‘Electronic Flight Bags’: Air Force Wants Tablets in the Cockpit Too

With the first commercial airlines beginning to bring iPads into the cockpit to replace loads paperwork consisting maps and charts, the U.S. Air Force is seeking to cut down on bulky binders too.
Popular Science reports that the Air Force will be buying up to 18,000 iPad 2s or a similar, equivalent tablet, which is it calling “electronic flight bags”:
“Moving from a paper-based to an electronically-based flight publication system will not only enhance operational effectiveness, it can also save the Department of Defense time and money,” Maj. Gen. Rick Martin, the director of operations for the Air Mobility Command, said in a statement.
In Dec. 2011, American Airlines was approved as the first airline by the FAA to cut out carrying the 40 pounds of paper work by using the iPads. In doing so, it expects to save up to $1 million on fuel each year by reducing the weight. Popular Science reports that Air Force flight binders can weigh up to 70 pounds and time is often wasting updating charts every 28 days.
The military has been testing the tablet at Travis Air Force Base in California for use in C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster. Popular Science also notes that nearly 3,000 tablets will be used by Air Force Special Ops Command crews.
Update: This post was updated to include that the Air Force is considering all devices that meet its requirements, not just the iPad. An Air Force spokesperson said in an email “AMC’s request for proposals will solicit offers from any vendors who can meet the requirements, as they are entitled to a fair and open competition. Once the RFP closes, all offers on the table will be considered, and the right decision will be made for AMC’s mission. Until then, any reference to a brand decision is inaccurate and premature.”

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 9:19amI hate all the revisions. Put 3 in each aircraft and go I say! However I would much rather have it all integraded into the cocpit. For a hard copy backup just put the gov. issue charts in the place where your Jepps used to be. Cheap, out of the way and there if and when needed.

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 9:17amI do not understand how AMC could be test driving an IPAD for EFB. IPAD is not FIPS 140-2 compliant. Loading any information on this device that is not available for full and public release is a violation of the Air Force’s Data At Rest Policy.

The pilots can have iPads mere inches from all that delicate electronic equipment, but the guy in 27C playing Angry Birds on his iPhone is going to crash the aircraft?

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 10:50pmWhats funny is these guys will conduct low level combat missions and drop supplies and troops while flying, navigating, talking to the ground troops, avoiding ground fire, and working the IPAD. Multi tasking at its best. Then they will get a ticket if the use their IPHONE while driving on base. I never understood the USAF.

Posted on February 9, 2012 at 10:37pmSomeone please explain. Instead of increasing Apple stock and basically brainwashing new generations of flight crews to Apple devices, why aren’t flight bags done away with altogether. Why should the bag go with the pilot in the form of an iPad? Planes cockpits should be updated to include access and updating to the pilots flight records as needed. Clearly the iPad is not going to be the notebook but the device to access the notebook remotely. SO the plane should do it not the iPad. Of course I see the use for this for private planes but not for commercial and especially not in military!

Posted on February 10, 2012 at 2:14amThe iPad may not deserve a place in military cockpit, but sometimes we don’t need to buy a car when a simple oil change will do.
