Eric Cantor ‘Increasingly Concerned’ About Occupy ‘Mobs’, Jay Carney Blasts ‘Hypocrisy’

Eric Cantor: Increasingly Concerned About Occupy Wall Street MobsHouse Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) decried the “growing mobs” of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and took a swipe at his fellow political leaders who have praised the demonstrations.

“If you read the newspapers today, I, for one, am increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country,” Cantor said. “And believe it or not, some in this town have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans. But you sent us here to fight for you and all Americans.”

Cantor’s remarks at the conservative Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. Friday came one day after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the protesters and said, “God bless them.” President Barack Obama also commended them and said they were expressing the frustrations of the American people.

According to Reuters, Cantor’s remarks did not elicit a major reaction from the audience.

In response to Cantor’s remarks, White House press secretary Jay Carney said he “sense[d] a little hypocrisy unbound“ and called the ”Occupy“ protests ”an expression of democracy…totally consistent with the American democratic tradition.”

“I don’t understand why, you know, one man’s mob is another man’s democracy,” Carney said.

Carney pointed that Cantor praised then-new Tea Party protests at the same conference two years ago.

During his 2009 speech, Cantor praised Tea Party activists for “fighting on the fighting lines of what we know is a battle for our democracy.”

There are no comparisons that one can make in relation to the Tea Party gatherings and goals for our country. Limited Government and free markets vs Unlimited Government and communism.       How many arrests have occurred in the past 2 YEARS at Tea Party gatherings? How many arrests have occurred in the PAST 2 WEEKS with this MOB?

      Here is the difference.
      -The Tea Party people did not get arrested in large #s like the “Occupy Wall Street” crowd
      - The Tea party is advocating voting bad politicians out of office
      - Many Elements of the “Occupy Wall Street” crowd advocate violence implicitly & explicitly

      I guess you were provoked by the fact – didn’t you know it? – that Bush ignored laws passed by Congress that he didn’t agree with. You thought that Obama was doing something unprecedented, something that proved he’d assummed dictatorial powers. I appreciate that you actually did some research before responding the second time after your knee jerk first post.

      But as I said, I didn’t take a position on signing statements.

      You are over the top with your accusations: “The Congressional Democrats are in love with any leftist revolutionary in South or Central America not matter how vile.”

      That kind of language, that Democrats “love any leftist revolutionary” may pass for an intelligent, objective evalution in your sphere, but to me it sounds silly. And off-topic, given we were talking about signing statements. Something I didn’t take a position on.

    I don’t recall any Tea Party protestors being arrested, and I also recall that the areas where they protested were always left cleaner than they were when the protesters first got there.
    I also don’t recall business owners complaining, repairing restrooms, or buying locks be because of the Tea Party.
    Seems to me that these Wall Street socialists are NOT comparable to the Tea Party protests, just saying.

      As my old Dad used to say, (c.1955) “What this country needs is a good dictator, a benevolent dictator.” Right, Dad. Where do you plan to find one? We have a CEO/CIC who ignores laws, a judiciary who doesn’t hesitate to legislate, and a legislative branch who’s so busy making stupid laws and too lazy to delete the thousands of bad laws on the books, we actually do need a wise, benevolent dictator to set things straight, surrounded by selfless, wise advisors. Instead we have more of a despot. And a nation of easily gulled voters. Our government schools (not “public” schools anymore; we’ve had next-to-no say in running them for decades) graduate a million new voters annually, most of whom are MSM sheep. Any correcting we do has to begin there; otherwise any good we do now will be shortly overturned by them. So, why do conservative leaders not focus on this? And why is voter fraud not a priority anywhere? I’ve repeatedly asked Rep Bachmann to address this with NO answer yet…

    All of that talk about the Democrat’s “democracy” is making me vomit. We don’t live in a democracy, but a constitutional republic… something our politicians, and the state-sponsored terrorists known as public teachers want us to forget.

      I keep hearing this “we don’t live in a democracy, we live in a republic” talking point. If you studied any political philosophy, you’d know that a republic IS a form of democracy. They aren’t mutually exclusive as you folks keep framing them to be. We live in a democracy. The specific FORM of democracy we live in is a constitutional republic.

      The founders didn’t want a direct democracy. they feared it would lead to mob rule. the form of democracy they chose was a representative democracy (A republic).

      If you keep ignoring the difference between a DIRECT democracy & a REPRESENTATIVE democracy by calling them talking points, I wonder what your purpose at this site is?

      Linen killed few millions (about 5) of kulaks, who were not nobility & not bankers. Stalin carried on & killed millions of Ukranians (~7). They starved while he exported wheat to obtain CAPITOL. Stalin killed 20 to 30 million in his purges.

My “socialist/communist system” works by applying the concept of political democracy to economics. We will achieve democratic control of the means of production by putting the control of the firms and factories into the hands of the workers themselves – not in the hands of capitalists or government bureaucrats. Why do you think the Left is organizing into these occupations, and not rallying to re-elect Obama? We’re no more interested in state control of the economy than you are, comrade.

      You’re arguing nonsensical semantics. A “republic” (at least the definition of the word you’re using) is literally a representative democracy. Everyone votes, democratically, for a handful of individuals to represent them. The difference between the words “democracy” and “republic” depend only on how you’re define them. Otherwise, it’s meaningless.

      Also, I‘m unsure why you think I’m a 24-year-old French girl, but I’m amused by it. Where the hell did you learn how to do research?

      The pictures of these occupants remind me of the scenes from “Walker Texas Ranger” when he’d go down among the homeless and bag ladies etc. in Dallas. The difference was that most of them were old, alcoholics or veterans according to the story lines. Those who’d made major mistakes living there lives, and he’d always find at least one to take back, help them clean up and get a place to live and a job. THIS IS THE STORYLINE IN REVERSE….these are young, out to make their mistakes (and embracing the chance) and giving up warm places to live and the possibility for finding jobs by destroying the businesses whe create them.

      This is the only thing that you have said that is truthful & that we could discuss. Now we could discuss specifics like reinstating “the uptick rule”, whether investment banks & other banks should have had the wall of separation removed, or capital requirement & leverage ratio permissible.
      Some of these have been discussed by Jerry Doyle & Mike Savage. I can’t recall if Glenn has, but I remember him being ahead of the curve about the coming financial crisis.

      Permits can be onerous. They have been used to squelch dissent.

      Maybe they are also used so that commerce can keep going & the majority is not held hostage by the minority. It would be very easy for the minority to bring traffic to a stand still (think of the extra carbon emissions & cost)

      What if a minority blocked bridges or major thorough fares every day. Many people would not have the opportunity to FREELY conduct businesses for restaurants, hot dog vendors & everyone else.
      How about emergency vehicles, ambulance or fire trucks, going to where they needed? Are they going to go by the shortest route or by the route that protesters allow them.

      BTW I know of a famous hotdog stand that became regional restaurant chain. So go ahead sneer.

All I have to say to all the ‘Tea Party recruiters’, whether you are one of them or not, is the enemy of my enemy is NOT my friend. They do not want to expel corruption or clean up congress or prosecute the bad bankers. They want to collapse the entire system as in see ya later Constitution, Liberty, Freedom, Capitalism and any semblance of our way of life. Now, if you feel the need to join in with them, by all means, knock yourself out, but don‘t be surprised when things don’t turn out quite the way you thought it would with your new buddies.
