Expert: Google‘s ’Totalitarian’ Methods Should Worry You

Expert: Googles Totalitarian Methods Should Worry You

This interesting article in the Washington Times calls Google out for being ethically challenged. The article is by Scott Cleland who recently wrote the book, Search and Destroy: Why You Can’t Trust Google Inc.

Google Inc.’s “Don’t Be Evil” slogan is seductive but misleading. It is the lowest business ethics standard ever devised, excusing everything Google does short of evil. Google isn’t evil – but neither is it ethical.

While perceptions of the world’s erstwhile No. 1 brand remain exceptionally strong, Google’s ethical blind spots regarding privacy and property rights are beginning to erode the public’s trust and eventually could threaten the company’s market domination. Anyone who follows Google closely knows that the company is a serial scandal machine. One of the world’s most powerful companies, with its vainglorious mission to “organize the world’s information,” has proved itself to be unethical, shockingly political and untrustworthy.

Cleland gives some examples of how Google has violated privacy rights:

Google’s privacy record is shameful. In 2004, Google sparked a privacy outcry by scanning Gmail users’ private emails for advertising keywords. The next year, Google Earth put sites, including the White House’s roof and a Trident submarine base, on public display; a leader of the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade terrorist group said he was thrilled. In 2006, Google refused to comply with a California privacy law. Two years later, Street View exposed people’s homes and license plates to anyone who cared to look; a member of the British Parliament described the service as “invading our privacy on an industrial scale.” In 2009, Google began tracking the books people searched (via Google Books) and visitors to WhiteHouse.gov. Last year, Google Buzz exposed users’ private email lists to the public while Google’s Street View cars were caught eavesdropping on millions of users’ wireless networks. No wonder Privacy International cited Google for its “entrenched hostility to privacy.” But it’s easy to understand why Google has no respect for privacy. Just consider Google Chairman Eric Schmidt’s own words: “If you have something you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it.”

Here is how Google responded (more details in the news clip below, via Fox News):

I greatly limit my use of Google. I also clean Google’s cookies from my browser periodically. I don‘t use Google Chrome and I don’t have an Android smartphone. I don‘t like Google’s limitless thirst for info on what I do and who I am. Its my information and I’ll keep as much of it away from Google as I can.

If you don‘t want people to invade your privacy then maybe you shouldn’t be using the internet. Privacy has gone by the wayside for a long time. It will only get worse until someone gets the idea to keep their information off of the net. Then they will get flagged for something to hide. Can’t win.

I have a small business I use google and facebook and other things. I also got a new smart phone which promptly added all my facebook contacts–many of whom I don’t know–to my phone contact list. Google knows EVERYTHING about me I think, and facebook is apparently married to google.. It bothered me before but it bothers me way more now that I know how cozy they are with the current administration–as is facebook. Its creepy at best and probably much worse than that.

The government is not for the people anymore..it is so corrupt and becoming more openly corrupt. They do not care because what the hell we going to do about it? They are laughing at us, and the media is being paid off for keeping the blinders over our eyes. Some alternative search engines instead of google or bing/yahoo:
    yippy.com
    duckduckgo.com
    ixquick.com

I used to use scroogle.com, but that just searches google, although it claims to be private about it. I decided to just do away with google all together. Each of the above search engines can be customized how you want it and they are private, meaning they do not track you or your search information. I have been using each one of the above for a while now and I am proud to proclaim I am google free.

In place of gmail, an alternative is zoho.com with their free email service. It‘s a web based email service that supports IMAP and POP3 functionality so you can use an email client like Thunderbird or Outlook if you don’t want to use the web to check email.

There are alternatives to google and they work. :p

Don’t have time to read the story, but want to encourage ALL web-surfers, especially those on theblaze.com, to do whatever you can to AVOID GOOGLE products, including their seach engine and browser (there are better alternatives out there; try scroogle.org and opera or k-meleon or Firefox browsers). Mostly, want to encourage people to learn about HOSTS FILE on their computers and learn how to BLOCK interaction with privacy-violators like google & doubleclick ad nauseum.

Glenn Beck recently reported (several times) that google reported that when Bin Laden was killed, millions of KIDS IN THEIR TWENTIES googled “Who is Osama Bin Laden?” Question: HOW DOES GOOGLE KINOW THE *AGE* OF PEOPLE WHO ARE USING THEIR GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE? AND IF THEY KNOW OUR AGE, WHAT ELSE DO THEY KNOW ABOUT EACH INDIVIDUAL USER?

We need to GET RID OF UNWANTED PESTS & SNOOPS ON OUR PRIVATE MACHINES. One way to do so is to block them in your firewall and to set up a HOSTS FILE that blocks googleanalytics.com and their many pseuonyms (including their newest 1e100.net). This may take a little research and brain-straining, but it will be worth it. You’ll not only have more privacy & security on your machine but your surfing speed will greatly increase once you block all the cr*p that’s being put on your system, unbeknownst to you. This is especially true for sites like theblaze.com and breitbart.tv and infowars.com. They’re all LOADED with behind-the-scenes cr*p.

I’ve been concerned about Google for some time. How did they rise so fast? There were other search giants before them, established but then seemingly out of nowhere comes Google, infested with progressive worldview from the start. This was always about controlling the population by a few elites who would control the systems of information.

Stay away from Google, as much as you can, but be aware they are not alone in their desires to control information…. There are many others, just not as big.

Then Google sells that info to insurance companies and they use it to deny coverage.

Well. I suppose anybody with a billion or two lying around could easily compete with a company that can fix the rules of engagement. Like it or not, We are all data to be mined and sold in the grand scheme of things google wise. This is no different than any other salesman that would sell your organs to make a dollar. It’s not like you going to regulate morality or ethics into a large company that uses people and their data to make cash. In the end you can always stop using their browsers and their searches. They made the fastest and best and we all spoiled them. The next person to complain better not be caught googling something. There are plenty of other places to search and a business with no data to cash in on can’t rule the new world order can they? This is simply a story of a lazy apathetic populous that does not really care as long as it is convenient. Want to help? Then go to their competition and use them and never see google again unless it’s their desperate ad campaign to get users to come back.

BREAKING NEWS: Just-released public polls show Republicans are in danger of losing a special election in a deep-red Western New York district.

Speaker Boehner and his backers are scrambling to save the seat — Karl Rove’s swift-boat group just bought a huge slate of attack ads totaling hundreds-of-thousands of dollars. Even Boehner himself made a last minute trip to the district yesterday. They know losing a Republican district like this would be a shocking rebuke to their radical agenda and 2012 hopes.

We can win this race but with Election Day just two weeks from today, we will need $150,000 by Midnight Tonight for urgent rapid response resources.

@ “Bible Quotin‘ Science Fearin’ Conservative American”

You forgot “terrorist hatin” in your moniker. You can replace “Science Fearin” with that. I (we?) do not fear science whatsoever. We do not like false science. Have fun in the curve.

If you look at past monopolies I smell an antitrust suit in the wind, but it won’t happen under this regime.

FTA: Google‘s ’Totalitarian’ Methods Should Worry You

It’s okay, they mirror the government’s totalitarian methods. Sort of interesting, eh?

Free market capitalism means I can stop using their services; I can write articles about how they don’t respect privacy; I can sue them for violating the terms of our agreement, or acting in bad faith (by exposing details), or for damages due to their carelessness.

Vote with your wallets, people. Only, is there anyone else out there that offers an integrated email, IM, blogging, VC solution that also respects privacy?

Google sucks! 100%!!! But, Sickosis, if you think that this ISN‘T capitalism then you don’t know what you’re talking about. That “free” service you receive from Google? Yeah, this is it! I use Ixquick for my search engine, I don‘t save cookies and I don’t share personal information. If you don’t like Google… DON’T USE IT.

If you think the USA has real capitalism, you have never seen, read or understand what a real capitalist society is.

Google, GE, and thousands of other big companies have their hooks in the government ensuring their compititors are put down, that is until they cross someone in the government then they are tossed out for another big company.

What we have in the USA is a very very very bad mixed bag of Crony Capitalism, Socialism, and Dictatorships

Capitalism is all about individual property rights. Google is based on the right of powerful, government backed corporations to just take what they want.

People that don’t understand economic structures typically confuse “anything that is good for corporations” with capitalism. Truth is that for true capitalism to work, there must be a strong sense of individuals rights (especially property rights) and a good deal of competition.

When the government gets involved and works hand in hand with almost monopolistic corporations and banks for their mutual benefit… that is fascism.

@Bible Quotin‘ Science Fearin’ Conservative American
Capitalists don’t spy on you and violate your right to privacy. How many capitalists does Obama invite to the Whitehouse? Communists? Socialists? More the latter and Google is one of them. If you are dumb enough to put your information out there on the internet, then you’ve been had, but Google will go into your emails and scan them for keywords. I quit using Google three or four years ago.

      @BibleFearing-SciencePerverting-Communist-AntiAmerican,
Let me be clear, we ARE capitalists (we, not you) but that doesn’t mean we necessarily want companies to run roughshod over privacy or break the laws of the land. Google is free to make money, but if they do anything unethical don’t whine when we call it out. In fact we conservatives ARE against SOME capitalist enterprises, such as abortion clinics who do their sacred duty to slit babies’ necks and make $$ by stopping little beating hearts. Capitalism is good, but not when it conflicts with morals values and basic conservative principles on which this nation was founded. We will call them like we see them. YES WE CAN!!!
