A young special ed elementary school teacher has died after a stunt went terribly wrong at a Chicago Halloween party.
23-year-old Megan Dusky fell to her death while trying to slide down a hotel hand rail, police say. She died instantly from head trauma.
Duskey taught special ed classes at Orville T. Bright Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side, the local Fox affiliate reports. Her family calls her a “caring, energetic person who was full of life and eager to help others and make a difference in the world.”
She was partying with friends at the “Haunted Hotel Ball” and went dressed in a yellow and black costume resembling the comic book superhero the Silver Spectre, authorities said.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 9:42pmPoor cute kitten, she never had a chance. But hey, anyone who went to college or recently spent time in a grade school (even as a elementary school parent) understands what elementary ed majors are like. They truly command an intellectual force that’s without peer.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 6:33pmI’m sorry,if this offends here. That said, Teachers are expected to have more sense than to do that. A “stunt” “freak accident”? How does one define the word accident? 23 years old & a teacher for special ed. Meaning she must have been educated enough to know the danger. If this was a party was alcohol served?maybe enough to impair her judgement. But again I don’t think that can be called a freak accident nor a stunt. And where were the other partyers? Shouldn’t they have known better & yanked her off? Somehow this doesn’t make sense to me.OK so call me insensitive.but what are we teaching our kids about being stupid? Isn’t the story “I’d rather have them hate me & live to learn than to lose them because I didn’t want to be the bad guy” And I am a mom of 4,grandma of 7

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 3:57pmIt’s such a shame. It’s quite unfortunate that a “teacher” would do something so stupid. I‘m sure it wasn’t the first time she had one too many drinks.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 12:22pmI’m sorry for the family. Hopefully this story will save the life of some young person in the future. God only knows why it happened to such a wonderful person, but He has His reasons and just maybe if will make the next young person think twice before doing something stupid. May God Bless.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 12:17pmShe tried to slide down a four story railing?
And she‘s ’educated’?
While my sympathies go out to those she left behind, it seems she wasn’t very careful in her own life.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 12:16pmThis silly satanic “holiday” claims yet another. Every year the day after halloween you can read stories about how someone got themselves killed. I know…I know people get killed on all kinds of holidays but not the ones that go Boo….Trick or Treat?

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 8:41amI lost a child too, who made a “bad decision”, and paid the ultimate price. As anyone can imagine, it was devastating. With so much to offer this world, and so much love for life, we are still dealing with the heartbreak. Prayers for him, and all those affected by his death were so needed and helped so much. The last thing we want to hear is how his poor judgement was to blame. We already know that, and think about it often. Few people think about dying when doing something to be funny, and our young people certainly don’t have a monopoly on taking chances or using poor judgement. If we could have that day back, would it have changed anything? I don’t know! IMO, those who believe in God know that he is in control, and that is the only sure thing in life. Our hearts go out to this young woman’s family, and their tragic loss.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 8:11amSliding down a bannister 4 stories above a floor is not something that a person in control of their judgement is going to do. The real story here is that our young children are being taught and cared for by people that are still maturing. Perhaps raising the minimum age for teachers might add some gravitas to the profession.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 9:28amMrmel’s right–Is this the kind of action a person would take on any average day–or was it because it was Halloween (read: get drunk and act crazy)? Her judgment was poor–I would have questioned her judgment in other situations as well, particularly with disabled children.

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 8:02amMy heart hurts for her and her family. I lost a 20 year old son under tragic circumstances, so I know the pain the family is going through. They need their faith, family, and friends to get through this difficult time. Remember them in your prayers. It takes a special person to teach special ed, and Chicago’s South Side is a difficult place in which to teach in the best circumstances. She had to be a special person.

Yes, people like her are special indeed. I managed to survive my own stupidity moment at 16, thought I could outsmart a wild boar I was hunting, it had other ideas and almost killed me in the process of becoming dinner.
Each of us has a reality check in which we know what real mortality is all about, and sometimes the line is crossed. I am sorry this happened to such a special person indeed.
