European Union Regulators Ban Children’s Toys, Blowing Up Balloons

EU regulators have a new target; children’s games. The Telegraph reports that the “EU toy safety directive” recently put in place, bans balloon blowing by unsupervised children, whistles, magnetic fishing games and other party favorites popular during the holidays. EU regulators have been banned children from blowing balloons and playing with certain toys to protect them against the threat of choking and chemicals.
“Despite having been popular favourites for generations of children, party games including whistles and magnetic fishing games are to be banned because their small parts or chemicals used in making them are decreed to be too risky.
Apparently harmless toys that children have enjoyed for decades are now regarded by EU regulators as posing an unacceptable safety risk.”
It is unclear how the EU directive will be enforced. In addition to restrictions on party games, the new laws will also impose restrictions on how loud noisy toys “including rattles or musical instruments, are allowed to be.”
One European Parliament consumer safety committee member said of the EU regulations, “I would say that this is crackers but I sure children are banned from using them too. EU party poopers should not be telling families how to blow up balloons.”
The European Commision insists that the new safety legislations will prevent “horror stories.”

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 11:31am@ qban when I was pregnant I was in an environment where people smoked. By the time I delivered I had a sever bleed out. The dr. asked when I started smoking because this happens with smokers – told him I didn’t and I really don’t think he believed me. To this day I blame it on the smokers. I would come home and take my clothes off in the garage because it smelled so bad. To this day neither I nor my husband has ever smoked plus no one is allowed to smoke in our home. I do agree with bans on smoking!

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 12:23pmI hate second hand smoke! You should avoid it. I’d like every smoker to use an electronic cigarette. They are better for everyone!! No tars, no second hand smoke, no stink, and no stains!!
I don’t like the idea of the nanny state though. The law is necessary to keep people from being victimized. It is NOT the job of the law to keep everyone safe and UN-offended!! In my opinion if it is legal you should be allowed to have it in public areas and the law should not be controlling what you allow on your own private property. People should be considerate of each other and if they were we would all be better off. Police yourself and you won’t have everyone trying to control you with laws.

Posted on October 13, 2011 at 10:01pmI think placing blame on the smokers is misguided. The true culprit in your proposed scenario would be the pregnant woman who made a routine and conscience decision to surround herself with smokers.

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 11:11amWell, we are no far behind Europe.Have you guys watched the latest comercial about second hand smoking where evrybody is wearing a gas mask? I still remember when the goverment introduced the smoking area in restaurants. That time it looks really stupid, if everybody was in the same room, what was the point? Next, they created a smoking area in the airplanes. Again it didn’t make any sense because all passengers were sharing the same air in the plane. Next, they banned smoking from public buildings. Next they pass regulations so you can sue your employer if he allow smoking in the office. Finally they banned smoking in public open spaces. I’m not a smoker but I know you will not get any effect from somebody smoking in the next bench at the park. It is not a matter of public health, it is a matter of control. Liberals don’t care about your health, they will disguise their real intentions behind exagerated concerns about your safety, health, etc. You name it and they will find a way to regulate it in the name of public safety, public interest, etc. The example I like the most is “Eminent Domain”. Where the goverment seizing your property for whatever reason, including the benefit of their political campaign contributors. Beware , they will create a Buffet Rule for everything, including your personal property.

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 3:23pmThere are already advocates for “black-boxes” being installed in every vehicle. And in the military, if you drive a military vehicle…you must wear a helmet at all times….same goes for motorcycles; also, Marines who live on a military installation have to register their motorcycles with the Provost Marshal.

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 6:41amDo I smell a tinge of sharia law interwoven into these regulations? Will the regulators put a noise limit on firing guns into the air and fireworks to celebrate a holiday too? How about cheers from a crowd during a soccer game? Regulating children’s toys should come with warnings on the packaging like we have in the USA, not banning them outright.
“ Big Brother” controlling the populace…welcome to 1984. The “ Useful Idiots” are becoming a world wide epidemic.

Posted on October 11, 2011 at 7:29amThis type of nonsense was what drove our ancesters to come to America. Of course, America suffers from the same disease.
Want an example ?…..read this!
In 2008, a bill was signed into law to protect children from lead in toys coming from off-shore.
In that law was language to prevent the sale of off-road vehicles (motorcycles-atv’s) to anyone under the age of 12.
Now, you can only guess what over-zealous group was behind that language. Yep, ‘environmental’ groups. They have been behind land-closures for decades, and are absolutely fanatical about getting OHV’s off public land, or even private land, to be honest.
What better way to break the chain of kids following in their dad’s, mom’s, or siblings footsteps by just making dirt-bikes ilegal?
Fortunately, the language (scheduled to go into effect next year) was removed from the SB just weeks ago due to intense work by motorcycle/atv groups.
For some motorcycle dealers, OHV sales are a huge portion of their yearly sales. There would have been jobs lost at the dealerships and the motorcycle factories. All this to appease radical groups who can‘t support claims of permanent damage to Mother Earth by OHV’s.
People, please pay attention to what is going on and the real-life consequences it has on people’s lives and freedom.

But I’d probably be investigated by the “scorpion abuse committee” and by the “racial diversity and justice department” if I didn’t use different colored scorpions.
