‘Escalate Action’: Big Labor Co-Opts MLK Jr’s Legacy, Rallies for Collective Bargaining at 100+ ‘We Are One’ Protests

Across the country today, labor organizers and activists are holding hundreds of “We Are One” rallies and ‘teach-ins’ to defend the collective bargaining rights of union members. “I stand in solidarity with teachers, firefighters, nurses and all under attack by governors and state legislatures,” is the rallying tweet of the AFL-CIO, an organization heavily involved with the We Are One rallies.
According to the We Are One website, the activists chose today (April 4th) for their rallies because that is the day, over fifty years ago, that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, where he had gone to stand with sanitation workers demanding their dream: The right to bargain collectively for a voice at work and a better life. The workers were trying to form a union with AFSCME.
Are the unions co-opting MLK Jr’s legacy?
Absolutely says one black reverend. “I believe that Dr. King is turning over in his grave today,” says one reverend who says that he was born on an Alabama plantation. Speaking on the Neil Cavuto show, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson observes, “I participated in the civil rights movement, I did sit-ins…for Jesse Jackson and others to take [MLK Jr's] movement, to take his purpose and use it for personal gain, I have to say Neil, is nothing less than evil. Dr. King would not agree with this.”
Nonetheless, We Are One activists are rallying today in the name of Dr. King:
Join us in solidarity with working people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and dozens of other states where well-funded, right-wing corporate politicians are trying to take away the rights Dr. King gave his life for: the freedom to bargain, to vote, to afford a college education and justice for all workers, immigrant and native-born. It’s a day to show movement. Teach-ins. Vigils. Faith events. A day to be creative, but clear: We are one.
The We Are One materials, as evidenced by the last paragraph above, contain a palpable animus towards all-things Republican.

The attacks on workers’ rights in Wisconsin and across the country and the tremendous uprising of grassroots activism in response provide us with the best opportunity in decades to seize the momentum and the national debate. Turning the challenge of the Republican, right-wing and corporate attacks into opportunities for movement building will take education, coalition building and action. While this “Wisconsin Moment” started with politicians’ attacks on public workers and their ability to collectively bargain, it should be no surprise that the same politicians (backed by CEOs and corporations that funded their election campaigns) are attacking decent wages, unions and programs that help working families in every form. They are coming after Project Labor Agreements, prevailing wages and infrastructure funding while backing destructive measures like so-called “right to work” and paycheck deception. And many of them are the same people who are attacking voting rights for students, working to make higher education less affordable by raising tuition and cutting financial aid and opposing the simple fairness of the DREAM Act.
As mentioned, part of the We Are One protests involves a “teach-in” component at university and college campuses nationwide. These teach-ins, I think, are supposed to elicit memories of the late 1950s-early 1960s “sit ins.” The union members, I suppose, feel that the right to collective bargaining is analagous to the basic civil rights that black Americans were brutally denied in an earlier period of our country’s history. Whether that analogy holds any water or not–I don’t think it does–is a topic for another day. For now, what’s interesting to note is the warlike language the teach-in organizers are using:
Wall Street Banks, American corporations and their political allies have declared a one-sided war on the American people. This war is being waged at our schools and colleges, on public employee unions, in our workplaces and in our communities.
- Workers’ Rights as Human Rights: The State of Our Freedom to Join Unions and Bargain Collective
- The Republican Attack on Workers’ Rights and Collective Bargainin
- The Real Roots of the Great Recession and State Fiscal Problem [editor's note: corporate greed alert!!!]
- Political Action: How Students, Teachers and Other Workers are Fighting Back
This is not about the budget—it is more of the same old politics.
This is political payback to corporate CEOs who spent more than $1 billion to elect politicians last fall. While we suffer, the same politicians support tax breaks for corporations and ceos.
These same politicians are attacking voting rights for students, working to make higher education less affordable by raising tuition and cutting financial aid and opposing the simple fairness of the DREAM Act.
We need to focus on creating jobs and restoring the middle class. Our firefighters, teachers, college faculty and nurses are critical members of our community. Corporations are trying to weaken or eliminate workers’ freedom to join unions and bargain so workers can’t serve as a check on corporate greed to restore balance
Glenn Beck will be covering the rallies on his show this evening.

If we were “one” – we’d all be communists.
If we were “one” – you wouldn’t be bankrupting part of us and the state with unsustainable benefits and salaries.
This person of “one” can’t afford you and yours and detests the fact you use your dues to elect/hire your own officials. This person of “one” doesn‘t think that’s Democracy. That‘s just having a bigger paid mouth that doesn’t care if it bankrupts people and the state.
Whoever told you you could have it all …….lied to you just to get your bucks. Think California and Illinois.
You’re not working in sweatshops anymore – get over yourselves. The world isn’t just about “you”.
And as to the so-called boycotting – a lot of us consider that old time Chicago Mob bullying and “insurance”. It makes a lot of us turn more against you ever single day. Stop picking on the little guys/gals you darned, greedy, bullies. Any respect I had for you is now totally gone.

If they want to unionize and try to rape companies (which they have ruined many of them) for obscene pay and pension benefits, fine, private companies can either put up with them or go out of business. But public employees have a duty to the taxpayer, like it or not, and they should never have the option to strike…police and fire people????…it just doesn’t make sense. Report Post »“What I’m saying to you this morning is that communism forgets that life is individual. Capitalism forgets that life is social, and the kingdom of brotherhood is found neither in the thesis of communism nor the antithesis of capitalism but in a higher synthesis. It is found in a higher synthesis that combines the truths of both. Now, when I say question the whole society, it means ultimately coming to see that the problem of racism, the problem of exploitation, and the problem of war are all tied together. These are the triple evils that are interrelated.”

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 6:54pmAs an x- union member I can sympathize with why these folk don’t understand what is going on. They work hard, most do, for a fair wage, a wage that far exceeds what is paid their nonunion counterparts. They fear losing the ability to earn that wage, as well as the meger contributions to their retirements that they have made. I understand, but I also know proper education into the facts about what is being reconsidered about PUBLIC sector unions needs be understood by these men and women. Sadly that proper vision, that information will NEVER come from their unions, nor even more egregiously from a media seeming he// bent on being culpable in the destruction of America.
Like sheep led to their slaughter, these well intended, but mal informed union members rally to the demise of America, and their own jobs. Short sighted, again I say no, deliberately misinformed and to their own future consternation.
But we here at the blaze are miss focused as well if we don’t question everything. If we choose a narrow focus instead of believing anything is possible as to the drivers of the evil agenda we see playing out before our eyes. We KNOW that the Islamists are using the unions, and shall endeavor to consume them once the overthrow of America and Isreal is complete. We know that the socialist’s are using both the unions and the Islamists and plan the demise of the same, after America and Isreal……..But whom is pulling the puppets strings, it must be someone or some group with greater wealth and power than all of the groups it is controlling, combined. It must remain hidden, by subterfuge subverting, infiltrating, manipulating and denying involvement.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 7:55pm@BETTERDAYS, I totally agree with your comments. Trouble is, I think that these idiots will end up winning in the end, and it will be to their own detriment. They (public employee unions) forget who pays their wages. Folks out here are hurting. Gas went up another 10 cents a gallon, of course none of us got a raise to accomodate it. A block of Velveeta cheese has gone up $1 since Christmas time…and everything else also..that is just something that I saw this weekend. I think that these people will not be happy until NO ONE has a job, and no one can afford to eat, and even if you have a JOB, you won’t be able to afford the gas to get there. Private company unions are one thing…Public unions are a whole nuther animal.
My husband is a Union member. He works for a private company and is a member of Steelworkers. Crappy Union so far as we are concerned, but that’s beside the point. He’s worked all kinds of crazy shifts and had many changes over the 30 plus years for the company, but when they go to work, if a 10 hour shift, or a 12 hour shift, they have certain jobs to do. When they are done, if it takes all day, it takes all day, and if it doesn’t, they spend the rest of the time reading a book, or the paper or playing dominos. I am sure you get the picture? I told my husband that I KNEW he didn’t work much when he tells me how many books he read this week…As a State employee, summers we worked hard for State Parks. More to do than time to do it, but in the winter, after camping season, not much. I have gone to work for 8 hours, worked 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the day playing Trivial Pursuit and jacks and balls sitting in the middle of the office floor with my co-worker. Of course our State does not have UNIONS either. Sure, some of these people work, but let me tell you, those of us working in “small business” humping it each day to get the jobs out in order to please our customers, we sure don’t have slack time. We keep our jobs because we are good at them, because we work hard for what we get, and our employers would not even THINK of getting rid of us…it would be a great loss to them. The Union stuff just ticks me off. I’m not stupid..I’ve seen it and lived it, and folks we can’t afford it anymore. Keep it up and NO one will have a job, we’ll all be on the government dole, and who’s gonna pay the taxes to keep us?

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 7:56pmI understand your view, and I agree with you…to a point. Those union members are no more asleep than all of us were three years ago. Barack Obama’s run was like a big red “CAPE” to me, much more than a red flag! Too little experience, too little background information, too much money, too little in common with my values. We all have really worked to educate ourselves and get involved to try to get our country back on the right track. Knowledge didn’t just fall into our lap–you can’t zone out every night in front on the TV set watching sports or sitcoms.
Report Post »These union members must realize all the money the union bosses are spending on all these rallies, protests, political bribes….they must know that their pensions are only 50-60% funded and none of this money is going into their pensions. But, bottom line, as you said yourself, “They work hard, most do, for a fair wage, a wage that far exceeds what is paid their nonunion counterparts”. We are taught to love our neighbors as ourselves…so greed for themselves has become more important than thinking about possible hardships their neighbors are going through for them to receive that wage!

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 9:44pmThanks for your replies everybody, I had to reassess some of the things I wrote and I do recall that working as an Iron worker that once the “ quota” or “ job list” was completed, we played quarter bounce ( always good for an extra fifty a week, thanks for the memories Kenny). So I guess we did not work that hard. Didn’t save my job though, the second NAFTA came about all those union jobs went to Mexico. My union, didn’t put up a single bit of a fight either, just wanted our “dues”.
Report Post »I do recall that their were some who worked more than they were required too, they never moved up, sorry swampy I have to disagree with you on that.
In general I have found that employers representatives ( stewards, managers….) seem intimidated by someone who is capable of multitasking, and is a strong communicator. But that’s another subject for another day.
I also still stand by my assumption of ignorance on the part of many union members, denial is only discovered when it’s lost. Did we become suddenly informed by the lame stream media? No way, it was sensing something was wrong and striking out on our own to seek answers, which lead us to Glenn, Fox, and the constant use of a wide range of resource mterials by which we got educated and continue to educate ourselves, our families and neighbors. Having been in the union comfort zone, I speak from experience, the common worker does not seek out answers.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 7:19pmIf MLK Jr. was alive today he would be leading the protests against the Tea-Party backed GOP’s assault on the American worker.
Martin Luther King, Jr.:
In our glorious fight for civil rights, we must guard against being fooled by false slogans, as ‘right-to-work.‘ It provides no ’rights‘ and no ’works.’ Its purpose is to destroy labor unions and the freedom of collective bargaining… We demand this fraud be stopped. —Speaking on right-to-work laws in 1961
“The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress. Out of its bold struggles, economic and social reform gave birth to unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, government relief for the destitute and, above all, new wage levels that meant not mere survival but a tolerable life. The captains of industry did not lead this transformation; they resisted it until they were overcome. When in the thirties the wave of union organization crested over the nation, it carried to secure shores not only itself but the whole society.” Martin Luther King Jr.
—Speech to the state convention of the Illinois AFL-CIO, Oct. 7, 1965

Hey lefties- stop hijacking the dream! And remember this time around in 2012- “judge a man by the content of his character, and not by the color of his skin.” (Thats Dr.Martin Luther King- in case you didnt know that.) Just a friendly reminder.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 7:46pmDo the idiots in the union movement know the story of Martin Luther King ? King was corrupt,a womanizer that liked young girls and was financed by the communist party. The powers to be at the time decided he was a liability to the civil rights agenda and took him out.Better a dead martyr/hero than a convict. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was forced by the justice department to seal his files for 50 years.Yes ,people you can read the whole sick story in 2027. So you union chiefs are you also financed by the commies, who are you going to sacrifice for your agenda. You know the feds are also watching you.You can dodge it till 1/20/12, then the conservatives take over and it will be payback time….

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 8:51pmIt has become clear today that if we are to save the Republic from threats both foreign and domestic the people need to speak up and stand their ground. So this is my stand! We can all agree that Mr. Spooky dude is one of the biggest if not the biggest threat to America! I say this with this with both confidence and firmness… If the tax exempt form “501 c3” is removed from George Soros, the flow of money will be disrupted almost immediately once the form has been taken away. All of the evil organizations usually have two elements in common 1. George Soros and 2. The 501 c3 tax exemption form. As long as this form is allowed to exist they can keep on shuffling people around when they’re “humanitarian aid cover” is blown without monetary loss. This form “501 c3” also aids in us funding our own demise! Our enemies are being funded with OUR tax payer money. It is covenant that the form “501 c3” also allows religious organizations operate without having to pay taxes. It is nothing more than a dead baby rootean to make sure that no one would ever challenge the forms purpose! When we pull this root out it will hurt a lot people and organizations but I fear not doing so we are almost fighting a loosing battle against our enemies. Remember, we can always make a new bill designed especially for religious tax exemption purposes. Either way the form “501 c3” MUST go! When trouble shooting any problem it is always necessary to find a common denominator, in this case it is the “501 c3” tax exemption and George Soros. See for yourself by following the link provided below to make the obvious connections.
Discover The Net Works.org
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/funderProfile.asp?fndid=5181
Here you will find a complete list of all the organizations George Soros’ Open Society has monetary connections to and more.
Simply click on the organization’s name or type the organization’s name into a search engine of your choice then once on a website look for the “DONATE NOW” button to see if the organization is indeed a “501 c3” form. By American law any organization using the “501 c3” form has to disclose that they are using it.
The time to act is NOW please look it up for your selves until you believe what is true and contact your congressmen to act on repealing the “501 c3” form NOW before the enemy has time to stop it!
This could be our chance to kick Mr. Spooky dude in the nuts!
Also, I use the website “Muckety” to make sound connections between my suspicions.

Report Post »Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Re: Romans 13
The governing authority here in the United States is the Constitution, NOT Obama. He is the one that is in violation of the Scriptures. IMHO, God gave us a Republic, (self rule), and Obama took an oath to protect the Republic. He is in violation. If that was not true, then the American Revolution would have been wrong and you should still consider yourself a British subject.

Posted on April 5, 2011 at 5:05pmIs there no limit how far some will stoop to try and get their way in an argument. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t die to protect or promote unions or union workers. MLK died for civil rights and racial equality in the USA. Labor unions have become what they originally united against, repression of the workforce in the workplace. Now the unions are the repressors and the workplaces are the repressed victims. An American worker should have the freedom of choice whether or not he or she wants to be a union member in order to obtain and maintain their employment.
