Even Jon Stewart is Now Defending Michele Bachmann…Sort of

The Newsweek cover featuring an unflattering picture of Rep. Michele Bachmann has caused quite a stir. The news magazine has been forced to explain itself and many even traditionally liberal outlets have come out against the photo. And now, add Jon Stewart to the list.
“Newsweek, that’s a sh** picture of Michele Bachmann,” he said, “and clearly not an accidentally shi**y picture.”
According to Stewart, Bachmann is so photogenic (and he showed pictures to prove it) that the only way to make her look bad is to intentionally do so.
“You’ve got to go pretty far out of your way to find a crappy photo of Michele Bachmann, and you did,” he added.
But as we’ve noted before, a Stewart clip isn’t complete unless it offends both sides, and as Mediaite notes, he did just that:
Stewart then noted Brown’s argument that the photo was illustrative of the Representative’s intensity, which Stewart did not buy one bit. “That’s not an ‘I’m galvanizing the voters in Iowa’ picture,’” arguing instead that the cover looked like “the female version of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.’” “You used that photo in a petty attempt to make Michele Bachmann look crazy,” he scolded, suggesting instead, “that’s what her words are for.” He then put together a far “scarier” portrait of Rep. Bachmann– made entirely of her quotes.
Still, he concluded: “Shame on you, Newsweek, and shame on your editor Tina Brown.”

Posted on August 10, 2011 at 9:33amI’m glad Stewart came out against the photo – I agree you have to go out of your way to find a “bad” picture of her, and their motives ring hollow. As Stewart said, “that’s what her words are for”.
Mocking Bachman for her quotes is fair-game, but putting a bad picture on the cover makes me think they simply wanted the controversy to remind people that Newsweek is still around.
What are the chances that Newsweek would ever put an unflattering picture of Rep. Barney Frank, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Rep. Maxine Waters or Rep. Henry Waxman? All of which are, IMHO, virtually impossible to find a good picture of…

Posted on August 10, 2011 at 9:29amThis is a fake issue made by GOP publicists.
The photo looks exactly like Representative Bachmann, without any question. You can tell it is her instantly from 25 feet away. She looks young and robust, and healthy in the photo, energized and attentive to the needs of the country,
It is a remarkable photo and I don’t think she has personally complained about it. I think she is getting lots of free publicity based on this obviously contrived mini-issue, so good for her!

Posted on August 10, 2011 at 11:05amIf it’s a non issue by GOP publicists then why did Stewart pick it up? Everyone can see she looks a little loopy in the picture. Maybe you need glasses. For the record I like Michelle Bachmann for the most part.

Posted on August 10, 2011 at 12:49pmNewsweek posted about the cover on Twitter Sunday with the hashtag “# queenofrage,” very pleased with themselves about what they had done.
It was the liberals who were bragging that they used the “crazy eyes” picture. They were tweeting all over, proud of themselves.
But you come to a conclusion that the GOP made up the issue. Interesting thought process.
Report Post »Sleazy Hippo
Posted on August 10, 2011 at 2:25pmI attribute that hashtag to the title of her story, “Queen of Rage” which centers around her behavior and belief; and her campaign which is based on her righteous indignation against the establishment. . The picture is still high quality and compelling to look at.
I am only saying Representative Bachmann is certainly receiving a lot of free publicity out of this, and that is good for her public recognition. BTW, I still have not heard her campaign complain about it.

Posted on August 10, 2011 at 9:11amIn the 1700‘s and 1800’s all newspapers and journals were openly political. They even had Democrat of Republican in their titles. Their articles and political cartoons were biased and openly so. And everyone survived! Who cares if a magazine or a newspaper or even a privately owned TV network is politically biased. If you don’t agree, don’t read it. History has shown that such media bias doesn’t change the country one way or the other. There is always something to balance it all out…
Report Post »tubular
Posted on August 10, 2011 at 9:52amI agree that private media should be able to be as openly biased as they choose. It is entirely fine for those who pay attention to the issues and know the difference between bias and objective reporting (a rarity). The problem is that the largest segment of the electorate doesn’t really follow the issues day-to-day. Media like Newsweek, ABC, NBC, NYT, and NPR pretend and portray themselves as objective and unbiased. When the casual voter sees this photo or headline, they process it into their mind as fact rather than opinion. It’s like an advertisement without the disclaimer. I hear this all the time from friends I know who pick up a snippet of information from one of the aforementioned sources and just internalize it as though it were true. They have this opinion of something without it being based on any objective information. Even though everything else in their life tends to align with the views of Michele Bachmann they walk away with this idea that she is someone that they don’t want to vote for. It’s subtle, deceptive, and can change the outcome of elections. It would be great if everyone paid attention to their sources of information and the issues but not even a majority do. It would actually be much better if Newsweek would just come right out and label itself as a “liberal publication”. That is absolutely their right and people would tend to internalize the information much more rationally.
