‘Embarrassed and Humiliated’: TSA Apologizes After Ordering Nursing Mom to Pump Breast Milk Into Bottles Before Boarding

The Transportation Security Administration has apologized after a mother in Hawaii was left “embarrassed and humiliated” after an agent ordered her to pump breast milk in an airport bathroom to prove her electric pump was real.
Amy Strand was traveling with her 9-month-old daughter on her way home from Kauai Wednesday when she was told she would not be allowed to board until she could show the agent full bottles of breast milk, Hawaii ABC affiliate KITV-TV reported.
Just minutes before going through security Wednesday, she said she had done “what no nursing mother wants to do” and dumped the breast milk from the bottles, thinking they would be a screening hassle. But when she was going through the line, the agent stopped her and asked to look at her equipment, which included the pump, a cooler pack and the empty bottles. Because recently-changed TSA guidelines permit women to fly with breast milk but treat electric pumps as medical equipment, Strand had to prove the pump was medically necessary to be able to fly with it.
“I asked him if there was a private place I could pump and he said no, you can go in the women’s bathroom. I had to stand in front of the mirrors and the sinks and pump my breast in front of every tourist that walked into that bathroom,” she told KITV. “I was embarrassed and humiliated and then angry that I was treated this way.”

KITV-TV
Strand, a mother of four and a high school principal in Maui, told ABC she frequently travels between the islands for business and has never had a problem with her electric pump before.
“There was no misunderstanding,” she said. “I really only had two options: leave part of it behind or pump.”
On the verge of tears, Strand said she was finally allowed to board with the other passengers when she was through.
“It really confuses me as to how an empty breast pump and cooler pack are a threat to national security and 20 minutes later, with milk, they no longer pose a threat to national security,” she told ABC.
In a statement to KITV, the TSA admitted their agent was mistaken when he told Strand “that she could only bring the pack if it was medically necessary.”
“We accept responsibility for the apparent misunderstanding and any inconvenience or embarrassment this incident may have caused her,” the statement said.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 9:42amTSA = Travel Sanctions Abound
The TSA postures for security but provides none. We have given up so much. Spent so much all in the name of being PC. Can’t mention “jihad” or the reason we need security measures. Can’t profile for the terrorists. No, that wouldn’t be PC would it? Yet profiling works every day in crime prevention and criminal capture. Funny those facts get side stepped by the TSA. So we spend an extraordinary amount of time and money screening everyone, because of a war that was declared on Americans.
How ludicrous!
Death of common sense. This administration has no clothes. It’s time to vote the emperor O-U-T!
I won’t fly until this nonsense is stopped. I won’t be patted, probed, or scanned. Forgetaboutit. I don’t have to go anywhere by plane for that treatment. I won’t give up my rights. I’m surprised at the number of people that go along with it. If everyone stopped flying, this administration would possibly rethink their draconian measures.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 11:22amJZS – As I recall, the only bombing attempt that has been thwarted since the implementation of the TSA goons was the banana hammock bomber…. and as I recall, that wasn’t caught by TSA, it was passengers on the plane after they’d already boarded & been seated. Probably because he was a “minority” so he was waved on through. Heaven forbid we actually treat everyone equally in this country regardless of skin color… after all, wouldn’t want to be called a “racist” or an “Islamophobe” for expecting EVERYONE regardless of their skin color or how they are dressed to be subjected to the same treatment as a 70+ year old wheelchair-bound grandmother who is forced to remove her adult diaper. That would just make no sense at all. As long we continue to make concessions out of fear of being accused of “profiling” then garbage like this serves no purpose but to humiliate innocent people. There comes a point where it’s not profiling, but is instead a description of the suspect. After all, how many wheel-chair bound grandmothers have carried explosives onto airplanes or flown airplanes into skyscrapers? But, it’s only common sense – something the left is devoid of, so I can certainly see how someone such as yourself would be perfectly fine with forcing those who absolutely do not fit the typical description of “terrorist” to be humiliated, while we wave all the 20-something young Arab men on through the check point, otherwise we’re “profiling”.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 12:33pmBiden introduced a bill while in the senate called the Omnibus Counter-terrorism Act of 1995. It previewed the 2001 Patriot Act by allowing secret evidence to be used in prosecutions, expanding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and wiretap laws, creating a new federal crime of “terrorism” that could be invoked based on political beliefs, permitting the U.S. military to be used in civilian law enforcement, and allowing permanent detection of non-U.S. citizens without judicial review. The Center for National Security Studies said the bill would erode “constitutional and statutory due process protections” and would “authorize the Justice Department to pick and choose crimes to investigate and prosecute based on political beliefs and associations.”
Report Post »Biden himself draws parallels between his 1995 bill and its 2001 cousin. “I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing. And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill,” he said when the Patriot Act was being debated, according to the New Republic, which described him as “the Democratic Party’s de facto spokesman on the war against terrorism.”

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 10:20pmSistaTriscuit asks, “After all, how many wheel-chair bound grandmothers have carried explosives onto airplanes…” I agree, there have been none yet. Nor have there been any white guys caught trying to sneak explosives into an airplane. But they could right? Especially if the TSA never checked them. Excluding certain people from from TSA examination – despite the Constitutional issues – is a hole, a weakness, that terrorists would be certain to exploit. If you think there is not one crazy white guy would carry a bomb onto an airplane I think you are naive. McViegh ring a bell?
The search is meant to be random, and checking babies and grandmas is not an accident. The idea is that nobody can walk through security without some chance of being scrutinized. And yes, if the bad guys had a sure way of getting through security and blowing up an airplane, they probably would have by now.
SistaTriscuit, thinking as Republicans do, I think every woman should have a pelvic exam before boarding an airplane. You women could be concealing explosives there. You Republicans don’t seem have any qualms about that sort of procedure. You wouldn’t object to that I guess.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 8:58amThese untrained bullies are out of control. We ned to start standing up and asking for a supervisor to show us (in their rules-for-sheeple) policy book exactly why we are being harrassed.
We need to get the press involved immediately after a harrassment. I think too much of this kind of brown-shirted behavior goes on unreported for the sake of getting to ones destination.
That’s a real shame.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 9:12amThings like this have been going on for well over a year. The country is already lost. No one has done anything about it and no one will. We are too complacent, comfortable, and largely cowards (perhaps self included). The TSA and other government cronies will not stop unless forced to stop. Remember, this is the same agency now patrolling some highways, bus stations, and train stations. They will soon be everywhere as a domestic security force as well funded and powerful as our military.
The only questions that matter is who do you serve while you are here and where will you be when your body dies?

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 9:31amDan-o, You say the country is lost, but there are people standing up and saying, “enough”, aren’t there? Don’t just give up. Not everyone has accepted this nonsense.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 12:41pm@Justangry, I hear you, I do. I don’t think voting is going to be enough. People are looking to a presidential candidate for hope, as if government can fix government. Will Romney be better? Sure, how could he be worse? Will he turn the country around? I doubt it. Only the people can do that and I don’t see enough opposition to make me think they are ready or willing to do that. If the woman in this story were my wife or daughter, I’d be in jail right now after separating a few TSA agents from their teeth. Where is that reaction? Where are the men who won’t allow their grandmother or child to be groped in the name of “security”?! They are probably at home, like me. If we’re not willing to fight, I do feel the country is lost.
That’s the selfish/worldly side of me. On to the questions I raised, where are our hopes? It is clear that at least 50% of country has their hope in government. It is also clear to any thinking person those hopes are misplaced. So, I ask again (speaking as much to myself), whom do you serve? What is your fate?
Report Post »justangry
Posted on March 3, 2012 at 4:02pmI serve no one. I don’t believe in fate, only free will.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 6:27pmWell, I serve my family and I swore an oath to defend the Constitution. I’m lost trying to figure out the best way to do it. Voting, and spreading the word seems to be the best option at the moment, but no government thug has tried to molest my daughter yet. Maybe after we find clarity, we can play cards in FEMA camp.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 8:57amFor those of you who are willing to vote for those who brought us or supported the Patriot Act, the NDAA, and the DHS/TSA, when this happens to you….remember…YOU VOTED FOR IT.
There is only one candidate left who actually believes in the Bill of Rights, and many of you call him crazy.
So sad…..
Ron Paul 2012…or bend over for Big Brother whenever he demands it.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 9:43amYup, the way I see it is, if you vote for anyone other than Ron Paul this time around, you’re every bit as guilty as the TSA agent who so obviously crapped on her constitutional rights. I know that’s a tough pill for a lot of people to swallow, but… there’s Iran
I want everyone who feels this way to watch the following. It’s long, but important.

It’s inconceivable in my mind how there are so many who decry the destruction of the Bill of Rights, and yet somehow vote for those who are responsible.
They are so blinded by the NWO Boogyman that has been propped up by the very same people, that they willingly and blindly vote for their own destruction.
It would appear that in their minds, defeating the Boggyman is far more important than freedom itself, while folks like us try to point out the fact that if we must destroy the Bill of Rights to catch this Boggyman….there is nothing left worth saving.
They have been hoodwinked by the powers that be on both sides into trading the Constitution for a so called feeling of safety.
Our own corrupt politicians who force this false choice upon us are far more dangerous to our nation than any imaginable so called threat that is used as an excuse to enslave us…and it is so sad to witness those who are so close to my own line of thinking falling for this insanity.
Thanks for your courage to stand up for that which is unpopular, and your abilty to see the big picture….and thanks for sharing that link. We can only hope more folks watch it and wake up to what’s really happening right before their very eyes.
Ron Paul 2012…or bend over for the NWO.
