‘Exhausted’ Supporters Confront Obama in Town Hall

“We are still the country that billions of people look to and aspire to, and I want everyone to always remember that,” President Obama told a Washington, D.C., town hall audience this morning. The president’s positive words about the current state of America, however, may have fallen on some deaf ears this morning as a number of former Obama supporters questioned the direction in which he’s steered the country since taking office.

During a one-hour televised town hall dubbed “Investing in America” on CNBC, Obama fielded a number of questions from concerned Americans, a few of them seemingly rethinking their 2008 support of his candidacy.

The first question put to the president was from an African-American woman who identified herself as a chief financial officer, a mother, a military veteran and a middle-class American. “I’m exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change that I voted for,” she said. “I’ve been told that I voted for a man who was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class, and I’m waiting, sir, I’m waiting. I still don’t feel it yet. And I thought that — while it wouldn’t be in great measure — I would feel it in some small measure.”

I have two children in private school, and the financial recession has taken an enormous toll on my family. My husband and I joked that we thought we were well beyond the hot dogs and beans era of our lives. And quite frankly, it’s starting to knock on our door and ring through that that might be where we’re headed.  And quite frankly, Mr. President, I need you to answer honestly, is this my new reality?

Another pointed question came from Ted Brassfield, a 30-year-old recent law school graduate, who said while the president inspired him and others his age, his outlook for living the American Dream is looking dismal these days:

“I was really inspired by you and your campaign and the message you brought, and that inspiration is dying away… What I really want to know is: Is the American dream dead for me?”

As Obama leads his party into a midterm election, the president faces overwhelming skepticism and downright opposition from many Americans, some who were among the very constituencies that propelled him into office two years ago. The latest evidence in the president’s eroding support can be seen in recent public opinion dynamics polls. According to a recent poll from The New York Times, a clear majority of Americans have serious doubts the president has a clear plan to aid the country’s struggling economy.

When asked how they felt about President Obama’s job performance, only 26 percent of likely voters give him strong approval, while 45 percent strong disapprove. In addition, the latest poll from Rasmussen Reports finds that 61 percent of likely voters favor the complete repeal of the president’s signature health care overhaul.

From Wall Street — where one hedge fund manager asked Obama why he insisted on “whacking” investors like “a pinata” — to Main Street, the president worked to persuade the audience that the country’s heading in the right direction.

“I know how frustrated people are. I know in some cases how desperate people are,” he said, later adding, “I am confident that if we stay on a course that gets us back to old-fashioned values of hard work and responsibility and looking out for one another, that America will thrive.”

    Listened then went back and listened again. Nice side stepping Mr President. Well at least he has not lost his charisma.

    Lets take Students loans and “give” the power to the student … which means that even more young people can get said loans and be strapped with that monkey on the back (just paid mine off about a year ago at 20% of my Gross income, fun fun) which does not help the nation grow but puts it even more in debt in the Fed.

    Control of the Credit card companies. Er right. So private companies cannot make money off of people and bad investments, nope lets give that control to the Fed as well.

    Most dynamic Private sector. Except where the Obama admin has stepped in and seized control to protect Americans from themselves. Mind you this is the same president that has gone to other countries to apoligize for the US and our arrogance (though he sounded awfully arrogant during his speech). Would have loved to call him on a point though (well at least one) . He mentioned that at the beginning of the term he saw that wages were being frozen or even sliding backwards. Okay, so which is worse? 10% unemployment or frozen wages?

    On the matter of Tech. I would I agree. Tech development does have the potential to help our nation prosper as well as generating jobs but again after seizing control of the auto companies, banks and who knows what else; it is difficult to trust that the Obama admin will keep their greedy controlling fingers out of the pie.

    Never underestimate politicians. I don’t think she was a plant. But, I do believe they knew what they were going to say. They looked at the risks vs the rewards and let them speak, perhaps to show Obama is not out of touch.

      Wilma, I‘m not sure that she was a ’plant’ exactly either, but I‘m rather suspecting that there’s been comments out there about him NOT identifying with real Americans and things like that in the press. A little like the Sunday trip to Church, it’s campaign time and I think they wanted everyone to hear a question along this line. Although, he didn’t seem to really answer the question (imagine that!!) so perhaps not…….otherwise, one would want to believe there would have been a better answer. On the other hand, he couldn’t really answer the question honestly so best to just smile and talk for a bit.

      I second that! We got into this mess by not paying enough attention to our government and what they were doing. The way we are going to get out of this will be to vote them out and vote in people that have character, honesty, values, principles, and small limited government ideals.

      “WE THE PEOPLE” are the three largest words in the Constitution because it’s telling us the most important part of our governing system is to keep the power with the people. The individuals fuel our prosperity, and personal liberty ensures justice and opportunity, not results.

I wrote letters to the editors of three oklahoma papers, but nobody seemed to take obama seriously. I think he was illegally elected. Many poling ordinances were violated. Much money was gathered illegally. Nobody listened. Sometimes i weep for our country and the poor,poor people who are suffering, but, there is no political solution! Pure EVIL walks the planet.       Maxx, I did the same. Warned everyone and asked them to look into him before they voted, but they got caught up in the ‘hopey-changey’ thing…I was called a conspiracy nut because of what I believed was coming…but its here.

      Recently, these same people expressed similar feelings to the lady in the clip; they feel betrayed. My only response was to “be careful what you vote for…you just may get it.”

    What is that black lady exhausted from? She has a government job with big pay and continuous salary increases. She will get good health benefits and a great pension.     Obamas dream is a nightmare for the middle class. There is no question that his elitist ideas will work…for the Elite. The poor will benefit for a time. Take heed all those who voted for redistribution of wealth; once Obama loots the rich who will pay for all your entitlements? Do you really believe that the political elites will pare down their salaries to help out the poor once the middle class and the rich dry up? Fools.       They best get used to getting let down. There is a group of uber-wealthy megalomaniacs who hand picked obama for the post. He will fail as president and succeed as the savior of
      Europe and the Arab block. His approval rating is Europe is somewhere in the 80 th + percentile. He succeeds there because they are already used to living with less….he fails here because we are not. The Europeans want to share our wealth among themselves. They think obama wants them to have it.

      I fail to see how Mr. Obama answered her question? All he gave her was a bunch of excuses, well your kids might be able to get government assistance for college! Wow, how comforting is that!!!! Now she won’t have to worry about eating beans and hotdogs! What a crock answer shame on you Mr, “president” I feel for this lady because we are all wondering if we will have to cut corners to survive in this economy. I applaud this women for calling him out on his failures!

      Is the ceo, mom, middle class lady the problem in America? Are we all the problem? She voted for change and now complains to the President that he’s not doing enough or the right things. The tea party lambastes the president for spending and generally bad policy. The common theme is we are all looking to Government to fix our problems. I mean that very general of course, Government certainly has impact on all things in American life. Many are hooked on Government handouts and complain when they don’t feel the love. Many in the tea party tout small Government and turn around and blame Obama for everything. Ironic that Obama does the same thing with Bush. This is not to say that Obama deserves no criticism, he does just like Bush. With the exception of leadership and appointments, Presidents don’t have that much control over the economy. If congress and the President drastically cut spending and entitlements, we would all feel the effects immediately. It would be ugly. There are days when you could convince me that letting the crash occur would be better. Getting away from keynesian economics and big Government will take some time. Not only is their no political will for this from any party, the juggernaut that is the bureaucracy will not be re-sized easily. It really is far more complicated than a bumper sticker slogan. All this to say, we should all stop blaming Washington then telling them to get out of our lives. We need a long-term plan to reduce Government, maybe 3% a year?

      I am sooooo glad these people said the things they did. Maybe the progressives inside the beltway will get it now. Nah… When your own voters have the audacity to speak against dein feureur, you’re in trouble. You’re in trouble Barry, right here in River City. I guess he’ll blame this on Bush and/or the republicans. I bet Axelrod and Raum baby were spittin’ nails while this was going on. I was just sickened by the way he laughed at the woman when she said she “is tired of defending him and his administration” What a juvenile thing to do and it showed a complete lack of respect for this woman and her family. But then we already knew, he doesn’t respect anyone. It’s all about him.

      what EVERYONE IS MISSING………..the transfer of wealth that these people are talking about is not what Americans think it is. This is not a transference or redistribution of wealth from rich Americans to poor Americans….. dont seem to grasp the true concept. This is a redistribution of wealth FROM America to the rest of the poor……in the REST OF THE WORLD. You have to realize every American is considered rich compared to most median calculations of income to other countries. They have already started the machine by Obama shutting down drilling and giving upwards of 4 billion dollars to Brazil and Mexico to do exactly what Obama has shut down the U.S. from doing. In the same area in order to “save the world and environment.“ This was not done to ”save the environment”, but was done to limit our production and greatly assist in a poorer country to produce a product that we then will be forced to purchase from them. This has allready started with solar panels and light bulbs- (of all things……cheap to us right now, and you say so what, but everything is cheaper to make elswhere….mexico/ china etc. with the de- industrializing of our nation helped along by union reps (not union members mind you ) whose self stated goal is a world union….WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE……WORKING IN COLUSION WITH THIS OBAMA ADMINISTRATION and the FED in their goals to create a world bank and a world government that will strip America of its wealth and spread it around with them in control of everything this IS COMING AND MUCH SOONER THAN YOU THINK UNLESS WE STAND UP AND STOP IT

      I do not believe our government has the countries best interests as a goal. I know these videos are kinda long but if you watch these videos and then look at the goals of the big union bosses words of a world government, the veiwpoints and ideologies of all the people working with this administration who controls the fed bank and glenn becks 9/21 show it will help you all to make a decision on what these peoples goals really are.
