Elizabeth Edwards Dies in North Carolina

Just one day after the family announced Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer treatment had run its course, the news out of North Carolina is that the 61-year-old estranged wife of former U.S. Sen. John Edwards succumbed to her illness and passed away Tuesday afternoon. WRAL reports:

Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home, where family and friends had gathered in recent days after doctors informed her that her cancer had spread and recommended that she not undergo further treatment.

Edwards was first diagnosed with cancer in the waning days of the 2004 presidential campaign, when her husband, then-U.S. Sen. John Edwards, was the Democratic nominee for vice president. The couple didn’t disclose her illness until after the election.

The cancer went into remission after surgery and months of treatment, but it resurfaced in early 2007, as John Edwards was mounting a second run at the White House. The Edwardses agreed at the time that they wouldn’t allow the cancer to derail his candidacy.

Because the cancer had moved into her bones, her doctors said at that time that it was no longer curable but could be treated.

Elizabeth Edwards no doubt made many mistakes as we all have, that does not lessen the loss to her loved ones. Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. We all need that.

      Georgiejo,

If she was not a born again Christian then she is indeed in hell right now. I am reading a lot of “God has another angel” type comments, and I understand the need to try and convey Christian sympathy, but I also think it is vitally important for everyone to realize that if she was not a Christian then she is not with God now. That is fact, even though it is a hard one.

I also want to note that I am NOT commenting on her fate, I have no way to know what her faith was. But we are known by our fruits and some of her fruits were dubious at best. But then again we are all sinners and all prone to folly. I can only pray that she knew her Lord and Savior.

Read your Bible calijohn, then get down on your knees and ask Christ to forgive you your sins and ask Him into your life. THAT is your only chance my friend. :-)

that poor guy out in the rainforest has no idea about christianity. the buddist in tibet may know nothing about christianity.
      but, they’re all condemned.
after spending 13 years in catholic schools, including the last 3 in a seminary, i have come to realize the christ is a moderate person, a healer. he most certainly isn’t a vengeful demon as you portray him.

      Calijohn,

Yes, the poor guy in the rain forest and the Buddhist are condemned, as are you, and me! We are ALL condemned to hell! You got that right.

The only way out is Christ. Salvation is by faith alone. I find it interesting that you spent 3 years in seminary and yet you do not capitalize the title of the Christ! But I agree with all that you say about Him. He is a healer and is certainly not a vengeful demon as you claim I portray Him. I would never do that. But you need to study your Bible more carefully because it unequivocally says that the only way to the Father is through the Son.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

      1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

I could go on…You can believe what you like, the fact that you accept much of the Catholic doctrine tells me that you are willing to add on to Scripture…I am not going to argue that here, I was also raised a Catholic and my parents remain Catholic. They believe in salvation through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that is sufficient. I believe in Sola Scriptura. I also believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible as dictated by the Chicago Statement on Bible Inerrancy. It seems pretty simple to me, and there is no doubt what the Bible says about this. Jesus made it clear to Nicodemus in John 3 what it took for salvation:

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

That, my friend, is as plain as it can get! Belief in anything contrary to Christ’s own words is to your own peril!

Way too many alleged Christians mouthing off about someone they never knew, and sound like they are rejoicing in the idea that someone went to He||. Utterly disgraceful, as is the Bible-beating proselytizing. Do we really need to open that up here? I’m sure there are much more appropriate forums for the protestant lackwits to spout of their theories than here in this obituary.

It makes my stomach turn when I hear someone speak ill off the dead, any dead. It can be tolerated when someone is alive, critique and judge them all you want. But when they die the judging is God’s alone and you can release your anger and passion.

      thegaypiper,

What is an “alleged” Christian? One that does not agree with your warped theology? ;-)

As for my part, I can judge Elizabeth Edwards on what she stood for and how she lived her life as a public figure. Am I rejoicing in the thought of anyone going to hell? Lord no, that is why I am beating my Bible and proselytizing here! I do not want there to be ANY mistakes at what the Bible actually tells us. It is one thing to be an atheist and not believe in God, I can respect that and while I will preach the gospel to them initially, I will tend to back off sooner with them. But for a believer to think that there is any other way to heaven other than Christ is heresy and MUST be corrected! That is more important than Elizabeth Edward’s death. She is gone as we all will be one day. It is too late for her, she made her choice one way or the other. I do not claim to know where she is at now, for all I know she was a good Christian despite whatever else she did with her life. But it is beside the point, she has now reached her destination. What is more important is reaching living, breathing people that still have the chance to accept the free gift of salvation that Christ offers. If this offends you then so what? You will not be the first person I have offended and you certainly will not be the last. That is of no consequence when we are talking about eternal life…or suffering…

I don’t think anyone here is rejoincing in anyone going to hell. But there is a reality that I think a lot of people are ignorant to and that is that many people are going to hell–unfortunately.
And what Trolltrainer is talking about, whether people find it offensive or not, is how there is only 1 way to avoid going to hell and that coincides with the one way to get into the Kingdom of God–and that’s by salvation through Jesus Christ.

It doesn’t matter if you choose to believe that or not–it is what it is– and it’s the only way, because the one true God said so. We all will one day come to that reality when we die and I hope for everyone’s sake they accept this truth in their own lives. I certainly would not wish hell on anyone.

I don’t understand why this needs to be breaking news. Elizabeth Edwards remained out of the public spotlight throughout most of John Edward’s career, including his unimpressive campaign for the office of President. The only time she really made headline news was when John was being naughty. Her privacy was respected then, and should be now as well. So with no disrespect to a lady I know nothing about, I see no relevant breaking news. God Bless her, and everyone else who lives and dies. Rah Rah Rah, we announced a death. That‘s all I’m hearing.

It is called compassion. It is about caring that yet another person has succumbed to a terrible disease that has left her family hurting. It is enough to know that she was a fellow human being. She represents one of hundreds that passed away today from cancer. There are hundreds of hurting people out there, fighting, in some cases, a losing battle; just most of them don’t have a public persona. Elizabeth Edwards is a someone. That is why it matters.
I have no love for Progressive politics or the iniquity that my fellow man commits. Jonathan Edwards will get his just rewards for his despicable behavior. As to Elizabeth, she now knows her reward-good or bad. May God have mercy and grace upon all of us.

I truly feel sorry that she had to suffer. I truly feel sorry for her children and friends. I will offer a prayer for her soul, to a God she didn’t believe in. Bottom line, is that I will not mourn her as something she never was. John Edwards, you bum. You did not deserve this woman, who suspended treatments to campaign for YOU. Who suffered the jokes and mocking and disdain of an entire civilization for your selfish and tawdry transgressions and deceptions. Who provided a sterling example of Christian faith and fidelity that brought honor to her own vows, while exposing the lies that were YOURS.

You are a disgrace and an embarrassment to all men, sir. Elizabeth Edwards died, according to the statement, with family and friends all around. I fervently hope that YOU die a dog’s death, and a mangy, diseased one at that: alone, unmourned, and unremembered.

I think you’re overdoing it on how tragic for the country Elizabeth Edwards death is. She knew exactly what her husband was up while trying to deceive the country into thinking her husband was such a wonderful man. Both John and Elizabeth covered up their big lie despite knowing what Bill Clinton had done to their own party and to the country from late 1995 until early 1999.

Reetzbee, it’s NOT “tragic” for the country, but for her and her family.

When we stop having compassion for our political opponents, they cease to be merely “opponents”, and become “enemies”. The path to the Obama side, that is, hmmm?

Others have commented on Elizabeth Edwards’ assistance to the Clintons and in other less-than-savory political enterprises. Fair enough… She, like many of us I suspect, was capable of poor judgment, deception, even outright wrongdoing. And she will be judged for all of that, I’m sure… But not by me. No matter that I disagreed with her about just about everything ideologically, politically or what have you… She had many fine qualities and suffered in this world with dignity and a certain degree of integrity. And she was a human being, and from what I can ascertain, a good mother and exceptional partner, and an example of grace under pressure in an age full of shallowness, whining, and sanctimony.

She deserves respect, and sympathy, and that’s all there is to say.

I was suggesting to her to check herself since she was admonishing others, in a Yoda like fashion, to be nice to Elizabeth and not make political adversaries enemies lest they “slip to the Obama side”, however she was being very harsh and venomous to John E in an earlier post. The words in “quotes” were her words used to reinforce my point. May the grace of God comfort her family, and sustain them for the time to come. Let the great and joyous parts of her life live on in others memories instead of the pain of loss and suffering. May the light her life shown on the world be carried forward to others as well.

      @Grandmaof5

Good day, my main computer burned out today so I have to write this from the computer lab in the apartments commons; so some of the bloggers here will not see me as often. Wanted to let you know as until I get a new one, there will be fewer postings from me. (Broker 0101 will most likely be very happy indeed.)

I was hoping she would be able to make it past Christmas. This is such a hard time of year to lose a loved one. I pray for her children. Rest in peace!

We all get to take that step into the darkness, I hope there was someone there to hold her hand and make it a gentle step.
“Oh death where is thy sting, oh grave were is thy victory”.
Like with child birth, the fear and pain are only on this side, for when the child comes forth into the world all of the fear and pain of the delivery are replaced by the joy of the new life that has begun.
I am sure that death is the same way.

I’ll let you know for sure after I take my turn!

SNOWLEOPARD3200, bummer about your computer. I’ll miss your posts and hope you are able to replace it soon; at least you have somewhere you can go to use a computer. As for Broker0101, I’m sure he/she will find another way to entertain him/herself until you are back full time. Please keep us all posted. Best of everything and God bless.

      Lord,
Please comfort the family. Give them strength, hope and the same courage you gave to Elizabeth. For everyone who are hurting from their losses today and everyday, draw them into your loving arms for comfort and healing. For those in the fight, grant them strength to overcome, peace to know your will, and the blessing of having family to encourage and support them.
      In Jesus’ name
      Amen.

Snowleopard, Hurry up and get that new ‘puter!

hey gma, i think you are correct about how much elizabeth suffered. i also have cancer and my spouse practiced adultery during our marrige. let me tell you that there is nothing in this world worse than knowing the person you love and trust more than anything in this world has just put a knife through your heart. i really hope that the “breck girl” as rush calls him, is feeling great guilt for the rest of his miserable life. he is a loser in a lot of way’s. he is nothing but a pile of dirt.

VAMPIREPOSSUM, that breaks my heart and is something I just can’t fathom. I am so sorry that you are going through such a terrible time and hope that your treatments are successful. Have a blessed Christmas, I will keep you in my prayers, and hopefully 2011 will be a better year.

Did anyone else notice she never mentioned God as being one of sources of strength? Her three “sustaining graces” were her family, friends, and a faith in the power of hope and resilience. WTF! I don’t even know what that is. I feel bad for her kids and all but the Left is Godless.

longhorn mama.. do you THINK that if she mentioned GOD that the left would have reported it/? IF she didn’t look to him for comfort that was her decision.. some are angry with him when things like this happen while others turn to him..how she felt and whom was her comfort are between her and her GOD..Right now my prayers are for her and her family she was a strong lady that went through a lot in her life..May God take mercy on her.. and welcome her into his kingdom so she can be with her son..

The quote was from E.E.’s last facebook post so no Left twist on the reporting. And as these are her deathbed words essentially, I feel she denied God in the end. Do I know this absolutely? No. But is it a good guess? Yes.

The only was God.. capital G and capital H when speaking about Him, will have mercy on her soul, is if she went through Jesus Christ to get to Him, because that’s the only way to reach God—through His son. Otherwise, she will not be in His kindgom. I hope for her sake, she is.
