Electoral College Model Predicts Romney Will Win Big in 2012 (And It’s Been Right Since 1980)

University of Colorado Professors Ken Bickers and Michael Berry have quite a set of bragging rights up their sleeve – namely, they’ve devised a mathematical model of the Electoral College that has predicted every Presidential race correctly since Ronald Reagan won the Presidency in 1980.

And despite recent polls showing the presidential race deadlocked both nationally and in key swing states, Bickers and Berry‘s model shows a race that isn’t even close. According to them, not only will Mitt Romney win, but he will win big, taking 320 Electoral Votes to President Obama’s 218 – a result almost as decisive as President Obama’s win against Senator John McCain in 2008.

The Huffington Post explains how the model works:

To predict the race’s outcome, the model uses economic indicators from all 50 states and it shows 320 electoral votes for Romney and 218 for Obama, according to The Associated Press. The model also suggests that Romney will win every state currently considered a swing state which includes Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Colorado.[...]

Berry cautions that just because the model has worked in the past, doesn’t mean it will work this time. “As scholars and pundits well know, each election has unique elements that could lead one or more states to behave in ways in a particular election that the model is unable to correctly predict,” Berry said in a statement. Some of those factors include the timeframe of the current economic data used in the study (the data used was taken five months before the November election, but Berry and Bickers plan to update it with more current data come September) as well as tight races. States that are very close to a 50-50 split, the authors warn, can fall in an unexpected direction.

Even given the caveats near the end, this is encouraging news for supporters of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, given that it shows a race where the raw economic data appears to favor a Republican win. Granted, the election is still months away, and given that Berry and Bickers plan to update their model later, this forecast could change.

However, if things stay as they are economically, President Obama could be in for a rout come November.

      And your preferred alternative is ? You have 2 ,count them two real options or your can throw your vote down a whole with Gary Johnston or pine away for a fantasy and not vote for Ron Paul either option is a vote for oblameo. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Conservatives and Libertarians need to build power one congressman at a time the same way socialist took over the democrat party ( to all our detriment ) we need to take over the Republican party .       I agree Romney won’t change a thing and I support Ron Paul but sometimes I also wonder what theblaze will be like and the Rino Fox news will be like in year 2 of a Romney term when they realize nothing has really changed. Will they try and spin it for Romney or will they admit they were wrong? I do honestly believe 8 yrs of rino Romney will do more damage than 4 more years of Obama wrecking things immediately.

      I understand my view is the Atlas Shrugged outcome and I understand many don’t get it or like it.

      I also HOPE that if Romney does win he will do something about the TSA and the massive police state but I doubt it. I think the gop turns into the Graham/McCain gop if Romney wins.

Fiscal responsibility will enter . . budgets will be made, tax reform, improvement to medicare, spending will be cut, keystone pipeline will be approved. – jobs will return. – its basic math. – - Obama wants to keep spending and have the wealthy and remaining middle class (those still with jobs) to pay the bill . . Romney & Ryan want to cut wasteful government spending (including obama’s affordable healthcare act) – and improve business confidence and moral. – -but ya gotta stop it with the anybody but Ron Paul equals doom & gloom. that’s a crock. – Romney will be a HUGE improvement. I trust Romney‘s business sense over Ron paul’s cranky crotchety old man theories any day.

      We have similarities, and differences… ultimately differing opinions about the Romney/Ryan ticket. But let me poise this question… if they turn out to be better than you thought: created fiscal stability, government cuts, lower taxes for business, spurred the economy, lowered the unemployement rate, built a southern wall for illegal immigration, got rid of Obama care, were God fearing men, etc… would you admit you were wrong?

      My guess is that that you wouldn’t. My guess is you would dismiss all of that and find something negative to focus on because he hasn’t accomplished 100% of your liberatarian views. I hope I’m wrong, that you would realize your views of him were a bit extreme. But that might be wishful thinking.

      I however, will tell you that if he goes the way of Obama like you claim he will… I will admit the error of my way, take my lashings and fight on.

      Can all you Romney devotees answer one question? How many debt ceiling raises has John Boehner (a guy very similar to Romney) and the republican House stopped? Just answer me that simple question.

      Romney won’t make significant changes but keep telling yourselves he will. Further keep insulting Ron Paul supporters, it will certainly help you in Nov since we are only like .003% of the GOP base.

      created fiscal stability – this would mean ending or auditing the fed – they won’t touch the fed
      government cuts – ryan makes no actual cuts only decreases in rate of increased spending
      lower taxes for business – I am sure they will find a way to screw this up

      I am not a Romney fan, although maybe he has changed as I used to think like him 5 years ago. I was a total dope thinking government was the answer and now realize, unless it’s limited, it causes all the problems.

      We have TWO very simple choices when voting:

      -Marxist model who HATES America
      -“American” model to benefit FROM America.

      The picks of Jay Sekulow and Paul Ryan are fairly conservative and not typical of a John McCain type President. I have been impressed with Romney defending and standing firm on setting the record straight on truth and lies.

      Now to answer the question of Fox News and the Blaze:
      —A LOT of people are awake and just because they have an (R) in front of their name, doesn’t mean a thing. As per all the Tea party Reps, govs and Senators that were elected into races and positions.

      5 years ago it was all about (R) and (D) for me and now I am awake along with others that ain’t about to be known as the “generation that lost freedom”!! I have a wife and 3 kids… Unfortunately, this is a fight that will NEVER end. Evil never quits, but neither does GOOD! Get up off your butts and talk to people, send emails and blog EVERYWHERE!

      Of course not being discussed is Romney’s support for bills aimed at depriving Americans of their rights and the wars he seems to want to start. Cutting the domestic budget a tiny bit, and starting a war with just Iran, will actually grow the deficit/debt more than what Obama has done.       I’ll answer your question about the debt ceiling this way: For the first time folks up there on Capital Hill are actually battling about raising the debt ceiling instead of just rubber-stamping the thing. Truly, before the last couple years who ever mentioned the darn thing? The hard part has been done: starting the conversation. And folks like Paul share much of the credit.
      Now, as for why Romney would be different: You don‘t pick Paul Ryan to be your VP if you aren’t serious about getting busy. Ryan doesn‘t accept if he thinks Mitt doesn’t mean business.
      And speaking of business, the economy is going to go bananas if Romney wins. Why? Think of it this way: The pipe isn’t rusted and leaking and clogged with ****. It‘s been artificially plugged by the policies of this administration and the water’s been backing up. Pull the plug on Obama and a torrent of economic activity will come gushing out. Corporations holding onto cash; small businesses fearing to expand; citizens fearful to buy. If the headline the first Wednesday of November is “Romney Wins” the economy’s going to let out a collective sigh of relief and let loose. Black Friday will have so many people beating down the doors they’ll change the name of it to Black and Blue Friday.
      Oh. And if Romney/Paul don‘t do what they say there’s an army of TEA Party types that’ll storm Capital Hill and then have an alternate candidate for 2016.

      I am voting Romney.

      Ron Paul is right on auditing the Fed. It would wake up America. the people would be more cognizant of financial issues & it would not go well for Republican big spenders or for Democrat Big Spenders & Taxers.

      Ron Paul is wrong on foreign policy. An isolationist America is an America without allies such as NATO & it would have been an America subjugated by the Soviet Union.

      If having allies get us involved where we should not be, then why in the heck hid the Soviet Union spend so much time subverting out allies (Bader-Meinhof gang), trying to leave our allies defenseless (anti nuke movement against the Pershing Missile & neutron bomb when the Soviets had the SS20).
      Because when push come to shove & you don’t have enough allies, you are thru.

      Remember John Kerry who once served in Vietnam for 4 months was part of the Nuclear Freeze movement. Did that drek ever protest against the SS-20?

      Ron Paul is NOT an isolationist. North Korea is an Isolationist country. RP wants us to stop fighting these absurd, unconstitutional wars that are killing our men and women and costing us a ton of money; he wants to bring our military home and strengthen our defense here at home (like it should be). Border defense is a job for the military, not the job of the unconstitutional DHS, which is one horrible thing GW gave us. Not only that but it’s not even needed. We have the military for border security and dealing with terrorists outside the U.S., U.S. Marshals and the FBI dealing with domestic threats.

      There’s nothing wrong with having allies. Btw.

      Well according to the CBO the damage is already done and now it is just a matter of damage control. of the 3 possible scenarios they worked out 2013 is going to be a bumpy ride. I almost hope obummer gets in so the republicans don’t get blamed.       Obama and Bush knew about the fiscal cliff that was coming and accelerated the process. Bush by going into two wars not paid for, and Obama by spending like a kid with a new credit card. Both weakened the country drastically, but 4 more years wont bring us to the cliff it will shoot us off the cliff like evil Knievel with a rocket.

      Imagine that you are looking to hire a contractor to build your home, and you have two choices before you. One is highly accomplished, and has built hundreds of beautiful homes in his career. The other has only one qualification – in college, he sat in a dorm room smoking pot, talking with his buds about how crappy modern homes are, and what they would do if they could build homes. Furthermore, he refuses to build the home to anything but his own specifications and lies to your face about it.

      It is pretty easy to imagine how your new home would turn out if you hired the latter over the former. That is where we are – he’s the one we hired 4 years ago. To assert that hiring the experienced, accomplished contractor wouldn’t change anything is utterly foolish.

      Angry- Personally I don’t see the problem with expanding the military. For one thing, it is constitutional, it’s something the government is supposed to do…. control the military. But also all historical great nations have large and powerful militaries. Rome, Britain, Spain, China, Alexander’s Macedonia, Assyria, etc etc etc, they all had great militaries. Granted, many of them were used for conquering. But the U.S. is big, a great nation and while I don’t condone going to wars in Iraq , Afghanistan or anywhere else, we should use our great military for ourselves or our allies. I am very pro-military, big military.

      I am for putting the military on the border. Bases could be on the border There is a base with an intelligence school that is miles from the border, but illegals cross thru base housing all the time. How secure is that base. How can people keep their minds on their jobs when aliens are going thru base/family housing.

      I don’t believe DHS is illegal. Too big, dysfunctional? Yes.

      NATO is a good ideal. Managing a bunch of bilateral agreements for mutual protection & coordinating several armies without a command structure in the face of a Russian threat would be hard. One could argue whether NATO was efficient.

      One could argue very successfully that we could & should withdraw from NATO as the European countries have violated their defense obligations. They are suppose to devote 4% to defense & they don;t we are carrying them. this was shown during the Libyan intervention. They could have done it without us. They couldn’t do anything about Bosnia without us. Since they broke a treaty like Saddam broke a treaty, we could say it is no longer valid. In Saddam’s case we invaded. In Europe’s case we leave in disgust.

      Leaving is fraught with some risk. But it might be a good wake up call for Europe. Although some part of Europe’s political class down to the street level have been co-opted by Russia. The Prime Minister of Germany before Merkl, Schröder, ha s position on the boards of Russian oil companies, TNK-BP & Nord Stream AG.

      Oh, our borders aren’t secure as they should be. I certainly don’t think they are. Believe it or not the DHS is unconstitutional; even if it wasn’t as I stated before they are not needed. It’s just another way to spread government and have more control. If the government was doing its job in the first place and actually securing the borders we wouldn’t have that many problems. We also wouldn’t be tricked into thinking we needed the DHS.

      Just a couple of problems with their map. Michigan, Iowa and Nevada will all go for Romney in November no matter how many illegals, dead folks and felons vote and that means that Obama will get less than 200 electoral college votes, the fewest since Carter ran for reelection. But we have to make sure everyone who is legally able gets out there and votes because we gotta plan that at least 5% of the vote in some states will be illegitimate.

      It‘s not over until It’s over. If we listen to the polls and don’t go and vote then Obama will win and we will ask ourselves “What the heck happened? The polls said Romney would win by a landslide.”

      I don’t listen to polls. I vote my conscience and the facts. I already know who I am voting for and it’s not Obama, Paul or anybody else but Romney/Ryan. I do hope that Romney puts Ron Paul in charge of the FED. I believe he’d go in there and set things right. But time will tell and it’s just my opinion which is worth about as much as a rock.       QPWillie – There is no problem with voter fraud. Over the last 10 years there have only been approx. 400 cases nationwide prosecuted for voter fraud (six of those years were under the Bush Administration, I might point out.) All total, that comes out to less than 2 cases per state over a ten year period. Why is the Right jumping on this bandwagon now under the Obama Administration and not when most of the cases happened under the Bust Administration? Why the double standard? My only fear is that these new changes are entirely about voter supression, and every Conservative should be afraid of that too, because voter supression is unconstitutional. No – you’re the one not fooling anyone.

    You can sense the country is going Romney’s way. Ryan has been embraced by the American people. The left can’t attack him the way they did Palin. The media can’t portray him as “dumb”. Ryan is likable, articulate and honest. He’s not a “one percenter” which innoculates him from the usual class warfare tactic Obama likes to use. He frustrates the heck out of the democrats.
    My guess is that by the time the debates roll around this map will not be a prediction but a reality. Obama knows this.

    Obama can‘t articulate what he’s going to do to get us out of this economic doldrum all he can muster is smear and slander and worse yet…he keeps getting caught in his lies thanks to rank incompetents like Stephanie Cutter who are working for his campaign.
    Obamacare remains highly unpopular. His stimulus is the stuff of late night talk show jokes. Unemployment remains stubbornly high. Foreclosures still too high and the economy has essentially flatlined. Consumer confidence still far too low to promote growth. And Obama’s latest talking point “grow the economy from the middle out” is just one of the funniest lines I’ve ever heard…no one believes it.

      I particularly enjoyed watching your clone Fat Eddie Schlitz on MSLSD last night begging Barbara Boxer to give him some talking points to counter the CBO‘s dismal predictions for the economy if Obama raises taxes and keeps spending like he’s doing…and she couldnt’ deliver.

      No, if Romney wins, Holder will be left alone. Republicans don’t want to be a Banana Republic where the previous administration is normally put in jail or killed. Democrats are the ones that prosecute the previous administration people.

      On the other hand, Romney will have to clean house in the Justice Department and get rid of everyone that has subverted the rule of law over the last 3 years. He’ll have to clean house and put in law abiding lawyers, if he can find any.

    Anything’s possible but the chances of Romney taking Minnesota and Pennsylvania and NOT taking Iowa are slim. How can a state like Iowa be so stupid to vote for Obama again? Arent they the “blue collar evangelical state”? I think Romney can win Wisconsin but the chances of the revolution spreading to liberal-ass Minnesota are slim. Pennsylvania might be in play now that they require voter-id now…

    I think its going to be a squeaker and come down to Wisconsin and New Hampshire…if he wins WI, he wins the election…if he loses WI, he needs NH to win 272 to 266…but if these trends continue I could see a similar result as above.

      I asked myself the same question until I remembered hearing reports years ago that the DNC were actively “seeding” Iowa with aggressive Democrat operatives. These people actually transplanted themselves there in many cases, and many others bought second homes there, for the sole purpose of making it a “blue” state, because Iowa has always been considered a strategic linchpin in election politics.

      @HKS…if we have a fair election with limited voter fraud and our votes are counted fairly Romney should win by well over 100 electoral votes…but that wont be the case. I do think the turnout will be so high that even mass voter fraud wont stop Romney from squeaking out a victory and lead to 16 straight years of Romney and Ryan Presidencies.
