Exclusive: TheBlaze Interviews Deli Owner Who Wore ‘Government Didn’t Build My Business, I Did’ Shirt While Catering For President

Ross Murty Interview About His Government Didnt Build That T Shirt

(Photo: Submitted)

Ross Murty, a small business owner of the Village Corner Deli in Davenport, Iowa, won’t turn down a catering gig, even if he completely disagrees with his client.  On Wednesday afternoon that client was the President’s press corp. And while Murty has immense reservations over Obama’s recent “You didn’t build that” comments, he kept quite and let his shirt do the talking.

Ross Murty Interview About His Government Didnt Build That T Shirt

Romney Campaign T-Shirt

“I had been wanting to buy one of those shirts before,” Murty told TheBlaze in an exclusive interview, “this just seemed like the right time to bring it out.”  The shirt reads “Government Didn’t Build My Business, I Did,” and Murty believes every word of it.

Murty has been in the restaurant business for 25 years and started his Deli just five years ago as a start-up venture with a partner.  When asked about the president’s comments that inspired the shirt, he didn’t hold back.

“I felt the comments were not only uninformed but uneducated.  Basically coming from someone who has had zero business experience, who has no idea what a business owner does in a typical day. What kind of financial risk they take to start a business.  What personal sacrifices they make to stay in business.”

Murty clarified that “the indictment is not on him personally, it‘s on the job that he’s doing and the job that he was never qualified to do.”

Ross Murty Interview About His Government Didnt Build That T Shirt

The Inquisitr

When asked what he would have said to the President were he to have met him with the shirt on, he said he would have wanted to “sit down and have a thoughtful conversation,” and would have educated the president on the actual struggles of a small business owner.

“Possibly he could learn a few things about sacrifice that business owners make and financial risk that they take and what they actually do bring to the table for this country. Whether somebody was successful it is the fruits of their labor,” he said, before adding that people “of course” help each other but it’s “certainly not the government” who can claim the credit for it.

“The only time the government came to do anything for me was with their hand out,“ Murty said ”A fee for this, a fee for that.”  Murty boiled it down by saying “the Government gets in the way.”

When asked about the Obama defense that “roads and bridges” were built by the government, he quickly responded: “with our tax money.”

“That money just didn’t come out of thin air,” he noted, “that money came from tax payers.  So it’s not that the government just out of the goodness of its heart built all this stuff. We the taxpayers payed for it.”

In a final question we asked Murty if Michelle Obama would have had a problem with the food he was serving. He chuckles and says,”Yes I do.“ But he adds that the press corps ”loved it.”

The gubment helped build your business – by taking the money you earned (taxes) and buildling the roads, etc for your company to survive. Actually, the government doesn’t build them there roads. Private industry does. They take bids from privte companies to design the road. Then another private company builds the road. Private companies then maintain that road. So what does the gubment do? A lot of oversite and very little to do with the actual construction or planning or maintaining of the road. The overbearing gubment needs to go then. Private business can maintain itself.

this administration is so out of touch. this should be tattooed on the liberals at birth :

“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot further brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”

Not sure what people you’re refering to. I‘m sorry you’re so stupid you have a difficult time articulating simple points. But, if your point is the roads would not have been built with out the Government you’re wrong. We elect these people. We tell these represenatives what we want them to do. We send them tax money that we voted on to pay. These representatives have power because we the people gave it to them, and when the day comes we decide that power has been abused we will be the ones to take it back.

so who built all of those roads when towns were popping up in the west? I think the trail was there and people built around the trail to do business with the people passing through. And then when cars became more prevalent the towns/cities decided it was good to pave the trails and call them roads. It was also more sanitary because people did not have to step in manure. Then the state decided it was a good idea to connect the cities and towns with State Highways. Only after WWII did the Federal Government think a Federal Highway system would be a good idea to transport the military. But if I remember correctly, the deal was the Fed’s would build the Highway system and the States would maintain them after they were built. So, technically, the Fed‘s would not exist if it wasn’t for the people who populated the west and the businesses that decided to create cities and towns.

      @huey6367

I think you are forgetting the part where the government taxes you and then puts that money into public works projects, i.e. roads. That is something that would not happen if it were not for the government. Do you really believe that the interstate highway system would have been built were it not for government?

The government taxes you, something you would not willingly pay, and then puts that money towards projects, which you would not do on your own nor would a private business unless it turned it into a toll road.

The competitive bidding process of private companies helps the economy and creates jobs — jobs that would not exist if the government did not tax you and spend that money on roads. Thus, the government building roads creates a whole series of jobs that would not exist without the government.

So, as much as you teabaggers like to say it, no, you did not build those roads, your businesses did not build those roads; the only reason the roads were built is because you were taxed and the government decided to spend it on roads. Yes, your tax dollars go to roads, but that does not mean you built it. If that analogy were true, then everyone who eats at McDonald’s can say that they built any new restaurants since their money went to help finance the new one.

Interestingly, you all won‘t give Obama credit for OBL’s killing, even though he made the final call, but you now all want to take credit for something you would never choose

      Blah Blah Blah!
Yes the government helps build infrastructure but the majority of that is paid for in fuel taxes (which are the only fair tax because you only pay them if you use the roads). Before the 1950′s most roads were privately built by the people living in the area. Developers still have to put in roads themselves when they develop a new area. Teachers, firefighters and police are paid by the state. The taxes he wants to RAISE go 80% to handouts. 80% of our federal budget is entitlement programs. So please explain to me why these people who had the same access to roads, teachers, firefighters, and police and didn’t make something of themselves are entitled to the money from the folks who had the nerve to achieve. This arguement is stupid and liberals sound like morons when they try to defend it. Plain and simple Obama does not believe success is earned, he believes that successful people just got lucky. And thus they are not entitled to the fruits of their labor. Listen to the whole speech in context and that is clearly what he is saying.

Wow! In one sentence you tell me my I am right but then say I am wrong. Also, you came back with a completely unrelated example to try to refute my point. I see Glenn Beck has taught you well.

Private individuals and companies pay for all that stuff that comes along with a strip mall because it is a private development. Tell me, where are strip malls usually developed? Alongside roads built by the government? You see, if it weren’t for the government built roads, it would be difficult for strip malls to exist because no one could get to them.

Obama never said businesses aren’t the fruits of an individuals labor. Rather, he stated that no one can claim that they didn’t have some help along the way. All conservative now have tried to twist his words to make it look as though he said something different. No one is twisting the words that came out of POTUS’s mouth – people are quoting him exactly word for word what he said.

And I am going to jump in with the others and say that you ARE wrong. I don’t care how you twist it. If it wasn’t for TAXABLE income, earned by working or running a business, then the government would not have had the funds to build the infrastructure. (this isn’t a communist dictatorship)

If it wasn’t for continued taxation of earned income, made by working or running a business, then the government wouldn’t have the funds to continue to maintain the vast infrastructure in this country. (this isn’t a dictatorship that uses slave labor)

See what happens to the roads and bridges if every business (or individual) stops paying taxes, everything would break down. (from you being able to buy a loaf of bread to getting to work everyday)

I have a successful small business. One of the tools that I use in my business is a computer. Could I be successful without the computer, probably, but having a computer helps me be more efficient and thus helps me make more money. According to your and Obama’s logic, I now owe the computer manufacturer more money. I paid the same as everyone else for my computer but I used it to become successful so I need to go pay more now. See Obama sees the use of government services as like a parasite. Instead of realizing that the teachers were paid, the road crews compensated, and with tax dollars PAID already (by the successful). And everyone has equal access to these services. So why do the successful succeed, while others don’t. Because they ARE SMARTER, they DO WORK HARDER, and because they take risks that others don’t. If you don’t get it, I can’t help you.

Obama never said the government built anyone’s business, you dimwit. All the President said was that government supports business by building INFRASTRUCTURE (roads, etc.) that business relies on to function. It’s a PARTNERSHIP – government plays their part, business plays their part, and together it’s a win-win.

If you’re a manufacturer that depends on road transport to get your products to customers, perhaps you’d be happier paying for your OWN roads to get them there.

Goldline, you sir, are an idiot. Obama said if you are successful, you didn’t get there by yourself. You owe somebody. A great teacher, etc. He said it isn’t because you are smart, there are a lot of smart people. He said it isn’t because you work hard, there are a lot of people that work hard. BS. I worked hard at my job, made good money and was considered successful. I was not however, independent. While working my job, I also started my own business. Now tell me, are all of the smart, hard working people taking the risk I took for my independence. Did any of these people show up to do either of my jobs? Did the government say, hey, you are trying to start something here, lets lower your tax rates so you can have an easier time. No. I am the one that worked 90+ hours a week, 7 days a week, to build my dream. Nobody helped me, nobody worked harder than me at my business, and nobody was smarter than me at my business, because nobody but me cared for its success. So, when Obama says we are not the reason for our success, you will hopefully now understand the indignation we feel. Nobody, and I mean nobody, cares if we succeed, until we are successful.

The “social fiber” is made up of individuals. That is what this is about. The govt does not produce, it takes. In order for the govt to build a road or give someone “free” healthcare it must first take funds from those who provide goods and services or borrow money in their name, which they will be forced to pay back.

Creation of a successful business is dependent on an enterprising individual takeing and organizing the the relevant components that make up “the extremely complex social fiber” and organizing them in such a way that they will support his creation and allows it to grow.

In other words, an entrepreneur finds something that people want or need and pours in their own money, time and sweat to create a source for them to obtain it. It’s not an accident. Also, if not carefully managed, that creation will die. See Solyndra, a company created to sell a product that nobody needed, for an industry that didn‘t exist using money that didn’t belong to them. That blueprint fits the liberal mantra of “you didn’t build that…” better than anything.

Critical thinking as a skill includes the ability to see the other side of an argument. Look at it this way; yes he is in business because of other people. You can’t have a business without other people. However, his work and effort and ingenuity shapes his particular business. When he sees an opportunity he takes it. Without him, the business would not exist. If he were not the one to build that then it would. But without him, it would not be there. And without him, and others like him, the government would not be there. Businesses as a whole aren’t created out of greed; people actually do have passions to start them simply for the joy of being a business owner. Remember that those people are what the “complex social fiber” is made from. They were not built by the social fiber, they built and they are the social fiber. It would not exist without them, it did not build them; they built the complex social fiber. Their work built it just as their work built government. Society is created by the work of people; society cannot exist without people. You don’t even understand your own quote and you seek to lecture others about the virtues of critical thinking. Or, you may simply be trying to berate others in your arrogance (which is an attribute contradictory to the essence of critical thinking). True, no man is an island, but no island made him a man.

Most new small businesses cannot get bank loans… so for people to think that the money to fund them comes from banks, that is often wrong.

My husband helped start a business… they got all of their money from private donors.

I started my small business with absolutely no money up front.

I had the same opportunities as most people did in this country. I’m not a successful business owner yet… my business still pulls in about 3 figures per month… but I’m working at it. If I succeed, it is not because I had any special opportunity that other people did not have access to. It is because I was willing to stay up late at night and work, for years, all the while averaging less than $1 an hour for my efforts.

Maybe what I do is not everybody’s cup of tea… but there are a lot of things that I tried and failed at that other people could do better than I could. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least four failed business attempts on my part. They just didn’t fit with my skill set. I think that just about everyone, if they really wanted to, could start a business of some sort. Most don’t want to, because often, it can be a lot of hard work for very little pay at the beginning.

Piehole, your stupidity is mind-boggling. You aren‘t even addressing Obama’s statement, which is that government is responsible for everyone’s success. Is government responsible for the stuff that YOU are talking about? (i.e. language) You are deranged if you think you are intellectually superior to ANYONE.

If you are SO intelligent, then lets go to Obama’s statement (which is what this topic is about, NOT the “no man is an island” STUPIDITY that you are babbling about). From whence does government GET their money in order for them to “do” anything “for” anyone? Hmmmmm? The answer is simple. They get it from TAXPAYERS, and the more successful people are, the more taxpayers pay. Success breeds government “action,” not vise versa. Government “action” requires that people be successful in what THEY do.

Yohann, taxation in a self-governing society is a byproduct of the social interactions and activity of humans. You have the option to leave this society, and opt out of taxation. However, you will no longer have access to the stable capitalist economy that exists in this great nation, an economy that only functions because of the willing interactions of the society’s members. Our governments (we have a lot of them, not just one) are simply reflections of our society’s collective values. To say that some business could exist in this society without direct and indirect government protections is very very misguided and stupid.

I commend you with your relatively intelligent answer; however, you failed big time in replying to the topic at-hand, which is Obama’s insistence that BIG government is responsible for the roads, bridges, and schools (which is a false premise). Barack Obama is not running for city councilman or county commissioner. I am VERY MUCH aware that we have dozens of governments that operate at a budget, and they need tax money too. However, Barack Obama was NOT addressing the specific needs for specific communities. He wasn’t even addressing the topic of roads and schools. He was addressing the notion that successful people need to pay more taxes to the Federal government, which is the sole message of his campaign.

Now, how does talking about the supposed “need” for “the rich” to pay more taxes to Washington, DC address schools and roads in your hometown? The answer is, again, SIMPLE. THEY DO NOT.

NOW, let‘s address Obama’s simple-minded notion that “the rich do not pay their fair share.” How is it that the top 10% of earners paying 70% of taxes ISN’T paying their “fair share?” ALSO, what IS “fair” in the mind of Obama? He doesn’t define what “fair” is. Why is that? Maybe you can come up with an answer that’s better than mine, which is collectivists CAN’T define “fair,” because once they do, they won’t be able to raise taxes above that defined rate (because that would be considered by all as “unfair”).

Second, the you didn’t build it quote, is a GOP lie. They have stripped the context out of the statement and recast it as a lie. The Deli owner didn’t build the roads, didn’t build the schools, isn’t providing fire or police protection. It would be like Romney telling Olympians that they didn’t make it to the games own their own.

I’ll agree that it was taken a little out of context. But the point he was trying to make is one that I’ve heard liberals spout many times. They try to accuse conservatives of not wanting any government, and they go on to extrapolate that if any amount of government is good, then big government is better. It’s a straw man argument, because no conservatives say we shouldn’t have any government. We agree that there are some legitimate functions of government. Defense, security, and roads, to name a few. There are also things the government has no business getting into (healthcare). The “you didn’t build that” argument plays well to his base, but not to center and right people.

You want Barry to be on that level. Unfortunately, our current president is a Harvard Law grad who taught Constitutional Law, and is more qualified than Ronald Reagan was to be a leader of men. He is rational, open-minded, and fair.

Only an idiot lefty could admire lawyers that much…and if he’s so effing qualified, why is this the first job he’s ever had in a leadership role?

He is the President, not a king or potentate. I imagine Ross would look Fearless Leader right in his eyes. Part of the problem with politicians in general and this President in particular, is that few people are willing to treat them like equals. They work for us. Looking someone in the eye when you are voicing your disagreement with them is real world. Perhaps if Obama were surrounded by people with the courage to tell him he has no clothes we would all be better off. Way to go Ross!

But in the context with which the statement was made. You didn’t build the roads that lead up to your deli, you didn’t build the water mains that bring water to your deli, you didn‘t build the ports that handle the overseas goods that you buy and you didn’t build the schools that attempted to educate you and your workers, etc. But of course the Truth here doesn’t fit the agenda.

That same philosophy applies to every citizen. We can’t get to our homes, have cars, food, clothing, etc. without the things you mentioned. The primary difference is that a business owner puts a hell of a lot on the line to open and run that business.

The truth is IT WAS ALL PAID FOR WITH TAXPAYER MONEY.

Apparently the libs want us to be more like China or North Korea… In China the average income is $5,500 per year. Apparently libs want everyone poor and dependent on govt, so they are easier to control.

I will not comply. So while you are starving, or getting jacked by some thug who wants your govt. cheese, I will be enjoying venison roast with fresh tomato salad and green beans.

I will, however, enjoy watching the cities burn. They are mostly filled with lazy, useless libs anyway.

No Jrook, other businesses did. Not the government. The government does not build or make anything. Private contractors do and they do it with tax money taken from the other business owners and private citizens.

Get over it, the government didn’t build anything. This business is right all the government does it put their hand in your pocket to grab as much money as they can.

The roads, schools, seaports, etc. were not built by the governement. They were built by private companies contracted to build them from taxes collected for that purpose. Most state and local municipalities just have maintenance crews (and in some locations even these are contracted out). If you have ever lived on a street that went from gravel to pavement, you would know how much your taxes will increase.

Obama wouldn’t be as much of an anti-capitalist if he had had some experience running his own business . Instead he is ruining our economy thanks to his Marxist indoctrination.
