Everything Begins With an Idea: Beck Explains Why Americans Have the Power to ‘Create’

Do you remember a time when television programs and movies were only broadcast in black and white? Do you recall the days of eight-tracks, or vinyl records, or perhaps just compact disks? Technology advances exponentially, and what were marvels of the modern world 10, 20, or even 50 years ago, now seem like nothing more than relics. After all, what is an old cassette player next to the sleek iPod? How can the cinematic experience of watching an old black and white film ever compare to the lifelike quality of crisp, digital high definition footage? Yet old or new, all of these innovations have at least one thing in common — they were created by man, out of the sheer imagination and intelligence with which he was born.

Over the course of the past week, Glenn Beck introduced GBTV viewers, as well as Blaze readers, to a new initiative comprising four simple steps aimed at committing, activating, living our values, and finally, to “creating” something tangible in the field of innovation — be it art, music or simply an entrepreneurial endeavor.

Below, Beck explores the depth of America’s long and rich history of invention:

Below, Beck asks why we are punishing the creators, innovators, and entrepreneurs of society. After all, they are the ones who have contributed so much, from the telephone, to the motion picture, to the iPad and everything big and small and in between.

GlennBeck.com provides additional details on the Beck’s goal:

So he [Beck] came up with a solution – one that involves him working with artists and musicians in aggressively pushing back with messages of hope and goodness. And, most importantly, he encouraged viewers to join him, not as passive observers but as active artists and creators in whatever way they could.

“America has always been about creating and doing,” Glenn said as welcomed people to the final night of special shows focusing on fixing the country.

Taking a break from the news of the day, Glenn chose to instead reflect on the history of American ingenuity to start the show. He ran through some of the incredible American inventions – focusing on everything from Edison and the Kinetoscope to the iPad.

“Edison saw the good in the invention. He was an amazing man — he never stopped thinking and trying — no matter how preposterous the idea seemed. For example, he actually tried to make concrete furniture such as beds and chairs. Even concrete pianos. Needless to say that one didn’t work out, and neither did his ‘mechanical cigar’. But that didn’t stop him. He once said, ‘I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.’ He just kept creating, and sometimes he got it right.”

“He’s also is the first to record the human voice,” Glenn said.

Beck discussed the unsettling fact that numerous Billboard Top 100 songs are titled with four-letter expletives while network television programs sexualize teenagers. Conversely, Beck noted that programs that discuss the existence of God, faith and the importance of family are berated  Meanwhile, shows that talk about God, faith, and family have been left behind, and left to the sidelines. He even shared his own experience of professional difficulty.

“I’ve actually lost (radio) affiliates because they say I talk about God,” Beck confessed.

He noted that while conservatives don’t like where society is headed culturally, they perhaps don’t do enough to actually change the system.

“This is the one area where we’ve abandoned our entrepreneurial spirit. Instead of being like Edison and trying 10,000 ways to be part of the solution we just throw our hands up in the air and wave the white flag.”

“We’re against something instead of being for something. And meanwhile, artists are thrust into a toxic atmosphere where if they aren’t willing to live on the cutting edge of culture and create filth you don’t get a job.”

“Why are we just giving the culture over to those who seek to promote filth? Why are we just complaining about it? How about we do something about it. Yes! That’s what we are going to do here. Create.”

“This day is the biggest challenge of all four and arguably the most important.” .

Beck also discussed his plans to engage musicians and movie makers who embrace a positive message — one that celebrates faith and American values. With that, he gave viewers a glimpse at the ways in which GBTV and Mercury are going to fight the degradation of society through creation.

    Robert A. Heinlein, Robert E. Howard, and Ray Bradbury. What do these three authors have in common? Robert A. Heinlein wrote a story for the American Legion magazine called The Long Watch.
    It was originally called Rebellion On The Moon. The American Legion didn’t like the title so Heinlein
    changed it. The Long Watch is about Lieutenant John Ezra Dahlquist, a bomb officer in the Inter-planetary Patrol who dies of radiation poisoning. Robert E. Howard, who created Conan the Barbarian,
    defied convention, by writing strong, independent women. Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451, a book
    about firefighters who burn books. Why? Because as he said, he wrote it as a warning about the rise of
    television.

      An appropriate name. Something you’re missing here though, is that Glenn constantly promotes people to do their own research. He promotes people to buy and read books, to educate themselves and to be a better person. You’re right that his doctrine is fearful, but not hateful, which has it’s roots in his belief system. As an atheist, I do not submit to a naturally fearful position (reverence of God) as most of Glenn’s audience does, but I certainly observe and appreciate it‘s importance in today’s society. When looking at other pundits and newscasters, Glenn is much more admirable as a person.

    Beck is right. What made America a world industrial leader was a large number of inventions and an economic environment that was not over regulated by the government. Starting and growing a business is becoming more and more difficult to do. Any inventions created in the USA now, are going to be manufactured in China too. That is not going to work. We need less regulation, lower minimum wage, less gov mandates.

      The United States, after World War 2, had no competition as Europe lay in total ruin. They were our primary market because they needed everything we could produce. With cheap and plentiful sources of energy, abundant natural resources, and a willing work force we became the leading industrial manufacturer in the world. What has changed? We still have the largest coal reserves in the world, our supply of oil is larger than all the reserves in the Middle East, we don’t build any more dams but still derive a huge amount of energy from the ones we have, still have some nuclear power plants. Have we used up all our copper, iron ore, deposits of rare minerals? No, we haven’t, they’re still there. Perhaps we don’t have the people to do all these jobs? No, we have millions of unemployed who really want a job, any job……What’s the problem? What has changed in the last sixty years? There is only one entity large enough and powerful enough to change the entire economy and our society and that is the Federal Government. The growth of the government has kept pace with the decline and loss of American manufacturing. Unlimited growth of government, over-regulation of the economy and the environment, restricting the use of cheap energy, oil and coal, and the constant emphasis on the “global economy” with no regard for the domestic economy has allowed the exporting of our technology and our jobs. Drastically cut the size and scope of the Federal Government and change our future.

    Do we really want to be like Edison? Edison the inventor was one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived, but Edison the entrepreneur was kind of a typical dirtbag. He profited from the innovations of his assistants without cutting them in for a fair share, and he ruthlessly tried to crush and slander his rivals.

Just imagine the Gov. getting out of your pocket, and not redistributing your hard earned money. That you donate to who you want, and return charitable giving, back to the people.
    Now we need to, rein in, and eliminate all these gov. agencies, that are intruding on our very way of life to benefit the elite, the IMF, and the NWO. I dont believe that americans are inherently better than the rest of the world. I believe America WAS unique because for the first time, humans were free from the chains of oppression and violence and set forth a system of rules for protection. I believe this from reading a book Glenn Beck used to talk about called “the 5000 year leap”. I see that Glenn has moved on to other things that appear to be ego driven – but he should return to basics.

    To get back EVERYTHING, we must restore the republic. Freedom to create can only be achieved when people have person freedom as well as financial freedom

      I can’t help but comment on this remark. Beck says, “I’ve actually lost (radio) affiliates because they say I talk about God.” No, he has lost no affiliates because he talked about God. Please. That’s bearing false witness. A lie in other words. Affiliates only care about making a profit, not religion. Beck lost his FOX show, not because he “talked about God,” but because his viewers – FOX viewers remember – left his show and all his advertisers dropped him because he offended so many of their target audience.

      Sadly, if this current trend continues, the US will have fewer and fewer people able to express their creativity. Other countries, especially in Europe but in Asia too, spend money on early education as well as later education and make it easy for promising students to get a college education.

      The US is busy doing the opposite: eliminating education programs for the poor, reducing pay for teachers (the really good ones will leave the profession for something more profitable) reducing money for intermediate education and making it ever harder for students who want to go to college to get a student loan.

      What does that do? It reduces the pool of Americans who have a chance to “create” and get the education they need to keep America exceptional.

      Other countries are investing in the education of their young. The US is cutting education to pay for tax breaks for the richest.

He lost radio affiliates not because he talked about God on the radio or CNN or FNC but, because he talks about God on GBTV and some radio affiliates dropped him for that. Radio stations don’t care about content. They care about profits. Maybe you’re a communist – you sure sound like one. Radio station are trying to make a profit. If Beck was dropped from a radio station, it’s because they had a more profitable alternative. You’re fooling yourself.

      Monk, this is America and we are a capitalist country, not the communist country you evidently wish we were. Radio station are in the business of maximizing profits. If Beck was dropped it was because some other show offered better profits from their advertisors.

      JZS, while you were happily watching your tax dollars being sent to abortion mills, I was happily sending a check to Scott Walker.

      Your tax money helped eliminate lives. Most likely future liberal lives.

      Isn’t it odd JZS, how most conservatives prefer that most liberals would not self exterminate themselves, even though it would hamper their own future political agenda?

      While at the same time, liberals fight for the right to kill their own offspring, even to their own detriment.

      Care to offer up your take on how you might consider that to be logical,…..or moral?

      Sorry for my digression.

      Amen to that. Anyone that’s seriously interested in restoring our long-lost liberty back to America will support and vote for the only Constitutionalist candidate that’s serious in doing away with the burdensome, un-Constitutional government institutions such as the FDA, the U.S. Department of Education, and abolishing the nonsensical drug war, exercise a $ 1 TRILLION cut within his first year of his presidency, and put an end to all the undeclared, unjustifiable wars. Glenn Beck’s E4 plan, while it is, in some cases, good for helping out impoverished communities to some extent, it won’t be of any help in fixing the corruption that still occurs within the federal and state levels of our government. Sadly, many, if not most, of these Blazers such as GardenoftheGods and Patty Henry seem to think that voting for “the lesser of two evils candidate” such as flip-flopping NDAA supporter Mitt Romney will be the answer to the problems of our tyrannical government, but that won’t matter in the end, anyway, as they will only have themselves to blame if he’s beaten by Barack Obama in the general election or if Mitt ends up catering to the big banks that financed his campaign.

    What does this do to EXPOSE the REPUBLICAN/DEMOCRAT leadership, BY NAME, who have grown the UNCONSTITUTIONAL MONSTER that Beck CLAIMS to want slain?

    Why does all of this revolve around the Beck brand?

    Why does this connect to FAKE-TEA GOP groups like FreedomWorks?

    What does this do to analyze the “forgone conclusion” republican nominee’s POV on shrinking (OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGING) unconstitutional government programs?

    What does it do to DEMAND that the “forgone conclusion” republican nominee REPEAL UNCONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS?

    WHAT DOES THIS DO TO RESTORE CONSTITUTIONAL LAW AND LIBERTY?!?!?!?!?!?!

      I hope you get rid of the blinders soon. First we rebuild ourselves. Romney is going to be fine. Nothing about what we’re doing is anything like the past 50 years, thank GOD….. Ron has his chance and he didn’t take it. Now it’s time to move over for the Patriots.

      @PATTY HENRY

      WE DON’T NEED TO REBUILD OURSELVES!!!!!!
      We need to restore CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, by FLUSHING OUT THE LEFTIST REPUBLICAN PARTY AND LEFTIST DEMOCRAT PARTY FROM OUR GOVERNMENT! NOW!!!!!!!!!!

      I have been DOING SOMETHING for decades by building/supporting/financing The Constitution Party. I voted Peroutka in 04 and Baldwin in 08 (after the LEFTIST republican party cheated out Ron Paul). I vote for Constitution Party and Libertarian Party for Congressional seats.

      Beck, on the other hand, SMOTHERS THIS GOOD WORK, by DISTRACTING NAIVE AMERICANS AND TRICKING THEM INTO VOTING FOR LEFTIST REPUBLICANS. He will DISGUSTINGLY call himself a “libertarian” but will concoct multiple reasons TO SUPPORT LEFTIST REPUBLICANS. His SOLE INTENTION is to PRETEND like nothing can be done now (A LIE) and will design “plans” meant for “tomorrow.” It’s a simple stall tactic. He is the hypnotizing, DISTRACTING, flickering tongue of a LEFTIST democrat/republican python that has almost coiled itself around America to the point of incapacitation!

      WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I thought the segment on tech/ideas was great, and more important that Glenn attempts to balance the fact that Science/technology can never answer the questions of humanity and what it is to be a human being, only belief in something bigger then ourselves can keep us grounded.

      I as an individual believe in an ideology that keeps me grounded in human instinct, while you worship at the altar of an ideology that has debased mankind for the last hundred years, longer if you take it back to the point before it was named Communism.

      I’m making a “What would you do if you can start America over in another planet” Science Fiction series. Does that look untalented and boring to you?

    I am so glad Glenn is promoting this and encouraging everyone to be a part of creating good things once again. I refuse to go to the movies, watch most TV, watch sports, listen to most music for the reasons Glenn has stated. They are almost all filth promoting, degrading, sexualized, foul mouthed “creations” and I refuse to pay money to these folks who, in turn, give their earnings to the likes of Barack Obama and his Marxist, Socialist endeavors. Never! I WILL NOT COMPLY!

      GOOD GRIEF!!! GLENN has EVOLVED into this AMAZING ENERGY SOURCE…and anyone who is not watching GBTV is just plain nuts. You can watch it on your flatscreen, or if you work on a computer most of the day, you can watch it (listen to it) while you work, work, work) I love the RADIO show in the AM, I’m on W. Coast so I have to wait until 9:30 to get the Morning show, then after all of that, I can
      watch LIBERTY TREE house…I know it’s made for kids, but it’s like an amazing Learning Program..and so enjoyable to watch. I keep track of the dates I think are SOOOOOO special and then when my Grandchildren come over, we watch and watch and watch. Then his ‘5 PM” TWO hour show finally gives him enough time to DEVELOP his ideas. HIS GUESTS are the top of the heap. What he is doing now has simply been inspired and lead by GOD. You will know that the instant you tune in. $ 9.99 a month? The only other thing I watch is some news and football when it’s on… IF YOU ARE SICK AND TIRED of the world we live in…THEN JUMP ON BOARD!!! YOU will love it. LET the SOROS paid trolls try to convince everyone that Beck is a nut, that we’re lemmings…yeah, right… Keep on trollin’ Geo. … we’ve got this country turning into the RIGHT direction and there is room for all PATRIOTS !!! GOD BLESS AMERICA !! I say: GOD BLESS GOD !!!

      Patty: You can make whatever you want of Glenn Beck. You speak of him becoming this amazing energy source. You sound just like the folks bedazzled by the faith-healers in the 1930′s in the South. They were obviously quacks back then and Glenn is an equally large fraud now, IMHO, of course. And, as I always like to add when I see excessive patriotism…“ Patriotism is the last refuge of a SCOUNDREL”. Samuel Johnson (Boswell’s Life of Johnson)

      THINGS DON’T GET BETTER….Except what we’re are getting ready to do as a Nation. I love this AMERICA in a way I can’t describe (Like most of you) but until I found Glenn Beck in 2009, I thought 99% of you were ready to accept the B.S. that the far left and fools like Soros were selling us… then
      April 15 came… Then on his show I saw photos sent in by thousands of people, and it began to dawn on me that there were 75% of the people who lived in the USA who were PATRIOTS…all ages, colors, sizes, backgrounds, educational levels and Religious Beliefs. (The Only Atheist who may qualify is Penn Gillette…I think he’s just disgusted, not anti-God…I pray that he knows GOD for real before he’s done). HAVING BEEN BRUISED and had the hell scared out of us lately, there is no ceiling any of have to look at now…. JOIN GLENN. STAND UP. Gov. Walker’s win is just a taste. THANK YOU GOD!

    All four are just like E4 but better and more to the point.

    Enlightenment = Commit
    Educate = Activate
    Empowerment = Live it
    Entrepreneurship = Create

    E4 always had something missing that needed to be flushed out but the new way solve that and lets hope it goes all the way. Entrepreneurship always was missing something but when it come down to simply create it solves what was the original intent.

      When you go to the supermarket and see NEW emblazoned on the packaging do you think it is something better?

      Nowadays the only thing new is the portions are smaller.

      A couple of those E’s were troubling
      Educate— well that’s really not something the far right has ever been in favor of.
      Enlightenment and Empowerment—- sounds suspicious isn‘t that what those women’s libbers were always shouting about.
      Entreprenuership— Well how can the ruling elite control you if you are not their slave working for them.

      So like you say , it’s the same old same old with a NEW sticker slapped on the front.
