that is devoted to their well being. What Gazans lack are meaningful jobs that employs their minds and bodies. Over three quarters of Gaza’s population is food insecure or vulnerable to food insecurity, relying heavily on aid subsidies, according to a report by the World Food Programme and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), published in November last year. The report said the population of Gaza was being sustained at “the most basic or minimum humanitarian standard.
Rising unemployment and poverty – 42 percent of Gaza’s workforce was unemployed in the first quarter of 2009 and 70 percent of the families were living on an income of less than one dollar a day per person in May 2008, according to OCHA
Gaza’s population experiences rolling blackouts of up to 12 hours every day. Gaza’s sole power plant, the Gaza Power Plant, is able to produce only half the electricity that it did prior to January 2010, due to a lack of funds to buy the industrial fuel needed to run the plant.
There are often shortages of key supplies and drugs. Delays of up to three months occur on imports of certain types of medical equipment, such as Xâray machines and electronic devices. Clinical staff frequently lack the medical equipment they need while medical devices are often broken, missing spare parts or out of date, the WHO added.
It seems to me that there are key shortages and problems stemming directly to the blockade and Israeli military incursions over the past few years. If it’s changed since Nov. 2010, please let me know; these figures might be dated.
