Ethical Tactics? New James O’Keefe Undercover Video Targets Medicaid Fraud

Project Veritas has released a lengthy new video report that features tactics similar to those used in past investigations — individuals posing as criminals seeking aide and advice from officials who should know better.

But should the tactics used in the video be considered ethical? The Blaze has published reports critical of James O‘Keefe’s past investigations.  Does this new investigation fare any better?

The attention-grabbing scenario this time involves young men posing as Russian drug dealers. They claim to drive a wildly expensive sports car with a gold-plated engine. Their theoretical sisters are part of the family operation trading sex for drugs. The men seek help from a Medicaid office in Ohio.  And if past patterns hold true…look for more videos in coming days from additional encounters in other locations.

The Blaze team will be certainly be looking at the report in detail, but there are initial questions and concerns to consider as you watch the video.

The key questions involve the ethics of telling lies in an attempt to reveal truths.

Is it okay to tell any lie if it creates an outcome that you find enlightening or amusing?

Would it be okay if one of your ideological opponents did the same thing?  If George Soros and Media Matters sent interns posing as conservatives to work at the Fox News Channel so that they could record reporters, editors and hosts saying embarrassing thing in unguarded moments — would that be okay?

The video begins with a presentation of “facts” about the men involved.  But none of it is true.  It’s a fictitious scenario cooked up for the camera. The men have no actual sisters selling sex.

And there is a great deal that we don’t know about the circumstances and the outcomes — were applications even filed?  We have contacted officials in Ohio who are looking into the matter.

I’m pretty sure Medicaid workers, of varying skills and judgement, deal with all kinds of nut cases in the course of routine business.  It’s not a stretch to think that an average worker suddenly confronted with men claiming to be Russian drug dealers might be justifiably nervous about the safety and circumstances and might feel it wise to say anything the quickly wrapped up the meeting!  The worker might plan to contact authorities or trash the application afterwards….even if they said helpful things during the meeting.

I’m sure this video and any others to come will show workers saying and doing egregious things.

But is it okay to create a lie to trigger that?

Many conservatives will say yes and cheer the exposure of seemingly corrupt bureaucrats.

Would it be okay to create a fictitious scenario that would sexually humiliate an innocent young woman, simply for the purpose of making fun of the media?

These are serious questions to consider.

The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes told The Blaze back in March, “It‘s dishonest for anyone in journalism to pretend to be someone they’re not.”  Barnes sort of gives O’Keefe a pass, though, calling him more of a political hit man than a journalist.  O’Keefe does describe himself as journalist, however.

Conservatives are understandably gladdened by any embarrassment to befall ACORN, or NPR and now Medicaid.  But principled conservatives are wise to soberly grapple with the implications of the tactics employed.

I’ve taught seminars on media ethics for twenty years.  Long enough to know that each case presents many facets that must be considered.  And long enough to know that undercover investigations can be powerful and valuable — but they must be executed in as ethical manner as possible.

    When the FBi runs a sting op, are they telling lies? hell yes.

      Right. If the only way to expose the crime is to pretend to be something you’re not, then fine. The problem I have is when they edit the video to fit their point and edit out context and even exonerating segments. What they have done to expose Planned Parenthood, ACORN and the like is excellent and they should keep trying to uncover the truth. But, they should be plain and tell us the WHOLE truth when they report it to us.

      The guys who do the TV Sex stings are coordinated with real police. The story here does not mention any charges being handed down, isn‘t it O’Keefe’s public duty to see justice is done? Or is he an “entertainer?”

      He has been frog-walked out of Congressional Offices, found guilty and served time, he should know the legal system by now.

      Seems to me if he had coordinated with the State Attorney General, we would have a real story here… Just Sayin’

Nobody would watch 20 hours of video on these stings just like nobody listened to the thousands of hours of Nixon tapes, hell Nixon was impeached on mostly snippets of tapes taken out of context.

      O’Keeffe does one thing. He gets paid by Conservatives to ruin people’s lives by getting long stretches of video and severely editing to put the person in the worst light possible. The Blaze exposed on his videos. He tried to ruin the career of a legitimate CNN reporter by luring onto a boat filled with sex paraphernalia. Wouldn’t take much video inside that boat to make her look bad, but his trap was so revolting that one of his friends warned the reporter.

      You may see this guy as a hero, but he is someone who takes joy in destroying people by tricking them into talking and then selectively editing their comments to destroy their lives. Not one “expose” he has ever made has withstood rational scrutiny. You may worship him as God if you wish, but I think he’s a poor excuse for a human being. He’s currently being prosecuted, and I won’t cry if he goes to jail.

      I am so outraged over this. When are these useful idiots going to get it. They are the ones hurting this country. Every time they don’t report these people to the authorities, every time they let them get Medicare, free food stamps, or healthcare, they hurt themselves and every other American that’s just getting by.

      Doesn’t anyone remember “60 Minutes” or “20/20″? Those shows were PRAISED for exposing fraud. No one demanded that the undercover reporters ‘show all of their video’ or suggested they did anything illegal.

      “60 Minutes” made a habit of exposing corrupt companies…O‘Keefe exposes corrupt agencies whose funding comes from the taxpayers’ pocket!

      O’Keefe is a HERO and a PATRIOT in my book! I hope he inspires more people to do the same. Maybe with enough sunlight these agencies and the government funding them will become disinfected.

      …Hmmm, this might be a good idea for a new television show.

      I would like to see a new reality show that has tapes of all the persons who threw O’Keefe OUT of their offices.

      And yes, he was expelled out of dozens of ACORN offices on the East Coast, several also reported his visit to police. NPR reported him to the FBI.

    This is an interesting quandary. Is it ethical? I’m not sure. Is Dateline completely ethical when it does an installment of “To Catch a Predator?” Don’t some members of that team pretend to be something/someone that they aren’t? If the Blaze frowns on O’Keefe’s methods do they also disagree with trying to catch sexual predators by similar actions? Or is it possible that sometimes you must use any and all tactics necessary, fair or foul, to stop a crime……………..

      82nd I do have to agree with you in regards to catching the child predators. I think though in the case of this group though, while they are indeed exposing corruption and criminal activities, where the line with ethics has to be drawn is this:

      Do they by their own actions incite others to commit crimes or engage in their own criminal activity to catch people doing so.

      From the way I understand most activites of police investigation, there are established, by law, guidelines and limits of what it takes for them to initiate an investigation into suspected criminal matters.

      In the case of O’Keefe though, so long as the entirity of the raw video is made availible to the folks who examine such matters for the integrity or lack thereof in stories such as this, and the Blaze staff is incredible with doing that, then I would have to say this is a borderline matter each individual has to make up their mind on their own.

      The Blaze was nationally recognized for being Very Critical of the fake NPR footage that misrepresented the facts, and I take Baker’s admonitions in this article to mean he could be doing the same thing when he gets these tapes – If and When O’Keefe provides them.

      Some might question O‘keefe’s tactics, I for one do not. If you look at the expressions of the office workers, it appears that they have heard it all. They didn’t appear shocked! If you or I, or any ethical person were to hear their stories, they would be.

      I would not help them break the law, I would report them. It’s funny, I wonder how many people actually need assistance. Or, how many that really need assistance, get it as easily as these
      seemingly did.

      The doors are open, no one is accountable. I’m not sure you can even blame some of these workers. I am sure these directives came from the top. We should be asking for them to be fired, the big guys who make all the bucks, and all the decisions. When the top people get canned, the rest will know that this will not be tolerated.

      Criminals are bad, and if found as such, must be punished to the full extent of the law. Just because O’Keefe shows you an edited tape, it does not mean it is what actually happened.

      He took down ACORN telling us he “appeared in front of them dressed as a Pimp,” but that was Not True, the footage was later “added in” by Andy Brietbart – and never happened. But Fox portrayed it as factual footage.

      O’Keefe is no more a journalist than a private eye is a cop.

Same with Chris Wallace and Andrew Brietbart (who is proud of the editing and how he helped O’Keefe do a “timed release” of professionally edited materials to “get the best results.”. FACT

      When did we become so lax, thinking that it’s just easier to let these criminals get away with ripping us off. No wonder why our country is drowning in debt, our people do not care.

      I don’t believe that they took it upon themselves to make these decisions. Who made them?
      Those are the people that I want fired. That shouldn’t get pensions and benefits, the supervisors. Because if they didn’t know what their people were doing, they should have known.

    Law enforcement can lie to catch a criminal. Since that has been done over and over and over… then why can’t any other American lie to catch a criminal? To expose them for what they are?

    If somebody asks me for help and tells me they are selling drugs, and shows me a bag a baking soda while claiming it’s cocaine, I‘ll turn him in if I know it’s fake or not. Then they‘ll know I’m not a crook myself. That’s how it works. +1 approval from me in that regard.

      Group of boy scouts are in a boat (on the river) when they realize they are heading for a waterfall. Scout leader tells them it’s time to pray. Boys all pray, and after saying “Amen” one boy starts paddling his little heart out. leader asks if the boy doesn’t trust God. Boy says “Yes but I’m going to give him all the help I can”.

      My point: Pray for good things to happen, trust in the Lord to do his thing, then work your own butt off to help as much as you can.

      James O’Keefe, the man who slew ACORN and toppled the CEO of NPR, is some new kind of journalist – Johnny Knoxville meets Glenn Beck in Michael Cera’s body.

      His critics call him a ‘sneaky little punk’ who cheats context to destroy careers and lives.

      They tried to Con a Congresswoman in Louisiana but failed standing up to professional security agents. Based on their antics, O’Keefe & friends sat in jail, went to trial and were found guilty by real judges; were put on probation and have paid fines & done community service.

      Fake Editing: In the ACORN tape encounters, the activists posed as a prostitute and a pimp and discussed prostitution with the workers. But while footage shot away from the offices shows one activist, James O’Keefe, in a flamboyant pimp costume, there is no indication that he was wearing the costume while talking to the ACORN workers. The costume footage is apparently to add special meaning for the Fox News audience.

      The “OLD” media, this would be true about.
      The new media is writing the book. I think that is why everyone is questioning this.
