Experts: Unexplained ‘Missile’ Just a Jet Plane?

The whole country has kept a close eye on some unsettling images out of California Tuesday morning which seemed to show an exhaust tail of some sort of rocket or missile launched about 30 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. More questions arose after military and defense officials were unable to account for the “unexplained” occurrence and questions prompted some missile installations to order a full account of each missile on-hand.

Now, some experts are pointing to the science behind a jet’s contrail — the visible trail of exhaust from a jet engine — and suggesting that the unidentified object may be nothing more than an airplane.

According to ContrailScience.com, the angle of launch, direction flight and curvature of the Earth can distort a jet‘s contrail enough to make it appear like a rocket’s concentrated exhaust.   The site also points to past pictures of confirmed plane contrails which look strikingly similar to the unidentified episode off the coast of Southern California.

Experts: Unexplained Missile Just a Jet Plane?

Image: KCBS

The image on the left shows the mysterious vapor trail captured on camera over the California coast Tuesday morning.  On the right is an image captured in December 2009 which shows what many suspected was a plane’s contrail following take-off, though this has reportedly never been confirmed.

The website also points to other factors that may suggest the unexplained occurrence is nothing more than a simple jet engine.  In reviewing the video, the site notes that there is no bright rocket flare, only a few flashes of sunlight reflection and a sunlit trail.  In addition, the site suggests the contrail was created by a relatively slow-moving plane, compared with a rocket which would move at a much higher speed.

But while scientists review their rocket science, most alarming is how military officials continue to be baffled.  Fox News reports:

Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters the video is so far “unexplained” by anyone in the U.S. Military. The military is examining the video provided by KCBS news and officials say they hope to have answers soon.

The Missile Defense Agency told Fox News it did not launch any test missile last night that could explain the dramatic images. The Navy and the Air Force were also unable to offer an explanation.

“It does not appear that this was a regularly scheduled missile test,” Lapan said. “Before a missile test the military sends notifications to mariners, airmen, and air traffic controllers to stay clear of the area,” and according to Lapan it doesn’t appear those warnings were sent.

“Goooooood morning America….or as they say in Chinese….“zao shang hao Mei Gou” The PLAAN successfully launched a missile off our coast to send a message. Our Pentagon of course is too embarrassed to admit they couldn’t track a ChiCom sub right up to our border, and Obama and the Pentagon are too focused on letting gays have their Folsom Street Party’s on our military bases than being the Military. Obama no doubt is jovial this happened since he can now sack most of the warriors in the Pentagon and replace them with leftist groomed ‘officers’.
Only other theory is a rebellion on one of our subs.

MIKENLEEDS is basically right, it’s nothing. However, it doesn’t even need to be supersonic to leave a contrail like that. In fact, it would look quite different if it was (not to mention it would probably be illegal in that area).

@Southern cross, Jet‘s don’t take off vertically, true, but it turns out that a long time ago some guy figured out that the earth is round. This jet isn’t taking off, it’s coming up over the horizon, and flying straight toward the viewer (more or less) at a normal cruising altitude. This guy: http://blog.bahneman.com/content/it-was-us-airways-flight-808 nailed the flight plan pretty well, actually, and essentially proved the jet theory in the process. Especially since he got a picture of the equivalent flight the very next day from the same angle, and it looks just like the so called missile video. Occam’s razor. The simplest explanation is most likely the correct one. Leave the wild conspiracy theories to the 9-11 truthers.

No, the whole country wasn’t interested in this. For the most part the interest was here or other places looking for signs of a prophesy revealed. Not any different than UFO sightings. It’s exciting for those looking for confirmation of their beliefs. The real news hardly covered and where they did, it was a “human interest” kind of story, not hard news.

I’m sorry, but do planes usually spit fire out of their engines? Because if you look you can see the flame of a rocket engine. Someone fired a rocket/missle, and if our forces don’t know who did it, we have a huge problem.

There is one telling difference between the two contrails. The example one has consistent shading from the sunlight because it is more or less horizontal or at least angeling gently. The mystery object has a dark lower half and a brighter top because it is more or less vertical and the contrail is piercing the level of atmosphere that is in the setting sun and the lower half is in the horizon’s shadow.

If that’s a plane it going straight up at a good throttle.

with airforce1 being mobile, you’d think the priority would be to find out exactly what it was, and where it came from, to ensure there isn’t anymore which could become a threat to airforce1.

Theres no doubt in my mind, it was a chinese missile shot from their new silent running stealth sub’s.. and like I’ve already stated, this is the second warning…the first was when they told you that your aircratf carriers could and would be sunk before you knew where to find the origin of the attack which causes the sinking!

The chinese aren’t happy, and they don’t back down from a fight.

I work in Aviation and if that was in fact a contrail from an aircraft then that aircraft would be in contact with ATC at all times and the FAA would know within a couple of hours of this story whether that was in fact an aircraft. There would be no guessing if that was the case.
The fact that the DOD is saying they know nothing about it tells me they know exactly what it is and don’t want to say anything about it.

My guess is this was some test launch from a Sub or surface ship within the USS Kennedy carrier group and the DOD doesn’t want to talk about it.
I‘ve lived in Florida my entire life and I’ve seen quite a few rocket and shuttle launches and that video looks nothing like a contrail from an aircraft and looks exactly like a contrail from a rocket.

My issue is not that they are testing missles I want them to test them more often, but if this is some unknown by the DOD then that bothers me more if they really don’t know anything about it.

I was a subhunter in the Navy in 1984-88 (Ocean Systems Technician, Analyst). Unless the enemy’s submarines got a lot quieter, we would have know the sub was there. Without going into detail (I’ve been cleared to talk about it, but who knows who is listening?) we would know they were there.

Now, at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist….has anyone heard of the chem-trail theory? I hadn’t researched it in depth yet, but apparently there‘s a theory out there that starting in Bush’s administration jets were spraying something into our atmosphere to halt heat up of our earth. Some say aluminum oxide or some others say chaff (aluminum pieces) to reflect the heat back to outer space. That’s those con-trails that don’t look like con-trails….really wide and stay a couple days.

These missiles/rockets that fire are always seen in this same area as the one in the video. In my opinion, it looks more like the rockets and missiles I have observed than any jets. Land for one, the jets that make those trails take off from LAX, this one originated over the pacific. As for the FAA, they don’t work that way. If it WAS an extraordinary event, they would’ve been able to report it right away. If it was an ordinary event like an airliner, no one would have thought to make a note of it. The fact that they didn’t have an explanation to offer right away lends credence more to the idea that it was an ordinary jet.

It was just after sunset and you could see the vapor trail real clear in the sunlight at that altitude. From Reno,Nv a few hundred miles away. I got some neat pictures. Since it was so visible for such a long ways away, it caused quite a commotion. I called the local news and they said they were swamped with calls. They came out later and just said they launched one. No big deal.

Since this one is said to have been launched 35mi off shore, maybe that makes it harder to explain for some reason.

Who would have thought that a foreign power, as it would surely have to be, could sneak up to our border and launch a missile capable of leveling an entire city without 1. being caught first, 2 getting away after the launch without being caught, and 3- launching a missile here without raising a nationwide alarm?
This was a test to see how America would respond. What do you think, did we pass?

It’s more important to ensure that the naked body. radiation scanners, at the airport, do their thing properly; why waste time worrying about some dumb nuclear warhead, missle, space shuttle, or..or…..somebody’s mistake!

I’ve never seen a plane going straight up out of sight while on fire. So it looks like a missile to me. Probably a single stage missile. Possibly an enemy test. It’s too big for an amateur. Just think if it were an enemy missile headed toward a city armed with a nuke. Who would have stopped it from detonating and maybe killing millions. OR, what if it were a missile armed with a nuke to detonate at say 100 to 150 miles altitude and deliver an electric grid killing EMP pulse that would shut down our modern free society over a vast line of sight area, semi-permanently. I might also add that many of our top military specialists have predicted that we are defensless against a “Scud in the bucket” type enemy attack with a nuke over a city or at high altitude for maximum EMP effect. These same experts have said there would be no way to trace the perps of such an attack. Could these well known military experts be right or does it seem that our pompus arrogant politicians have again overlooked the most likely type of untraceable terrorist attack with our top military leaders following suit.

This should be easy then for the FAA to confirm. A simple list of the flights in the area at the time, aircraft type and location at the time of the plume, would suffice. They have that information, all major jets file a very detailed flight plan with the FAA, additionally all major jets are on some form of tracking radar once they are within range of the coast. So it should be easy to confirm. What‘s the FAA’s word on this?

It’s not a plane as some officials have said, it clearly is a missile and even Russian military experts have said it appears to be a large missile. The real question is whose? is it our missile or Chinese? I hope it is ours otherwise we have another problem.

should be simple to prove. all aircraft are tracked, flight plans controlled and documented. if this is a jet, it should be accounted for by air traffic control to match the time and place.we know the location and the time. what is difficult about this
