Egyptian Couple Arrested For Creating ‘Spouse Swapping’ Facebook Page

An Egyptian couple could be facing jail time for their “spouse-swapping” advertisement on Facebook.
The husband and wife, both 30-years old, claim they got the idea from a Qatari man six months ago. Though extra-marital affairs are illegal in Egypt, the unnamed couple says there has been great interest in their advertisement, with four successful “swaps” already enacted.
Police arrested the couple after undercover agents posed as interested “candidates.” According to Al-Arabiya, after arrangements were made and dates were set for the big swap, police moved in to arrest the suspects.
A controversial prostitution law in Egypt, passed in 1961, allows for the prosecution of extra-marital affairs– even if no money has been exchanged. Investigators are now preparing a case to submit to the public prosecutor’s office, and there is precedent for significant jail time. In 2009, a husband was sentenced to seven years and his wife to three after they admitted to organizing a swingers’ club.
This leads some to ask, should the Egyptian police really be worrying about extra-marital affairs at a time when the government is so unstable? When the Sinai Peninsula is at risk of becoming a “no man’s land”? Or is this just a portent of things to come in post-revolution Egypt?

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 8:16pmOH.. this is in EGYPT where the theists are even STUPIDER and more powerful than they are here!
I saw the headline and at FIRST I thought it was an Egyptian couple who had IMMIGRATED here, THEN been arrested for using Facebook to “spouse swap” in AMERICA…and I was like what?! That doesn’t sound like America…in fact, I’m pretty sure using Facebook for that very activity is one of the favorite PASTIMES of a decent segment of the married populace of the U.S.
“Though extra-marital affairs are illegal in Egypt”
Report Post »Also, it it REALLY an affair if both people KNOW that it’s happening…possibly at the same time in the same room within line of sight, with their consent?? I think that’s a bit abusive of the intent behind the definition of “affair,” but whatever.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 7:06amAmazing – the country is in a shambles, there is no government, and yet the morals police are still doing sting operations? This is a sign that the power and control over these people was not successfully transferred during their revolution. There will have to be more bloodshed over there before they get it right.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 11:26pmHad this not happened in Egypt, one might have thought that the ad had been placed by Mr. and Mrs. Nert G(ett)ingrich. Maybe Nert was one of the first to answer it, though.

Posted on March 26, 2012 at 8:26pmLOL–that’s quaint, but I want to ask, is it REALLY adultery, is it REALLY in keeping with the intent of the definition (which in my opinion and I will argue, has inherent, and necessitates, an element of duplicity and therefore non-consent, due to an intentional deprivation of information, on the part of one of the participants) to call something “adultery” when it is committed by both people, at the same time, possibly in the same room, with mutual knowledge, and without either’s objection (an in fact quite possibly their encouragement), and thus obviously their consent?
To me at least, this seems to be stretching the definition of adultery, and it seems to be missing the moral point–what people desire is to be treated in your interpersonal relationships as ends unto themselves. They want to be valued, and they want that to show in your actions towards them. Those you love and respect, are deserving of your honesty on those grounds alone–it is by your honesty with a person that you demonstrate respect of their capacity for reason and love for them for themselves, for their inalienable humanity. Imagine the treatment you would like from others, imagine the treatment you would like for yourself, the conditions of your life–would anyone who denies equal treatment they imagine for themselves to another person really be said to love or respect them? No. You show respect and love through honesty, not adherence to rules for their own sake.

Posted on March 25, 2012 at 6:11pmI kind of feel sorry for them, because I feel that they really were not hurting anyone in the first place, but themselves if anyone. Maybe they were not really happy in their marriage or missing things. Maybe the wanted to adventure in their marriage, something that they did not have or know how to communicate? You would think counseling would be a much better idea than hurting them even more in life??? It’s so sad why in this world people have no heart or care in such a matter! You have people judging them as though they have a right to wear justice on their sleeves, yet have made many mistakes also in their lives with no passion for pity! What would Jesus do? That is my question!
