Posted on October 29, 2010 at 10:32amMr. Beck and TheBlaze news group:
Report Post »Why don’t we see headlines, young drunk teenagers plow car into tree while texting and talking on cell phones, killing all 6 in the car? When this happens every day in many states why are you starting headlines with “Elderly Woman” when that doesn’t happen every day? This is a very bad policy!

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 1:42pmany one else remember a few years when that old guy plowed through the farmers market in San Fancisco and killed/hurt 13 people?
Bill ORiley had a lady on who was a civil rights activist for the elderly saying that cities need to put up brighter lights and larger signs for their elderly drivers, so these sort of things don’t happen.
Lights and signs don’t make a difference if you for one can hardly see past the end of the hood of the car, or you step on the gas instead of the brakes.
After highschool I worked a summer as part of a stop sign crew for a repaving project in my home city…the only drivers who went right past us and sank into the fresh asphalt were the old drivers who were squinting and looked confused.

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 11:52amI had observed my 84 year old father in law driving somewhat erratically, so the next time he went to town, I asked if I could go (claiming a fake need to purchase something). I was scared to death at the way he drove. I mentioned to the rest of the family how bad his driving was and no one seemed concerned.
When he came home with white paint on his bumper (and we later discovered the sign at the church had been hit by a car) I insisted my husband take away his dad’s car keys. Of course, Dad objected heavily. Needless to say, I volunteered to drive Dad wherever he went. Best decision we could have made.
My advice – OBSERVE your elderly parents as they drive. Make a decision to intervene if their driving isn’t good.m Then take action. Best thing a family can do for the elderly!

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 8:54amI had to take the keys away from my 92 year old Mother and the only way I was able to do it was because of her neighbors. Most are widows in their 80′s and still drive and they make sure she has a ride where ever she goes. And yeah I live in a different state and she refuses to come live with us because is so independent.

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 8:50amJust a few months ago in Red Granite someone smashed into some tavern. I don’t remember it getting so much national attention. Extra Extra Read All About It. Patron places the vehicle in wrong gear and plows into tavern.
Heck I don‘t know how many times I’ve seen or heard about a damaged 7-Eleven store in central Florida. Extra Extra Read All About It. Customer Plows into a Concrete Block Wall.

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 8:20amI work with the elderly I personally think EVERY driver should have to take a road test as well as written test at least every 3 years..maybe more often up to the age 25 and then again at age 65

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 8:35amDon’t worry, there is probably a clause in Obamacare that sets up a panel to determine who will be allowed to drive and who just needs to be put out to pasture.

Posted on October 28, 2010 at 4:04pmWorking with insurance claims, we see this type of accident ROUTINELY so I am one to answer that most insurance companies already require an extra test, but the general reason for this type of accident (not just among the elderly) is distraction or not being familiar with the vehicle that they’re in. They go to step on the peddle and hit the gas, or text, or cell phone use. You are more “drunk” when you text or use your cell phone AND DRIVE than you are in some states by the legal limit.
Be wise and don’t be too proud to surrender your license or you too Might injure, or worse, kill someone.
