Ex-Evangelical Lib: Catholic Church Speaking on Sexual Morality ‘Is Like Being Lectured by the KKK on Race Relations’

Frank Schaeffer (son of theologian and author Francis Schaeffer) is, perhaps, the nation’s most critical ex-evangelical commentators, as he seeks to insult, debunk and take aim at conservative Christianity on a near-daily basis. Over the past year, The Blaze has documented some of his intense rhetoric. In a blog post published Tuesday, Schaeffer lambasted the Catholic Church and “evangelical Taliban” who he sees as villains in the current debate about religious freedom here in America.

Frank Schaeffer Makes Catholic Church & KKK Analogy

Predictably, the piece dismisses Catholic angst over the Obama administration’s contraceptive mandate and goes on to predominately target Robert George, a Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University. Schaeffer writes:

The bishops have been led to attack the President by Republican operative/Professor/anti-abortion activist Robert George of Princeton University. He has achieved this through his close association with Charles Colson, evangelical far right leader and Watergate felon.

They laid their deliberate trap for the President by writing something called the Manhattan Declaration, an anti-Obama document (that never mentions the president by name) signed by hundreds of evangelical leaders and the Roman Catholic bishops.

Non-Evangelicals with political agendas like Robert George have cashed in on the Evangelicals’ willingness to lend their numbers and influence to one moral crusade after another, or rather I should say, to one political crusade after another masquerading as moral crusades.

Throughout the piece, the ex-evangelical critic referred to those accepting George’s Manhattan Declaration as “extremists.” Schaeffer’s attack on George, a Roman Catholic, devolved into a critique of the Catholic Church that is sure to infuriate many Christians.

While arguing in his blog post that it is inappropriate for individuals to cast judgements on others’ sex lives, Schaeffer said that this sentiment was specifically true for “the international pedophile ring otherwise known as the Roman Catholic Church.” He continued:

When it comes to pointing the finger over sexual “sin,” the worldwide Christian community—from the halls of the Vatican and many a Greek, Russian, or Arab Orthodox bishop’s palace, to an Evangelical “home church” established in somebody’s basement two minutes ago—is in the morally compromised position of a violent habitual rapist criticizing a shoplifter for stealing a candy bar.

But he wasn’t done there. He also claimed that seeing Catholic bishops stand up and make proclamations about sexual morality “is like being lectured by the KKK on race relations.” To corroborate this point, he went on to highlight cases of abuse that, in his view, apparently define the Catholic Church as a whole.

Schaeffer was apparently very proud of these comments, as he also tweeted about the KKK and the Catholic Church following the publication of his blog post:

Frank Schaeffer Makes Catholic Church & KKK Analogy

He concluded the piece by dismissing the contraceptive mandate and alluding to the fact that it isn’t a religious liberty issue. Instead, he called it “the right to deny women choice and even contraceptives.” Then, he called GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum a clone of George.

On Tuesday evening, Schaeffer was also invited to appear on the Rev. Al Sharpton’s “PoliticsNation” on MSNBC, where he spoke about the GOP and its purported misuse and abuse of the contraceptive mandate. Additionally, he commented about the purportedly calculated “attack” on Obama’s faith.

“This is a well-orchestrated campaign by the religious right that has infultrated the Republican Party,” he said.

During this interview he also targeted George and, once again, said that the Manhattan Declaration laid the groundwork for what he dubbed a “well-laid trap.”

“This whole religious freedom cry that‘s going up now didn’t just suddenly happen,” Schaeffer proclaimed. “They have been on a fishing expedition, trying to label this president first as a Muslim, then as a communist, then as a non-Christian, then as a secularist, and now all of the sudden he’s anti-religious, because he’s telling people that have insurance policies in this country that they have to give women contraceptives.”

Watch the appearance, below:

Despite overtly harsh commentary about Catholics and evangelicals, alike, MSNBC continues to invite the critic on-air to share his views. According to his Twitter feed, Schaeffer will appear on the “Martin Bashir” show today.

This should be simple enough that even you will understand:

An organization, such as a CATHOLIC HOSPITAL must keep within the moral teaching of the CATHOLIC CHURCH if it wishes to maintain the description of CATHOLIC in its name. To that end, the hospital cannot provide substances or treatments for birth control or abortifacients. Morally the hospital cannot provide funds in insurance premiums to provide these illicit services either. The hospital would be morally complicit if they did so.

No one forces a anybody to work at a CATHOLIC Hospital or organization. They choose to work there by their own free will. By choosing to work at a CATHOLIC organization, they abide by the culture within that organization. If they oppose this morality, they can quit their job and go work elsewhere.

It can’t be any easier than that!

    ********************

Then if they dont want to be told what to do and want to follow their teachings they shouldnt accept federal $$. If you do then good chance they have a right to tell you what to do. I am sure the pope can sacrifice his $500 loafers and his benz and help out the hospitals so they can remain true to their beliefs right?

They don‘t take federal money for services they don’t provide. They do take money for services that we do provide. Why is this so hard for you to deal with?

Face it. You are a bigot. Otherwise you would not have a problem with this.

I think the Gentleman (one of few men) may have a point here. We do not allow ANY religious organization to dictate common law. (Otherwise we would have a sharia law exemption for honor killings by devout Muslims, or allow polygamy for those of the Mormon race.)

It is refreshing to have a real male take the female point of view and defend our American values that we are individually religiously accountable, and not religiously accountable to any Church.

Whose $$$? Where does the Fed Gov’t get those $$$? Can Catholic Hospitals turn away a patient w/ gov’t healthcare (medicare/medicaid)?

Wise up. This has nothing to do w/ BC. It is evil – pure & simple, but you are too blind to see it. At least the Pope spoke out when the “humanists” tortured Terri Schiavo to death.

Malachi 2:17 You have wearied the LORD with your words; “Yet you say, “In what way have we wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil Is good in the sight of the LORD, And He delights in them,” Or, “Where is the God of justice?”

Frankie has been begging for attention since the early 80s. Even before, really. He wanted to be a film maker and was a flop. He wrote a disastrous book, called, “Addicted To Mediocrity” (which was at best, mediocre) about Christians and the Arts. I heard him speak for a week one hour at a Christian College in Missouri where I was teaching, and was awestruck by his inability to communicate.

His father was a beloved scholar and philosopher. Frankie wanted to follow in his footsteps but had neither the skills nor the fire. When his ‘talent’ was not accepted by the Christian community, he walked away. He is still seeking his fifteen minutes of fame, but remains irrelevant. He is an angry, bitter man. It’s sad really. He is worthy of pity, even as he spews his vitriol.

Rather than listening to talking heads with an agenda I did my own research. One of my friends has a wife that works at a catholic hospital in the DC merto area. She isnt a catholic, just a nurse that needed a job, so i asked her hwo she felt about this. She said it would be great but too late for her since she left the catholic hospital and is working at another one that will cover her BC costs.

THis is the problem, we listen to those with agenda’s rather than the ones who it would actually effect, talk to them and you will see this hwo foolish this actually has gotten. Plu sif you think about it, she isnt religious but is forced by her employer to follow their religious doctrine that BC is bad. So what about her freedom of religion?

Besides, if you dont want to take BC and it goes agasint your beleif, fine dont take it. But dont let your myopic view of the world intrude on others. Jusat like those opposed to gay marrige, if you are opposed to it dont marry a gay person. Problem solved.

Since when is BC a health issue? Who’s health is at risk & what disease/ailment would they be getting treated for that health insurance should have to cover it?

Furthermore formularies pick & choose regularly what they will & won’t cover. Regularly we are told which brands (& in some cases types) of medication we can & cannot be prescribed, what treatments will & won’t be covered – yet the man who claims to be a “Christian” (& thanks for clarifying for us Al & Frank that we shouldn’t judge a man’s fruit – Christ was obviously wrong, but what does He know? We got you two to keep us on our game) – who’s never yet heard of an abortion that shouldn’t be legal or a Commandment that wasn’t meant to be broken – is now going to tell us to violate our conscience & like it.

So now the death loving (ala Terri Schiavo), God-haters can tell insurance companies & businesses what recreational activities they must pay for – but the Gov’t can deny someone life-saving surgery because of cost and dehydrate/starve to death a woman – for humanities sake.

This has nothing to do w/ access to BC & everything to do w/ undermining the Word of God, the Constitution, men’s consciences, & to promote a hedonistic society built on amoral shifting sands. Abortion is next.

“Evangelical Taliban”!! What a great way of describing it. This “evangelical” concept hijacked the Republican party during the Reagan days. The similarities between evangelicals and the Taliban are remarkable.

Both think their way of thinking is the only and correct way.

Don’t believe what they do? Burning in hell.

They have that particular type of arrogance, as if they know just a little more about the universe, which they don’t.

Evangelicals would slaughter non believers just like the Taliban if they could get away with it.

Both groups are full of hatemonger’s, but attempt to justify it by quoting religious texts

How very sad about Frank Schaeffer. His father, Francis Schaeffer, really WAS a brilliant Christian apologist. Absolutely brilliant. Read anything he wrote. Anything. What happened to sonny-boy, Frank, is the great question. He has thrown his lot in with Obama. How shocking, but it happens to some of the greatest Christian thinkers’ offspring sometimes. Case in point. I, for one, won’t miss Frank Schaeffer AT ALL. What a disappointment HE is.

However, one must make the same question about Ron Reagan, President Reagan’s son. He’s another one that you have to wonder “what the hell happened?” Only Michael Reagan has proven to be a strong advocate for the Right. Ronnie is weak, weaker, weakest still.

That comment about Ron Reagan Jr being “gay” was uncalled for. So ALL gay men know how to touch their toes? If you think that being gay is about anal sex, you are definitely ignorant & need to talk to more gay folks. The first thing that came to my mind at age 12 when I first noticed my attraction to my sexy manly gym teacher and a few of my straight male classmates, whom I developed crushes on, was not: “hmmm, I wonder who I’d like to be the first to pork me?”. Why do most conservatives seem obsessed with anal sex?! Not all gay men engage in it anyway. It’s personal taste.

Anyway, that is besides the point. I have been wanting to leave the Democratic Party for YEARS, now that I am becoming more familiar with the conservative viewpoint and about self-sufficiency and small government, but you know what keeps me from moving to the more enlightened side? The intolerance and ****-hating from people such as yourselves. I mean, isn’t small government about freedom? I am not saying all conservatives have to agree with homosexuality; just as I don’t agree about organized religion (of which I despise, to be honest), but can‘t we just agree to get along and respect each other’s personal choices, as long as they don’t hurt other people? The anti-gay view is keeping monogamous, respectful gay people from joining your ranks. Frank Schaeffer is right when he says the party has been hi-jacked by religious intolerance for other faiths & non-believers as well.

The Catholic Church is the largest giving in terms of organizations in the US. Catholic priests and religious care for people in parts of the world where most people fear to tread. But this hater condemns the entire church for the actions of a few relative to the size of the organization.

This is like saying that all men are child molesters, because a lot of men have done it! So, men cannot talk about having children.
Or, like saying all women are whores! So they can’t talk about anything but sex.
