Environmentalists Interrupt U.K. Energy Summit to Stage ‘Oil Orgy’

Yesterday, environmental activists spread oil on themselves and begin an “oil orgy” at an energy summit in protest of the United Kingdom’s opposition to European legislation that would “label tar sands oil as highly polluting.”

Canada has been lobbying for its role in providing a source of reliable and abundant energy through tar sands, a dense form of petroleum called bitumen mixed in sand and clay, for the last few years. Environmentalists oppose this form of oil due to higher emissions associated with extraction and burning, and support the European Union’s decision not to include it in its Europe’s Fuel Quality Directive. But, this proposal still needs approval from national governments, and the U.K. is not quite discounting tar sands as an option yet.

Watch as U.K. Tar Sands Network campaigner Emily Coats and climate campaigner Peter Templeton strip down to Union Jack boxers and maple leaf underwear to make their point at the 2011 London Energy Roundtable: Canada Europe Energy Summit:

“Oil Orgy” invades Energy Summit from You and I Films on Vimeo.

According to the video’s original posting on Vimeo, Coats says they interrupted the summit because the United Kingdom and Canadian governments were “developing into friends with benefits:”

“This seedy relationship puts profits for the oil industry and banks ahead of much needed legislation which will curb emissions from transport fuel in Europe,” she said.

Late last month, The Globe and Mail reported Prime Minister David Cameron’s administration as stating sand oils should not be ruled as too dirty, because the world will still need oil in the near future. On the flip side, environmentalists are advocating against tar sand as an oil source because of higher emissions and its representation of continued dependence on oil as opposed to greener fuels.

On the petroleum side: American domestic oil reserves off our coasts are estimated to be between 10 and 30 billion barrels. To put this in perspective, these reserves would run dry in 2-6 years, if we relied on them alone.

In contrast, American oil shale reserves in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah will, after whatever form of growing pains America is going to force itself to go through, provide this country’s petroleum for over two centuries. The oil is in the form of kerogen, a large hydrocarbon which can be broken down to create any type of fuel. This resource can be extracted safely from the ground for under $30 a barrel. The rumor that it takes any significant amount of water to do this is a lie.

I’m a little biased on as I have some technology which would help make this possible. Hey Glenn, I don’t know if you read these comments, but if you do, give me 30 minutes of your time and I’ll fly out and give you a presentation. I have credentials. We can make this work. You’ve got my email baby.

On the sociological side: Does this behavior remind anyone else of the Weimar Republic?

Being absolutely accurate in the current political environment is “tilting at windmills” how to overcome the irrational surge of the day is far beyond me. I can only hope there are inteliigent, rational, non-goverment parasites who can preserve the features of the US system. We must remember, only once in 5000 years of recorded history has there been a nation based on the principle of individual liberty, should it be lost it is totally irrational to assume it can be reclaimed.

Do they actually think ( ? do they think ) this lack of information will sway the intellectual citizens?

I have actually seen rhinos mating. I was about ten years old on a visit to a zoo along with around 40 other children. It occurred about 50 feet in front of us so nothing was left to the imagination. It was rather remarkable and the image has stayed with me close to 50 years. Our adult chaperones were speechless and, as I reflect on it even to this day, were apparently paralyzed as to what to do with the situation. Nothing was said about what we witnessed and we were ushered to the next exhibit after “it” was over. Yes, I have seen rhinos mating. Now, what were we talking about?

Yes. To review.. petroleum crude is a naturally occurring substance. It exists in the ground. It occasionally comes to the surface, sometimes in controlled pipelines, sometimes in uncontrolled seeps. Other things which are in the ground and frequently become comingled with the naturally occurring petroleum crude: limestone, sandstone, ocean water, freshwater, soil, sand.

The Canadian oil sands in southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba, et al. are one of those places where natural oil seeps have naturally saturated the natural ground matrix of sand… naturally. No one put the oil there. There was no oil spill. No pipeline burst. If mankind did nothing, the oil would stay where nature put it, effectively forever, contaminating the ground, and preventing animals and plants from using it for anything.

By surface mining the oil sands, extracting the crude, and leaving behind sand depleted of petroleum, the ground can be reclaimed from nature for nature. Woodlands and subarctic prairies can be planted where animals and people can go and live.

We a little clearer on what the issues with petroleum harvesting in North America, specificly Canada, are?
