Eric Cantor Criticizes WH for Releasing Certificate: I Thought it Was a ‘Sideshow’

On Wednesday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) responded to Obama releasing his long-form birth certificate. According to him, the decision only makes the controversy an “issue.”
“If the White House press secretary says that this is a ‘sideshow,‘ why aren’t we treating it as such and dealing with the bigger issues?” he said. “This is an issue that does not belong in the debate, there are much more important issues for us to be dealing with, obviously.”

If someone brings a dish that needs to be put on the grill we should make room on the BBQ (such as other records like college, passports, SS cards, etc.). In the end, this man is a fraud and a liar and needs to go, however we can do it. One way, and the best way, is to counter his candidacy with a Constitutional loving person who will redirect this country back from the brink of disaster it is heading. IMHO, it is no DT by any stretch of the imagination. It could be, should be Allen West. That is probably not going to happen. Sooooo, we need to look at the reast in the field of possibilities. Keep your eyes on the Constitution, and the heart and character of possible candidates folks.

The requirements vary for each office but for president you must produce your birth certificate or a reasonable facsimile (such as the other type of birth certificate that was posted by Obama) He never needed to do so because IT WAS VERIFIED. This whole circus was unecessary from the get-go. That’s why progressives like me call it racist.

They are confused because it was acceptable when they enlisted, or were drafted. They are sent away and have to go on a wild goose chase…just to re-new their drivers license. That case turned on whether the Constitution conferred voting rights to women, which the court ruled it did not. The quotations from the case used here are not legally controlling since the set of facts are totally different. Moreover, that case would never be cited as authoritative on the question of how to define “natural born” for the purposes of the Constitutional requirement for President. In fact, the justice writing the opinion SPECIFICALLY DEFERRED ON THIS ISSUE:
“The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives, or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners. Some authorities go further and include as citizens children born within the jurisdiction without reference to the citizenship of their parents. As to this class there have been doubts, but never as to the first. For the purposes of this case it is not necessary to solve these doubts.”
To determine the meaning of natural born citizen for the purposes of the Presidency, a more authoritative source are the writings of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison at the time the Constitution was written. Hamilton, in an early version of the Constitution, wrote:
“No person shall be eligible to the office of President of the United States unless he be now a Citizen of one of the States, or hereafter be born a Citizen of the United States.”
Madison, meanwhile, clearly stated birth as the criterion of allegiance, which was the key issue that natural born requirement for the Presidency addressed. He wrote:
“It is an established maxim, that birth is a criterion of allegiance. Birth, however, derives its force sometimes from place, and sometimes from parentage; but, in general place is the most certain criterion; it is what applies in the United States.”
Also, unlike Minor, the Sailor’s Snug Harbor case dealt specifically with rights of citizenship (as opposed to voting rights of women pre-suffrage), and it held specifically that:
“Nothing is better settled at the common law than the doctrine that the children even of aliens born in a country while the parents are resident there under the protection of the government and owing a temporary allegiance thereto are subjects by birth.”
Another case, Wong Kim Ark, looked to English law to determine the original intent of natural born citizen and concluded:
“therefore every child born in England of alien parents was a natural-born subject, unless the child of an ambassador or other diplomatic agent of a foreign state, or of an alien enemy in hostile occupation of the place where the child was born.”

Then he puts it to rest, and it is a trivial side-show. When was Cantor criticizing the Birthers and telling them to focus on more important issues? Never. So now he looks like a hypocrite and a pandering partisan.
What is revealing is that Obama noted at the start of his press conference today that he couldn’t get a cut away from other news for the impotant topics like budget or foreign policy, but when he releases the birth certificate, suddenly they all break away. This suggests that the side show complaint should be leveled at the American people, not the President. The media are run by profit maximizing companies that will efficiently maximize ratings. Because the public finds Dancing with the Stars or Obama’s birth certificate more interesting than budget or foreign policy discussions, they will allocate precious airtime to the former and not the latter. So the people that are attacking the President ought to attack the voters and viewers. They are the reason we have the poor government and press that we do. Educate yourself. Demand better. The press and politicians will respond. But if you remain focused on circus nonsense, then this is what you will get: a country run like a country carnival.

In 1866 John Bingham, the author of the 14th Amendment, stated on the House floor:
“Every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen.”[1]
This definition was unchallenged during the heated debates ongoing at the time. The House floor is certainly the proper place for such debates but no objection was raised among the members, the consensus being that each agreed with the definition. In fact, the House of Representatives definition of a natural born citizen as one “born on U.S. soil of parents who are U.S citizens” still stands today, 145 years later.
The House of Representatives definition of a natural born citizen was affirmed in 2008 by Senate Resolution 511:
“Whereas John Sidney McCain, III, was born to American citizens on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That John Sidney McCain, III, is a `natural born Citizen’ under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States.”[2]
It’s interesting to note that former Senator Obama was a Cosigner of SR-511. Obama’s Kenyan father precluded his being a “natural born citizen” as required for eligibility to serve as President by the Constitution.

Mr. Cantor, please do your job as a Repub and call out Obama on his terrible policies and his lack of respect for the law as is vividly shown by his arrogance in defying the public by not showing his birth certificate. Obama thinks he is god and the Repubs better learn that he is not. Repubs should not be afraid and they should go for it. Trump is showing them how.

But if you dig down a little further than just the high profile races that made the headlines, you will find that your “beatdown” was a bit more severe than you noticed.

The Senate resolution on John McCain, which was meant only to cover his situation and not to disqualify people whose eligibility had never been questioned. If yo had read the whole thing you you would have seen that:

Obama was a cosponsor of the resolution! Do you really think that he would sponsor a resolution that said that he wasn’t qualified to run, or that anybody who wasn’t an idiot could misconstrue as saying that he wasn’t qualified to run?

That’s the definition of “natural born citizen.” It’s in the Constitution. That would be the 14th Amendment. And that’s just what John Bingham said in your quote. Different words, same thing.
