GOP Leaders Issue Defiant Statements as Emergency White House Debt Talks Get Underway

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prospects for a breakthrough in debt talks Saturday at the White House appeared dim as Republican leaders issued defiant statements ahead of their meeting with President Barack Obama.
A visibly irritated Obama on Friday summoned congressional leaders from both parties to find a way to raise the debt limit before an Aug. 2 deadline cuts off the government’s borrowing authority.
Neither House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, nor Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., seemed optimistic before the session with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“If the White House won’t get serious, we will,” Boehner’s office said. Boehner announced late Friday he was walking out of the negotiations.
The statement noted that Obama has said he wants an agreement that will take care of the problem through the November 2012 elections.
“It would be terribly unfortunate if the president was willing to veto a debt limit increase simply because its timing would not be ideal for his re-election campaign,” according to Boehner’s office.
McConnell said in a statement that it was “disappointing that the talks with the White House did not reach a favorable conclusion, and I appreciate the speaker insisting on reduced spending and opposing the president’s call for higher taxes on American families and job creators.”
At a hastily scheduled news conference Friday after Boehner’s announcement, Obama told reporters, “We have run out of time and they are going to have to explain to me how it is that we are going to avoid default.
Boehner accepted the invitation for Saturday’s meeting even while arguing that Obama bore the blame for the collapse.
“It’s the president who walked away from his agreement and demanded more money at the last minute,” Boehner said. “And the only way to get that extra revenue was to raise taxes.”
The political theater played out even as the deadline neared. Barring action by then, the Treasury will be unable to pay its bills. That could cause interest rates to rise, threaten the U.S. economic recovery and send shock waves around the globe.
The deadline pressure hasn’t seemed to bring the parties closer, even though they all insist they do not want a default.
For the first time since talks began, Obama declined to offer assurances that a default would be avoided, although moments later he said he was confident of that outcome.
Obama said Boehner left a deal on the table that was better for Republicans than for Democrats, with $2.6 trillion in cuts outweighing new tax revenue of $1.2 trillion. The president said he was losing confidence that the underlying deficit problems would be dealt with even if the borrowing limit rose.
“I’ve been left at the altar now a couple of times,” Obama said.
Still, aides on both sides said there was agreement on gradually raising the age of eligibility of Medicare from 65 to 67 for future beneficiaries, and slowing the increase in cost-of-living raises in Social Security checks.
Even by the recent standards of divided government, Boehner’s decision triggered an extraordinary evening Friday as the Democratic president and then the Republican speaker maneuvered for political position on this vital issue.
Unspoken, yet unmistakable in all the brinkmanship was the 2012 election campaign, still 18 months away, with the White House and both houses of Congress at stake.
Obama devoted his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday to the impasse and urged Republicans to make a deal.
“We can come together for the good of the country and reach a compromise. We can strengthen our economy and leave for our children a more secure future,” the president said. “Or we can issue insults and demands and ultimatums at each another, withdraw to our partisan corners and achieve nothing.”
Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, pressed the Republicans‘ sharply opposing view in his party’s weekly address.
“If we’re going to avoid any type of default and downgrade – if we’re going to resume job creation in America – the president and his allies need to listen to the people and work with Republicans to cut up the credit cards once and for all,” he said.
Private, sometimes-secret negotiations had veered uncertainly for weeks, generating reports as late as Thursday that the two sides were possibly closing in on an agreement to slash spending. That triggered a revolt among Democrats who expressed fears the president was giving away too much in terms of cuts to Medicare and Social Security while getting too little by way of additional revenues.
Obama said his only requirement for an agreement was legislation that provides the Treasury enough borrowing authority to tide the government over through the 2012 election. Boehner said he had little interest in a short-term extension either.
Republican aides said Obama had upped his demand for higher taxes during the week. The aides said administration officials had tacitly agreed to $800 billion in new revenue over 10 years but that the White House backed away and wanted $400 billion more.
Aides said the two sides were not able to bridge their differences over the triggers designed to force Congress to enact both tax changes and cuts to Medicare and other benefit programs by early next year. Both sides also were apart on the size of cuts for Medicaid, the health care program for the poor and disabled.
Yet aides on both sides said the negotiations had yielded agreement for cuts of $250 billion from Medicare.

Many of the same congressmen today had no problem allowing Bush to raise the debt ceiling, 7 times while in office. Not only did the debt ceiling go up so did the deficit, national debt while the only that went down was the value of the American dollar.
Now these same republicans have a problem raising the debt ceiling under a black man as president. We don’t have a spending problem, we have revenue problem. Tax cuts that weren’t paid for, wars that weren’t paid, prescription drugs that weren’t paid and now THE REPUBLICANS WANT THE WORKING CLASS, ELDERY AND THE POOR TO PAY WHILE THE RICH WALK AWAY FREE.

I have said before and say again, forget taxing the rich, try taxing the 50 percent who do not pay any taxes at all??? The Dems who are claiming that the Repub are throwing this country off a cliff need to throw water on themselves and wake up. Who have spent this country into the mess we have now…. and that includes 2 years of the Bush Adminstration. With all the commercials they have with throwing people off a cliff, there are several situations that can prove that they were the ones who made the cliff high and now there is no choice. If they got to continue to do what they were doing, they not only would have built the cliff but would have built a big enough one to throw everyone off!!

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 12:25amWhat I do NOT understand is why the gutless Republicans in Congress are letting ODumber get away with this charade of sabotaging everything they propose, then going on TV and acting all pissed off and indignant about how the Republicans are “obstructing” their attempts to avert a crisis.
He is setting them UP with these “negotiations”. Do they NOT understand this? What nobody is talking about–and this is another thing I do NOT understand about these gutless Republicans–is according to the Constitution, it is the PRESIDENT’S JOB to present a budget to Congress. Has he done that? NO! Essentially, he has dumped a policital hot potato that he does not want to deal with–and probably does not know HOW to deal wi9th, in Congress’ laps, then is pointing fingers at them for failing to do HIS job for him! What nerve! Why are they not calling him on this ploy?
If I were a Republican in Congress, I would stand up and say for the record, “Excuse me, but it is the President’s job to present a budget to Congress. Where is his budget? And why is he expecting us to do HIS job?” I bet that would put a stop to a lot of this posturing and play-acting on ODumber’s part in a hell of a hurry! What I DON’T understand is why they have not done this?? Are they REALLY that stupid, or are they in it WITH him?

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 12:13pmFACTS:
• Obama and the Democrats only wants to spend tax-payer money and grow government.
• Obama and Democrats owned the presidency, House and Senate and never even had a budget or worried about the deficit.
• Obama is in the white house entirely because he is black hew simply is not qualified to be president.
• Obama’s presidency was many Americans proving once and for all that they are not racist and by putting this clown in the white house would finally prove that fact .
Truth:
• Obama is not worried about the deficit (due date August 2th) what he is worried about is missing his birthday party on August 3rd.
President Obama is slated to celebrate his 50th birthday with a major fundraiser at Chicago’s historic Aragon Ballroom on August 3. A campaign official told CBS News that the campaign is moving forward with the event, though the White House says it could be cancelled if a deal is not reached on raising the debt limit by the August 2 deadline.
The dick has been campaigning since he was elected in 2008 and has never stopped! Maybe in the end he will take the all the campaign money and move back to Kenya and be king!
We sure don’t want him here.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 5:39pmNow there is a sense of urgency for the democrats. Why? They are about to run out of other people’s money to spend.
No urgency to formulate and pass a budget for two years.
This is a mess of their own creation. They ran the debt up since 2006, often without a budget in place. For several of those years they had both houses and still couldn’t pass a budget. They blame GWB, for deficit spending for Iraq and Afghanistan, yet did nothing to fund the wars through cutting spending elsewhere or raising revenue, which is the job of congress in their role of (mis)managing the purse. Why? Because they were busy spending money we did not have. Funding the wars would have meant no “new, new, new deal” or Obamacare. Even now, they will not reduce spending as it would bring up the specter of facing an empty wallet.
Here is my gang of 1 plan.

Indeed, more and more I have become convinced Obama is deliberatly dragging this out so he can declare a default of the debt — or to make an ‘emergency executive fiat decree’ in which he allows himself to raise the limit and thus seize more power away from the Congress into his hands, where the Constitution clearly DOES NOT place it.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 11:49amFINALLY, the GOP gets the courage to stand up to this tyrant! Tell it like it REALLY IS! Obama WANTS to stall these talks, trying to “turn the tide” away from the conservative momentum! He will still lose in 2012.

Obama has manipulated the debate with NBC,CBS,ABC,CNN and MSNBC using deception and misrpresentation to distract, confuse and hide the reality of this situation.
We’re here because of government spending. 80% of the problem is Democratic actions and agendas. The mortgage meltdown was set up by Democrats and ACORN. The waste in government is the result of Justice Department bias and the incest of both parties.
There is no accountability in government when compared to the private sector. The waste in the federal budget is atleast 500 Billion per year – the duplication of agency services, the bloated salaries and the obscene benefits and pensions for public employees are all part of this problem.
It’s time to cut spending now – endure the real and trumped up hardships in the next 2 years – and then courageously elect a new president – who loves America and understands the difference between spending money that we don’t have and spending money we do . . . without giving money away with no requirements or accountability (Welfare, Food Stamps, Unemployment).
We need to have a safety net . . . that has limits, checks and audits, and requirements for personal responsibility.
God Bless the people who hold the values of the Tea Party as a guide for future action.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 11:47amThe Treasury Dept takes in close to 200 billion each and every month, and will be able to pay the “have to’s“ if ”I don’t pay my own taxes” Geitner will do it. The UN and 3rd world country give a ways will not get their money.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 11:53amYou’re thinking logically, stop that. The un and third world giveaways will be given out first. then the obummer vacation trip then the union payoffs, then democrat payoffs, then propaganda. Social security and medicare will not be paid and the admin will blame it on the republicans

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 11:52amIndeed, more and more I have become convinced Obama is deliberatly dragging this out so he can declare a default of the debt — or to make an ‘emergency executive fiat decree’ in which he allows himself to raise the limit and thus seize more power away from the Congress into his hands, where the Constitution clearly DOES NOT place it.
The more I puzzle this out, the more I keep coming to the conclusion there is a final power grab being made ready; we may be within a week to 10 days of a true tyranny rising in the nation.

Posted on July 23, 2011 at 12:05pm(This is interesting) From World Wide Words: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-bai1.htm
Q Where does the term baited breath come from, as in: ‘I am waiting with baited breath for your answer’?
A The correct spelling is actually bated breath but it’s so common these days to see it written as baited breath that there’s every chance that it will soon become the usual form, to the disgust of conservative speakers and the confusion of dictionary writers. Examples in newspapers and magazines are legion; this one appeared in the Daily Mirror on 12 April 2003: “She hasn’t responded yet but Michael is waiting with baited breath”.
It’s easy to mock, but there’s a real problem here. Bated and baited sound the same and we no longer use bated (let alone the verb to bate), outside this one set phrase, which has become an idiom. Confusion is almost inevitable. Bated here is a contraction of abated through loss of the unstressed first vowel (a process called aphesis); it means “reduced, lessened, lowered in force”. So bated breath refers to a state in which you almost stop breathing as a result of some strong emotion, such as terror or awe.

They are nothing but boot licking jar- heads and follow orders no matter what idiots. They are standing by as our country goes down the drain and they do NOTHING.
