Elizabeth Warren: ‘I Misunderstood the Question’ About Harvard Listing Me as a Minority

Elizabeth Warren: I Misunderstood the Question About Harvard Listing Me as a Minority

AP

Elizabeth Warren acknowledged Thursday she is concerned about her Senate campaign following weeks of controversy surrounding her Native American heritage.

Warren, who’s looking to oust Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), admitted this week for the first time that she told Harvard University about her ancestry — contrasting her initial claim that she was unaware until recently that the school had listed her as a minority professor.

She told reporters on April 27 she only became aware of Harvard’s listing after reading a report in the Boston Herald. In a new interview with the Boston Globe, she said she “misunderstood the question.”

In the interview, she reiterated again the law schools at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania hired her because of her abilities, not because of her heritage, and said she only told them of her minority status after she was hired.

Admitting for the first time that she’s worried about the impact of the controversy on her campaign, she told the Globe: “Of course I’m concerned.”

“I decided to run for the Senate because the middle class has been hammered and Washington doesn’t get it. I want to talk about Scott Brown’s voting record,” she said. “He has worked hard to make this campaign about anything else, even my heritage, and he’s not spending time on what Massachusetts voters are concerned about.”

Warren has frequently cited family lore as evidence of her Native American heritage, despite a lack of documented evidence. Revealing more details of her family’s background, she said her parents eloped because of tensions their two families over her mother’s ancestry.

“In the 1930s, when my parents got married, these were hard issues,’’ she told the Globe. “My father’s family so objected to my mother’s Native American heritage that my mother told me they had to elope.

“As kids, my brothers and I knew about that. We knew about the differences between our two families. And we knew how important my mother’s heritage was to her. This was real in my life. I can’t deny my heritage. I can’t and I won’t. That would be denying who my mother was, who my family was, how we lived, and I won’t do it.’’

She is digging herself a deeper hole. It stands to reason, if you cannot understand a question on an application that asks you what your ethnicity is, how can you understand ANYTHING as complicated as the senate? She lied to get ahead on minority status, got found out, gave several lame excuses, now she doesn’t understand the question, what is your ethnicity? Her genealogist was wrong, she does not have Cherokee heritage, the Cherokee Nation looked for themselves and found NO Cherokee lineage. Then she made the “high cheekbone” reference, now all this mess about breastfeeding. Is she off her meds or what? By the way, since she said earlier that she was Native American on her application and she did that so maybe one day she could have “luncheons” with people like her, maybe she will honor us with the next date there will be an Annual 1/32 Cherokee Luncheon?

This is so pathetic. When I was growing up, we all claimed to be Indians of one tribe or another. We all knew we weren’t but we had fun with it nevertheless. This is just like black Americans claiming to be African because somewhere back in history there was an African in the mix. Whatever.

“I want to talk about his voting record”… “he’s not spending time on what voters are concerned about.”… Yeah, voters aren’t concerned about honesty or integrity, only about what Walker voted for in the past… I remember this lady saying rich people wouldn‘t be rich if it wasn’t for the people who built the roads.. She doesn’t even understand what she says herself.. Just so you know, lady…A rich person built the roads, voters only spend time on what they are concerned about, and you should recognize that the voters already know his voting record, and move on to something else… I tell ya, I am quickly changing my views about this Ivy League claim to be the top schools in the nation.

“In the 1930s, when my parents got married, these were hard issues,’’ she told the Globe. “My father’s family so objected to my mother’s Native American heritage that my mother told me they had to elope.”

Honestly. How would her father’s family know about the Native heritage? Seriously. According to Wikipedia

Elizabeth Herring[1] was born June 22, 1949,[2] in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to working class parents Pauline (née Reed) and Donald Jones Herring.[3][4][5] She was the Herrings’ fourth child, with three older brothers.[6] When Warren was twelve, her father, a janitor, had a heart attack, which led to a pay cut, medical bills, and eventually the loss of their car. Her mother answered phones at Sears and Warren worked as a waitress.[6][7] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Warren

There is a whole section devoted to this controversy, but nothing substantial. The last names of Reed and Herring don’t seems particularly Native American. As a matter of fact, Reed goes back to the early English settlers in New England.

Unless her father walked into the family home and said, “Here’s my gal Pauline. Don’t mind the high cheekbones, she has ancestors in the Cherokees and Delaware tribes.”

So, how’d they know? These are unanswered questions.
