Even Hipsters are Abandoning Obama — But What Is a Hipster, You Ask?

Hipsters are Abandoning Obama How Ironic

Hipster may not be a term all readers are familiar with. But in case you were wondering, the typically liberal subculture is now reportedly abandoning the president, too.

Urban Dictionary defines hipsters as a “subculture of men and women typically in their 20‘s and 30’s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.” They can typically be spotted wearing skinny jeans and faded T-shirts from Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, with messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs on the streets of Brooklyn, Chicago or San Francisco.

Hipsters usually don’t care too much about politics, but the group was particularly enthused in 2008 for the biracial, young, and Facebook “Likeable” Barack Obama. However, The New York Observer (NYO) now reports that the president has become a punchline in clubs and art galleries, with hipsters having trouble seeing how they can throw the same support towards Obama in 2012:

“It is hard to remember now, but the summer and fall of 2008 in the city were as if an old-timey party convention had met Burning Man, and it seemed like all the political clubs in town had been swept aside in favor of open-mic nights from a generation of supposedly apathetic and skeptical hipsters. They passed around Obama speeches like they were bootlegged concert tapes. They carried around dog-eared copies of The Audacity of Hope. They quoted the 2004 convention address like it was poetry. Even supposedly blasé Williamsburg sported a Shepherd Fairy two-toned Obama poster, with the word “Progress” stenciled in bold font below.

But now the progress posters have begun to wither. A new poster, featuring the president’s image superimposed over Frankenstein’s monster’s face, has been spotted around the neighborhood.”

NYO’s David Freedlander was able to infiltrate deep into the grungiest corners of Brooklyn to find that from the New Kings Democrats to The Barack Obama Democratic Club to Brooklyn for Barack, the drumbeat from the Oval Office just doesn’t get Hipster juices flowing like it once did:

“’That time we felt that Obama was more or less this outsider, this new young proponent for change, and he really engaged the younger, 20-something crowd, and we felt that this was someone very different, someone that was kind of an intelligent, amicable leader that we could get behind.’

And now?

‘It’s hard to get everyone to rally back around him this time. We see mild victories here and there, but it’s not the complete overhaul we were expecting.’”

One political analyst told Freelander that while the excitement may have declined towards Obama, he sees the hipster base perhaps being reinvigorated depending on who the Republicans nominate:

“’The newness and the excitement is gone, and it would be hard to rekindle just because of the historic nature of the election,’ he said. ‘But it’s definitely still there. Talk to me if Michelle Bachmann is the Republican nominee; then  you’ll see how fired up everyone will be.’”

Or they could just go back to being apathetic about politics. Time will tell.

Most who voted Obama were voting their feelings. They voted –and will vote again– according to a sense of belonging to a social group. If hipsters turn anti-Obama because other hipsters are turning anti-Obama–well that’s just FIIINE with me!

You guys don’t get it do you? I‘m a 20 something and I’m very unhappy with the way things are going. I’m an independent too. I come to this site because I value the input of the older generation on today’s issues, but here’s the thing: it’s your guys fault things went like this anyways. You backed two stupid wars (that I fought in) that bakrupted us, signed off on Bush’s massive expenditures, then blow off the young crowd like we‘re a bunch of idiots that can’t see whats going on. You want a conservative president? Reach out to the younger generation instead of just calling us entitled little jerks.

      Scrubpuppy, well said.

I was formulating a post already as I was reading down through the comments and your post prompted it. We were all “young” once, no matter what generation we belong to. We were finding our way in the world, determining our place in society. We saw things differently than older generations. We had a sense of belonging with those like us, we even had our own words and music and style that no other group could understand. It is not stupid or idiotic…It is life.

Scrubpuppy, it was not “our” guy and Obama is not “your” guy. We are ALL in the same boat here. The general trend is young adults are more liberal and as you age you become more conservative. That is just the way it works. I used to be a pot smoking hippie, now I am a Bible thumping minister. We never quit growing and learning. I just wanted to tell you these things because I want you to not be guilty of the very thing you warn us against. Do not think your generation is any smarter or better able to lead than older generations. We were all where you are now, and we have grown past it. People are simply individuals. I will not call hipsters, or any other group, idiotic, but dont make the mistake of thinking you are better or smarter than anyone else either.

All I want to get across is that you older tea party folks should understand that the younger generation is craving leadership right now, and we have none. Unfortunately, the tea party isn‘t an option for most of us since it’s been hijacked by the religious right. All the young people want is someone who cares about the same things we do. Jobs for our friends (I‘m employed but most of my friends aren’t), no internet laws (because we’re all nerds), and less wars to fight in. Thats why Ron Paul gets such a massive spike with us, whereas we see Bachman or Perry as polarizing figures that are just going to make the Left/Right divide much worse.

@ scrubpuppy- First, thank you for your service to this country. Secondly, you are right that many of us old folks sat by and let this happen.. We were too busy letting, “the other guy” watch the store.

Being in a managerial position, I always said to my subordinates that there were three type of people in the world. Those that made things happen. Those that watched things happen. And, those that wondered what happened. Today, as it pertains to politics, I have finally taken my own advice and am trying to make things happen. However, as evidenced by the number of eligible voters that do not go to the polls, there are still too many that will sit around and wonder what happened.

The old cliche that the younger generation is the country’s future, is no less true today than it was fifty years ago We must do everything we can not to paint every young person as a liberal that thinks only with their heart. The answer is engagement and understanding, not estrangement and ridicule.

You went to the tea parties in 2008 to demand government rein in spending and looked at taxes sensibly? You’ve demanded your economics professors educate you about the sustainability of entitlement programmes in this country? You’ve spoken to your parents about their home loans and whether they bought “too much house” for their ability to pay it off? You did your part right? You Know why you’re craving leadership Scrubpuppy? Because your enabled, entitled generation doesn’t foster leaders, it fosters “social justice”. It expects goverment to do “things” for them. It demands government stop “bullying” in school, pay for student loans, pay for healthcare..ad nauseum. I read recently that employers have a difficult time with young employees because they get bored with jobs easily. They expect to be promoted quickly and compensated handsomely for entry level jobs. As a result, they’re transient jobs and leave jobs frequently and quickly. Additionally, because they’re coddled throughout school, they have poor problem solving skills. You demand leaders Scrubpuppy? Your generation is bereft of them because your teachers and peers failed you. You “young people” are more concerned about a homosexual’s “rights” than building careers and legacies. It will pay off when they don’t vote, which they often don’t. These are the US versions of the thugs in England who have been lead to believe that they are entitled to welfare without effort. They have been taught this not by the government, but by their families as the welfare state now span generations. People in New Orleans who waited for government checks instead of leaving felt that their city “would take care of them”. Two weeks in the Super Dome and how did that go? These are the Obama supporters and for the sake of American let’s hope they stay at home.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could undo the laws Obama passed, cancel the debt he caused, and return trillions to our Treasury? Well you can!

Politically disregarded law, Art. 2, Sec. 1, “No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible … .”

Exempting a citizen (the minimum requisite then was US birth to a US father) from being a natural born citizen, proves they are not equal. Only US birth to US citizen parents (plural) is greater, thus defining a natural born citizen; as confirmed by Supreme Court binding precedent in Minor v. Happersett, 1874.[1]

Obama’s Kenyan father precluded his eligibility! Impeachment isn’t for a usurper, it ignores the damage and the Senate may not cooperate. The solution is to prosecute Obama (aka Barry Soetoro, Harrison J. Bounel, Barack Soebarkah) for using an alleged fraudulent Social Security number and birth certificate to usurp the Presidency.[2]

That way if he resigns and is later pardoned, we can still undo the damage. Demand your state and federal elected officials prosecute Obama now!

That makes sense to me. What do you think?

In the winter of 1984, while sitting at a twelve place oak and marble dining table, under three chandeliers worth more than my home at the time, the children around me chattered.
Their words were concise, cold and calculative.

In the presences of those children, I could merely listen.
A handsome boy, who, as a tot, saluted in the spirit of his father’s funeral, discussed odd, unmanned aero devices and foreign borders.
A chubby boy, who beat his neighbor to death with a golf club, discussed a national plan to care for the sick.
A beautiful girl, who would soon control more property around the world then anyone at the table, discussed a curious advertising campaign that would accomplish nothing except generate revenue.
A boy, who would marry into influence, discussed offering war machines to Arabians in exchange for access to even greater influence inside the Vatican.
A petite girl, who’s great, great grandfather completed Place Vendôme, discussed the development of a one million square foot shopping mall in north America.
      I felt abandoned.

Those were the children of the rich and the powerful.
None at that somber table saw themselves that way.
The Kennedys, Smiths, Shrivers, Hiltons, Zagamis and Bourbon-Condés, were describing the future.

And … It all came true.

When you get older and have children its likely that your opinion on religion will change also and you will see the importance of God in your life and understand the closer you stay to him the more peace you will have personally! The teaching of Jesus Christ are what keeps us from doing the evils of other religions bc of the fear and love you have for him!!! Disappointed because the free government ride is over. Mommy and whoever daddy is have lost their job too. The freaky art gallery, the gay club, the thieving charity and the yellow rag newspaper and magazines have closed down. No more free money for morons. The wacko donors are broke. BOO HOO! This time do not vote to prove that you are not a racist, vote to prove you are not an idiot – RICK PERRY.

I laughed when he appeared on the screen and matched the Urban Dictionary definition to a T. I agreed with most of what he said actually, aside from his insane views of the military and Israel.

Hipsters are snotty wanna be hippies, the children of hippies the entitlement generation who are now raising zombies of their own. Doesnt really matter who or what they are called and whether or not they will be there to re-elect Emperor Obama. They will get swayed to him again when he starts with the heavy blame Bush, GOP, conservatives, Wall St and TEA party game.

Lets assume though he doesnt get them back, again it doesnt matter b/c there are so many uneducated, unengaged, nanny state benefactors out there that will get duped into re-electing the Emperor. Anyone in opposition is demonized and the in-fighting has already started btwn those of us with a grasp on reality and the obamapaulbots. Its the Emperors dream, while the obamapaulbots are demonizing anyone who isnt on board with the Paul doctrine the Emperor will be there sweeping the gimme gimme generation off their feet right to the voting booth with more lies and empty promises. http://SavingtheRepublic.com

I think of a hipster as one of those street people who have these big, nasty mats of hair full of dirt and bugs that has not been washed for a year. And a stench so overpowering that it could make you gag, even though you are 20 feet away. Wallowing in the gutter, begging for change, talking to the sidewalk and howling at the moon. Or perhaps a troll on the Blaze.

You got it way off. If anything, hipsters are predominantly metrosexuals who value their image highly. I think you mean hippies, but that description doesn’t fit any hippies I know either. Ah well.

They got the empty suit they deserved. The most worthless, and most damaging president in our full American history. The president so bad that he even made Carter look good! The outrage! The unconstitutional usurpation of an Idi Amin-style dictator wanna-be! The lies! The total lack of transparency (a massive lie) and the crooked backroom deals! The theft! The corruption!

Our great American Republic has suffered enough! Whaddya say? You wanna join the good guys and save our great republic? Live free with opportunity and some prosperity? Or do you just want to take the easy way out, and wallow in the cesspool of the liberal-progressive sewer?

I consider myself a hipster. Their definition is a bit off though. I look at myself as hip and cool but more because I haven’t worked in almost 2 decades and get the taxpayer to pay for most of my lifestyle. Most of my friends are similar minded. They also don’t talk about the part where part of being a hipster is to have disdain for those that want us to work to bring in money for our lifestyles. This is a major part of being a hipster and leads to us posting our venom towards baggers

You call that a lifestyle? Happiness comes from achievement, not sloth. You will find out the hard way that you get out of EVERYTHING exactly what you put into it. Wallow on.

What the 20 something, NY (spoiled) Liberal kids want, doesn’t exist in reality. That guy they were taught about by their Lib teachers is just a figment of their imaginations. The guy who carries a daisy instead of a gun, and makes love instead of war. Maybe the “hipsters” should all just pursue a career in writing for crazy Lib cartoons and other types of passive media. That way they can show off their intellect, and it won’t cost the rest of us. An Obama presidency is = to 4 yrs in purgatory.

Where in the hell do you think the tax dollars come from that Obama and the rest of the Democrats are handing out as “entitlements”? Clearly, you are the mean spirited, greedy people. Shame on you!

It’s funny how reality gets in the way sometimes. People without jobs, people losing jobs, graduates desperate for jobs, apology tours, gold sky high, oil sky high, a devastated housing market, cars that cost 45K instead of what might be expected at 20 plus. All those old cars and car parts gone with the govt. plans that didn’t work. Yes, you can take a somewhat younger, biracial, relatively attractive, big smile, smooth talker in a cool suit one year and look at him a few years later and say “Oh, gosh, what were we thinking in 2008?”

    Surprise!

He and his followers from Chicago (Illinois is in a financial mess) don’t seem to be able to run a business let alone a country. Sending them back to their academic jobs and protection worked for them. Having them in charged didn’t work for the rest of us. Let’s worry less about pretty speechifying and more about survival and thriving again.

I’ll ask the trolls that will no doubt respond…a rhetorical question.

If you were the POTUS and wanted to collapse the free-market system here in the US, and turn it into a big France…but do it without the majority catching on until too late…would you do anything any different than what Barry Soetero has already done?

He lied to us about some things. One of my friends works at burger king and he led him to believe that he would give him a new job and make him rich. While he has taken some money from those that work and given to my friend, he still works at burger king. I tell him all the time he should quit and collect welfare as I do.
