When you think of passing on your keys to a valet, the iconic scene of the parking attendants’ joyride from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” may come to mind. But that’s a product of Hollywood. How true is this to reality?
One of ABC’s local affiliates in Cocoa, Fla., wanted to find out after it received a tip that owner at a “Premier Parking Spot” lot may be taking joyrides. Customers often use parking lots such as this to keep their car near an airport while on travel without parking in a more expensive airport lot.
Renting a sleek, bright red Corvette and equipping it with a GPS tracking device, WFTV investigated what happens with fancy cars parked in the lot owned by Jay Nieves.

Watch and see for yourself:
The investigation found Nieves was not only driving the Corvette on errands and out to Applebee’s for dinner, but was smoking in it, let his dog inside it and even parked it at his home at night.

WFTV confronted Nieves when it had enough evidence, but he denied knowing what the reporter was talking about. Nieves said he didn’t recognize the people in the car when he was shown footage of what appeared to be himself on a smartphone. He just walked away.
When all was said and done, the GPS unit recorded 61 miles racked up by Nieves using the car.

Posted on May 2, 2012 at 6:13pmThe guy is an obvious maroon. Mileage does not disappear from the odometer. Most people I know write down mileage even dropping off at a valet for dinner. If I drop off at a park and fly and have to leave keys, mileage is notated and photoed with my cell phone. And I only own a POS.

Posted on May 2, 2012 at 5:20pmI left my pickup at airport valet parking (very last minute business trip), when I picked it up my neatly stacked CDs were spread all over. Unfortunately I did not record the milage when I dropped it off.
I’m sure this happens more often than people realize. Imagine if they caught him trafficking cocaine using that car? Wouldn’t surprise me if he was using them for that. His arrest record showed ‘1 kilo’… of cocaine… street value about $50k.

This “ investigative report ” should have resulted in an arrest; grand theft auto ! Now let’s concentrate on “ The Ineligible One ” with some investigative reporting about FOUR YEARS LATE !

Posted on May 2, 2012 at 3:59pmI bought a Chrysler 300 (a kinda fun car ) we took it to the gas station to fill it up and the dealership called to say they needed me to bring the car in for some agreed touch up paint work on some minor nicks in the paint. I immediately drove it in. Picked up the car a few days later with only a 1/2 tank of gas left! That was a few years ago. I was sooo angry and they just told me that I must have been confused about how much gas was in the car!
Two months ago when we are now paying a fortune for gas I filled up the same car with gas… $55 Drove home… the next morning I found oil in my driveway! something was very wrong… took the car to the repair shop…. repair work done in 4 days… they had the car over the weekend which was unusual.. I left it on a wednesday and they usually have it done by friday at the latest… I did not get it back until monday.. got my car back with less than a 1/4 tank of gas left and car smelling like an ash tray! Don’t try to tell me that someone was not joy riding in my car… they tried to tell me they were ‘test driving’ the car to make sure everything was OK… you don‘t have to drive 100’s of miles to test it!!!!! I can’t imagine where they took my car.. we are in the middle of nowhere… must have taken it on an out of town trip.
I have learned my lesson… write down the odometer readings!!!
Report Post »TskTsk
Posted on May 2, 2012 at 6:18pmI propose that all valeted cars have a card issued with odometer readings… one to the customer, the other to the valet business. Enough of this!

Report Post »Pounding_hammer
Posted on May 2, 2012 at 5:05pmI just had a child, so I would say (c), but it was a close call for (b) too, since that relates to my family’s future.
But also, you know, if I had some nice stuff, be it a house, or a TV, or a cottage, or a nice car, I would not feel right with some “Shmoe” taking advantage that.
Hey, you’ve got a pretty good conundrum of a question here.
I’ve got one too:
Report Post »Why is it that the the anarchistic left (not my words, but theirs, check the news), supported by Unions, which of course we cannot forget that Unions are the essence of USA automotive production; Why is it that those same anarchistic type, would be so against a person who has the interest and ability to purchase a nice, American-made, quality Union-Produced sports car?
SO against it, that they would disrespect the purchaser by abusing the car as a Valet?

Report Post »@Tharp. That’s a challenge. There are plenty of people trying to screw the kids up. Besides there is that problem with perfecting Mankind. You might want to borrow a cup of cynicism, or realism, from Repub. I don’t mean to be discouraging, things can get better and there is a lot of room for improvement. But when things get good, people get complacent. It’s hard to stay vigilant. Then we get suckered.

Posted on May 3, 2012 at 6:00pm@Pounding. Congratulations, boy or girl?
I don’t think my question was a conundrum, just a matter of keeping your priorities in mind. They all matter, but you don’t fix a leaky faucet when the dam is bursting.
For your question:
I think we broad brush too much. I do, who doesn’t? (I did it again.)
Neither the left wing nor the right wing is monolithic. There are lots of rooms and lots of floors, an attic and a basement too.
(For the attic on the left, I would nominate California. They have some bat crap crazy people in office there.)
I wouldn‘t assume that all the union workers would support the abuse of someone else’s property, much less their own. Union bosses might support it in this case to bring themselves more business. I would guess that they supported Cash for Clunkers too.
Finally. I don’t know what politics Nieves holds. I would guess left. I heard someone, I think Al Frankin*, mention that people coming out of prison tend to move left. Hopefully, he won’t be allowed to vote.
*California has some challengers.
