BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — An ESPN anchor has apologized for taking copy from a newspaper column and passing it off as his own.
ESPNews anchor Will Selva apologized Wednesday for using words from a column by Kevin Ding of the Orange County Register to narrate highlights of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game Tuesday night against San Antonio.
The network says Selva came across the story while researching local stories to use as background. He pasted the story into his script, but never wrote his own words before reading it on air.
Selva says he “made a horrible mistake” in a statement put out by ESPN. Spokesman Josh Krulewitz says Selva called Ding to express remorse.
Krulewitz didn’t say if Selva was suspended, but said “we’ve taken appropriate action.”

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 1:46pmfor people saying this is not a big deal for a journalist to use someone else’s writing without acknowledging it, you are very wrong. as a communications major, the first thing we are told never to do is plagiarize. if it is revealed that you have plagiarized, your credibility is lost and the credibility of a journalist’s written word is all they have. also, as a student, if i plagiarize the college has the authority to remove me from the school as academic punishment if they so decide. plagiarism is a heavy crime in the world of academia and journalism. it is something that can cost you a shot at your diploma or a paycheck when you hit the real world.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 12:11pmHow pathetic. His excuse is pathetic as well. Even if he did what he intended which was to take an article somebody else wrote and put it in his own words it’s still sad and lacking in integrity.
You’re a journalist, albiet a sports journalist, but a journalist nonetheless. Taking somebody elses work and simply adjusting a few words to make it your own is still extremely sad and pathetic. They should hire the columnists who’s work you steal on a daily basis and get rid of you.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 10:41amWhy didn’t he simply give credit to the writer or ask beforehand if he could quote him? I would be this happens frequently but we never hear about it.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 9:28amSeems to be the norm anymore. Do something wrong, say “I’m Sorry” and everything is forgiven and all better. To many journalists, reporters politicians and others have committed crimes and simply said I’m sorry and then expected everyone to say “Oh, that’s okay. It’s all better now.” What a wimpy society where people don’t hold others responsible for their actions.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 10:39amGreat point. A sports anchor used 2 sentences from a blog he was pulling info from. Used the words exactly and expects to be able to just say sorry! He should be murdered! right? But then if he was murdered, Obama would get blamed for being a “dictator” but because Carlson Tucker says someone should be murdered its ok? republicons are so transparent. If it fits my narrative I am for it, If it conlicts my narrative im against it. Facts are useless. HE PLAGARISED 2 SENTANCES, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT! If julian Assange WAS executed the same people calling the president soft now would be calling him a dicator then, saying “if he doesnt like you he kills you” Socialist!! Get some consistency people.

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 10:30amEspecially if Fox is doing the reporting. Because at Fox, you can ASK the pres a question then spend the day criticising him for “butting in”, then pull facts from a pakistani blog saying his trip cost 200 million a day, criticise him for that, find out your wrong, never make a correction and repeat the next day. LUCKILY FOR THEM THEY CAN RELY ON WILLFULLY IGNORANT VIEWERS LIKE YOU! (want to see bias, ill show you a story about a sports journalist and show you a bunch of people who find a way to hate the president for it)

Posted on December 30, 2010 at 8:07amI agree with CONSERVATIVEME, professional basketball has gone the way of Jersey Shore, it’s a drama queen paradise. I don’t care about Kobe, LeBron, or any of them. But, let’s stop the world from turning when Mr. James decides to move from Cleveland to Miami. Who can blame him, it’s COLD in Cleveland. When Michael Jordan retired after the second Chicago Bulls “three peat,” NBA basketball became incidental to me.

Report Post »Sports has become all about corrupt business and its lost a tremendous amount of respect and interest from the viewing fans. So who cares about an anchor repeating a few words someone else already said?
