Every Member of This Minnesota Indian Tribe Makes at Least $1 Million a Year

Thanks to the massive profits generated by their luxury casino and resort operation, the 480 members of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Tribe in Minnesota live a comfortable life of luxury and ease.

“The payouts are the windfall from lucrative casinos and resorts that the tribe runs on its reservation in Scott County — about 45 minutes southwest of Minneapolis-St Paul,” the Daily Mail reports.

Each member of the tribe receives about $84,000 per month ($1.08 million per year), according to recent court documents. Based on these figures, that would make this the wealthiest tribe in U.S. history.

“We have 99.2 percent unemployment,” Stanley R. Crooks told the New York Times in a rare interview. “It’s entirely voluntary.”

And although tribe members keep relatively modest homes, it is reported that most of them own luxury cars, take up expensive hobbies (such as big game hunting or horse breeding), and send their children to private schools.

“Tribal members usually have multiple homes and have been known to take vacation for months at a time,” the Daily reports.

However, not too long ago most tribe members lived in “a motley collection of beat-up trailer homes, melting snow for bath water when wells froze over because they lacked indoor plumbing,” the New York Times reports.

The resorts and casinos turned that around.

“The Mystic Lake Casino Hotel is build on a man-made lake. It includes five restaurants, a 600-room hotel, convention center, 2,100 seat showroom, 8,350 seat outdoor amphitheater and a top-notch golf course,” the Daily reports, adding that The Mystic Lake Casino is the fourth-largest Indian casino in the U.S.

“Combined with the tribe’s Little Six Casino, revenues reportedly make up the lion‘s share of Minnesota’s $1.4 billion gambling profits,” the report adds, “The tribe has used the money to generous donations to other Indian tribes — lending money and giving grants. It’s always used the money to gain clout in the community.”

Since 1996, the tribe has donated approximately $243 million to charity and lent about $478 million.

But a few of the tribal elders worry that the massive profits raked in from the casinos and resorts will spoil the younger generations and rob them of their understanding of the value of money.

“Why dig a hole when you don’t need to dig it — when you can pay someone to dig a hole?’ tribe secretary and treasurer Keith B Anderson told the New York Times.

“Instead of budgeting a dinner and movie, you can go to dinner and a movie and have dinner again and see another movie, but you can’t see enough movies and dinners to spend all your money,” he adds.

Re: “The payouts are the windfall from lucrative casinos and resorts that the tribe runs on its reservation in Scott County — about 45 minutes southwest of Minneapolis-St Paul,” the Daily Mail reports.

On the surface these payouts are a return on investments that members of the Shakopee Mdewakanton tribe are owed. They are no different than any other investment that is seeing a very high return. However; the fact that this investment return comes from casinos is questionable. Not only do Native American groups have their own social problems, but they are also contributing at large to gambling addiction through their casinos. These tribal members are allowed to spend their payouts in any way they choose. Money soils those who have it unless they use it as opposed to letting the money use them. That is why so many people who have won the lottery are unhappy, caught up in addictions of various kinds, and blow the money they have on stupid things. If someone is happy and grounded when they get a large sum of money there is a good chance they will stay that way after. However; if they aren’t problems are sure to happen. There are many problems within Native American culture that can be exacerbated by just giving such a large amount of money. Loss of traditions is only one of those!

This is no different than welfare. They have 99.2% unemployment? That means the “tribe” just hands over their share of the profits from the casino…they don’t work for their $84,000 a year. Where is their pride? I suppose they have the same mentality as the “welfare queens.” It’s reparations for being kicked out of our country, you owe us, America. That‘s why I don’t claim my 1/64th Blackfoot, 1/32nd Osage and trace Cherokee. I’m American.

It’s even worse, a huge portion of the money flowing through these casino’s into these guys hands is welfare, sold food stamps, and ssi checks. I really don‘t give a damn if people have casino’s, but the money they gamble sure as hell shouldn’t come from tax payers.

I can see that many of you liberal jerks resent the fact that these Indians are making a fortune. But I’m trying to figure out why. You don’t mind other casino owners making a mint. Why do you not like this particular, specific group – American Indians – making a fortune, when it’s okay for members of another group to make millions. What is the difference between Indians making lots of money and, you know, others making lots of money? Here are my questions:

      - Is it that share their wealth among their themselves, instead of a couple of them being billionaires and the rest being dirt poor? Would it be more palatable to you they didn’t share their fortune with their kin and those they share their heritage?

      - Is it that you simply don‘t think it’s fair that this group, who are as uneducated as you, are making far more money than you?

      - Why do you hate capitalism? What do you have against people making money?

      - Most of the wealthiest in the country are living off of capital gains (which involves not a second of effort), which is taxed at a lower rate than you pay. You don’t begrudge them those riches for doing nothing except already being rich, why do think it’s wrong for a minority group to do the same?

      - What do you have against people living well? Do you have some class warfare hangup? You don’t like others doing better than you are?

With all due respect Jennifer……I do not mind the native Americans doing whatever they can legally do to make money. And instead of blaming the Indians for anything…I would submit that this entire Indian Casino business all over the country is just yet another Federal Government program gone bad.
I am not a native American unlike Elizabeth Warren……and yet every penny the native Americans can squeeze out of Uncle Sam…is one less penny Uncle Sam can use to find something he wants to take from the rest of us. I see you try to make this a moral and social issue…..which is not possible because this mess started as a Federal program…which means that it is most likely amoral from the get go.

I did read that they sit on their butts with 99.2% unemployment. Who actually works at the casino? Outside people? Then the casino rakes in even more money because they would have to pay the people who actually work. Do they get minimum wage so that the Indians can get their $84,000 a month? I personally don’t believe in any casinos. I think it brings in th wrong crowd and causes addictin. Most of the people who go to casinos can’t afford to lose that money, and are hoping for a windfall so they don’t have to ever work again. I also don’t buy lottery tickets for the same reason.

JZS, you are missing one key factor relating to Indian casinos in Minnesota: they have a monopoly here. No entity other than Indian tribes may operate casinos in Minnesota. I do not resent them for making a mint. In fact, there are that many fewer on welfare, and they do spend their money quite freely, which helps the local economy. To answer your questions, no, I have no problem with Indians sharing the wealth among members of their own tribe. That’s actually pretty cool. I think you are wrong to suggest that these Native Americans are uneducated, or that there is class envy or wealth envy or heritage envy or whatever it is you are promoting. I have to problem with capitalism or people being rich and living well, or anything about the tribes themselves. My sole problem is that the tribes have been granted monopoly rights to the gaming industry. As for Mystic Lake Casino, most of us non gamblers call it Mistake Lake, as the odds are always stacked in favor of the house, or, in this case, the teepee (though I’ve read somewhere that the odds are better at Indian casinos than they are in Los Vegas). But, even so, I don’t mind that a lot of people make the choice to lose money at casinos. Casinos do have good food and good entertainment, so at least they’ve got that going for them.

Yeah, well: this is the United States, which is not yet a nanny state, and hopefully won’t become one. Therefore, it’s up to the individual to figure all these things out for him or her self. It’s a long, messy and painful process, but one learns best from making one’s own mistakes, picking one’s self up, and moving on with life. It helps when one is given the tools one needs to be able to make the right decisions for one’s self, but that’s nowhere guaranteed to happen for anyone.

The Scott County taxpayers have paid to repave these roads many times. I think the casino’s should at least pay back Scott County for the road improvements. But as far as their profits, they can do with them what the want. Their money, their business.

Blacks CAN go back to Africa if they want to.

I’m not saying they SHOULD – or anything remotely close to that – I‘m merely pointing out that we TOOK the Indian’s land and moved in on them – took over.

Whether we lived up to our obligations is a totally different matter. Check out the “Free Health Care System” that many natives enjoy. She’s 1/8th Osage (yes, that makes me 1/16th…I had it wrong when I said 1/32nd), but my Great-Grandpa’s records were burned when his town burned down. Admittedly, she wanted the natural gas rights. They get paid by the government for the natual gas on their land. So don‘t think they don’t get reparations. But in order to get the gas rights, she would have had to live on the reservation, and have that as her only income. It wasn’ that much. Trust me, free money is abused more often than money you actually work for.

I would challenge you to look at the problems that already exist within Native American tribes as a result of government intrusion. They are the poster child for living proof that the government has no place simply giving $ to people. It does not fix the underlying issues that exist and in many cases makes them worse. Drug/alcohol abuse, domestic violence, poverty, education levels, none of those issues can be addressed by throwing money at a problem and saying you have “helped” a minority.

I am sure a garden would look lovely on the reservation amongst the dilapidated and abandoned houses! I am sure there is plenty of game to hunt on the reservation too! Do you can all of your food? Do you have your own garden? Do you hunt and fish for all of your meat? What about building a solid structure to live in? Did you build the house you live in?

Funny. I once had this idea to write a story entitled Planet of The Aborigines where white astronauts crash land on Earth 2000 years from now and find that the Indians have taken back all the lands and the whites are now concidered to be the poor savages. (An obvious play off of Planet of the Apes). Well, after reading this article, I have to say, maybe this is how it all plays out….

Actually they don’t pay any Federal income tax and I doubt that their state taxes them either. Damn, time for another American – Indian War methinks.

Until recently they were forced to live like dogs. Funny, no post showing your concern for their well being.Let them do a little better in life and ol’ White *******,“ THE FEARFUL JACKAL” stands up spit’en crumbs and spilling beer, demanding there be another war.

Just out of curiosity. How many beer can’s you crush on your cranial bone after reading this article?

After what our predecessors did to the Indian culture, I am very glad to see this group doing so well. ‘another war’ I think not. I have a difficult time coming to terms with how the native Americans were treated, and hope this good fortune continues.

It may be time for them to start paying their “fair share” to the US government. How many years of not paying taxes does it take to make up for us kicking them off their land? At a million per person, it shouldn’t take long.
I thought Obama said the wealthy needed to pay their fair share anyway, or does that only apply to white people?

Genocide and conquest — a million a year to just 400 people does not make up for it by any stretch.

An Indian tribe tried to impose a 10% sales tax on alcohol sold by white American business owners on land they disputed was their own near a reservation in northeast Nebraska. Somehow the courts have failed to rule in over 10 years of litigation and lawyer fees, which the community voted for a 1 percent increase in local sales tax to help fight the absurdity of it all. Taxing gasoline sales was next on the tribe’s agenda. Where was anyone in the national media on this story? Not only is this a nation operating within a nation, but they’re also trying to impose taxes on people of different racial decent without representation. What were the American Revolution, Civil War and numerous Indian wars fought for if the state of Nebraska and the U.S. government can‘t decide if they’re going to allow this in fear of setting off a firestorm in the liberal media? Perhaps someone with any moral integrity should take a stroll through Omaha “nation” and report on what a real welfare state looks like. If the crumbling Olympic facilities in Beijing deserve special attention from the Blaze, maybe they should take a look at millions of U.S. dollars going to waste right here in plain sight…

@A20O47: You are 100% correct, my friend. My long term ladyfriend is a native American, and they do deserve all the good that comes their way. One example is as follows, when she was a girl, when native American children went to the dentist, the dentist did not fill cavities, he extracted the affected tooth. “Indian teeth aren’t worth saving”. This was the attitude of the 60s and 70s, and probably more recently. I have many other examples of such treatment under the BIA of the past. No, her parents were not bums, they were both blue collar, however, our gov’t and media had done such an effective job of smearing their culture, they accepted such treatment. Thank Goodness for the Casinos they now have. The modernizing of their culture has been both good and bad, but thank God they are able to improve their lives, and may they be fortunate enough to educate the upcoming generation in a good way. I can still remember how the media treated the Indians when I was growing up, (remember those savages on ‘Gunsmoke’, for example?) I‘m fortunate that the media wasn’t poisoning people of my ancestry, I guess…

      The buffet there was fantastic.

I recall asking some staffers there how many were from the “Tribe” and the manager replied that the tribe was so rich, that they retired, so he was able to get that job.

After dinner, we got gasoline near the casino for about $ 0.40 less / gallon than the metro Minneapolis area.

Their casino gave me free parking for 4 hrs, and I still have some of the single use sanitary wet wipes they gave me as a souvenier.

In Obama’s home town, parking is costly , 7 days a wk until after 9PM.

The workers at the casino also appeared happier and much more productive.

That tribe, throught the generosity of thier casino, has earned my goodwill, while the City of Chicago, a so called “City that Works” has earned my ire. Chicago really made me do a lot of worthless work after they wrongfully towed my truck away.

Only one caveat, 99.9% of the time it doesn’t work out very well. Then they come back again when the get there next paycheck or borrow more money only to find it still doesn’t work out very well. Then it repeats itself again. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. I guess a lot of people are insane. Case in point some how Obama got in the White House.
