Egypt Withdraws Ambassador to Israel Over Shootings

Egyptians shout anti-Israeli slogans as they wave national flags during a protest in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo, Egypt, early Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 after an ambush Thursday killed eight Israelis near the border between the two countries. CAIRO (The Blaze/AP) — Egypt said Saturday it would recall its ambassador from Israel to protest the deaths of at least three Egyptian troops killed in a shootout between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants who had launched a deadly attack on Israel from Egyptian soil.

The decision sharply escalated tensions between the neighboring countries, whose 1979 peace treaty is being tested by the fall of Egypt’s longtime autocratic leader, Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt’s interim government accused Israel of violating that treaty and demanded an apology, saying the envoy would be withdrawn until Israel concludes its investigation into the Egyptian security forces’ deaths. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said the Israeli government was holding consultations on the Egyptian move.

The Cabinet, which was appointed by the ruling military council that took over power after Mubarak’s ouster, revised an earlier statement saying the envoy, Yasser Reda, would be summoned for consultation – something that would have signaled a lower-level spat. Israel was likely to see that as a worrisome sign that Egypt’s new leaders would be more responsive to public opinion about the Jewish state, which remains overwhelmingly unpopular because of its conflict with the Palestinians.

Israeli officials insisted the peace treaty was “stable” despite the rocky developments.

“No one had any intention to harm Egyptian security personnel,” Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli Defense Ministry official who works closely with Egypt, told Israel Radio. “The question is what happened in the field and that is what is being investigated.”

The cross-border attack has raised concerns about the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, whose porous borders with both Israel and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip make it an attractive staging ground for Palestinian militant attacks on Israel. Israel says Gaza militants armed with guns, explosives, mortars and an anti-tank missile, killed eight Israelis in a roadside ambush on Thursday after infiltrating Israel through Sinai.

The ambush also has threatened to stoke the Mideast conflict as retaliatory violence between Israel and Gaza militants spiked. Israeli airstrikes killed at least 12 Palestinians, most of them militants, Friday in Gaza, and nine Israelis were wounded by Palestinian rockets fired into southern Israel.

On Saturday, one of those rockets struck three Palestinians who were illegally residing in Israel, injuring two of them seriously, police said.

The Egyptian troops were killed as Israeli soldiers went after suspected Palestinian militants involved in Thursday’s deadly attack.

Israel has offered conflicting accounts about how the Egyptians were killed and the Israeli military has promised an investigation. But the Egyptian Cabinet, in a strongly worded statement, held Israel “politically and legally responsible for this incident,” saying lax security on its side allowed the ambush to take place.

“The Egyptian ambassador to Israel will be withdrawn until we are notified about the results of an investigation by the Israeli authorities,” the Cabinet statement said, demanding an immediate probe.

It said Egypt would take all measures and send reinforcements to protect its borders and “to respond to any Israeli military activity at the Egyptian borders.”

It was the first time in nearly 11 years that Egypt decided to withdraw its ambassador from Israel. The last time was in November 2000 when the Egyptians protested what they called excessive use of violence during the second Palestinian uprising.

The decision to withdraw Reda was announced as thousands of protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy in Cairo for a second day, demanding the expulsion of the Israeli envoy. A Palestinian flag was unfurled at the site, and some of the demonstrators threw firecrackers at the building.

Some protesters removed concrete blocks from the entrance of a side street leading to the embassy while others banged on a metal fence with bars, but no violence was reported.

A dozen armored vehicles were stationed in the area and soldiers formed a cordon in front of the main gates to prevent any protesters from reaching the embassy building.

Mohammed Adel, a leader of the protests that toppled Mubarak, welcomed the Cabinet decision, saying, “It proves to all that the Egyptian revolution is capable of imposing its rules on the Israeli enemy.”

The clamor against Israel also spilled into the political arena.

“Israel and any other (country) must understand that the day our sons get killed without a strong and an appropriate response, is gone and will not come back,” declared Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief and now an Egyptian presidential hopeful. He tweeted his statement along with, “the blood of our martyrs which was spilled while carrying out their duties, will not be shed in vain.”

An Israeli military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations, initially said a suicide bomber, not Israeli soldiers, killed the Egyptian security forces. He said the attacker had fled back across the border into Egypt and detonated his explosives among the Egyptian troops.

Israeli media also reported that some of the sniper fire directed at the Israeli motorists Thursday came from near Egyptian army posts and speculated that the Egyptian troops were killed in the cross fire.

It was not possible to reconcile the different versions.

While relations between the two countries have been chilly since Egypt became the first Arab nation to make peace with Israel in 1979, Israel valued Mubarak as a source of stability with shared interests in containing Iran and its radical Islamic proxies in the region – including the Hamas militant group that rules Gaza.

Egypt’s new leaders have asserted their commitment to the landmark peace treaty with the Jewish state, but Israel fears that the country’s political upheaval will open dangerous new opportunities for Gaza militants to open a new front against it along the Sinai frontier. While keeping up sporadic rocket attacks against Israel, Gaza militants have refrained from large-scale attacks since Israel conducted a punishing three-week war against them 2 1/2 years ago.

Egypt has moved thousands of troops into the Sinai Peninsula as part of a major operation against al-Qaida inspired militants who have been increasingly active since Mubarak’s ouster.

Hamas praised Thursday’s ambush – which was the deadliest for Israel since 2008 – but denied any involvement. Israel accused a Hamas-allied group, the Popular Resistance Committees, of carrying out the ambush.

What were the Egyptian Troops doing with the Palestinian Militants? Is it possible that they were directing the attacks? This is the type of thing that is a prelude to war, where one side who is provoking the trouble gets caught in the crossfire and gets indignant about its injury. This is not going to end well.

A few months ago – I was watching Glenn Beck and he was talking about the crazy notion that the Middle East Extremest would poke, poke and poke at Israeli until they retaliated – then the entire Muslim World and the US would blame Israel for starting it. That is crazy – Glenn you need to get a hold of yourself.

I believe Obama when he says he’s a Christian – A true Bible believing Christian would never turn his back on Israel – that would be like turning your back on God – Glenn you’re way off base with this crazy theory.

      Crazy like a fox!

The Middle East is falling apart at the seams. Less than one month from today the Palestinians will seek UN recognition, and they have asked Obama and US troops to lead a UN troop security force. Hamas today declared all-out war on Israel. Egypt is rapidly degenerating into a hostile force against Israel.

Satan knows that Glenn is there to do something tremendously significant this week, and he is unleashing all his fury to try to stop him. Satan is inspiring his earthly listeners with blood lust and it is only going to become progressively worse.

Within a year, we will see war in the Middle East, $300 crude oil, $10 gasoline, fuel rationing in the US, and if it persists, we will see food shortages and rationing within six months of that war. American farmers depend upon Mid-East oil to till, plant, fertilize, harvest, and transport food to market.

He was of Jewish heritage and hated Jews. Same with Hitler. There are several Jews that were complicate with the Nazis. George Soros being one of them. Well, of course! In the bizarre world of Middle Eastern/Muslim international relations, insurgents should have the Alah-given right to attack the borders of Israel with impunity, but they, the Israelis, have no right to defend their national sovereignty. I wish the Egyptian Ambassador a pleasant trip back to Cairo; however, if I were him, I might consider seeking asylum in a neutral country instead of standing before a Muslim Brotherhood tribunal.

No, standing with GOD (as you put it) is NOT the same thing as standing with Israel. Yes, Israel is hated by the Arabs. Yes, “God” promised he would once again gather the children of Abraham before the last days. NO, Israel is not a little sweetheart state that needs the US to be her hero. Israel and the Jews hate Christianity, HATE Christianity, and they hate Christians. They traffic in sex slave of all ages and all races (except Jewish), and it is illegal for Christians to testify of the Savior in Israel. They spy on the US, they sell secrets to China, and at best see US Christians as “useful idiots” (their words, not mine) Unlike Glenn Beck, I know that the State of Israel can NOT save the Jews. The IDF can NOT save the Jews. Not even the Mossad can save the Jews. ONLY Jesus Christ (the savior of the whole world, including Israel) can save the Jews. And until Israel stops the sex trafficking in white Russian and Ukrainian girls, until Israel strikes down its anti-Proselyting law against Christianity, until Israel officially apologizes and admits the true reason why they KNOWINGLY attacked and destroyed the USS Liberty, I WILL NEVER STAND WITH ISRAEL. And if you are a “good” Chrisitian, YOU WON’T STAND WITH ISRAEL EITHER!

The muslems recently just said it was okay to have sex slaves, to buy and sell men and women that were not of Islam. How sic is that?

You conveniently skip my reference to cursing Israel so I will list it for you. Gen. 12:3. And it says,

” And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee, and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

ANYONE who has ever studied the Bible, and confesses to be a Christian knows we are to support Israel.

The followers of Christ are to protect and support Israel right up till the Rapture.

God will support and hide his chosen people from Satan after the Rapture.

ANYONE, that is except for false prophets and servers of Satan, that hope to deceive people and lead them away from the truth, the light and salvation, knows this.

Pig Pen…I realize that the New Testament Christians don’t believe that we have to stand in support of Israel. But a lot of the postings on here have been correct. There are a lot of evil people with a Jewish heritage like the atheist George Soros. I didn’t realize Karl Marx was also. But in Romans11:25-27 It reads that blindness has happened to Israel until the full # of gentiles have come in., then all of Israel will be saved Then in Zech 12, 13, and 14 it speaks of Jesus pouring out His Spirit of grace and suppication upon the nation of Israel and they will realize that they have pierced their own God and there will be weeping in every house. Israel was Jesus’s first love,it is like a Father with a first born child, we were adopted, but they were of His own blood. He warns us about arrogance and says He can cut us off even more easily than them, and if they do not continue in their unbelief, he can graft them in again..being branches of the True Vine. We are of the wild olive branches. He makes it clear whom He loves first. I believe prophesy says that a remnant..1/3 of them will be saved after all the nations have come against them. I will be obedient to God. I understand His love for them. You have to understand the parent child relationship to understand God’s heart.

‘Egypt said it has succeeded in “stabilizing” the situation in the Gaza Strip in talks with Israel and Hamas, London-based Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat reported Saturday afternoon.

The report follows reports in the newspaper that Egypt had delivered a message to Hamas saying that it was only interested in striking those elements in Gaza responsible for a terror attack near Eilat on Thursday and would cease striking Gaza if rocket fire stops.

Here we go folks. They are starting to ratchet it up. Its all in the master plan to bring down Israel. It won’t be long before the whole middle east is in chaos.
Then we’ll see how important the middle east and oil is to our survival. Get ready for long lines at the gas pump and disruptions in the food supply.

We don’t need Israel & Egypt exchanging blows.

We still have troops in between the two nations as part of the UN peace treaty & the Multi-national Force Observers. Our treaty obligation as part of the UN & MFO is a US Army battalion of over 700 Soldiers stationed there at all times. Another mission we need to get out of …

We don’t need more American Soldiers killed in another crazy conflict.

May God be with you and protect you Glenn. It looks like things are really heating up over there and just want you to watch your back and take care of yourself. I do thank you for your courageous stand you are taking for Israel.

With this “democratic movement” in Egypt that all the liberals were so enthusiastic about, things are going to look pretty grim in Israel. Egypt will continue to allow terrorists to attack Israel, and if Israel responds the Egyptians will scream that it is an unprovoked attack against them. Eventually it will result in a conflict between the radicalized muslim Egypt and Israel if things continue in the direction that they appear to be. Meanwhile the United States under Mr. Obama will continue to condemn Israel for it’s responses to muslim aggression while ignoring or even covering up the actions of the violent muslims.

Stand with Israel, because you believe it is a holy land, stand with Israel because they are a peace loving, docile, democratic and a friend of America.

But if no other reason stand with Israel because our sorry president has broken yet another American standard and stands against Israel.
