Eric Holder to NAACP: ‘I Will Not Allow the Texas Voter ID Law to Happen’

(The Blaze/AP) – Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday he opposes a new photo ID requirement in Texas elections because it would be harmful to minority voters and told the NAACP in Houston that he will do everything he can to make sure the law doesn’t stand.
He added the Justice Department “will not allow political pretexts to disenfranchise American citizens of their most precious right.”
Under the law passed in Texas, Holder said that “many of those without IDs would have to travel great distances to get them — and some would struggle to pay for the documents they might need to obtain them.”
“We call those poll taxes,” Holder added spontaneously, drawing applause as he moved away from the original text of his speech with a reference to a fee used in some Southern states after slavery’s abolition to disenfranchise black people.
The 24th amendment to the constitution made that type of tax illegal. Holder insinuated the voter ID laws were racist numerous times throughout his speech.
“I will not allow the Texas Voter ID law to happen,” said Holder.

During his short address, America’s top cop took aim at The Lone Star State saying that the law to ensure elections are secure in Texas was “absurd.” Holder received cheers saying that the ID law hurts minorities and that politics is the driving force behind the issue.
Not surprising but Eric Holder, the first African American attorney general of the United States, was received extraordinarily well by the delegates at the NAACP. After he wrapped-up his remarks, the NAACP delegates passed an “emergency resolution” that resolved the organization and its members to “strongly support” the attorney general’s efforts, especially with regards to voting rights.
As the attorney general left the stage, he was sent off with a standing ovation and chants of “Holder! Holder! Holder!”

Holder spoke a day after a trial started in federal court in Washington over the 2011 law passed by Texas’ GOP-dominated Legislature that requires voters to show photo identification when they get to the polls.
Under Texas’ law, Holder noted, a concealed handgun license would serve as acceptable ID to vote, but a student ID would not. He went on to say that while only 8 percent of white people do not have government-issued photo IDs, about 25 percent of black people lack such identification.
“I don’t know what will happen as this case moves forward, but I can assure you that the Justice Department’s efforts to uphold and enforce voting rights will remain aggressive,” the attorney general said.
Holder said the arc of American history has always moved toward expanding the electorate and that “we will simply not allow this era to be the beginning of the reversal of that historic progress.”

The attorney general spoke at the 103rd convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which is launching a battle against new state voter ID laws. NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous has likened the fight against conservative-backed voter ID laws passed in several states to “Selma and Montgomery times,” referring to historic Alabama civil rights confrontations of the mid-1960s.
Holder, the first black man named U.S. Attorney General, was received with resounding applause, a standing ovation and chants of “Holder, Holder, Holder” at the convention.
Those chants quickly changed to “stand your ground, stand your ground,” a reference to a Florida law that neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman is using to defend fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager he encountered while patrolling his community in February. Police did not initially arrest or charge Zimmerman, saying the “stand your ground” law allowed self-defense. He was later charged with second-degree murder.
Holder said the Justice Department under his leadership has taken unprecedented steps to study and prevent violence against youth and address the high homicide rate among young black men.
Finally, the attorney general noted with pride that the U.S. Supreme Court in two recent rulings regarding President Barack Obama’s health care law and immigration laws passed in Arizona, largely supported the federal government and the Department of Justice. However, he said, he remained concerned that Arizona law enforcement, under the portion of the law upheld by the court, would be able to check the immigration status of any person suspected of being in the United States illegally.
Going back to the common theme that voter ID laws are inherently racist, Holder added: ”No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like.”

But, I am not sure what the b as tid is talking about because I have to show a drivers license to vote in Indiana and he has not come to stop this in Indiana. He only wants to make sure that in places were loads of illegals and criminals are that they can leverage those ILLEGAL votes to their benefit.

The Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ruled on April 28, 2008, in “Crawford et.al.vs Marion County Elections Board” by a 6-3 decision that a state can require government issued ID to be presented at the time you go and vote. Holder’s claim that this amounts to a poll tax is as stupid as this whole administration, since the SCOTUS also ruled, as did lower courts, that this does not amount to a poll tax.
Isn’t it funny that Holder claims people are too poor to obtain govt issued ID, but he doesn’t address the fact that those same people have their govt issued ID to buy their alcohol, cash checks, open accounts at banks and department stores, etc.
Holder is simply a moron who, along with Obama, needs to be arrested, tried, convicted, and executed for TREASON against the United States!!!

The old? Really? They have to have ID to get their bank accounts where their SS cheques are deposited. The minorities? The poor? They don’t have ID? Many to most states provide that for free, and there’s a DMV in walking distance to pretty much every neighborhood. The poor, if they collect one government cheque, have ID. This has nothing to do with any of the distractions you posit. It has to do with trying to stop the Left from committing voter fraud.

You can’t drive,get insurance,a place to live,can’t purchase alcohol or tobacco, but you can vote if you don’t have an ID. Damn people what kind of system do you think that promotes if you don’t even have to show a freaking ID to vote. Hell I might just go on down to the voting booth and vote all day since they aren‘t going to be checking ID’s. PS. I’d encourage you to use the Googles and find evidence of voter fraud in Pennsylvania for example. Good luck with that. That’s not why they passed the voter ID law, they aren‘t trying to address a problem that doesn’t exist. They’re trying to reduce the number of Democratic voters. In the words of PA House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny), “Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”

I knew all the folks down tghere but we still had to show photo Id – drivers license ibn our case. We had good electronic machines in 2008 and had no hanging chads or someone to figure out how we were voting. We now have brand new machines that read no mater which way you put it in. I guess Holder will be after us also.

He obviously did NOT try to find a way to make it work. I was adopted at six and did not have a birth certificate at the age of twenty four I applied to the state (Oregon) paid 25 bucks and got my birth certificate so I could get a passport. This is total BS.

Though I loathed the hate groups, I understood their message. The separatists just wanted to be left alone and free from government oppression and the illegal tax code. They are not all just a bunch of backward, prejudiced, rednecks. They had some forethought, but at the time I thought they were crazy. A race war? Financial collapse? Illegal taxes? Forced diversity in the military? Letting illegals vote in a Presidential election? Gays pushing their agenda into the public schools and diminishing the sacred definition of marriage? An AG who tries to reduce and remove Fourth Amendment rights from Americans? A President who becomes a dictator? The complete destruction of what the Christian founders envisioned and wrote in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? Pick a reason for another revolution.

Posted on July 10, 2012 at 5:17pmHmm. I filled out a form and received my voter registration card. I don’t recall I had to show an ID to get it, but it’s been over twelve years, so I may have shown my driver’s license.
One way we make NAACP and Holder eat their words, is to offer in the areas they claim will have trouble and offer rides to the DMV and/or help them pay for an ID.
Frankly, if I was a black, I’d be pissed because Holder and NAACP are saying you are too stupid to get an ID. As far as illegals, we already know they want them to vote.

I missed out on the free deal for my daughter but we paid all of $8 to get it. If someone is so poor that they can’t afford $8 most likely they get government assistance. Guess what, you are required to have IDs to get that and proof of where you live. How many of the “poor” have cell phones, cable tv, cars, and all the luxuries of life? By the way, though TN got the Voter thing right they still don’t get it. They offer cell phones for people on government assistance. Gimme a break!
But if that is not enough then I say change the tax forms. The spot where it says do you want to donate $3 to the presidential campaign fund – change that to the poor pitiful you fund for Voter IDs. I will gladly check YES on that box.

Despite all of the money dumped into the educational system, Texas leads the country with the most high school drop-outs (per capita) and scores almost dead last on their SATs. Sounds like a college grad could move to Texas and the sky would be the limit, right? Wrong, because despite being very business friendly, Texas has a notoriously corrupt judicial system and an inept law enforcement agency that seeks out to terrorize its citizenry with direct and indirect taxation via fines, penalties, etc. If Texans were to clean up their state (oh yeah, they also have the highest air pollution), then maybe I would take y’all more seriously.

The previous company that I had worked for just went belly up during the Clinton admin. Anyway, I had to provide a driver’s license, my retiree military ID as a second form of photographic ID, as well my SSN card, and they requested to see my birth certificate. I had that along with my international shot records in a folding pouch in my back pocket. I was hired on the spot over everybody else.
