EPA‘s New List Let’s You Find the Largest Greenhouse Gas Emitters Near You

For the first time, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data from the country’s largest emitters is being made easily accessible by a new tool on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s website.
With an interactive map stating the number of facilities emitting large amounts of GHGs and providing the names, locations and metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted by these facilities from nine industry groups, users can find out who is pumping large amounts of emissions into the atmosphere in their neighborhood.
“Thanks to strong collaboration and feedback from industry, states and other organizations, today we have a transparent, powerful data resource available to the public,” said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, in a press release. “The GHG Reporting Program data provides a critical tool for businesses and other innovators to find cost- and fuel-saving efficiencies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster technologies to protect public health and the environment.”
Here’s an example of what the map entails: I work remotely in Washington, D.C. metro area. Clicking on the closest dot of emitters to DC bumps the map in closer and closer until you can pick out the individual facilities in your area. The District holds five facilities considered large enough emitters for EPA to place on this map.
The largest emitter in the District is the Benning Generation Station at more than 219,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, followed by GSA Central Heating, Capitol Power Plant, George Washington University and the Pentagon.
NPR reports that EPA was “compelled by law” to provide this information to the public, which pollution-prevention advocacy groups state will give citizens the information they need to petition these facilities to reduce emission levels. But, NPR reports, that for many of the facilities whose main emission is carbon dioxide, often from burning coal, there may not be much they can do to curb it:
Carbon dioxide is not a byproduct of burning, like other pollutants. It’s the main product. So you can’t do much about it no matter how hard you try. You can’t put on scrubbers or emissions controls the way you can to limit mercury, sulfur gases and other byproducts.
A coal plant converted to burn natural gas could cut its carbon dioxide emissions in half, but at great expense. And in the long run it might be possible to capture and bury the carbon dioxide, but that technology is expensive and not ready for prime time.
From EPA’s GHG collection in 2010, the agency found that power plants were the largest stationary GHG emitters, followed by petroleum refineries. Of the GHGs emitted, carbon dioxide was the most prevalent (95 percent), then methane (4 percent) and nitrous oxide and flourinated gases (1 percent).
According to NPR, EPA’s facilities map accounts for half of the GHGs emitted each year in the U.S. The other half come from vehicles, planes and other operations that are smaller and not included in the map or EPA’s calculations.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 7:34pmThe USA is by far the cleanest country in the world next to maybe Argentina where no one lives. China and India are by far the biggest and dirtiest nations on the earth. They have the largest populations with nearly zero polution controls. Most of their vehicles run on diesel. They burn coal directly into the atmosphere at their plants. They dump waste wherever and whenever they please. Go to the subcontinent of Asia, you can barely breath the air there because it is so thick from all the polution. We in the US may drive more cars but our cars are nothing like the third world with most being strapped with every possible polution control devices. The greater use of fossil fuels in this country is no indication that we are in fact the biggest polluter.

Talk about a total waste in so many ways, and so destructive to our global environment for the reason you listed and more. On top of that, the ethanol destroys the biggest majority of vehicles it’s run in, and the only way to prevent that & the horrendous repair bills when you’ve not done enough, it to add to the fuel that which has been taken out of it. LUNACY!!! Now, want to talk about the big push for an electric vehicle? More lunacy since MOST electricity is produced by the burning of fossil fuels, that which the electric car is supposed to get around. Solar & wind power cannot in any shape, form, or fashion replace the burning of fossil fuels anytime in the near future….if ever. Besides, have you researched all the stimulus and other funds these alternate energy sources get of our tax dollars? And, think Solyndra!!!!

* Lift government roadblocks to the use of coal and nuclear power.

* Make tax credits available for the purchase and production of alternative fuel technologies.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 1:38pmWe just need to restore the EPA with common sense and remove all the Liberal, Democrat, and Progressive influence from both sides. The EPA serves a purpose to ensure companies follow logical rules and not to make them, like they are now. Some of the rules need to be repealed. We would be remiss in our duties to let companies police themselves. Some have shown in the past, they have no regard for the damage they cause, as greed overtakes their thinking process. There has to be some oversight, but not at the level we have now.
I mean who in there right mind fines companies for non-compliance on a non-existent fuel compound? Only a Liberal Communist could come up with this logic.

Report Post »Total free markets are very dangerous, look at the industrial revolution there were a lot of things that went horribly wrong before the free market could correct it. The EPA has done a few (very few) good things, while the concept is good the implementation was bad. EPA should not be able to make laws or regulations but enforce the ones that the law making branch(Legislative branch) makes. The purpose of having the Executive branch is law enforcement and running the Military(unless it’s the current admin), and you know what? EPA is part of the Executive Branch, if we can get the EPA doing it’s real job it would save a lot more time and a a good amount of money in the long run.

Posted on January 12, 2012 at 3:00pmgoahead
Report Post »You are correct. The EPA needs to be an enforcement agency, not a regulator. EPA’s purpose is to enforce the laws that are established by the elected officals that represent the people. The relationship between the EPA and the FEDS is exactly the same as the relationship a sheriff has with his community. The sheriff’s duty is to uphold, enforce and defend the laws of the community. Can you imagine how the community would react if the sheriff picked winners and losers by implementing his own regulations? It would be something like this: John Smith would have to pay a fee if he wanted to barbeque in his back yard, but John’s neighbor, Harry would not because he is close friends with the sheriff in addition Harry contributed to the sheriff’s campaign. There can not be an agency that forms policy if they are not beholden to the people. Nothing changes just because EPA originates out of Washington.

But I often have to go through background checks and other layers of security before gaining access to those facilities. I’m one of the good guys. The problem with this, is it gives information to the bad guys. Plant security and surrounding law enforcement agencies will need to be more aware of unauthorized “tourists”. I thought you guys in Homeland Security were smarter than this. I hope the EPA consulted with you before putting this out on the internet.
Also the line about “the public petitioning these plants to reduce emmissions” is pure BS! These plants are not going to change their operations because of public pressure. There is a lot more involved than just turning a valve or switch. The EPA needs to be slapped.

The biggest offender is the Government itself. With the wide spread spraying of aluminum and barium and other particulates (including bacterias and viruses) in the air, along with the use of HAARP which has the capabilities of taking the moisture completely out of the air. Talk about acid rain.
Chemtrails have been sprayed everyday over my city since I started watching daily on January 1st.
We have extreme weather conditions where there is “no” moisture to be had in the western part of the country. We have had some sprinkles of rain that have left a dirty white film all over everything.
We need to get a President in that will eliminate the EPA and the deliberate poisoning of our country.
