Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood Now Plans Big Political Role

CAIRO (AP) — The once outlawed Muslim Brotherhood says it will contest half of the seats in Egypt’s parliamentary elections in September, revealing plans to become a major force in the country’s post-revolution politics.

The elections will be the first since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak by a popular uprising in February.

The Brotherhood remained Egypt‘s best organized opposition group despite a campaign by Mubarak’s regime to suppress it. It successfully fielded candidates in previous parliamentary elections as independents.

At a news conference Saturday, the Brotherhood named the leaders of its new Freedom and Justice party.

The party will test to what extent the Brotherhood is willing to moderate its rigid religious discourse to try to win broader political support.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s ousted President Hosni Mubarak would face the death penalty if convicted of ordering the shooting of protesters during the uprisings that brought him down, the country’s new justice minister said Saturday.

Mohammed el-Guindi told the daily Al-Ahram Saturday that Mubarak, his two sons and wife are also facing allegations of corruption, which he said the former president had made the chief “discourse” of his government.

Mubarak, 82, stepped down Feb. 11 after 18 days of sustained protests. He was later placed under arrest after being hospitalized in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh for heart problems. At least 846 protesters were killed during the uprising.

“Certainly, if convicted for the crime of killing protesters, it could result in the death sentence,” said el-Guindi.

He added that the key to the case was whether former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly, also under investigation, would testify that Mubarak had given the order to open fire on the protesters.

“The only one capable of pardoning Mubarak … would be the new president,” said el-Guindi. “If I were the president, I will not pardon him for killing 800 martyrs.”

Egypt will hold new presidential elections in November.

The minister also blamed Mubarak for engendering a culture of corruption in the government and he said the former president’s wealth came from gas exports to Israel, through a company owned by a personal friend, and arms deals.

Suzanne Mubarak, the former first lady, will also be investigated, the minister added, with the first questioning to take place in the next few days at the Sharm el-Sheikh Hospital where the former president is convalescing.

Mubarak’s wife, who was involved in a number of high profile charitable ventures, is suspected of illegally amassing wealth through her non-governmental organizations.

      We said over and over this was the purpose. Groups were sent into Egypt months ahead of time to ‘train’ the groups on Revolution. One article said the training consisted of over 100 hours. These radical revolutionaries have gone to each country and set up these ‘spontaneous’ revolts. Egypt, Libya, and Yemen had bad leaders yes, but those leaders would not let the Islamic terrorists take over so they have to go. That is why they are so determined to kill Gadhaffi but will let Assad stay in Syria. Assad is best friends with Iran. They have to get rid of the leaders who were working (being paid) with America and put the Muslim Brotherhood in place to destroy Israel and America. This is a well worked out plan. Each of these countries said there were ‘foreigners’ who came in and started the revolts and the killing. I am sure soros is funding a lot of this and obama is in place to help it happen. The same groups who are ousting the Arab leaders who are against the MB are the same groups who paid to elect obama. This is simply an Islamic terrorist take over of the Arab world and America is next.

    As one of the 1st people to realize how bad the Muslim Brotherhood is I’m not surprised at all by this news nor am I surprised that Mubarak is getting the Death Penalty. They still can’t get over the Camp David Accords. I hope Egypt doesn’t get screwed over but it may be too late for that. Isreal should be even more worried now.

      You are shocked that an Islamic group in Egypt, like America’s Tea Party in America, wants to exert political influence? It surprises you that follower of Islam want to involve themselves in the government of Egypt?

      Okay, I’m not totally stupid. Beck has said that the Islamic Brotherhood is Evil and wants to take over the world (whatever, everybody is trying to take over the world in that view). And you believe that, just like you believe that the TV show Glee is going to ruin the US because of the show’s theme of tolerance toward others different than you.

      Rather than get your information from a single source, do your research as Glen says. Here’s what the Muslim Brotherhood says of their goals, “We believe that the political reform is the true and natural gateway for all other kinds of reform. We have announced our acceptance of democracy that acknowledges political pluralism, the peaceful rotation of power and the fact that the nation is the source of all powers. As we see it, political reform includes the termination of the state of emergency, restoring public freedoms, including the right to establish political parties, whatever their tendencies may be, and the freedom of the press, freedom of criticism and thought, freedom of peaceful demonstrations, freedom of assembly, etc. It also includes the dismantling of all exceptional courts and the annulment of all exceptional laws, establishing the independence of the judiciary, enabling the judiciary to fully and truly supervise general elections so as to ensure that they authentically express people’s will, removing all obstacles that restrict the functioning of civil society organizations.”

      Read the article if you actually want to some idea about group beyond FOX. It actually says they may be associated with terrorists! But it does explain the history and scope of the group, information which might lead to a more informed opinion on this subject.

      Muslim Brotherhood has bullied their way into control of several countries in a very short period of time. Thats an odd way of excercising democracy, therefore it’s difficult for me to accept that Muslim Brotherhood willing to work with a democracy mindset. Islamic virtues don’t coincide with other kinds of reforms.

      Sacred I challenge you to show me the source of your idea that group’s goal is the “annialation of Israel.” Muslim radicals have said that, but based on what I read, this isn’t this groups stated goal.

      Honestly I don’t think thing the Muslim Brotherhood is some wonderful group. But they are not Qaeda either as far as I can tell. All the US can do is try to establish a relationship with the most moderate groups as events unfold.

      Shia (Iran) =Hezbollah…Iran controls as proxy army…

      We are witnessing the battle of the Caliphate…Return of the Ottoman Empire if you would, the last Caliphate battle. The final woe….

      Iran wasn’t put in place by US, they overthrew us when ousting the Shaw…All others in ME were propped up by US…Iran has slowly encouraged each of these revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia as to weaken US grip. Turkey and Iran have become friends….Saudi got pissed and sent encouragers to Syria to retaliate…

      All the unrest is a people battle to control Islam or the up coming Caliphate…Iran will win only thru Kings topple by own political/terrorist groups MB, Hamas, AlQaeda as these groups despise the kings for being US buddies…

      Libya is nothing more then a French war pushing US to join…But be assured “democracy” will find it’s way there to…

      The interview contrasted with earlier signals from the group. On Feb. 1, Mahmoud Ezzat, a spokesman for the brothers, told CBS News that his organization “will respect the peace treaty with Israel as long as Israel shows real progress on improving the lot of the Palestinians.”

      In the past, Muslim Brotherhood leaders have supported the Palestinian branch of the brotherhood, Hamas, that rejects any negotiations with Israel and pledges to destroy the Jewish state.

      This took a little longer than I thought it would….the holdup must have been that whole “democracy in action” thing, I guess.

      Nice going there, O Team. And I’m sure Israel thanks you, too. Might wanna check in with them on that…. oh wait, right now they’re busy trying to collect wood because the gas pipeline to their COUNTRY was all blowed up and stuff by the nice, democratic people in Egypt.

      Sacred right now the military controls Egypt and they have vowed to honor the peace treaty with Israel, brokered by President Carter. Would you post the link to the Washington Post article? Your quote leaves the article (definite are indefinite), when you post, “political leader of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood…“ Is that ”the political leader“ or ”a political leader” which could be anyone who claims he’s in this group.

      Not trying to split hairs but who is “the” leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. What is his name? Do they have a leader? Or is this a loosly knit group that is leaderless, and one in which any person can claim to represent the entire group.

      Okay, let me just ask this one question. Who is the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. And did he make the remark you quote. And send me the link to the article please.
