ESPN ‘Parts Ways’ With Hank Williams Jr. – ‘Monday Night Football’ Theme No More

ESPN has announced that it parted ways with Hank Williams Jr. after comments he made that involved a “Hitler” analogy earlier this week. The channel has permanently removed the “Monday Night Football” theme Williams performed for the show for over 20 years.

(Watch Glenn Beck’s passionate defense of Williams)
“We have decided to part ways with Hank Williams, Jr,” ESPN said on its website. “We appreciate his contributions over the past years. The success of Monday Night Football has always been about the games and that will continue.”
The decision may sound mutual, but Williams offered another perspective on his website.
“After reading hundreds of e-mails, I have made MY decision,” he wrote. “By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. It’s been a great run.”
Williams’s Spokesman Kirt Webster said Williams made the decision Wednesday night, while the network said it informed Williams of the move Thursday morning.
Regardless of whose call it was, one of sports‘ and entertainment’s most visible partnerships is over. The song had been a “Monday Night Football” staple since 1989 and survived the game’s switch of networks from ABC to cable a few years ago.
It was originally yanked on Monday after Williams’s comments went viral.
The song is based on Williams’ hit “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight.” The lyrics were changed each week to reflect the night’s game.
ESPN will no longer have access to the music or words because Williams owns the publishing rights, the master recordings and the song. Williams, the son of country music icon Hank Williams, is known for his bombastic manner and easy opinions.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

And neither will most men. I actually hated the Hank Williams bit anyway so I don’t mind that part of it, but the way it went down is disturbing. Bigger fish to fry than ESPN..

Today we have EPSN to say that most men won’t turn it off is as obvious as saying there are very few real men in the country.Do you think for a minute the men that founded this country would have turned a blind eye to this political correct(constitutionally wrong) movement. It a sad day when supposed men can be glamoured by twinkling lights on an idiot box to accept an agenda and policies that are destroying the nation. Because in not accepting it they will not get to see a bunch of guys in tight clothing and helmets try to move an oblong ball 100 yards.
Or will not get to cheer for a bunch of guys in shorts trying to get a sphere into a basket at the other end of a court.

You are probably right. Most die hard football fans WILL NOT not watch MNF. They will claim they won’t but they will.
I KNOW I won‘t and haven’t watched ESPN for years – McNabb ring a bell.
If you don‘t stand for something you won’t stand for anything (or however that goes)
So Old Glory, if you “just can’t” turn off ESPN maybe you should go out and buy and brand spankin new GMC, and restock your home with General Electric appliances.

I sometimes miss the sports but not the PC, liberal, progressive trash that comes with it. This is just another reason to turn it off and save the $90 a month. We have spend more time as a family and more time reading than ever before. I would encourage all to at least try this. The impact on my family has out shined all the games that I have missed. We should have done it years ago.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 1:23pmahhh, I knew I would get jumped. All I am saying is ESPN is king now when it comes to sports. Something like this will have absolutly no effect on their ratings whatsoever. When they dumped Rush I was ticked and I said I would not watch ever again. Then I realized Rush could take care of himself and it exposed ESPN for what they are. Now Rush watches ESPN and holds no grudges but you can tell it still bothers him in a way.
I do not watch the NFL anyway. Have not watched a MNF in years. For the most part, I have grown to hate the channel. I was there in 1980 when it started and was loyal. Now college football is another thing and when they carry most of the games, where ya gonna go?
As I stated, bigger fish to fry than this stupid PC move ESPN made..

In other words, the government isn’t allowed to limit your speech. An employeer? Sure they can, they do it all the time. Can you go insult your company to customers and expect to keep your job based on First Amendment protection? Heck no. The First Amendment doesn’t apply.
Herman Cain and FOX think a community can decide whether or not a mosque is built, because they also don’t understand the First Amendment. And of course, most here believe that the Tea Party can peacefully assemble, but that nobody else can. In Herman Cain’s words, that would be “unAmerican” even though the Constitution specifically provided that right.
I think Hank Jr. and Cain should get a handle on the First Amendment before they start talking about it again.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 1:51pm@ John: it could be 50k boycotters and ESPN will not bat an eye. Just like the DWTS this year and the Bono chick who is now a man thing. I have not allowed my family to watch it but ABC could not care less. Anyone that wants to turn it off, go for it. You will be a better person for it, no doubt. It would help you appear more objective if you could, just once in a while, find a position to take that didn’t 100% support the socialists.
I do fully understand that Hank was wrong about the 1st Amendment, and that was my first thought when I heard his quote. That said, he made an analogy, he did not call anybody anything as CNN, and many huffy puffy on the left like to think.
CNN has every right to send him packing, with or without reason.
I‘m still waiting to see however if you’ll ever, and I mean ever, take a position contrary to Obama that is supported by the “tea party”. The very tea party you so obviously loathe, to the point that you have to invent lies out of whole cloth about them in order to denigrate them.
Men of reason who are objective tow no party line, and engage in independent thought, sometimes even coming into conflict with people whose views he generally shares. So far I’ve not seen that from you. Until I do, I can’t really take you seriously.

Wonder how that turd would float…but if that is what the amendment means..???….bad premise and I would not fire the person because that person was not personally attacking me or my business just like Hank was in no way reflecting his opinion towards ESPN….but ESPN made it clear their opinions are reflected at Hank..and I am not even a Hank fan!!!

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 4:57pmGhostOfJefferson, you don’t have a problem with what Hank said. That’s fine. But ESPN believed that it would be a worse financial decision for them to retain the association with Hank that let him go. There no “lefty” reasoning there, it’s about viewership, advertisers and ultimately profit.
Now, I believe in capitalism, which this is a perfect example of. If you and the Tea Party don’t believe in capitalism, and believe ESPN should make decisions based on appeasing you instead of what makes them the most money, then I can hardly take you seriously. Nor is citing the First Amendment “towing the party line.”
There is something to your post though, I admit. Although I do occasionally agree with whatever idea is expressed in the threads (although rarely, this is about as far right as any website), I tend to post more when I think there’s a legitimate case on the other side of the coin.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 8:52pmTEIN, I’m not a Hank fan either. Thanks for your thoughtful response. Let me try again. Let’s say you are the CEO of Nike. You hire Tiger Woods. Why? You hire him because he’s successful, he wins, he’s a good looking guy, he’s a total professional. You hire him because you want to associate your brand with him. You want this person, who everyone admires and loves and watches associated with your brand, in this case Niki. That’s marketing, you want this person associated with Nike in the minds of people who buy your products. And that is what Tiger Woods sells: that image of him as the ultimate, driven professional golfer. He makes money playing golf, but what he sells to advertisers is his IMAGE, something Nike wants to pay him for.
But then stories come out about him, he lies, and, you know the rest. His image, the thing that Nike was buying, has turned from a very positive thing, to a very negative thing. His image has lost value – it now has negative value, worthless. So Nike drops him.
You have trouble seeing the same thing with Hank Jr’s comments because you agree with him politically. I’m sure there are people that think Tiger was way cool for cheating on his wife with waitresses, but Niki didn’t most of their customers did. ESPN viewed Hank the way Niki viewed Tiger. So they dropped him. Follow the money.

You are wrong, you idiot liberal troll. The First Amendment ALWAYS applies, though it may not for much longer, with people like you around willing to throw it under the bus in the name of political correctness. One, he did not express this opinion on his employer’s time or their property. He expressed a political opinion in a public forum, which, last time I looked, is protected by the First Amendment. Two, It is PC CRAP like this that is threatening everybody’s liberties, including YOURS. What if your employer read one of your posts here and decided to FIRE your liberal a$$ because he didn’t like your opinion? I heard some twit on NPR breathlessly announcing that HW Jr. was fired for “comparing Obama to Hitler”. While I happen to think that would be a valid comparison, that is NOT what HWJ said. What he SAID was, John Boehner and Obama playing golf together was like Hitler and Benjamin Netanayhu playing golf. It was an analogy of how they are far apart in viewpoints and politics, which is quite different from “comparing to Hitler”.

All that crap from JZS and others about “employers have a right to control employee speech” and “you can‘t expect to insult your employers’ customers and keep your job” is just an attempt to muddy the waters. Hank Jr. wasn’t AT work when he made those remarks, nor did he make them about a “customer”. He was speaking about two public figures–too ELECTED officials, whom we USED to have a right to criticize publicly, before the politically correct crowd took over.
He made his remarks on his own time in a public forum, and that is NONE of his “employers’” business, thank you very much, nor is it their place to attempt to CENSOR what he says. And yes, that IS a violation of the First Amendment, whether the liberal idiots think so, or not.
I’m not a huge HWJ fan — it is the principle of the thing I find objectionable. If Obama and Friends have their way, nobody will have the right to say nothin’ — so keep it up, you Marxist “useful idiots” — defend the creeping erosion of our Constitutional rights until one day we wake up and don’t have any–which will not be long, if ODUMBER and idiots like JZS have their way.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, Cofemale. In fact, there are MANY disturbing similarities between Hitler and Obama, including Obama’s increasingly blatant hatred of Israel and embracing of radical Islam. (If you recall, the radical Islamists were ALL in bed with Hitler during WWII, in hopes of getting the opportunity to kill some Jews.) And even though Hank Jr. did NOT say Obama was like Hitler, even mentioning Hitler in the same breath as Obama was WAY too close to the truth for comfort for Obama and his minions in the press, so of course they had to spin a lie as an excuse to attack and discredit, which is what they DO, when somebody has the NERVE to speak the truth about them and their dreams of world conquest, or even when somebody comes too CLOSE to speaking the truth about them.

How about telling the T-Party to go to Hell? Now, this slander against many of us. How about that Vick guy and what he did to little dogs while training his big dogs for fighting? This is truly sick.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 9:54pmSo, if I take Dennis Miller’s meaning, then just about ANYTHING can be justified in the name of protecting profits and making money, right? I guess it’s getting pretty UNPROFITABLE for people like Obama for the rest of us to have Constitutional rights, so they are working hard to change that.
And the Leftist idiots say WE’RE all about protecting the rights of the rich? That really IS rich, isn’t it!
Report Post »stogieguy7
Posted on October 6, 2011 at 12:17pmESPN is now comprised of a bunch of PC-addled metrosexual pansies! And, since when are we governed by a dictatorship where it’s a crime to say ANYTHING that can be taken as an offense to the presidency? Under Barack Haile Selassie Hussein Obama II, this country has rapidly turned into Venezuela. The media is in cahoots with this leftist strongman and they’re controlling the distribution of information and opinion to the extent that they can. Say something negative about Bush and you’re expressing your God-given 1st Amendment rights (Danny DeVito, etc.); say something negative about Dear Leader and you’re a hate-filled racist who cannot be tolerated and who needs to be suppressed. Not to mention that Hank‘s comment wasn’t even that bad, he was chastising both sides.
It is scary and my only question is: how much more will we take before we get off of our butts and do something about it? Because we’re losing our great country here. This is merely a symptom of that.

Yeah, Obama and his chums are all such great admirers of Mao, if Hank Jr. had said “Mao” instead of “Hitler”, they’d probably nominate him for the Presidential Freedom Medal as a Great American.

Report Post »It is stupid to conclude that Hank was comparing B.O. to Hitler. He only coined an “example of opposites” to make a point.

AND “football types” aren’t whining sissies anyway! So, change the MNF logo to PINK, why don’t you!

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 10:33pmYeah, isn’t it amazing how the lamestream media are all earnestly proclaiming that (gasp) Hank Williiams Jr. actually compared Obama to HITLER! Well, no, he didn’t–though he would certainly not be WRONG if he did! But, as you said, he was making a point about what opposites Obama and Boehner are, and that it was peculiar to see them playing golf together. A lot of us found that little golf date “odd”.
But Lord knows, the Lamestream Media never let a little thing like the TRUTH get in the way of a good story! ESPECIALLY if it is a story that allows them to persecute somebody they deem politically incorrect. These people should be EMBARRASSED to call themselves “news” people or “journalists”, when they have become nothing more than glorified propaganda organs for ODUMBER and his Marxist agenda.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 6:46pmIt is inconceivable to me that it wasn’t the NFL that demanded Hank Williams Jr.’s firing. The NFL is extremely image conscious and Williams was actually on FOX & Friends plugging Monday Night Football. He was even introduced by Kilmeade as ‘the voice of Monday Night Football for over twenty years.” Had Williams made the offensive remarks at one of his own concerts it would have been a different story. But here he was too closely associated with the NFL and MNF. ESPN (and the NFL) had every right to fire him.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 11:06pmAnd as for those babbling about how this is “capitalism at its finest”, and that they are only protecting their “market” by distancing themselves from Hank Jr., they ARE aware, are they not, that the hard-core left-wingers are actually only a small PERCENTAGE of this country’s people? So if this is their idea of “capatalism”, well, they’re not very good at it, or running the numbers, are they! The leftie-tards just make a lot of noise and have insinuated themselves into highly visible positions (like Lamestream Media reporters) that make it SEEM as if they are the majority. So jumping into bed with the left-wingers is not a real SMART move, marketing-wise. If it is mass market they are after, boy, did they just shoot themselves in the foot, or WHAT?
