Editor’s note: Additional quotes from Adam Smith have been added below the video.
Should someone be fired from their job and threatened with violence, torture, even death because they have an opinion different than yours? Of course not. And yet, that is what Adam M. Smith of Arizona says happened to him.
Adam Smith’s life has been turned upside-down in the 36 hours that followed his posting the video of his protest at Chick-fil-A, which involved letting a young, female employee at the drive-thru know what he thinks about the company. (You can watch the video here.)
We had an exclusive conversation with Smith where he shared his side of the story. Here’s a taste of what he said:
- He has lost his job as Chief Financial Officer at Vante. (Smith claims that he was not given a chance to really explain himself before being terminated)
- His family has been threatened with violence and death. (At one point, his email account was getting 3 messages a minute, mostly vulgar and threatening)
- Because his home address was made public, he cannot live in his house. (And Mr. Smith is a married father of four – two of his children are adopted, special needs kids.)
- Smith said that his original intent was to follow guidelines laid out in an online video, which included quoting a scripture.
Before the original Blaze story ran and then again following the news of Adam’s termination, I reached out to him for further comment and clarification. I wanted to see if he wanted to apologize or possibly speak with Rachel, the girl he’s seen berating in the video. There was no comment or reply from Adam until early this morning.
Mr. Smith asked me to watch the video that he claims inspired him to act. It is a YouTube clip from a Christian writer named Jackson Pearce. In the video seen below, Ms. Pearce explains her thoughts on Chick-fil-A and suggests that people go to the restaurant on August 1st and ask for a large water and mention Proverbs 25:21, and if you video your protest, she will post it as a response.
For the record, Proverbs 25:21 says:
If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
Smith’s initial reasoning for his protest at Chick-fil-A springs from his belief that same-sex marriage is a Human Rights issue and that any laws denying it must be changed. And he chose to protest against the restaurant using the method suggested in the above video.
After he returned home from his now-infamous protest, Smith posted the video as a response to the YouTube video on Ms. Pearce’s page. He claimed that this was the first video he ever posted on YouTube. He later walked that statement back saying that he had only posted a few personal family videos, but nothing of a political or protest nature.
Shortly after his video reply hit YouTube, Smith claims that threats started hitting his email inbox. Threats to his family and to himself. So, he removed the video as quickly as he could, but it had already been saved and was in the process of being re-posted by others. One re-poster is tied to the group Stormfront.org. In fact, before he actually spoke with me on the telephone, at 9:34 this morning, Adam sent an email stating:
At this point, this is my comment on the story: read this……..
The link he attached to that email took me to a blog site from someone who identifies themselves as “Florida Squeezed.” The headline of the post read:
Chick-Fil-A Becomes Iconic for Neo-NAZIS & Tea Party
Young-Adult fiction writer’s idea accidentally leads to Arizona Chick-Fil-A protester being cyber-bullied by “White Power” website based in West Palm Beach, Florida
I was a bit confused by this. Was Smith now claiming that he was the victim of cyber-bullies that he claims are Neo-Nazis? No. He wanted me to see how Stormfront.org had re-posted his initial video and also added his contact information. As the video went viral, the threats and emails increased.
“My inbox was getting 2-3 emails per minute,” he explained via phone. He added later: “I’m not even at my house, you don’t know that. I can’t live in my house right now. I’m in an undisclosed location right now.”
I wondered about his terminations. Did both the biotech manufacturing company (Vante) and the college react without giving a “hearing?”
When asked if there is any chance to appeal his abrupt termination from Vante, Smith said he doesn’t not have legal counsel and thus has “no idea.”
So often in cases like this, a lawyer or law firm will step up and offer to assist, so I wondered if anyone had made such a proposal:
“I don’t think anyone can find me right now. I can’t find the emails through my ***** account because… it took me an hour to find your email, and I knew you did it, I knew you sent it, and it took me an hour.”
Smith started reading off some of the offensive emails he was receiving, telling me how people were referring to him and his family:
“I’m a fa**ot, I’m so glad you got fired, it’s so funny, I hope you’re slitting your wrists, your kids have a horrible example of a father, ya know, all kinds of real tolerant stuff…. Ya know, they have free speech so great… they can do whatever they want… they can do it.”
So given all the fallout, I wanted to know if he cared to see Rachel again. “If you encountered her again, what would you say to her?” I asked.
“I will say to her… what I will say to her… and I will figure out what the right words are,” he responded. And then he shed a little more light, saying that he had already gone back to Chick-fil-A the next morning to talk to Rachel.*
She refused to talk to him.
“I wanted to see if she was OK, that’s all,” he explained. “She was actually working there, and her manager went to get her… and she wouldn’t come back.”
Considering the controversy that’s erupted, you can’t really blame her.
By the way, we have repeatedly reached out to his former employer Vante for comment and have not yet received a reply.
Please take our poll on this very hot topic:
*(Author’s note: No matter what you think of Adam Smith’s position on same-sex marriage and his failed protest, I was pleased to see that he had gone back to the Chick-fil-A in an effort to check on Rachel. And I told him so.)

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:32pmLet’s call a spade a spade and stop beating around the bush. He did not get fired for expressing his views. He got fired for being an ******* and being proud of it. If one of my employees did that, I’d have fired them, too. And I don’t give a crap about the cause. I happen to not agree with this one. But, as a pro-life conservative, one of my employees went and harrassed a Planned “Parenthood” worker in the exact_same_manner as Mr. Smith did, I’d be just as upset. We need to act civilly. He did not and he embarrassed the company he works for.
You made your sammich, Mr. Smith. Now EAT IT.

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:56pmThe problem is when people who believe they are furthering justice or some higher purpose use “unloving means” to further that end. The Christian way is “loving ends through loving means.” Mr. Smith did not only not use loving means–he used uncivil and mean-spirited means that visibly upset this wonderfully kind girl.

I also hope Chic-Fil-A rewards this lovely young woman who possesses such obvious good character with whatever honors it bestows on its best employees. This whole story is inspirational…imagine…hundreds of thousands of like-minded people gathering calmly, with malice toward none, simply to affirm their belief in the American Way!
Then to have the company who employed that intolerant bully of a CFO, implement swift justice and affirmation of their position on the subject is almost a miracle. HOPE has been inspired here, people. Put together with faith and love, how can we lose?

Report Post »More over maybe she should point out all the examples of Christian stoning people today.
Christanity is a religion based on Christ(you know that guy that told the mob let he who is without sin throw the first stone thus saving a prostitute, but after which he said go and sin no more to the prostitute) See Christ teachings were of forgive and tolerence(not celebrating and not accepting) as we are all imperfect but they were also about healing and ending the sins as well.
This young lady was quoting what is essentially the qu’ran without mohammed in put.
Ignorance isn’t a sin but in the case of the these people lashing out at good people trying to live moral lives …it aught to be.

Of course that didn’t happen. Haven‘t you heard that Fascist Leftist’s (in this case the LGBT) are now saying that Cathy is paying Ugandan militia to murder gays? Or how about the recent Colorado case where Lesbro’s Aimee Whitchurch & Christel Conklin claimed a hate crime motivated by their sexual preference? Leftist’s are hypocrites. They lie, cheat, and will devour anyone in their way to push their satanic agenda’s.

He got his FREE water with a smile. What is really important and newsworthy is the Chick-fil-A employee who treated Mr. Smith with obvious Christian values,, the same values he was protesting. AND when she treated him with respectful Christian answers, it bothered him because he didn’t get the reaction he wanted, so he hurried home to make a name for himself. The name that would only be gotten from Left wing Liberal Christian haters. Mr. Smith told the Chick-fil-A girl the reason why he was doing this, and he, himself, was a perfect example of what he indicated to her he hated. God uses even Satan to bring about Good.

Posted on August 4, 2012 at 11:29amSo THE BLAZE singles this guy out, and illuminates him as a Target by reporting on his Gay video where he goes in and acts like a Shepard Smith style take it up the ass Queen when he interviews that chick fill a waitress with his little video camera. Then after the Target illumination occurs and the guy gets a full on carpet bombing and is in hiding due to his actions and The Blaze’s reporting, ha haha, then The Blaze goes in and does an after the strike Destruction Evaluation reconoider by interviewing their fleeing Target and his cowering family. It’s hilarious. It’s a hilarious way to get advertising views and click-throughs for their webpage here. Brutal and hilarious at the same time.
The guy obviously deserves everything he gets. Free speech is one thing, but putting up mincing nasty little “Gay Queen attacks restaurant worker girl” videos for the world to see is quite another.
What is really weird, weirder than the guy that put the video up, is the way that The Blaze comes on baiting us into being their private army and going after that guy, (for advertising hits) and then the next day after the battle they called down is over and the guy is beat up, The Blaze is wanting us to think it was all too much and the guy is now a “poor guy” because everybody wants to kick his ass. (Another batch of advertising hits).
I understand the advertising money made by directing The Blaze army to destroy someone, thats logical, but to milk it on the way out???

“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
(New International Version (©1984))
NOT ANY ONE OF YOU ON THIS BOARD NEVER COMMITTED A TRESPASS OR SIN.
If you did, DID YOU ASK FOR FORGIVENESS?
Do you expect God or the person you asked forgiveness, to forgive you?
YES? NO???? and WHY???
I think that most of you who are STILL angry at this guy for what he did ARE IN TERRIBLE ERROR.
If you are still angry over this, THEN YOU ARE STILL IN SIN YOURSELF.
God will never forgive YOU IF YOU DO NOT FORGIVE OTHERS. Remember that.
For every single time YOU DO NOT FORGIVE, you heap coals of fire upon yourself!
Read your Bible people. WE NEED TO FORGIVE THIS POOR SOUL. He was misguided
by Satan, whether he knew it or not. NOW IS THE TIME TO HELP HIM GET HIS LIFE BACK IN THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE – SERVING OTHERS!
Some of you on this board have no business here. You are hateful and full of sin and therefore, DO NOT BELONG. And, if you refuse, THEN GOD HAS A PLAN HIMSELF, FOR YOU. HE WILL REPAY AND WILL NOT BE MOCKED.

Posted on August 4, 2012 at 4:19pmIn response to your post and that of “JOSEPH2”:
The Blaze is a great sit for news and information. However, it’s basic forum mechanics are about 10 years out of date. Faulty interface, inability to track postings, no real IM features at all, wonky posting hierarchies, lack of user customization, etc., etc. There are local pizza shops that run better forums. Glenn is getting ripped off by the people that are in charge of running the forum component of this website. Until these issues are fixed the Blaze cannot ever be considered one of the “must go to” sites.

He verbally attacked someone and voiced his idea that CFA should not be in business because of a belief held by its founders but now he wants to be the victim. I am fine with you regretting your decision, but you don’t feel bad about it, you feel bad about getting fired for it. Chalk it up as a learning experience, dust yourself off, get a new job, and next time try a little tolerence. By the way the proverb he was “going to” quote in is protest vid has nothing to do with CFAs stance, they have no problem serving anyone who will pay fro their product, or handing out free water.

Posted on August 4, 2012 at 10:03pmVante’s actions were perfectly legal. He had a right to say what he wants, however he wants to say it. However, what he and far too many others fail to realize is that with rights come responsibilities. He chose to exercise his right to act like a complete A$$ to someone and then make that action public. He had that right. With that right comes the responsibility to accept the outcomes of those actions. His actions brought negative publicity onto his employers and they responded by firing him. Seeing as he is obviously a flaming liberal, his position at the university is probably well protected. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were offered tenure. If he truly had the courage of his convictions, he’d stop whining about losing his job. Unfortunately, the internet has lead people to believe that they are immune to being held accountable for their actions. He made a six figure mistake. He needs to just shut up before he shoves his foot even further down his throat.

Posted on August 5, 2012 at 7:26pmI’m reminded of how awkward it is to “teach” manners to a rude adult. Unless you’re asked to do it, it’s hard to do it without being rude yourself! Some of you are reviling this man in much the same way he did Rachel, clearly a case of the pot calling the kettle black. (Liberals, no racial prejudice intended.)
This was a “teachable moment” for all of us. The contrast between his and Rachel’s conduct could not be more stark. She was a vision of Christian goodness. He was a vision of bitterness and hatred, just like his rabid liberal associates taught him to be. He went to CFA to cause trouble and never imagined he would be treated with such tolerance, civility and compassion. Now, after meeting Rachel he may start to understand what is so wrong with the Left.
Mr.Smith could be the poster child for Liberal dysfunction, but we must give him credit for his good intentions, i.e. speaking up for people he sees as victims of conservative culture. Underneath all that Liberalism he seems to be a decent soul. We all make mistakes that we regret, and we all need forgiveness. He admitted he was wrong and apologized for his behavior. We don’t have the right to ask for more.
Now it‘s our turn to learn from all this and to emulate Rachel’s example. We should accept his apology, stop berating him, and thank God it wasn’t us that made that awful mistake.

Unforgiveness is like you taking the poison and expecting the other person to die….it affects our hearts. Forgive…but that doesn’t mean we have to forget…we just remove ourselves from the toxin and move on.

You later wrote: “I don‘t want to quibble about the stuff that doesn’t really matter, but none of those Blaze posts were threats. I guess we view that word differently, but I was thinking more along the lines of “I’m GOING to kill you”. (obviously a letter talking about rape is also a threat and that person should be charged, but that was from a Blaze poster…I don’t think)”
To which I responded: “I suppose I can see your point. I guess when someone says “I’m going to beat her up“ and someone else goes ”Yeah, go for it!“ or ”I would do the same!” that’s not a direct threat; it’s just support.”

Violence is the province of the left and all thier buddies, and most always, it is directly attributed to the tea party or some other conservative group. This looks like a put up job of some sort if this man is getting death threats and the like. Do I feel for him? NO. He knew he had a wife and 4 children (and at the time a job). He placed his performance at Chick fil-A ahead of 5 people who depended on his support (and he really was very unkind to a woman who had zero to do with any of this except to work for Chick fil-A). Here is my email
“Mr. Smith:
If you have a problem with a business you do NOT go after and lecture the person working the Drive Thru window .. you man up and contact Management! Very wimpy to berate the girl at the window. ”
He has no problem going after a young woman in PERSON .. but can’t take the truth in an email? WIMP!
I did not call for his firing .. his employer decided that themselves!

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:06pmHis actions at Chick-fil-A are not consistent with the image of himself that he is trying to portray. The Adam Smith on the video is an immature bully, not a man mature enough to make the decision to adopt two special needs children. I hope he doesn’t treat his wife the way he treated that sweet young lady who was not overcome by evil, but who overcame evil with good. She acted more like a Christian and an adult than he did.

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:10pmShe looked terrified. The left, the people who protest, have a record of violence. If I were she, or a friend, I’d be concerned for HER health, not the dirt bag’s who harassed her.
I’m still a little iffy on whether he should have been released from his job. He didn’t seem to represent the company directly, but if he’s a public figure representing a company in a high-visibility position, his actions may reflect negatively on his company and they have a right to pick and choose who they want as the face, and voice, of the company.

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:25pmYes. For all she knew, this man may have intended harm. He certainly seemed irrational and filled with rage. She was literally minding her own business, when this irate man pulls to her window and unleashes a barrage of hate. This may rise to the level of assault, which is a verbal threat where the victim fears physical harm.

Could he be any more stupid. They call us sheep…. I feel bad for his family. I do not agree with putting out his personal phone number and email and harassing his family. We DO NOT have to stoop that far into the gutter with Liberals. There is a moral correction happening and it doesn’t include harassing his innocent family members.
Report Post »Taquoshi
Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:18pmUnfortunately, he showed enormously poor judgement in creating and then posting the video. Had he just pulled the same stunt without video taping it, Rachel would have probably told her co-workers, then shrugged it off and gotten back to work.
However, having said that, I personally have been in positions in the past when people have called for me to be fired for no justifiable reason other than they wanted to flex their power. People think absolutely nothing of demanding that an employee be fired, frequently for situations beyond the employee’s control. But in this case, Mr. Smith moved over the line and harassed the employee. He didn’t have to be there, he went with the express purpose of causing some trouble. Too bad it blew back on him.

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 2:37pmAgree 100%. I disagree 100% with what this man did … but in the same way that I feel Dan Cathay’s speech is his right (and I happen to agree with that), this individual has a right to free speech as well. Doing what he did can and did have consequences, but people making threats and resorting to tactics at or below the level of this man’s tactics is flat out wrong. His employer was probably under great public pressure and did what they had to do and that is between they and their employee. But people should not be physically threatening this man or his family. That is is just flat out low. Say what you will, think what you will, do not threaten unless there is a need (ie: you are in imminent danger and it’s fight or flight) … and even the name-calling totally reduces any validity to your message. Any person can logically paint the actions of this man as horrible, but once someone lumps a stranger in as a “xxxtard” … a “moron” … and so much worse … they have really judged themselves more than the person they’re speaking about.

Posted on August 3, 2012 at 12:08pmNow the left knows how Zimmerman’s parents felt, having their address released to the public. You have the right to say what you want, but you face the consequences. If he had voiced his opinion, and not said he didn’t know how she could live with herself working there, it might be non-abuse. But he’s trying to make that girl feel guilty for working, possibly at the only place she could find to work. Now he’s getting a taste of unemployment.
